Look, let's not beat around the bushes -- Verizon Wireless will one day stock Palm's Pre. It's a rather well documented fact, and at this point the only real question is "when?" Judging by a mysterious Wi-Fi Certificate that just popped up, we're beginning to think that the waiting period is nearly up, and with CES 2010 happening in a week, there's hardly a better time for us to really start believing. If you'll recall, Sprint's Pre snagged a Wi-Fi Certificate number of P100EWW, and just this summer we spotted a few leaked Palm devices within VZW documents with "P101" and "P121" monikers; lo and behold, the certificate for this elusive dual-mode (WiFi and cellular) smartphone boasts a P101EWW label. We aren't trying to read too deeply between the lines or anything, but if this isn't a Pre destined for Big Red, we're eager to know what kind of new mobile Palm has lined up for its presser at CES.

Android and iPhone users show similar usage patterns when it comes to their use of the mobile web and mobile applications, according to eMarketer.
Basing its research on figures from ComScore, it shows that 94% of iPhone users access mobile media, compared to 92% of Android users.
For news and information browsing, both platforms score 80%, while 83% of iPhone owners use apps, compared to 82% of Android users.
By contrast, only 59% of other smartphone owners use apps, although 80% access mobile media and 65% browse for news and information.
Meanwhile, Compete has been tracking usage of apps on both platforms versus the web browser, reporting that 52% of iPhone users spend most of their time using apps - the comparable percentage for Android users is 35%.
"Applications have been vital to the iPhone’s success and Android devices are proving to be no different thus far," says Compete's Elaine Sanfilippo.

Vodafone says it will start selling the iPhone in the UK on 14 January 2010.
It is the latest of the UK's major phone networks to offer the iPhone to customers.
The cheapest tariff available is ÂŁ30 a month for 24 months, plus additional handset charges ranging from ÂŁ59 (iPhone 3G 8GB) to ÂŁ239 (3GS 32GB).
Both business and consumer contracts are subject to a 1GB monthly data limit on mobile internet use. Orange has a "fair use" limit of 750MB per month.
Vodafone and O2 both offer unlimited wifi use. Orange's data limit includes connections to the internet via BT Open-Zone wifi.
Both O2's and Orange's lowest tariffs - ÂŁ34.26 and ÂŁ29.36 respectively - are on a 24-month contract and come with a free iPhone.
Vodafone comes close with a ÂŁ35 a month contract over a two year period, also including a free 3G 8GB handset.
Tesco Mobile tariffs start at ÂŁ20 a month for 12 months - with a ÂŁ222 charge for the same model of handset. However, Tesco says that the shorter contract will enable customers to upgrade more quickly.
Guy Laurence, chief executive of Vodafone UK, said that the company had been preparing its network for over a year to handle the introduction of the iPhone.
There are concerns that mobile networks globally are struggling to cope with demand as more consumers choose internet-enabled smartphones and mobile dongles over fixed broadband deals.
Vodafone has also introduced a charge for customers wishing to use their iPhones as a modem - starting at ÂŁ5 to download 500 MB.

In a note to investors, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster asserted that Apple could sell 1.4 million tablets in 2010... if they priced it at $600 US. The tablet is not even announced yet, let alone its selling price, but Munster has been consistent in calling for a price range of $500 to $700 for the device that AppleInsider calls a "Kindle Killer."
Looking at his sources in the Taiwan supply chain, Munster estimated that Apple could sell 162,000 of the devices each month, pushing out about 2 million every year.

[Dennis] got snowed in after the biggest storm in the history of the state hit. Like any good hacker he didn’t let the time go to waste. He decided to dig out his Neo Freerunner to give it a decent battery and a new OS.
The original battery for the Freerunner has a controller board integrated into the package. [Dennis] pulled out the board and attached it to a portable DVD player battery. After running it through a discharge cycle with another hack of his, the board learned the new battery capacity. The larger battery plus a fast-charger from SparkFun required a larger case. He made it happen by combining a 2.5″ HDD case with the original body courtesy of some JB weld. The final portion of the hack was to load up Android which is as simple as untarring the package onto an SD card.
It’s a bit big, but the battery will last and he’s got an open platform. Nice work!

The iPod touch is Apple's not-so-secret weapon when it comes to the App Store, especially come Christmas. This year was no exception, according to stats released by Flurry.
The company says that over Christmas, downloads from iPod touches 'eclipsed' iPhone downloads by 172% - and that downloads from third-generation iPod touches jumped by 900% on Christmas Day itself, compared to the average of previous Fridays in December.
Meanwhile, Flurry says December was a record-breaking month for the App Store, with downloads increasing by more than 50% compared to November based on average daily download figures.
The company also tracked Android Market over Christmas, revealing that downloads from the Motorola Droid jumped 93% on Christmas Day compared to previous Fridays in December.
However, Droid now accounts for nearly half - 48% - of all downloads from the leading Android handsets - which Flurry says includes Droid, myTouch 3G, G1 and the HTC Hero.
Still, Google has some way to go - Flurry claims download volumes on the App Store are still more than 13 times greater than on Android Market.

The Apple tablet rumors are at a fever pitch, yet again. Depending on what you've read, it's all but confirmed that the company's got a January 26th event scheduled at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) in San Francisco, CA. All this, of course, with nary a word or comment from Cupertino HQ, and without the context that this trend has come and gone ad nauseam, both with the tablet and before with the years of lead-up to the iPhone. Here's the latest bit: MacRumors has dug up information about a Delaware-based company, Slate Computing, LLC, that was founded in November 2006 and owns the trademark "iSlate," the signatory of said trademark being Apple's Senior Trademark Specialist Regina Porter. Given that Apple owns "iSlate" trademark in Europe and that it's allegedly pulled similar stunts with a "fake" company and the iPhone trademark, sure, we could buy into this being just a dummy corporation... but does it really confirm an impending tablet that'll be called the "iSlate?" Not at all. We wouldn't be surprised if Apple has done this for numerous other trademarks, either to give itself more options or to prevent others from trying to manufacture products under those names. (Slate Computing, LLC also happens to own the "Magic Slate" trademark, just so you know.) Also bought up in 2006? The domain iSlate.com, which again according to MacRumors (with help form Mark Gurman of AppleRejectedMe.com) was apparently and briefly shown to be owned by Apple at some point during 2007. Food for thought, but trust us, you don't want to confuse hearsay for concrete fact.
Which brings us to December 24th, where we see a statistically significant uptick in Apple's stock value. Seeing as the fiscals were released back in late October along with the last refresh of hardware (Mac Pro specs notwithstanding), it seems everyone decided to spend their holiday bonuses on some Apple shares. Now, we're not claiming to be professionals here by any stretch of the imagination, but it seems a lot of the activity here can be attributed to the recent flux of rumors. Jason Schwarz of The Street has an interesting take on it, which if you've got 15 minutes to kill should be worth your time to browse through.

We don't know where this is coming from so take it with a grain of salt, but rumor has it from AndroidSPIN that the progenitor Android device, the T-Mobile G1, is destined to officially get an over-the-air update for an Eclair build, Android 2-point-something. It's not specified which version -- whether it's 2.0 or the Nexus One-tastic 2.1 -- will be coming out, but if we had our say, always shoot for the latest and greatest. Hey T-Mo, we know the holidays are pretty much over, but could you validate these whispers for us? Thanks!

The wait has been long, but now there's finally a means by which to connect your dear, yet almost buttonless, iPhone or iPod touch to a Bluetooth keyboard for some more intense finger tapping action. The project that delivered us this teasing video back in February has at long last reached the application stage, where simple commoners like us can use it to synergize our gear -- provided we've had the wherewithal to free it from Cupertino's overbearing clutches first. The BTstack Keyboard app is now available in exchange for $5 at the Cydia store, so if you want to be the first to write a bestseller on his or her iDevice, there's no time like the present.
Update: We've done the inevitable and had a quick play with the app ourselves. Pairing our iPhone and keyboard was a veritable cinch, and we were met by delightfully rapid responsiveness throughout, whether using it in Safari, composing text missives, or jotting those novella notes down. You should note that command, cut, copy, paste, and highlighting functions are not yet active, and then hurry along past the break to see a video demo.

Jeff] and his team completed this iPhone controlled rocket launcher as part of their final project at Georgia Tech. Two servos provide the rotation referenced by an onboard electronic compass, and elevation control for launch. These are interfaced with an eBox 2300 using a few Phidgets boards.
Check out the launch video below. It’s too bad that they went with a commercial solution for servo control rather than building it themselves (especially considering it is an embedded systems class). But it is a nice build none the less. Now they need to add some imaging equipment to the rockets and they’ll be in business.

Information has become available which reveals development is underway for the new iPhone 4, as well as suggestions of features and Apple's plans for the phone. A report on PinchMedia, which made repeated use of the term 'iPhone 4,' was cited on the website MacRumors, though the website admitted that such reports can often be forged. The report also made allusions to a 'Corporate Event' planned for June 28th — July 2nd 2010, which have been taken as referring to the next WWDC."
A related rumor holds that Apple has ordered 40-45 million 5-megapixel cameras, which might hint at new functionality.

December 23rd, 2009, 19:12 Posted By: wraggster
Silicon Alley Insider has it from a "plugged-in source in the mobile industry" that Apple will demo their tablet in January, and have asked selected iPhone devs to prepare high-res apps for the occasion. So, what exactly is the occasion?
The first possibility—and the one that could put a welcome end to the endless fragments of tablet information that we've been parsing for the last few months (**** that, years)—is that this is some kind of public demo. Apple's iPod and iPhone events have been dominated by apps since the App Store opened, sometime to a fault. If Apple's going to announce this thing, they're going to have app support.
The second possibility—the more likely one—is that this will be a closed demo; that it's some kind of private event to give app developers a heads-up before a public announcement, and presumably to comfort them about app interoperability between the iPhone and the new tablet device. According to SIA's source:
[Apple has] told select developers that as long as they build their apps to support full screen resolution — rather than a fixed 320x480 — their apps should run just fine
Essentially, it sounds like they're asking app devs to write quick'n'dirty fixes to remove specific resolution limits from their apps, so that they can run—though not necessarily gracefully—on a larger screen. That's the kind of thing that could put developers' interoperability fears at rest, but not the kind of thing that Apple would want to show the public.
The source claims the device isn't going on sale until later, which fits nicely with the WSJ's claim of a March release date, which falls roughly in sync with announcement-but-no-product Apple events of the past. Also, the source claims that the entire Apple tablet concept is a sick prank by Steve Jobs, and that he literally hasn't stopped laughing for, like, three whole years.

The first mobile phone version of the popular web browser Firefox is "days away" from launch, the head of the project has told the BBC.
The browser, codenamed Fennec, will initially be available for Nokia's N900 phone, followed by other handsets.
It is currently going through final testing and could be released before the end of the year, said Jay Sullivan at Mozilla, the group behind Firefox.
The open-source browser will be able to synchronise with the desktop version.
Apple is very restrictive. It doesn't allow other browsers
Jay Sullivan
Mozilla
Software will mean that any web pages open in a user's desktop browser will automatically open in the mobile version.
"At the end of the working day you can walk away from your computer and keep on going on your phone," Mr Sullivan told the BBC.
"It encrypts all of the information and sends it back through the cloud between your desktop and mobile."
He said that providing there were no "show stoppers", the software could be available to download "within the year".
Desktop success
The browser will be available to download from the Mozilla website and then offered in Nokia's Ovi store, so that N900 owners can download the software.
The organisation is also developing versions for Microsoft's Windows mobile and Google's Android operating system.
Internet explorer is still the world's most used desktop browser
However, he said that it would be some time before iPhone users would be able to use the browser.
"Apple is very restrictive." he said. "As it's a pretty closed platform we don't see that happening soon."
Apple only allows browsers based on its Webkit engine, which is used to power its Safari browser, to be loaded on to the iPhone. Firefox uses alternative technology.
When it launches, Fennec will compete with browsers such as Opera, which is the most popular mobile browser according to analytics firm Stats Counter.
Safari, which comes bundled with the iPhone, is the second most popular, whilst Nokia's own browser is third.
The mobile version of Firefox will hope to follow the success of its desktop browser.
Stats Counter has reported that the latest version of the Firefox browser has overtaken Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) as the World's most popular browser with 21.93% of the market, compared with IE7's share of 21.2%.
However, other firms suggest IE still has the lead on Firefox, whilst most agree that the various versions of Explorer combined still dominate the web browser market.
App craze
Fennec has been in development for the last year and a half.
The new software has many of the features of the desktop version, such as tabbed browsing, and an address bar that doubles as a search box.
Opera is currently the most popular web mobile browser
However, the mobile version will also scale pages to fit the device and will support functions such as tapping the screen to zoom in on a page.
Mr Sullivan said it would also be the first mobile browser to have "add-ons", small pieces of software that add functionality to the browser such as news readers or online games. They can also be used to customise the look and feel of the browser.
"Because it is a browser for a mobile device, the add-ons will be different," said Mr Sullivan. "You'll see ones that use geo-location and exploit how the device is tilted."
The add-ons will add functionality to the phone that is currently offered by mobile apps.
These small specialist pieces of software have become increasingly popular.
For example, Apple now offer more than 100,000 apps in its store ranging from games and social networks to news readers and tools that allow people to use sites such as eBay or Amazon on the go.
Blackberry, Google, Nokia, Symbian and Microsoft all offer their own app stores.
However, he said that he did not think that the browser would completely replace these apps.
"They will co-exist," he said.

Once again we are seeing Apple approve Apps that we would have never thought possible. Either they are really listening to the developers to cut some slack, or they are all drunk out of their minds, drinking Egg Nog and sipping Cocoa, with the AppStore on autopilot. Either way, I won't complain, although
Nescaline was unleashed upon the App Store today by Jonathan Zdziarski. Nescaline comes with some free games, however as usual, you'll have to add your own roms. However, this is not as easy as just SSH'ing them in. Obviously those that don't have Jailbroken phones can't do so. But the App does have the ability to point to a URL containing a ROM and download it to your device to play as you please.
I could go on to explain the controls, layout and gameplay, but nothing is really different than the version we have available to us in Cydia. So here are some details and some screenies
Note: I only found this in the US Store
UPDATE: It appears that this app has been pulled from the AppStore.
Only a few moments after I posted this, the app is now gone from existence. It's pretty obvious as to why this probably happened, but nonetheless, thats the way it goes. It just makes one wonder what is really going on for the approval process...
