The number of gamers who enjoy mobile video games on their iOS device is skyrocketing, according to the findings of a new report. The International Gamers Survey from NewZoo indicates that better than half of the nearly 80 million Americans who play mobile games in the U.S. are now engaging in those mobile gaming activities on an iOS device.
In other words, there may be approximately 40 million iDevice mobile gamers lurking among us today. The data, which was collected from roughly 10,000 respondents in June, is probably now on the light side. Given that the iPhone 4 was just released this summer and has since sold like gangbusters around the world, the number of mobile iOS gamers is likely far higher than this survey suggests. Still, according to the findings presented, Nintendo DS and DSi gamers only total 41 million.

Over the weekend, my colleague and fellow MMi staff writer Wiley John Wright covered the forthcoming conclusion of Apple's free iPhone 4 case program. As we've known for some time, the program in question will draw to a close in two weeks on September 30th. Understandably, however, all are not pleased with the decision by Apple to halt the case program.
In particular, the folks at Consumer Reports (who first ripped Apple to shreds in the wake of "Antennagate") are taking yet another strong stand against Apple and reiterating the publication's refusal to recommend the iPhone 4. Yesterday on its official blog, Consumer Reports once again condemned Apple's "less consumer-friendly" actions. That is, "Putting the onus on any owners of a product to obtain a remedy to a design flaw is not acceptable to us,

Epic Games is now set to add iOS support for its highly acclaimed Unreal Development Kit. Epic Citadel, a tech demo, has now been downloaded over a million times and demonstrates just what this development kit is capable of. Epic Games announced at the Korean Games Conference that independent iPhone developers will now be able to generate iOS applications using the Unreal Development Kit.
Apple recently announced that it would “relax” some of the restrictions that have made developing advanced games like Unreal overly difficult for some app developers. Proprietary API’s, like the one Epic Games has just announced, would have been automatically rejected by Apple’s App Store before now. Now that these restrictions have been lifted, developers will be able to more easily create advanced and visually-engrossing experiences for iOS devices.

Palm first started telling us webOS 1.4.5 was coming "soon" back in May, but after an interminable wait it looks like Pre Pluses on Verizon and AT&T are starting to get an OTA update. The release notes page on Palm's site is currently down, but we're looking for better PDK support, some GPS fixes, and improved gaming action. We'll let you know as soon as we find out anything definite -- but for now, let us know how it's going on comments.

Microsoft has already gone on record saying that Windows Phone 7 will be initially launching in just five languages, all with essentially the same easy character set -- English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish -- but they're undoubtedly champing at the bit to ramp that list up to a few more. In fact, the latest word on the street is that they're going to be cutting a bunch of corners on those additional tongues, presumably in an effort to get them on shelves sooner rather than later. Not a bad strategy, perhaps, but the rumored list of features on the chopping block is an ugly one: Xbox Live support, Zune functionality, and "limited" Windows Phone Marketplace capability, just to name a few, and only the browser and email views will actually support the native character sets; phone menus and keyboards will initially be in one of the "big five." As much as we'd like to see WP7 in as many places as possible right away, we'd have to say this is too great a sacrifice if true -- all the best stuff would be gone. Keep chugging, guys.

Time to get down and boogie if you think the Android fragmentation issue is overblown. Google has dropped its latest platform version stats and Android 2.2, aka Froyo, has managed to corner a healthy 28.7 percent of all active Googlephones (those that accessed the Market within the two weeks leading up to September 1), rapidly closing the gap on version 2.1 and nearly matching in number the handsets still stuck on the Cupcake or Donut diet. When you consider that back in May those pesky 1.5 and 1.6 versions were on a whopping 62 percent of Android mobiles, you'll probably agree that phone makers seem to be getting their act together in terms of delivering Google's latest wares in a timely fashion. Who'd have thought it, the more practice they have, the better they're getting at their jobs!

"The Mercury News reports that former hacker Jonathan Zdziarski has been tapped by law-enforcement agencies nationwide to teach them just how much information is stored in iPhones - and how to get it. 'These devices are people's companions today,' says Zdziarski. 'They're not mobile phones anymore. They organize people's lives. And if you're doing something criminal, something about it is probably going to go through that phone.' For example, every time an iPhone user closes out of the built-in mapping application, the phone snaps a screenshot and stores it. Savvy law-enforcement agents armed with search warrants can use those snapshots to see if a suspect is lying about whereabouts during a crime.

Dev tool makers are celebrating Apple's apparent about-face on the use of third party software for the creation of iPhone games.
Apple announced the relaxation of its much-criticised restrictions on middleware last night, together with new guidelines for developers seeking App Store approval.
the change means games made with the Unity engine or created in Adobe's Flash can be allowed on the mobile store, as long as they have been exported fully to iOS and do not require the downloading of any further code.
"At Unity we applaud this move by Apple," said Unity CEO David Helgason. "We are all about enabling people with the best tools imaginable so they can make awesome products.
"Apple has always been primarily focused on providing superior products to end users, and Unity games have indeed been continuously approved throughout the last months. However, we are very happy for all those devs who can now join the party."
Helgasson will go into more detail on the implications of Apple's about-face on the Unity blog later today.
Meanwhile, Adobe published a statement in response to what appears to be a ceasefire in Apple's cold war with the Flash format.
"Apple's announcement today that it has lifted restrictions on its third-party developer guidelines has direct implications for Adobe's Packager for iPhone, a feature in the Flash Professional CS5 authoring tool.
"This feature was created to enable Flash developers to quickly and easily deliver applications for iOS devices. The feature is available for developers to use today in Flash Professional CS5, and we will now resume development work on this feature for future releases."
The legitimisation of Packager and similar conversion tools is expected to result in a new flood of submissions to the App Store -although the tightened approval rules will likely make limit the number that make it through.
"This is great news for developers and we're hearing from our developer community that Packager apps are already being approved for the App Store," added Adobe - highlighted that Apple devices would still refuse to run any Flash content that hadn't been exported to iOS format.

Back when Apple initially said it'd offer free iPhone 4 cases to assuage reception concerns, there was a September 30th deadline given for the program. After which, according to Steve and company during the post-press conference Q&A, Apple would "evaluate" the prolonged need for such an offer. Well, looks like the decision has been made. In a statement on its website, Apple has confirmed the free case program will be discontinued for all iPhone 4s sold after September 30th, and the return policy for the smartphone will return to normal, pre-antennagate rules. Evidently, said the statement, "we now know the iPhone 4 antenna attenuation issue is even smaller than we originally thought." It had to end sometime, folks.

Brad Linder of Liliputing posted an interesting analysis today about Google's reluctance to endorse Android for tablets. Linder argues that while there may be legitimate concern that Android just isn't polished enough for devices without phone access (because some apps need it), it would be smart for Google to segregate the apps themselves, so users can simply know which apps will work on Wi-Fi-only tablets. But from Google's perspective, he observes, "pushing a version of Android that isn't exclusively for phones could be all it takes for Chrome OS to be dead on arrival."

Android will be rivalling Symbian for smartphone market share by 2014, according to Gartner's latest predictions.
The analyst firm forecasts that in 2014, Symbian will have a 30.2% share of smartphone sales - 264.4 million units - ahead of Android's 29.6% (259.3m).
Gartner sees Apple's iOS in third place with a 14.9% market share (130.4m), followed by BlackBerry (11.7% - 102.6m) and Windows Phone (3.9% - 34.5m).
In 2014, Gartner predicts 875.6 million smartphone sales, up from 172.4 million in 2010.
This year, the company expects Symbian to take a 40.1% market share, followed by Android (17.7%), BlackBerry (17.5%), iOS (15.4%) and Windows Phone (4.7%).

September 11th, 2010, 16:34 Posted By: wraggster
Apple has released its hitherto mysterious App Store approval guidelines to developers, as well relaxing its attitude to third party formats.
Despite fears that a cull might be looming, Apple will now allow games and applications created and exported with tools such as Unity and Adobe AIR. As long as the resultant Apps do not download any further code, they should in theory make it past the approval process.
While this means that developers may now use Adobe applications to export to iPhone from Flash, direct use of Flash itself on iPhone remains disallowed. It is nonetheless a significant step forward from Apple's previous, and very public, antipathy towards the format.
In similarly unexpected move from the iPhone creator, Apple has attempted to clearly spell out its thinking on the App Store approval process as a list of updated and tightened developer guidelines (available in full as a PDF here).
"Excessively objectionable or crude content" is out, as is any attempt to harvest information about users from their new Game Center IDs.
Apps must also be politically sensitive. "Enemies within the context of a game cannot solely target a specific race, culture, a real government or corporation, or any other real entity," reads the document.
Despite yesterday's release of GTA: China Town Wars HD, the depiction of realistic weapons in a context that encourages crime will also cause scowls amongst Apple's approval staff.
Perhaps most interestingly, the document suggests a clampdown on throwaway and duplicate titles. "We have over 250,000 apps in the App Store. We don't need any more Fart apps. If your app doesn't do something useful or provide some form of lasting entertainment, it may not be accepted."
The guide also discourages the use of the App Store as a training ground for new developers, which may limit the potential for breakout and viral hits.
"If your App looks like it was cobbled together in a few days, or you're trying to get your first practice App into the store to impress your friends, please brace yourself for rejection. We have lots of serious developers who don't want their quality Apps to be surrounded by amateur hour."
Apps labelled beta, demo and trial will be rejected, as will those with evident crash bugs or that do not offer the functionality suggested by the title.
Apple does offer a right of appeal for Apps that are deemed to contravene these tightened rules.

So let's see, how long has iOS 4.1 been out in the open for public consumption? We make it less than 24 hours, yet already some earnest jail busters have managed to liberate it from Apple's control freak clutches. It's still a fair distance away from an easily executable jailbreak, but it's looking like it'll work on iPhone 4, the latest-gen iPod touch, and the iPad, covering all the freshest bases of Apple hardware. Now it's just a matter of waiting it out.

With a gold master OS, plenty of devices raring to show themselves, and a more or less obvious October launch window, it's clear that Windows Phone 7 is right around the corner. Pocket-lint is reporting today that its sources, "senior figures within the industry," are pegging October 11 as the special day, with a New York launch event to make it all official. The handsets will then be available later that month, according to one of those sources. It sounds like everybody is ready for Microsoft to start fighting back in the world of phones, the question is: are you?

Okay, so we've given you about a day to download, install, and tear iOS 4.1 into microscopic shreds. What's the end result? We've been tipped on a handful of troublesome nuances in the update, ranging from unsolved proximity sensor woes to a sudden onslaught of voicemails -- and we're trying to get a feel for how widespread they all are. Apple has released the 4.1 software update for its iPhone and iPod Touch range, bringing with it the long-awaited Game Center software.
Roughly analogous to Xbox Live, Game Center offers standardised multiplayer, matchmaking, achievements and friends lists to owners of Apple mobile hardware.
However, it is not available on iPhone 2G or 3G, or to the first generation iPod touch. Additionally, a promised iPad version is not due until an unspecified date in November.
Due to App Store approval times, few games supported Game Center at last night's launch, but there has been a slow trickle of updates – including Flight Control.
Titles planned to sport Game Center integration in the near future include perennial App Store top ten lurkers Angry Birds, Field Runners and Pac-Man.
The Game Center update prompted a rush to grab usernames, with each gamer registering and using a unique handle.

Google's mobile advertising boss says Apple's latest Developer Program Licence Agreement gives Google and AdMob the green light to continue serving ads into iOS apps.
A change to the terms earlier this year had seemed to lock AdMob out, due to being owned by a rival smartphone platform owner - Google.
Now everything's tickety-boo, according to Google's VP of product management Omar Hamoui.
"Unlike the previous version, these new terms ensure that Apple’s developers have the choice of a variety of advertising solutions (including Google’s and AdMob’s) to earn money and fund their apps," he blogs.
"This is great news for everyone in the mobile community, as we believe that a competitive environment is the best way to drive innovation and growth in mobile advertising."
