By now you may have seen some photos of an alleged iPad casing doing the rounds that is purported to be the next generation of Apple's tablet. In the pics, you can clearly see that there are two distinct slots for the company's 30 pin dock connector, which would allow you to plant the iPad in either landscape or portrait mode. Unfortunately, this isn't a sign of things to come -- it's a future that never was. According to a trusted Engadget source, what the image actually shows is a rejected concept from the current generation iPad. The story goes that originally there had been plans to feature two dock connections, but close to the last minute a design decision was made to kill the landscape port.
It's still possible that Apple has decided to go back to the two-port design, but in all likelihood this is a piece of a prototype which has found its way into the world. If the story we've been told is correct, then there would likely be dozens if not hundreds of these back pieces floating around China. From what we can suss out, this is not the direction Apple is going in for the next version, but hey, if come January we see a new iPad with two dock connectors -- drinks are on us.

In case you've got some fundamental issue with Apple's upcoming AirPlay, or just a fifth-gen iPod nano you're unwilling to part with, here's a handy little adapter for you. Produced by Cywee and likely to be sold for around $99 by PCD in the US, this RF streamer plugs straight into your iDevice's dock connector and then beams video, pictures, games and the like over to its nearby base station, which in turn hooks up to your television by a set of RGB cables. Any app that utilizes Apple's video output API is a candidate for having its visuals sent over, though resolution is unfortunately capped at 480p and you'll need line of sight at a distance of no more than 15 feet for everything to work correctly. Just to make sure we're all appropriately underwhelmed by its current product, Cywee promises an 802.11n WiFi variant that'll handle 1080p and output via HDMI for next year. Great, we'll just wait for that one, why don't we?

You'll be seeing a lot more of the good ol' Yahoo smiley on front-facing cameraphones soon -- the web portal's VP of Mobile David Katz says that a new Yahoo! Messenger with cross-platform video chat is headed to Android and iPhone. Originally confirmed for the new T-Mobile myTouch, it's presently been submitted to the iTunes App Store for review. It'll reportedly work over both 3G and WiFi connections and freely conduct video calls with any other device running Yahoo! Messenger, including webcam-equipped PCs. Look out Qik, Fring and Tango -- there's a new sheriff in town.

Rumors of an iTunes subscription service are nothing new, but it's not every day they pop up in Reuters and the New York Post and CNET all at once, so here we go again. The Reuters and NYP reports claim Apple's Eddy Cue has been meeting with record execs to pitch a new $10-$15 monthly service that would offer unlimited access to music -- the pricing would be tiered depending on the amount of music consumed and how long you'd get access to it. That goes hand in hand with the CNET piece, which says Apple's trying to keep Spotify from getting US deals in place by telling the labels they'll never make any money from the service -- not the most chivalrous of moves, but no one ever said the music business was a friendly place. Of course, we've been hearing versions of these rumors for ages now and we're sure there are always talks ongoing, so this could all be nothing, but we'd bet Apple's trying to work something out ahead of Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 launch and renewed Zune marketing push. We'll see, we'll see.

We've been looking forward to this for a while, and now it's here: Adobe AIR runtime for Android. That means developers using Flash Builder or Flash Professional CS5 can publish AIR apps directly to the Android Market, and all users will need is this little runtime from the Market and they're set. AIR's desktop-oriented .air packages aren't compatible, so you can't just go and grab anything, but there are AIR apps already starting to pop up -- AppBrain has a whole list of them in one of the source links below -- since Adobe has been trialling this with developers for a little while now.

Shootin' straight, are we Andy? For those unaware, Andy Rubin is the vice president of engineering at Google, and he's had his fingers in Android before the mobile OS was taken mainstream by El Goog. He recently sat down to talk mobile with PCMag, and he left the world with a wealth of quotes to ponder. For starters, he practically calls out OEMs who aren't keeping up with Android's releases, noting that "there's no advantage to the OEM of using an older version, and I'd say there's a consumer disadvantage." Clearly, he's not a fan of all of this fragmentation, either. Moving onto Windows Phone 7, he really came out swinging. When asked what he thought about WP7 as a competitor, here's what came flowing out:
"I think the screen shots I've seen are interesting, but look, the world doesn't need another platform. Android is free and open; I think the only reason you create another platform is for political reasons."
We'll obviously need to wait for Windows Phone 7 to launch (and see a few quarters of sales numbers) to see if he's just blowing hot air, but it's interesting fodder at least. Hit the source link for much, much more where this came from -- and keep it sensible in comments, okay? It's just code, after all.

Mozilla has released the first beta of its Firefox 4 for Android and Maemo. The browser is based on the Firefox 4 core and should be released in the same time frame as the big brother. The mobile browser includes Firefox Sync, a cloud feature that enables users to sync browsing history, passwords, form-fill data and bookmarks, as well as open tabs."
Android news site Androinica also mentions the release, and provides a small tutorial on installing beta apps for Android.

Apple is reportedly working behind the scenes to address scratching and cracking of the iPhone's glass back panel by certain third-party cases. This 'Glassgate' story got rolling with a report in the gdgt newsletter by Ryan Block, who says he spoke with sources inside and outside of Apple about this issue, but was unable to get an official Apple comment. Block writes: 'Apple has apparently found that non-bumper style cases — specifically those that slide onto the iPhone 4, which are occasionally prone to particulate matter getting caught between the rear of the phone and the case — can cause unexpected scratching that could quickly develop into full-on cracking or even much larger fracturing of the entire rear pane of glass. To put it another way: Apple is afraid you might buy a standard slide-on iPhone case, put it on your phone, and then discover the next time you take it off that the entire back of your device has been shattered by no fault of your own.' Apple is said to be taking it seriously, looking to avoid the sort of backlash it got when reports surfaced over the summer that the iPhone 4's antennas didn't work correctly when users gripped the phones in a certain (and quite natural) way.

Consumer electronics trailblazer Apple is set to become an even more powerful player in the technology industry, according to PCR's survey of key retailers across the UK.
When asked if Apple will become a much more dominant force, 68 per cent of respondents said yes, while 22 per cent said no, and 10 per cent were not sure.
Having grown to almost monopolise the MP3 player market, successfully opening up the tablet sector to the mass consumer market, and currently driving widespread HTML5 adoption, Apple certainly has a track record in market dominance in certain sectors.
However while recent products such as the iPad have clearly been a success, there is discord as to whether it, and the tablet market it is paving the way for, will in some way cannibalise the PC market.

Okay, we know what you're saying: why would a Europe-bound device be getting FCC certification? Well, really, it's a simple matter of making sure that devices capable of roaming stateside are compliant with all the necessary rules and regulations... and it's on that note that we direct your attention to this P102UEU model that's just been approved. In Palm parlance, "P102" refers to the model -- most likely the rumored Pre 2 in this case -- and "UEU" means that it's a UMTS 3G device destined for the EU. As you might recall, the similarly-styled P102UNA and P102EWW (North American UMTS and CDMA, respectively) were just spotted in TÃœV Rheinland's database not long ago, so yeah, all signs are pointing to an announce pretty shortly.
Update: PreCentral's forum members have swarmed upon the filing and rooted out some juicy details -- it's almost certainly a slider since the unit was tested in both open and closed positions, it's got an 1150mAh battery (the same capacity as the current Pre / Pre Plus), and thanks to some part number matching, it seems it has exactly the same rear cover (Touchstone-compatible, naturally) as the current models, so odds are good we're not going to see much form factor innovation here. Most notably, though, the processor is listed at 1GHz, though it's not clear which specific core is in use; TI's OMAP3600 series (the same that's found in the Droid 2 and Droid X) seems probable, though.

Well, that didn't take long. Just days after the official Skype application finally landed in the Android Market, along comes an .apk that's far more salacious for Americans. Thanks to xeudoxus over at Droid Forums, a tweaked version of the app is now available to download and sideload (sorry, stock Aria owners), promising the same functionality but without that nasty 3G block. It's really as simple as that -- hit those source links to get the unquestionably superior version, and feel free to let us know how your carrier's network holds up in a test call.

Apple weathered that Antennagate storm surprisingly well, but now there's another potential cloudburst on the horizon, and it's been pre-named for your convenience: "Glassgate." Or maybe "GlassThatShattersIfScratchedByACasegate." Ryan Block has just posted a story on gdgt citing sources "inside and outside Apple" claiming that Apple has discovered a different flaw -- or weakness, shall we say -- in its iPhone 4 design. The basic problem seems to be with non-bumper cases, specifically ones that slide on to the phone, and the danger of trapped particles scratching the back of the phone while taking the case on and off. Case-caused scratches are nothing new (though still annoying), but the big problem seems to be that these scratches can lead to cracking and even full-on shattering of the back panel. Apparently this lead to Apple severely limiting its reselling efforts of third party cases for a time (which you might have noticed), and while Apple currently has some third party cases online and in its stores, none of the hard cases are of the slide-on variety. Apple also purportedly has a new test program set up to understand this specific issue.
Of course, plenty of questions are raised by all this: is this a widespread problem with folks that have managed to acquire a slide-on case? We haven't really heard of such a correlation so far. Do the snap-on folks, many of whom received their cases free of charge from Apple, have anything to worry about? And does Apple have any intention of warning its consumers about this potential danger? Apple didn't respond to Ryan's request for comment, and we doubt they'll respond to our own until they're good and ready to talk -- let's just hope there's not another faux hat-in-hand press conference in our future!

Note the plural use of "phone" in that headline quote. It comes from HP's Senior VP Eric Cador who said, "you will see us coming early next year with new phones," when speaking at an industry conference today in Barcelona. Of course, he's referring to smartphones running webOS and not some WinMo followup to the iPAQ Glisten for crissake. Sure, it's not much, but when you're as desperate as we are for the next Palm device then every scrap of information counts.

Eschewing the femtocells that most of its competitors have embraced, T-Mobile USA has long touted WiFi calling as the answer for augmenting its cellular network -- problem is, they've generally done a poor job of rolling it out to a wide variety of handsets. Notably absent from the compatibility list so far, Android is finally being welcomed to the club today -- as rumored -- with the recently-announced myTouch and Motorola Defy among the first models to nab the feature. Though availability on currently-sold phones hasn't been announced, T-Mobile does say that WiFi calling is "anticipated to be available on a growing selection of T-Mobile's Android-powered smartphones in the coming months," so we'll go on record hoping we see a few upgrades in the works (G2, we're looking straight at you).

Say it with us now: "Here we go again." Just months after a particular eFuse predicament left legions of Droid X owners fuming, it seems that an all-too-familiar scenario is presenting itself to the earliest of T-Mobile G2 buyers. As the story goes, there's a problematic microchip embedded into the handset which "prevents device owners from making permanent changes that allow custom modifications to the the Android operating system." That's according to a lengthy New America report on the issue, which outright proclaims that a hardware rootkit "restricts modifications to a device owned by the user." In other words, if you install some fishy (or not fishy, for that matter) third party ROM, the phone is capable of overriding your software changes and reinstalling the original firmware -- makes perfect sense considering how earlier roots were "vanishing" post-reboot. Needless to say, this isn't exactly going over well with the tinkering community, and a 40+ page thread has already exploded over at xda developers. The silver lining isn't tough to spot, though -- chances are someone with ample time and sufficient coding skills will be able to circumvent this nonsense by the time the G2 actually finds its way back into stock.

A user named Hexxeh has posted a video online of the iPad running Google's upcoming Chrome OS. Hexxeh was able to put Chrome OS on an iPad because the open source code for the operating system is available in its Chromium state, but it's not necessarily true that Apple will allow iPads to run other operating systems going forward. That's typically not a level of openness found in the Apple playbook. Nevertheless, it's worth considering what it might mean to have a robust OS like Apple's on the same tablet as one that runs a cutting-edge operating system like Chrome OS. Why wouldn't users love that?"

Apple recently approved an iPhone app called IS Drive, which lets users check and manage downloads from ImageShack.us, while also offering users the option to use the company's BitTorrent service to download files to their ImageShack account. Once Apple got wind of what the app was capable of, however, it was promptly removed from iTunes."

When the iPad finally dropped in April it was greeted with the expected fanfare, but opinions were rather divided about whether the thing would be a long-term success -- even amongst we humble writers. Six months on there can be no doubt, with the tablet selling 4.5 million units in its first quarter of availability according to CNBC. The truly magical iPhone? That managed a (relatively) paltry one million units in the same timeframe after launch, while the now ubiquitous DVD player pushed just 350,000 in its three four months of availability. You know what that means: it's time for analysts to start breaking out the hyperboles -- again. Colin McGranahan from Bernstein Research says "the iPad is a runaway success of unprecedented proportion," meanwhile Pete Najarian from TradeMonster.com calls it a "total media device" and concludes "there's not much a PC can do that you can't do on an iPad." That last bit is certainly debatable, and you know exactly where you can debate it. Just keep it respectful, yeah?

BlackBerry OS? Dead! iOS? Dead! Symbian? Never stood a chance. Android's exponential growth has today been illustrated by Nielsen's statisticians who present us with the above chart of recent US smartphone purchases. It shows that over the six months leading up to August 2010, 32 percent of American new phone buyers had grabbed themselves a device with Google's OS on board, which is comfortably ahead of RIM at 26 percent and Apple at 25 percent. These results corroborate NPD's figures on the matter -- which peg Android at 33 percent of new US purchases -- and reiterate the idea that Android is headed to a place whose name starts with D and ends with omination. One more chart showing total market share can be found after the break (hint: BlackBerry still reigns supreme overall).
