The iOS dev community already shattered the new Apple TV, but now it's been poisoned, too. What does this mean for you? It means that there's still a chance your $99 set top box might be jailbroken to run apps, even though Shatter is gone. Now we'll just have to wait and see if someone figures the hard part out, and gets some apps installed. Those Angry Birds don't fling themselves, you know.

If you happen to be enthusiastic about Lenovo, tablets, and your American residency, look away now. Lenovo still plans to ship the Android-based LePad in China some time soonish, but its US roadmap can pretty much be summed up as "wait and see." The company's COO Rory Read has been cited as saying there are no plans to release a slate for the US market until at least Android's Honeycomb version comes out, agreeing with Google on the point that Froyo is not "the right base to have a fully functioning pad." Lest you think Windows 7 will fill the void until whenever in 2011 that Android tablet does arrive, Lenovo's director of new technology, Howard Locker, sets you straight: "Windows 7 is based on the same paradigm as 1985 -- it's really an interface that's optimized for a mouse and keyboard," and the Thinking machine team doesn't intend to build a slate around it. And if you were thinking of maybe picking up a LePhone as a consolation prize, tough luck, that won't be arriving in the US for at least another two years (which in smartphone terms is basically "never"), although it's good to know that it's now got 13 percent of the smartphone market in China. You know, in case you own stock in LeCompany.

HP has released details of the firm's anticipated relaunch of the Palm brand with the new Palm Pre 2 smartphone powered by a revamped webOS 2.0.
The firm called the webOS 2.0 smartphone operating system the most "significant update to webOS ever", saying that the new version "ratchets up a few notches" the set of features from previous versions. One of the major new features is a multitasking interface called Stacks which, the company said, automatically groups related 'cards' together in stacks in order to make it easier to switch between many applications.
"With webOS 2.0, we're advancing the innovations we introduced 16 months ago, expanding the features that make webOS great for consumers, enterprises and developers," said HP's Palm business unit boss Jon Rubinstein. "We've made tremendous strides since the platform launched, and now we're taking our biggest leap forward with powerful new features that make it easier to get more things done with your webOS device."
Also coming in webOS 2.0 is a feature called Just Type which launches appropriate applications such as composing an email, writing a message or searching the web without needing to move to an appropriate application first. The system will be made available for developers to hook into in order to enhance the Just Typle functionality.
HP Synergy is the name given to a new software aggregation hub in webOS 2.0 which aims to combine a range of accounts such as Microsoft Exchange, Facebook and Google, presenting them through a common front end interface.
The Palm Pre 2 phone now includes a processor clocked at one gigahertz, similar to the current grop of high-end smartphones and rather more than the previous Pre offering. The new Pre 2 will also have a slide-out keyboard, 3.1-inch "vivid touchscreen" and 16GB of onboard memory.
The Palm Pre 2 will appear first on the French network SFR, as early as this Friday, while listed as the "coming months" for the US. The company will also be making available an unlocked version to run on any network although the carrier of choice for subsidized contracts in the US and Canada is Verizon.

And just like that, the rumor mill smirks. HP has just come clean with a device that we've been hearing more and more about over the past few weeks, and with it will come the next generation of webOS that we've been hearing about for even longer. The Palm Pre 2 will be the first device to ship with HP webOS 2.0, with the revamped and renamed (presumably to use on more than just Palm smartphones) mobile OS promising "true multitasking," Stacks (for organizing apps) Just Type, HP Synergy (links your email and social networking accounts), Exhibition (enabling users to run apps designed specifically for the Palm Touchstone Charging Dock) and support for Adobe's Flash Player 10.1 Beta. It's also bringing along a new Favorites tagging option, Skype Mobile (on the Verizon version only), text assist, integrated Quickoffice, VPN support, a redesigned launcher and full support for Bluetooth keyboards and SPP peripherals.
As for Pre 2 itself? Little is being revealed at the moment, but we're told to expect a 1GHz CPU, a five megapixel camera (LED flash, extended depth of field, geotagging, and video capture), glass display and a "sleeker, streamlined design" that still combines a touchpanel with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. In other words, it's a faster, slimmer Pre, and some would argue it's what the Pre Plus should've been. At any rate, SFR customers in France will get first dibs on Friday, with Verizon and an undisclosed carrier in Canada scheduled to get it "in the coming months." Oh, and as for US-based developers? They'll be able to purchase unlocked UMTS versions of the Pre 2 (!) in their homeland, though pricing remains elusive.
Update: The Pre 2 portal is now live, showcasing a 3.1-inch 480 x 320 (HVGA) multitouch display, a black enclosure, Exchange support, built-in GPS, ambient light / proximity sensors, an accelerometer, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, 16GB of inbuilt storage space, a battery good for around 5.5 hours of talking and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The developers of the popular mobile social networking tool TweetDeck have hit back after Apple CEO Steve Jobs claimed Android 'fragmentation' represented a 'daunting challenge' to developers.
In a controversial appearance in an earnings call, the Apple boss delivered a surprising set of criticisms against rivals from Google's Android, to 7-inch tablets and Blackberry-maker RIM. Jobs spent the most time discussing Android, calling the open/closed operating system speak from Google 'disingenuous' and a 'smoke screen' against the real issue, Android version fragmentation.
As one of the key arguments, Jobs pointed to the recent release of the TweetDeck client on Android. “They reported that they had to contend with more than a hundred different versions of Android software on 244 different handsets,” he said. “The multiple hardware and software iterations present developers with a daunting challenge. “
TweetDeck CEO Iain Dodsworth fired back in a tweet: “ Errr nope, no we didn't. It wasn't.” Dodsworth pointed out that the Android client was developed by just two people.
In a rather more cryptic response to the criticisms made by Jobs, Google's Android chief Andy Rubin tweeted a 'definition of open' before including the technical command line which would download the Android source code and build the open source OS from scratch for anyone.

Apple's all aglow with its fiscal triumphs, but that's nothing new. Here's something else that follows the Cupertino company like night follows the day: Verizon iPhone rumors. Boy Genius Report claims it's heard from one of its "solid Apple sources" that iPhone 3,2 (seen previously in iOS code) has hit "AP testing phase," which reportedly means final hardware and near-final software. Said source also claims it has a SIM card slot, which would be fine except for BGR's assertion that 3,2 is the oft-rumored CDMA iPhone -- you know, the one that Wall Street Journal is all but certain is coming next year. So how might these two apparently contradictory elements form some tangible paradox machine? One possibility the publication is suggesting is a CDMA / GSM dual-mode "global" phone that'd work on virtually all major carriers. Then again, it could just be a GSM iPhone 4 with some design finagling (antenna revision?). If any of this pans out, that is, but at least you can say you witnessed the Verizon iPhone rumor merging with existing iPhone 4 to form a mythical "carrier Voltron" device. Or something like that.

Research firm Gartner yesterday predicted that tablet sales would hit 19.5 million by the end of this year, rising 181 per cent to 54.8 million next year.
This would double again to 103 million units in 2012, it estimated, and come 2014 more than 208 million consumers would pick up tablets.
Said Carolina Milanesi, vice president of research at Gartner, "The all-in-one nature of media tablets will result in the cannibalisation of other consumer electronics devices such as e-readers, gaming devices and media players."
Gartner felt that netbooks would particularly suffer as a result of tablets' growth, which in turn would cause North America's market share of tablet sales to decline.
It estimated that the US and Canada would comprise 61 per cent of worldwide tablet sales by the end of this year, falling to 43 per cent by 2014.
In response to the predictions, Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick was optimistic about tablets as a gaming platform when talking to Bloomberg TV.
He predicted great things to come from the iPad and its rivals, but expressed minimal interest in publishing games for the current generation.
"It's small for a tablet because we support largely consoles, that's the bulk of our business," he said. "Why's that the bulk of our business? Because it allows us to do incredibly robust products.
"However, what's exciting about the tablet revolution, if you believe in Moore's Law, which I do, is that tablets are going to become more and more robust platforms and they'll allow you to do incredible things and they're portable, they're cheap and they're getting cheaper."
While Apple is the leading tablet-maker, selling 4.2 million iPads over its last quarter, a range of cheaper Android-based models are slowly arriving at retail.

Mobile game app Angry Birds has totalled over two million downloads on the Android platform in five days, according to developer Rovio.
The game, which sat at the top of the sales chart on Apple's App Store for some time, was released on the GetJar app service for Android last Friday, 15 October. Reportedly, a rush of 90,000 downloads within 'seconds' caused the GetJAr servers to crash under the strain and the app was moved to the Android Market.
Yesterday, the official twitter account for the Finnish developer announced that the game had surpassed 2 million downloads.
The game is available in paid for and free, ad-supported versions, it is currently unknown how the sales figures are split between the two SKUs.

Apple has announced its fiscal Q4 results for 2010, including sales of 14.1 million iPhones - up 91% from the same quarter last year.
The company also shifted 4.19 million iPads during the quarter, and 9.05 million iPods, although Apple didn't say how many of those were app-capable iPod touches.
What is clear is the sheer lucrativeness of Apple's iOS business. The company generated record revenues of $20.34 billion during the quarter, up from $12.21 billion in its Q4 last year.
Apple's quarterly net profit was $4.31 billion. up from $2.53 billion a year ago.
"We are blown away to report over $20 billion in revenue and over $4 billion in after-tax earnings—both all-time records for Apple," said CEO Steve Jobs, in a statement.
"iPhone sales of 14.1 million were up 91 percent year-over-year, handily beating the 12.1 million phones RIM sold in their most recent quarter. We still have a few surprises left for the remainder of this calendar year."
However, Jobs had a lot more to say about RIM, not to mention Android, in the subsequent earnings call with analysts.

The discovery of a heretofore unknown key in a FaceTime property list has raised the possibility that future versions of the app will support conference video calls. A forum member over at iPodTouchFans.com spotted a key called...; it is set to 'false' by default, but setting it to 'true' doesn't seem to have any effect. Although this would be a fairly useless feature on iPhones and iPod touches, an iPad with a front-facing camera would certainly be able to benefit from the ability to talk to multiple video callers at once given its larger screen.

With the release of RC4 of Greenpois0n, the jailbreak tool now adds support for the iPod Touch 2G, both MC and MB models both of which are untethered jailbreaks.
pod2g tweeted earlier about his second exploit, which he calls “steaks4uce”, which exists for the iPod Touch 2G. Using this method alongside Greenpois0n, and using Comex's tether hack, greenpois0n adds the iPod Touch 2G to it's list.
Both Windows and Mac versions are available via the greenpois0n website.

The iPhone can do many things, but "hypnotize passers-by with a dazzling array of colors" is not typically listed among its strong suits. That's where the iGlo LED Set comes into play, bundling a WiFi-enabled strip of 120 multi-color LEDs -- measuring some five meters in length -- with iPhone and iPad apps that can control them. $299 is a small price to pay for this kind of portable party-making power, considering you just spent that much on a bottle of Blue Label for Steve's birthday party last week... and that didn't turn you into the most popular guy in the room.

Archos swore up and down that this one was set to ship in "mid-October," which means that the pre-order link at Amazon should switch over in a matter of nanoseconds, minutes or hours. For those in need of a refresher, the Archos 43 is an Android-based portable media player with a 4.3-inch touchpanel, support for a zillion (give or take) file formats, an HDMI output and integrated WiFi. The 16GB model is available to claim for $249.99, so if you've been waiting for your chance to hop in the purchase line, this is it. Don't blow it.

Microsoft's serious about making Kinect a success. A $500 million kind of serious. That's the latest report, courtesy of the New York Post, on the change Steve Ballmer and company intend to drop to make sure that every living and breathing creature in the US knows about the controller-free controller this holiday season. That mirrors earlier analyst estimates placing the Windows Phone 7 marketing budget at a similar figure, which in total would amount to a cool billion dollars in advertising expenditure. We already know Microsoft's scooped the Old Spice Guy for WP7, but Kinect is getting the extra special carpet bombing treatment with Burger King, Pepsi, YouTube, Nickelodeon, Disney, Glee, Dancing with the Stars, People and InStyle magazines, and even Times Square all having a role to play in spreading the word. Yup, it's gonna be pretty hard to miss it.

Capcom's latest title in the Monster Hunter franchise has topped one million users, despite being a mobile only title.
Monhan Diary Mobile Felyne Village is only the latest in a long line of Monster Hunter titles to see great numbers in Japan, but is the first to do so on a mobile platform.
The game, which is Capcom's first foray into social mobile gaming, has seen over one million users sign up since launching on DeNA's Mobagetown service on August 10, having passed the half-million mark in just 17 days.
"In addition to the lovable characters and the heart-warming world, the accessibility of the game itself as well as its communication-rich social aspects has helped this supplementary social game reach and surpass the one million user mark in unprecedented speed," said Capcom in a statement, translated by Andriasang.
"An effective promotional campaign has also helped to attract not only fans of the Monster Hunter series, but new users as well."
Capcom is currently holding an introduce a friend scheme with in-game items as rewards to incentivise the further spread of the game.

Apple's mobile application and game marketplace has now passed 300,000 entries, reaching that milestone in just over two years.
The App Store currently attracts around 1000 new Apps per day, reports Mobclix (via VentureBeat), with the ratio of paid to free entries approximately 69 versus 31 per cent.
Games constitute the second-most popular download category at 16.6 per cent (just behind books at 16.8 per cent).
The 300,000 total count is not exact, with tens of thousands of Apps now inactive - but conversely many non-US Apps are not covered.
The rival Android Marketplace is fast on the rise, however – currently reported as exceeding 113,000. This may increase as a wave of Android-based iPad rivals, such as the Advent Vega and Archos 70/101, arrive at retail next month.

Apple launched its Game Center connected gaming community for iPhone and iPod touch in early September, as part of its iOS 4.1 software. So how's it doing?
The company has not provided any official figures, but there is a certain amount of transparency built in to Game Center, since on your device, its app shows the number of connected players for each game.
Sister site ME did some number-crunching, pulling out the stats for 20 of the games on our iPhone, and comparing them where possible to publicly-announced sales figures for those games.
The idea: to see if any conclusions can be drawn about Game Center's popularity - if x people have bought a game, and y of them are counted in its Game Center leaderboards, then perhaps the percentage of iOS users who've signed up for Apple's community is z.
In a word, no. The data is interesting, but defies any attempts to make such general conclusions.

VLC Media Player is headed to the iPhone and is currently waiting for App Store approval. Applidium released the iPad version about a month ago and is now readying a universal update to the popular video player. Only the most current generations of iPhone and iPod Touch have the enough horsepower to decode movies with a fast enough frame rate to be enjoyable, for now. New features Applidium have included with this update are:
Playback should be smoother than the previous version. Indeed, we’ve enabled low-level assembly optimizations to use the ARMv7 core of the Apple A4 processor as efficiently as possible.
It’s still not possible to use the hardware video decoder, so unfortunately in most cases 720p video still won’t play smoothly.

The iPad is not yet available in Taiwan, and nobody at Apple has given any indication of when it will be, despite having received official approval from the government agency that regulates communications on the island. According to an employee at one Apple retailer, the iPad is being held back until iOS can support the traditional Chinese characters used in Taiwan.
Chin-hsien Lo, deputy director of the technologies administration department at the Taiwan National Communications Commission, announced that both the WiFi only and WiFi+3G iPads received all the necessary certifications. "The NCC has completed the required inspections and the products can now be sold in Taiwan," Lo told The China Post. The Post contacted people at Apple's Taipei office but they said that they had no idea of the schedule,
