It's not just Facebook for Android that's getting an update today -- Twitter just pushed out a new version of its Android app, and while it doesn't add a ton of new features, it's gotten a big speed boost and some polish. The biggest addition is pull-to-refresh, which the iPhone client has had for a while, as an option bar that's revealed by swiping on a tweet. There's also new quoting options for retweets and avatar photos are now high-res, which is nice. We just tried it out and it is indeed faster, which is nice, but we noticed that avatars don't load in right away while you scroll -- they're generic until you stop. Just a minor niggle, and you've no reason not to upgrade -- it's free, after all. Hit market or scan the QR code after the break.
P.S.- Hmm, a big Twitter app update on the same day as a Facebook event? That timing feels like a little more than a coincidence to us, especially since Facebook is gunning hard for location-based check-ins, which is traditionally Twitter's domain. Dare we say that this relationship is complicated?

While the HTML5 and Flash standard debate rages, Apple, a major promoter of HTML5, has allowed its iOS devices to run Flash videos. Apple has given approval to an app developed by Skyfire that translates Flash code into HTML5. According to CNN, when a user clicks on a Flash video the Skyfire app downloads the Flash video on Skyfire's server where the video is decoded and then encoded in HTML5 and is delivered to an iOS device. The app is embedded in the Safari browser.

Microsoft has outlined how it might use the little publicized 'kill switch' in Windows Phone 7 handsets. 'We don't really talk about it publicly because the focus is on testing of apps to make sure they're okay, but in the rare event that we need to, we have the tools to take action,' said Todd Biggs, director of product management for Windows Phone Marketplace. According to Biggs, Microsoft's strict testing of apps when they are submitted for inclusion in Marketplace should minimize kill switch use, but he explained how the company could remove apps from the marketplace or phones, when devices check-in to the system. 'We could unpublish it from the catalog so that it was no longer available, but if it was very rogue then we could remove applications from handsets - we don't want things to go that far, but we could.

Epic Games and ChAIR Entertainment have officially named their Unreal 3 Engine project for iOS devices as Infinity Blade, and set a release date of holiday season 2010.
The game will feature the same technology used in the two companies' free demo, Epic Citadel, which was the first app to utilise Unreal Engine 3 technology on an iOS device.
"More than one million people have been introduced to the world of 'Infinity Blade' through our free app, 'Epic Citadel,' and soon everyone will be able to play our first fully featured game for iOS devices," said Epic president Mike Capps.
"With 'Infinity Blade,' ChAIR has created an amazing looking, incredibly fun game that really demonstrates the potential of triple-A mobile gaming."
The game will launch on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch with a single player mode featuring action-based sword fighting and RPG aspects, but Epic has announced that free updates will bring multiplayer modes and Game Center support.

The iPhone version of mobile browser Skyfire has gone live on the App Store a day earlier than expected, following its approval by Apple.
Reports had suggested that the app would be available on Thursday, but it's live in Apple's store right now.
The browser's approval and release is significant, because it claims to be the first iPhone browser capable of showing Flash videos on websites.
Skyfire's technology transcodes the videos into the H.264 codec, to make them viewable on the Flash-averse iPhone.
Another interesting point is that the browser is a paid app for iPhone, costing $2.99 / ÂŁ1.79 in the App Store.
It joins Opera Mini on Apple's Store as a standalone non-Safari browser for iOS users.

Hello, my name is Justin McElroy, and I play a character called "Justin McElroy" on the popular Joystiq web site and podcast. I hope you'll indulge me for a second as I regale you with a story of my misspent youth. When I was growing up, I was always transfixed by FMV games. I begged and pleaded for a Sega CD, I've finished Dracula Unleashed more times than I care to admit ... hell, I own two copies of Wirehead. To this day, I don't understand the draw of these oft-clunky classics, but it's nothing I can escape or reason away. Before I'd reached my 15th birthday, I swore to friends, family, anyone who would listen that I would one day be the "world's greatest FMV gaming journalist."
You, with the privilege of a dozen years of insight on my younger self, know how this story ends. FMV games have, for reasons beyond me, fallen by the wayside. You now know that the deviant, cretinous masses would prefer to see digital puppets dance on a screen than real humans -- their brethren -- leading out real, interactive drama in front of real, low-quality cameras.
But today, if only for a moment, I have managed to wash the bitter flavor of unfulfilled dreams from my palate. For today, I have written a post about The 7th Guest on iPhone, and I'm following it up with this:
An HD version of Dragon's Lair is now on iPad. It costs five dollars.
That's two FMV posts ... in a row. Maybe a drop in the bucket to 15-year-old Justin, who dreamed of visiting the set of Sewer Shark 3 and sitting down to heartfelt, career-spanning interviews with Rusty Dillen. But today, for nearly 30-year-old Justin, it's enough.
God bless.

The iPad's ticket to multitasking freedom -- better known as iOS 4.2 -- has moves past the beta phase and onto GM, which means retail units should be seeing it soon. Besides the iPad, Apple is also providing builds for the second, third, and fourth generations of the iPod touch, along with the iPhone 3G, 3GS, and 4... so if you've got a friend with an iPhone Developer Program subscription, now would be a great time to get cozy.
Update: Apple made some last minute tweaks that give fast access to brightness, volume, and AirPlay controls right in the multitasking bar (pictured after the break). Apple's also on the verge of allowing MobileMe service logins using an Apple ID.

Epic believes that it could be possible to put a game the size of Gears of War on the iPhone in as little as two years time.
Donald Mustard, creative director at Epic subsidiary Chair Entertainment, is currently developing the just-announced Infinity Blade for the iPhone – the first mobile game to run off the Unreal Engine. Like many gamers, he was reluctant to see Apple's smartphone as a proper gaming machine. Not any more.
"I didn't take it that seriously until we started making this game," he explained. "Now I'm like, 'Oh my goodness, this is literally going to be the best looking handheld game ever made'. It's way beyond what a DS or PSP could do.
"I think it's going to be an interesting future, especially if in two years we can really run Gears of War on an iPhone."
He's not far wrong. Have a look at the gallery below – Infinity Blade looks incredible.
Technical director Geremy Mustard then chimed in, "If not two years, then certainly five years. Well, it could be as soon as two years but within five years that will certainly be the case. It will at least be powerful enough to do that.
"Whether it'll be viable from a gaming standpoint that's a different question. Can I look at a little screen for two hours at a time and play a game steadily?"
Donald continued, "We've just been blown away by the amount of graphical power that we can be pushing through these tiny little devices that are in all our pockets.
"That's one of the reasons why Epic are so interested in getting their engine onto these devices. Projecting out three or four years into the future, if the current trends stay true, these devices are going to be just as powerful as the Xbox 360. We'll have a truly powerful console just sitting in all of our pockets.
"If that's the case, there's going be a lot more high-end games on the iPhone. We're just on the cusp of that. It's exciting.
Donald went on to reveal that Epic has had huge interest from other developers over licensing the Unreal Engine for iPhone development since the reveal of the Epic Citadel tech demo last month, both for original IPs and for porting existing titles.
NOA's Reggie Fils-Aime's recent remark that he sees Apple as Nintendo's main rival suddenly seems rather prescient, especially taking into account Epic VP Mark Rein's claim that the 3DS is not powerful enough to handle the Unreal Engine.
"What is that going to mean for gaming?" Donald adds regarding the increasing power of the iPhone. "Am I going to be able to be able to play Red Dead Redemption on it then press pause, put it down in front of my TV and plug in an HDMI cable and keep going?
"There's such a cool future there. It's an interesting time to be a consumer right now and to be a developer."

Don't count the Symbian Foundation out just yet, because the European Commission has emerged like a knight in shining armor thanks to a €22 million public / private joint investment and a new consortium of some 24 organizations awkwardly called SYMBEOSE: "Symbian – the Embedded Operating System for Europe." Needless to say, it seems like some of the higher-ups across the continent are feeling a little emotional about the hometown platform -- especially now that it's starting to take a lot of heat -- and have thrown some skin in the game to keep things interesting. For its part, the Foundation says that the initiative (and presumably the money) will go toward developing "new core platform capabilities," exploring cloud computing, and broadening the platform's hardware ecosystem, among other things. Oh, and new Air Jordans would be nice. For Christmas, maybe.

Whether called the Pre 2 or Pre Plus 2, there's no denying that the first webOS 2.0 device is coming at us in a fast and furious fashion. Verizon docs already revealed it was on that carrier's November roadmap, and now HP's Facebook page for students has narrowed pre-order availability down to a specific date: November 8th. That's next Monday, folks! No more info is available at this time, such as whether that will include the promised unlocked GSM Pre 2s or whether they would be forthcoming at a later date. Either way, we're excited to see this 1GHz vessel sail in and bring us all that improved webOS goodness.

An analysis of Google Android Froyo's open source kernel has uncovered 88 critical flaws that could expose users' personal information. An analysis of the kernel used in Google's Android smartphone software has turned up 88 high-risk security flaws that could be used to expose users' personal information, security firm Coverity said in a report published on Tuesday. The results, published in the 2010 edition of the Coverity Scan Open Source Integrity Report, are based on an analysis of the Froyo kernel used in HTC's Droid Incredible handset. ... While Android implementations vary from device to device, Coverity said the same flaws were likely to exist in other handsets as well. Coverity uncovered a total of 359 bugs, about one-quarter of which were classified as high-risk.

Middleware firm Stonetrip has released a major new version of its multi-platform ShiVa3D engine, which most notably includes a unified authoring tool designed to port games to multiple platforms at once.
New plugins for the tool include PhysX, the Fmod sound library and ARToolkt, while ShiVa3D now also allows its users to code directly in either C, C++, Cocoa and Objective-C. It can additionally convert Lua to C++ to boost script performance.
The SDK includes a device input simulator for iPhone, iPad, Android and Palm, allowing those devices to communicate directly with the ShiVa editor.
"This ShiVa3D upgrade brings in some amazing new capabilities – the Unified Authoring Tool on its own, for example, makes creating games across desktop, console and mobile platforms a smooth, efficient, one-stop process," claimed Philip Belhassen, CEO of Stonetrip.
"Many of the new features are in direct response to feedback and consultation with our existing users. Others have been developed and introduced as part of our desire to make ShiVa3D 1.9 the most technologically advanced, most innovative, most reliable and most efficient 3D engine on the market today."
The upgrade is available for free (downloaded via the application itself) to ShiVa's 30,000 existing users, with a variety of licenses (including a royalty-free, multi-platform option) available to newcomers.

US social mobile gaming firm Aurora Feint says its OpenFeint platform is launching in a third wave of Android games this week.
Titles include PikPok's Flick Kick Football, ustwo's Dot 3, Distinctive Developments' Bonecruncher Soccer, and CrowdStar's Happy Island.
Existing developers seem happy with the impact OpenFeint has been having on Android since making the leap from iPhone, too.
Indie developer HyperBees claims that its Speedx 3D game saw a 39% increase in sales after adding OpenFeint.
Aurora Feint is hoping to boost the social effect with an update to its Android platform with Facebook Connect, so users can see what games their friends are playing.
"We’re seeing incredible growth on Android for new games and existing Android games relaunching with OpenFeint," says VP of marketing and developer relations Eros Resmini.
"With Facebook Connect coming soon more and more players will discover the Feint gaming network. Developers clearly love the Feint gaming network - we’re already in 80 games and are adding new games every day."

Microsoft may have missed out on being the first to stream Netflix in 1080p with surround sound, but it's still improving access to the service with a new app for Windows Phone 7 arriving on the same day a dashboard update brings Watch Instantly access to Xbox 360-owning Canadians. The free app should be easily found in the Marketplace Video Store, but just in case you don't have an HTC Surround or similar device in your immediate vicinity check out this demo from March embedded after the break.

We've talked before about Apple's plans to turn future iDevices into electronic wallets, allowing you to wave your phone over a reader to pay for things. Now, there's an unsourced report claiming that Apple has a much more "revolutionary" goal: putting your entire desktop on your phone so that any Mac can become your Mac.
Leander Kahney at Cult of Mac shared the interesting revelations from a source that asks to be anonymous in a report today entitled "iPhone 5 Will Enable Ambitious Remote Computing Program." According to the source, the iPhone 5 will allow a user to "carry a lot of their desktop data and settings with them

As with all patent applications, it's a bit early to get too excited about this one, but a recently published filing from Apple dubbed "Nitriding Stainless Steel for Consumer Electronic Products" is one of the more interesting we've seen from the company as of late, especially when you consider its recent acquisition of Liquidmetal's intellectual property. Whereas Liquidmetal promises to let Apple create metal devices that are stronger and not limited to the usual structural or strength limitations found in conventional metals, this new patent application suggests that the company might also be working on a nitride coating for stainless steel that's described as "both scratch and impact resistant." What's more, the application suggests that the coating would not affect the appearance of the underlying stainless steel, and not cause any RF interference either. As pointed out in the application itself, that means it could be used on laptops, portable media players and, yes, even cellphones -- or it could simply be filed away with the countless other applications that haven't seen the light of day. Here's hoping for the former.

There's always been tension between Apple's tight control of the iOS App Store and the DRM-free license requirements of the GPL, and it seems like things are coming to a head over VLC, the open-source video player. As you'll recall, VLC was just released for the iPad and iPhone in the past few months, but the port was done by a company called Applidium -- not VLC developer VideoLAN, which holds the copyright and licenses the code under the GPL. VideoLAN now says that since VLC for iOS includes Apple's FairPlay DRM, it's in violation of the GPL and must be pulled -- and that "concerned users are advised to look for applications on more open mobile platforms for the time being." That's certainly fair enough, although we do find it a bit sensationalist that the takedown notice was sent to Apple and not Applidium, since it's technically Applidium that violated the GPL. Then again, the statement was written by VideoLAN developer RĂ©mi Deni-Courmont, who is also senior MeeGo software engineer, so we can see why he'd be interested in promoting a "more open" project. Whatever the case, it doesn't seem like VLC for iOS is not long for this world -- you'd best go grab it as quickly as possible. Like, now.

Google's Android OS took a 44% share of all new smartphones bought in the US last quarter, according to research from both NPD Group and Canalys.
NPD's stats show that Android's runaway success is hurting Research In Motion's BlackBerry OS more than iPhone, however.
In Q2, the research firm had Android in the lead with 33%, followed by BlackBerry with 28% and iPhone with 22%.
In Q3, it claims Android increased to 44%, and BlackBerry fell to 22%, allowing iPhone to overtake it by increasing its market share to 23%.
"Much of Android’s quarterly share growth came at the expense of RIM, rather than Apple," says NPD's Ross Rubin.
"The HTC EVO 4G, Motorola Droid X, and other new high-end Android devices have been gaining momentum at carriers that traditionally have been strong RIM distributors, and the recent introduction of the BlackBerry Torch has done little to stem the tide."
iPhone 4 was the most popular handset sold in the US in Q3, according to NPD - that's out of all phones, not just smartphones - followed by the BlackBerry Curve 8500 series, LG Cosmos, Motorola Droid X and HTC EVO 4G.
Canalys US smartphone market share figures for Q3 back up NPD's conclusions, although the exact details vary - these are based on shipments rather than sales.
It pegs Android's Q3 shipments in the US at 9.1 million, giving it a 43.6% market share. It's followed by iPhone (5.5 million - 26.2%) and BlackBerry (5.1 million - 24.2%).
Fourth-placed Windows Mobile is a long way behind with 0.6 million shipments and a 3% market share.
