Netflix already added video out support to its iPad app a few months ago, and it's now finally brought the same functionality to iPhone and iPod touch users as well. Unfortunately, it's not quite bringing all iPhone and iPod touch users up to speed, as the app will only support video out on the iPhone 4 and fourth generation iPod touch. If that doesn't pose a problem for you, however, you can grab the updated app for free right now from your favorite source of iPhone apps.

A purported leak from the parent company of an electronics chain in Great Britain is giving the first hint of what the new Samsung Galaxy Tab might cost. The entry level model of the so-called 'iPad killer' will retail for £599.99 - the equivalent of $950 US - without a contract, according to Paul Lamkin at Pocket-Lint, who cites anonymous sources at the DSG Group. This compares to £529 for an unlocked iPad with similar specs (though the iPad has a screen almost three inches larger than the 7-inch Galaxy Tab).
DSG Group is the owner of UK retailers Currys, Dixons and PC World, which have said they'd be selling the Galaxy Tab through both unlocked and carrier-subsidized arrangements. The cost of the Galaxy Tab with a contract is unknown as yet, but it's instructive to compare the £599.99 ($948 US) recommended retail price for an unlocked 7-inch, 16GB Galaxy Tab to the 9.7-inch..

When Apple addressed a congressional inquiry on privacy in July, the company claimed that it couldn't actually track a particular iPhone in real time, as its transactions were anonymous and thoroughly randomized. Bucknell University network admin Eric Smith, however, theorizes that third-party application developers and advertisers may not have the same qualms, and could be linking your device to your name (and even your location) whenever they transmit data. Smith, a two-time DefCon wardriving champ, studied 57 top applications in the iTunes App Store to see what they sent out, and discovered that some fired off the iPhone's UDID and personal details in plaintext (where they can ostensibly be intercepted), including those for Amazon, Chase Bank, Target and Sam's Club, though a few were secured with SSL. Though UDIDs are routinely used by apps to store personal data and combat piracy, what Smith fears is that a database could be set up linking these UDIDs to GPS coordinates or GeoIP, giving nefarious individuals or organizations knowledge of where you are.
It's a scary idea, but before you direct hate Apple's way, it's important to note that Cupertino's not necessarily the one to blame. iOS is arguably the best at requiring users to opt-in to apps that perform GPS tracking; transmitting the UDID and account information together publicly is strictly against the rules; and we'd like to think that if users provide their personal information to an application developer in the first place, they'd understand what they're doing. Of course, not all users monitor those things closely, and plaintext transmission of personal details is obviously a big no-no.
Smith's piece opens and closes on the idea that Apple's UDID is like the unique identifier of Intel's Pentium III processor, which generated privacy concerns around the turn of the century, and we wonder if ths story might play out the same way -- following government inquiries, Intel offered a software utility that let individuals manually disable their chip's unique ID, and removed it from future CPUs.

Traditionally, the low tech, low cost nature of mobile platforms made casual titles a natural fit for publishers and players. But with today’s powerful processors, 3D graphics and new touchscreen controls, EA have begun forging a new wave of core games on mobile platforms.
At an event in London, EA took us through their mobile line-up, which included FIFA 11, EA Sports MMA, Mirror’s Edge and more.
FIFA 11 (iPhone, iPod Touch)
New licenses, animations and motion-captured players were EA’s core features for the mobile version of their ever-popular football franchise. The bright screen of an iPhone 4 certainly backed up those claims when we tried it ourselves. A virtual analogue stick is used to control players, while actions, like passing and shooting, are selected with you other hand. The choice of 500 league teams and 50 real world stadiums should give the game credibility in the eyes of sports fans.
EA Sports MMA (iPhone)
THQ’s swings have failed to leave their opponent groggy. Using assets from the console version, EA Mobile are launching a counter attack with their inaugural MMA mobile game. Producer Nick Wong emphasized that control has been a top priority for the development team. In MMA mobile the screen is split into four invisible quadrants each corresponding to your fighter’s limbs. A combination of taps and swipes are used to perform attacks. In our hands-on, we sampled standing, clinch and submission portions. Control for each discipline is context specific. Going for familiarity, EA have fighters such as Jason Miller and Randy Couture. EA Sports MMA is an ambitious offering and evidence that EA believe the time is right for more complex mobile games.
Mirror’s Edge (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad)
Though it defeats the purpose of the console game’s design, Mirror’s Edge appears to have been far more successful as a side-scrolling platformer than a slightly dodgy first-person one. Of all EA’s action games on show this one was immediately engrossing. Swipes are used to make Faith jump, duck and roll her way across stark white rooftops. Though noticeably jagged, there are reams of detail to the 3D cityscapes and buildings that sustain your acrobatics. Its looks alone will attract attention, and, in the wake of Canabalt, a more traditional platformer could be precisely what handheld players want. Get a taste for side-scrolling Mirror’s Edge at www.mirrorsedge2d.com.
R-Type (iPhone, iPod Touch)
IGN have ranked R-Type in their all-time Top 10 Toughest Games to Beat, and they’re not wrong. Rose-tinted nostalgia must have been a major part in this arcade relic getting a mobile revival. You hold the device flat, tilting it to move your ship about on the default setting. Ported by DotEmu, all eight levels from the original arcade version are present and a trio of control methods. Unlikely to spread through word of mouth due to its punishing difficulty, brand cachet will have to suffice.
Yahtzee (iPad)
Yet another reason not to buy those tempting travel editions while you’re waiting in the duty-free lounge. Yahtzee on iPad is captivating thanks to its colourful HD visuals. In this classic dice game the aim is to score the most points with the sum of five dice. You can play head-to-head or pass the iPad around, but the novelty of touchscreen dice shaking coupled with convincing sound effects makes the illusion of playing virtual Yahtzee exciting in itself.

Yet another really complex Apple patent has been uncovered by Jack Purcher, who runs the Patently Apple site, and this one's a doozy. Apple's apparently working on new touchscreen controls which it calls "virtual input tools." The screen would display an image of, say, a trackpad in 2D or 3D, and you'd use the virtual trackpad the same way you'd use a physical trackpad. I'm having a pretty hard time wrapping my head around this one

If you haven't set foot in an Apple store during the last 48 hours, perhaps you're unaware of a big return at the tech giant's retail outlets. With the conclusion of the free bumper program this past Thursday, September 30th, Apple waited only a matter of hours to begin restocking the shelves of their retail stores with bumpers for sale.
So the bumpers back, having been missing in action in both retail stores and the online Apple store during the free case program that, for a time, received every bit as much attention as the new iPhone. It now appears that as far as Apple is concerned, Antennagate is officially over. And the company is doing everything in its power to get past the issue and return to business as usual, which of course, involves selling the bumpers that, for many, curbed the reception troubles of the 4th generation Apple smartphone. Still, Apple has made it clear that it will address continuing problems on a case-by-case - no pun intended - basis.

Until recently, most studies, surveys, polls, market analysis, and good old fashioned word on the street all suggested the same thing - the iPhone 4 is 2010's biggest attention-getter in the mobile space and, arguably, the most popular and talked-about smartphone ever produced.
But, in recent weeks, the iPhone has seemingly begun to lose its stranglehold on consumers. Based on the latest findings of ChangeWave Research about smartphone preferences, only 38% of prospective smartphone buyers surveyed want iOS on their next smartphone. Relatively speaking, that figure represents a significant 12 point drop from this past June, a month in which the new 4th generation iPhone was unveiled and a whopping 50% of all would-be smartphone buyers said they wanted an iPhone. Although the "freshness" of the 4th gen iPhone release in June likely skewed the results of the survey to the upside, the precipitous decline is noteworthy, nonetheless.

You know what the biggest problem with Xbox Live is? No, it's not that pesky friend limit -- it's the fact that I'm not connected when I'm getting my half-dairy mocha whip down at the Starbucks. Or how when I'm at the grocery store, picking up some veggies, I can't trash-talk with my bros and stay plugged into my virtual world. You know Neo was, like, hooked up to the Matrix the entire time. How do you think he got so good at it?
In all seriousness, Microsoft general manager Matt Thompson thinks that being connected all of the time is the biggest selling point of the new Windows Phone 7 OS, Venture Beat reports. That's what Microsoft hopes will give it an edge over Apple and its iPhone.
"Clearly the phone is you, so the most unique thing we're trying to do is bring Xbox Live so you can carry the online 'you' into the rest of the world," he said. Sure, it makes sense -- a gamer spends a lot of time building up Gamerscore and participating in that virtual world, so giving them a way to spend even more time there seems like a given. We just think Thompson's selling the whole thing short: it's all about that FM radio. Finally, we can listen to NPR on our phone!

Well, there you have it, kids. Your new favorite hobby has gone from having a confirmed exploit to a legitimate jailbreak in the space of a mere couple of days. MuscleNerd reports that the Shatter jailbreaking endeavor has claimed its latest iOS victim today, though as you can see for yourself, it's "not quite ready for prime time yet." App installations still have to be figured out, but at least the door's been opened for making some good, if not magical, things happen.

The Apple rumor that keeps on giving -- the touchscreen iMac -- has just been given another shot of monger juice. DigiTimes (who else) cites industry sources who claim again that Sintek Photonics is shipping Apple touchpanels to sample for use in a future 20-plus-inch iMac. Specifically, the panels are of the projected capacitance type (same as iPhone/iPod touch/iPad) and integrate the touch sensor with the glass cover for reduced thickness and weight while exhibiting "good" viewing angles and brightness. While the image above, extracted from an Apple patent, gives us a clue as to how a touchscreen iMac might be used, we remain unconvinced of its advantages (drawing stylus, anyone?). Then again, we're sure Apple has lots of whacky products in house for R&D so why not one more.

Android may be climbing the charts when it comes to market share, and the Market may be quickly approaching the 100,000 apps mark, but the whole thing is hardly a global proposition. As of earlier this week, paid apps were able to be purchased in just 14 countries, submitted by developers of just nine nationalities. That changes now, with Google adding 20 countries to its list of approved submitters, meaning developers living in 29 nations are eligible to submit paid apps to the Market. Over the next two weeks the purchasing of those apps will be flipped on for users in 18 countries, 32 in all that will have the "buy" button enabled -- music to the ears of Java app developers everywhere. Which flags are newly embracing app capitalism?

It looks like iPhone users are not immune to the types of data leaks recently discovered on the Android platform. Researchers looked at the top free applications available from the App Store and discovered that '68% of these applications were transmitting UDIDs to servers under the application vendor's control each time the application is launched.' The iPhone's Unique Device ID, or UDID, cannot be changed, nor can its transmission be disabled by the user.

Details of the launch plans of Microsoft's new Windows Phone 7 have been revealed by the Wall Street Journal.
The launch is said to be "centered" in New York with events in other cities simultaneously according to people "familiar with the launch plans" cited by the WSJ.
The launch event will take place on the 11th of October and US carrier AT&T will begin selling them a month later.
Echoing an exclusivity deal with the iPhone, AT&T has also secured an exclusive period in the vitally important US market although it's expected not to last as long as the enduring iPhone exclusivity.

Texas based Spacetime Studios is preparing to license out a 3D MMO engine that it says can unite players on otherwise incompatible devices.
Following an investment injection from Insight Venture Partners, the developer is planning to extend its technology platform and “pioneer new functionality for the mobile multiplayer gaming market”.
Spacetime’s 3D MMO game engine, which will soon be available for developers, is said can allow for players on PC, Android and iOS to interact in the same world.
“The Spacetime Engine offers seamless global multiplayer gameplay to anyone with an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch over 3G, Edge, and wireless networks, [and] we plan to add Android and PC users to the mix.” said the studio’s co-founder Anthony Sommers.
“In the near future, it will be possible to be on the bus in California with your iPhone, playing with someone in a park in France on their Android device, and both be playing in the same server set with someone in South Korea on their PC.”

A new report from the Asian supply chain indicates that Apple has chosen Qualcomm to produce the baseband chips for the next-generation iPhone and iPad. Qualcomm, which originally developed the CDMA protocol used on Verizon's network is also working on a dual-mode chip that would allow the same device to work on multiple networks. However, the story in the Economic Daily News did not specifically say Apple would be using such a chip in future devices.
Apple has always used Infineon as the baseband chip manufacturer for its mobile devices. However, Infineon's wireless unit was sold to Intel for $1.4 billion dollars, and while Intel's CEO claims that Steve Jobs is "very happy" about the deal, there has been tension between the two companies since Intel started working with Google on its Google Tv product.

A developer in Europe has found the first indication that iPads running iOS 4.2 will be able to tether. Another user in the UK also sees the "Internet Tethering" configuration option in the Cellular Data Settings pane, but the option is still unavailable on iPads running the 4.2 beta in the US. In all likelihood, the feature will support wired tethering, rather than mobile-to-mobile "hotspot" tethering * la MyWi.
Acording to 9to5Mac, a dev in Sweden who was running iOS 4.2 beta 2 on the 3 Sverige network noticed an "Internet Tethering" section of the APN Settings pane under Settings: Cellular Data. The section asks for the APN, username and password separate from the cellular carrier data network access credentials.

Look, BMW -- we appreciate that you were the first automaker to provide seamless iPod integration way back when, but seriously, did anyone on the design squad look at this abomination before shipping it off to France? As the story goes, the aforesaid automaker has demonstrated the first "official" iPad-vehicle integration setup at this year's Paris Auto Show, and to be frank, it's heinous. The idea here is to provide world-class rear-seat entertainment, while apparently destroying aesthetics in one fell swoop. It's just about too hideous to be true, but the iconic "BMW" logo on the mounting brackets all but confirms the authenticity. Perhaps you folks should consult with any number of the skilled DIYers out there before shooting for the stars with version 2.0?

After developing and using TaintDroid, several universities found that of 30 popular free Android apps, half were sharing GPS data and phone numbers with advertisers and remote servers. A few months ago, one app was sending phone numbers to a remote server in China but today the situation looks a lot more pervasive. In their paper (PDF), the researchers blasted Google saying 'Android's coarse grained access control provides insufficient protection against third-party applications seeking to collect sensitive data.' Google's response: 'Android has taken steps to inform users of this trust relationship and to limit the amount of trust a user must grant to any given application developer. We also provide developers with best practices about how to handle user data. We consistently advise users to only install apps they trust.'
