The bad news just keeps coming for Apple. The US Government has ruled that owners of the iPhone are legally able to ‘jailbreak’ their phones, a process that allows then to run unvalidated code of the machines.
Owners usually jailbreak iPhones so to run programs not obtained via iTunes. This typically includes things such as software emulators, feature-rich programs that boost functionality or, more often than not, illegally pirated software.
Until now Apple has successfully argued that ‘jailbreaking’ a phone contravened a federal law that prohibits users from bypassing technical measures implemented by companies in their products.
However, one inclusion a new set of modifications to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act has created a number of new exemptions – including mobile handsets, of which the iPhone obviously is one.
The ruling will also apply to Google Android devices.
Apple has never prosecuted anyone for jailbreaking an iPhone, instead preferring to disable known hacks via its regular firmware updates. Though running pirated software remains illegal, the news will still likely prove a boost for the already healthy hacker community that surrounds Apple’s device.

With the iControlPad seemingly slipping further and further from reality, iPhone gamers with an affinity for buttons have fewer reasons to get out of bed in the morning and face the world. If that's you then it's time to wake up, Sunshine, because the iPhone Game Pad is here to bring a little light to your life. It's a somewhat chubby slip-on case that, as of now, works only with the original model iPhone. (There's a 3G/3GS model to come.) On the face it offers four primary control buttons plus a D-pad, what appears to be Select and Start buttons, plus a pair of shoulder buttons atop. This combination should make it perfect for emulation hounds or any 'ol heathen who values tactility over design purity. As of now it's just a prototype, but if you have the resources to bring this thing to production the folks at CP Design who crafted it would surely love to hear from you.

July 26th, 2010, 20:23 Posted By: wraggster
This is a wild one, and we're still parsing through the announcement, but on the surface it looks like the Library of Congress has added new anti-circumvention exceptions to the DMCA that, among other things, allow people to tweak their handsets for the purpose of installing legally obtained software -- known as jailbreaking in iOS land, and rooting in the Android / webOS world. Check out the full statement from the Librarian of Congress, which is mostly an update of existing exceptions on record, after the break, but here's the primary excerpt:
Computer programs that enable wireless telephone handsets to execute software applications, where circumvention is accomplished for the sole purpose of enabling interoperability of such applications, when they have been lawfully obtained, with computer programs on the telephone handset.
Now, before all you EFFers go all totally wild (although it's undoubtedly a win for the EFF line of thinking on this issue), you should know that this in no way requires Apple to jailbreak your phone for you, or lay down its arms in this ongoing fight. Basically, they just can't sue you for the specific act of breaking their protections, but there's nothing stopping them from putting those protections in there in the first place, or for suing you for an infringement not covered in this exception -- like distributing Apple code in a non-Apple-approved way, or installing illegal or pirated software. Not that any of you jailbreakers would ever do that. What's more, the DMCA still broadly forbids distributing to the public any "technology, product, service, device, component, or part thereof" that's primarily designed to break access controls, so Apple can always go after the Dev Team directly -- and we'd still keep those dreams of opening Joe's Jailbreak Hut on ice for now.
On a more minor note, the language pertaining to unlocking a handset to work on another wireless network has also been expanded from "firmware" in 2006 to "firmware or software" in the 2010 revision. Also, and very exciting for the YouTube set, the section pertaining to cracking a DVD video and excerpting scenes for commentary or criticism has been expanded beyond educational use into documentary and non-commercial applications.

The Indian government has unveiled a $35 touchscreen tablet that can handle web browsing, video conferencing word processing.
The BBC reports that the country's Human Resource Development Minister is currently seeking a manufacturing partner for the device, which it hopes to launch next year.
Students are the target market for the device, which will run on the Linux OS and was inspired partly by the '$110 laptops' devised by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The HTC HD2 did it, and so did the iPhone 3GS (assuming you jailbroke), but now you can get your blocky amnesiac ex-SOLDIER action on Android courtesy of ZodTTD and yongzh. Their PSX4Droid app just launched on the Android Market for $5.99, and -- despite a few glitches -- it emulates PlayStation games like a charm, complete with multiple scaling modes and save states. Watch a Galaxy S rock the likes of Final Fantasy VII and Ridge Racer after the break, plus Crash Bandicoot on a Nexus One and some paired Wiimote action with a Dell Streak. Then, challenge yourself to adhere to intellectual property law instead of immediately hunting down ROMs and a BIOS file. We dare you.

Well, there's nothing like masking bad news with good news, right Apple? Just moments after quietly announcing that the white iPhone 4 is now scheduled to ship sometime between tomorrow and your New Year's Eve party, the company has also fired up its iPhone 4 Case Program. Just as Jobs promised last week at an emergency press event, this program will ensure that anyone who purchases an iPhone 4 prior to September 30th will be able to receive an iPhone 4 Bumper or select third-party case from the company at no charge. 'Course, you need to be located in a country or territory that Apple actually ships to, but if that's all squared away, feel free to hit up the App Store to download the iPhone 4 Case Program app. Once there, you'll need to sign into your iTunes Store account, select your Bumper or case and wait oh-so-patiently (read: "3 to 5 weeks"). Better hurry -- wouldn't want the servers to get overloaded, now would we?
Oh, and if you happened to have already purchased a Bumper, the company should be hitting your credit card with a full refund (including any applicable taxes and shipping) momentarily. As for the case / Bumper choices? Every single option is available in any color you like... so long as it's black, of course. There's a black Apple Bumper option, an Incase Snap Case, Belkin Shield Micra, Griffin Motif, Griffin Reveal, Speck Fitted and Speck PixelSkin HD, but again, don't go in hoping to select your favorite hue. Yeah, you're free to bicker about free things -- we won't judge.
Update: If you're one of those wise guys who purchased an iPhone 4 right away just to sell it, you can forget about getting a free case for the handset you no longer own. Apple has arranged this so that only one case can be ordered per iPhone 4, so even if you ordered two under your account name, you'll need two phones to place both of those orders. Check out the error message below if you still don't believe us.

Just moment after confirming an indefinite delay to the white version of the iPhone 4, Apple has finally detailed how owners of the black version of the phone can go about claiming their free cases.
Apple is giving out free cases, of course, as a response to the ‘antennagate’ scandal that has gripped the firm since the launch of iPhone 4 last month.
Users wanting to take advantage of the offer must download a free app called ‘iPhone 4 Case Program’.
Through the app one of eight cases can then be selected – an Apple official black Bumper (no other colours are included in the deal), the Incase Snap, the Incase Snap Clear, the Belkin Shield Micra, the Griffin Motif, the Griffin Reveal Etch, the Speck Fitted Case and the Speck Pixel Skin HD.
Cases must be applied for by August 22nd or within 30 days of buying an iPhone 4 and will run until September 30th.
Those who have already bought an Apple bumper on their credit card will have already been refunded. Anyone who bought one in an Apple Store is eligible for either a cash refund of a gift card.

Apple has released a statement saying that the highly-anticipated white version of the iPhone 4 will now not be available until later this year.
Stressing that availability of the black model will remain unaffected, the company said white models of iPhone 4 'have continued to be more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected'.
Apple had originally earmarked the white iPhone 4 for a June release, and had already pushed that back to July.
There's no word on the exact nature of the problem, but issues relating to colorants used have been widely speculated.
It's more bad news for a product that has endured more bad news than most of Apple's creations - last week the company called an emergency press conference to address issues with the handet.s signal reception.

News via http://www.summeli.fi/?p=1790
the gpSP is a gameboy advance emulator originally written by Exophase. And now it’s ported to the Symbian OS!
This is a small patch for the previous version, so no real need to update for Nokia users. However Samsung users might want to test this one ;-)
I have been a bit lazy in gpsp development. I’m currently waiting for more stuff from Qt Mobility project. The current version give only 8khz mono audio, while I would like to have at least 22100hz stereo. I still might implement the audio with standard Symbian API’s. I just would like to wait for the Qt API stuff, since then I would keep the maximum compatibility to Symbian^4 and even to the upcoming Meego. Bot of them should fully support all Qt mobility APIs according to Nokia.
gpSP mainview
What’s new:
Support for Samsung i8910
Polished mainview
fixed the common settings bug with AntSnesQt
few other minor bugs fixes

AutoHello from SBSH Mobile Software is a freeware app that allows you to answer an incoming call simply by picking up the phone and putting it next to your ear. Save that extra tap-swipe! It doesn't use the accelerometer so the battery impact is minimal (it uses the proximity sensor). AutoHello runs in the background, and auto-starts with your phone.

Filter it all: block, forward or reply by auto-SMS. In some situations you cannot or do not want to take a call: on a noisy street, at a relaxed dinner, in a crowded office. Call & SMS Filter from Melon Mobile will do everything for you: make it possible to receive only calls or only SMS, silently block calls and automatically send an SMS auto-reply, forward selected calls and let the remaining ones go through, block callers with hidden numbers, manage blacklists, whitelists and scheduled filtering, and more. It's extremely lightweight, yet powerful enough to fully protect you!

We already recommend Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney without hesitation, but now we're even quicker to do so. In honor of Comic-Con (for some reason), Capcom has temporarily marked down the iPhone version of Phoenix Wright, along with several other iPhone and even iPad games. We suggest you take that! ... opportunity and pick up Phoenix Wright for just $2.99.
Other highlights include the iPad and iPhone versions of Resident Evil 4 for $2.99 each, Street Fighter 4 for $6.99 and Dark Void Zero for just .99. Mega Man 2 is also just .99, if you want to hate your iPhone. See the full list of discounted games after the break.
Capcom notes that Street Fighter 4, Resident Evil Degeneration, Resident Evil 4 and Phoenix Wright will go back to regular price after July 25, but offers no expiration date for the other sales.

Well, it's about time. Touted back in March as one of the pillar apps to benefit from the new multitasking API, Skype has finally been updated to iOS 4 compatibility. We're seeing crisper, more retina display-friendly graphics and, more importantly, background VoIP (not for iPhone 3G, naturally). A notification window will pop up when you're called or messaged, and you can use other apps while on the line chatting to international friends at reduced rates. Even on the lock screen, if you receive a call, sliding to unlock will take you immediately into the call. Video chat still isn't here -- a darn shame given the lack of other options now -- but now you've got even more of a reason to rack up those rollover minutes on AT&T's voice plan. Download away!
Update: Remember when Skype was talking about charging extra for calls over 3G starting this month? Straight from the horse's mouth: "we no longer have plans to charge a supplement to make calls over 3G."

Android 1.5 and 1.6 are still major players in the field, together accounting for some 41 percent of all Google-powered phones in use as of July 15 -- but for the first time, Android 2.1 is on significantly more than half of the phones out there, up from an even 50 percent in mid-June. 55.5 percent of devices are running Eclair to be exact, and Froyo also makes an appearance with a little sliver of 3.3 percent -- an anemic figure obviously hampered by the fact that no one outside Google itself (on the now nearly-defunct Nexus One) has deployed the latest version yet. It's fascinating to see the change in the version mix over time get visualized like this -- now all we need is that dark green line at the very bottom to shoot upwards and obliterate everything else on the graph. Let's make it happen, guys.

This iPad dock is a well-executed gaming accessory. [Linkreincarnate] used a Hori Wii fighting stick as the controller. In his hardware explanation he outlines several benefits of this choice including built-in support in most of the iPad emulators, as well as foregoing the need for a wired connection. Just above the controls there is a standard docking connector which holds the iPad in place and patches through the audio to some external speakers. But that’s not all that is included in the build, the final touch is a pico projector that can be used if you want a larger gaming experience. Video of the hardware and a gaming demonstration can be found after the break.
