It's been about a week since Apple rolled out its new advertising platform, and developers of iPhone apps are watching the earliest returns to see how much money they can expect to make from these ads. One developer reported Thursday that he earned $1,400 in one day for his flashlight app. The amount iAds pay is 'a high number when you get it, but you don't get it very often,' said Dave Yonamine, the director of marketing at MobilityWare. The article discusses revenue potential in relation to the only other mobile ads platform, AdMob for Android, and claims that iAd paid as much as $148 for the same number of ads as $1 on AdMob; but this extreme ratio is likely to erode as the novelty wears off."

Poor Google. Despite its numerous capabilities with smartphones spread across a variety of carriers, Android still struggles to garner the prestige and positive perceptions of iOS 4. Sales continue to rise, but at the end of the day, the average person is still left lusting for an iPhone. Well, here are 10 features that should be added to Android 3.0 that could change the tide.
1. A no-brainer task manager.
Google says Android doesn’t need a task manager, that it closes programs efficiently without any user-intervention, substandard apps often suck memory dry. Because of this, Android users are forced to download complicated task-managers, each with its own odd UI, and weigh which one works the best. Google, please fess up to the problem and put something in there a computer novice could use. Something with big buttons would be nice.

Here we go again, unfortunately. Both 9 to 5 Mac and Ars Technica are reporting a new spat of potentially-fraudulent apps climbed the iTunes charts today, now in the Travel section. This time, the culprit's purported to be Chinese-based WiiSHii and a series of "GYOYO" Chinese- and English-language maps. The two publications have a screenshot each showing the apps climbing the charts, as well as an apparent receipt from one customer who unwittingly found charges for the software on his or her bill -- and yeah, we see them, too, albeit not topping any charts as of this writing. So yet again, we advise caution and double-checking your payment history. Le sigh.

Is this the honest-to-goodness iPhone 4 jailbreak we've been waiting for, or just another userland JB? It's hard to say from here... but either way, don't expect Geohot to release it into the wild. In a mildly jaded blog post, the original iPhone hacker makes it clear that whatever he did here was for his own amusement, and judging by the title of that entry ("Meh") the whole breaking-and-entering bit isn't giving him quite the same chuckles it used to. That's a shame, but we hear the iPhone Dev Team is making progress apace, so let's leave Geohot to tackle one of his other promised hacks, mmmkay?

A new study by Resolve Market Research has found that while video game use on the iPad is prevalent, its impact on attitudes towards dedicated portable games consoles remains relatively limited.
The U.S. study compared technology owners, or people that intend to own devices, in four different categories: the iPad, smartphones (including iPhones, Androids and BlackBerrys), e-readers and portable video game consoles.
According to details of the report detailed on website Mashable 28 per cent of users said that their main use for the iPad would be playing games.
However, just 23 per cent felt that the iPad was the "most enjoyable" device for playing games - compared to 60 per cent for a dedicated portable device and 8 per cent for a smartphone.
Although this appears to be good news for video games consoles, 38 per cent of those surveyed indicated they did not plan to buy a dedicated games machine after buying an iPad.
Asked which device they would no longer consider buying after owning an iPad, 49 per cent answered with an e-reader and 38 per cent a portable games console.
However, this statistic does not make it plain what the likelihood of buying such devices was before acquiring an iPad. It also means that almost two-thirds of iPad owners are still open to purchasing a portable console.
Other data from the report indicates that for 37 per cent of iPad owners the device was their first Apple product. Also of interest is that the most common perception of the iPad was as "a very expensive toy", with 55 per cent of respondents sympathising with that description.
A total of 33 per cent thought it a "technological breakthrough", 28 per cent "a useful tool for productivity", and 25 per cent that "it will replace the need for netbooks".
The top reasons for intending to buy an iPad were "entertainment" (56 per cent), "cool factor" (42 per cent), "convenience" (40 per cent), and "brand" (28 per cent).
The top reasons for not buying an iPad were "I don't see the need for it" (54 per cent), "It's too expensive" (46 per cent), "subscription fee for 3G" (17 per cent), and "I have another device that covers the same functionality" (16 per cent).

We weren't exactly sure whether Apple was going to approve third-party video calling apps using the front camera on the iPhone 4, but good news: the answer is "yes." Fring just slid in a new version of its longstanding iPhone app today featuring support for video calling, which is pretty awesome in and of itself -- but the real news is that it works just fine over 3G, as you can see in our quick test above between Chicago and London. This opens the door for services that could have potentially broader implications than FaceTime itself, since Apple's service is limited to WiFi and currently only works between iPhone 4s. Just make sure you're wearing clothes when you call, alright?

Although there's been no shortage of iPhone DJ apps in the past few years, they've remained fairly niche, since Apple didn't allow devs official access to the iPod music library -- mobile DJs needed to upload a second separate music library per app, and that's no fun at all. Looks like that's about to change, though: one of the 1500 new APIs in iOS 4 provides direct access to the iPod library, meaning music apps of all kinds can play your tracks in any wacky way they want -- including, yes, scratching them. The first app to support the new API in the store is Flare Scratch, which is a relatively simple scratch app -- we just gave it a shot and yes, it does indeed load tracks from the iPod library and let you scratch 'em. There's a bit of a wait when loading up a new track, though, so it's not totally fluid to use in anything but a hey-this-is-fun context, but we're betting we'll see more serious DJ apps hit with smoother transitions soon enough -- and we can't wait to see what devs do once iOS 4 hits the iPad and they've got more room to work with.

Slip on your fine silk smoking jacket and light up a victory cigar US Android fans, the latest comScore numbers are out for the three-month period ending in May 2010. The most notable trend spotted was a 4 point (up from 9.0% to 13.0%) quarterly increase in Google's Android market share as all other smartphone OS subscribers declined. ComScore also saw Motorola's slide continue, slipping behind LG now for a third place US finish as Samsung continued to bolster its dominant position. Expect the numbers to be jostled a bit next quarter when Apple's iPhone 4 numbers are factored in. Just don't expect to see the Android numbers suffer, especially with the Samsung Galaxy S launching on all the major US carriers before the quarter is done.

Mobile social gaming network OpenFeint has announced plans to bring its virtual goods and community technology to the Android mobile operating system.
Due to launch "later this summer" the SDK will bring will make OpenFeint's online store and mobile payment software available to an even wider number of developers and users. The software incorporates Google Checkout and has already proven successful on Apple formats.
As a result of the new support, mobile content from publishers such as Astraware, Digital Chocolate, Glu Mobile, Hudson Soft will become available on Android devices for the first time. Along with titles from independent studios such as Distinct Dev (Moron Test), ustwo (Dot Dot Dot), Pik Pok (Flick Kick Football), RocketCat Games (Hook Champ), and TastyPlay.com (Kamikaze Race).
The expansion is being funded in part by a strategic investment from Chinese online publisher The9. The exact size of the investment though has not been revealed.
OpenFeint will continue to be open source and free to use for both developers and players, with over 28 million users and a presence in over 2,200 live games. This audience is expected to grow significantly with over 160,000 Android powered mobile devices shipping daily.
OpenFeint recently undertook a study into the mobile virtual goods market, which found that Americans spent $168 million on mobile virtual goods in 2009. Over 70 million Americans - 23 per cent of the population - were found to own some kind of smartphone.
"The explosion in mobile online gaming is a phenomenon that affects all members of the mobile ecosystem - from OS developers and OEMs to game developers and players," said Peter Relan, executive chairman of Aurora Feint.
"Online games are meant to be played with all of your friends - regardless of mobile operating system. We've decided to expand to Android with these mobile gaming giants because all smartphone owners deserve high quality, easy to find games," he added.

Big Fish has today released Big City Adventure: San Francisco; a hidden object game that claims to be the first iPhone game to integrate peer-to-peer multiplayer gameplay with voice chat. Originally designed by Jolly Bear Games as a PC download, the iPad and iPhone versions integrate Z2Live’s multiplayer and voice chat solutions to connect people over WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G and the Edge network.
“Friends can chat while playing against each other from wherever they are in the world. We’ve also developed a native app for iPad, offering an HD version with high-resolution graphics so you can see with incredible detail when zooming in on the larger screen.” said Patrick Wylie, vice president of Big Fish Games Studios.
In Big City Adventure: San Francisco, players embark on a treasure hunt through the cosmopolitan city as they search for numerous hidden objects. The game incorporates 48 rounds of treasure hunting and a further 48 rounds of mini-games, including memory challenges, jigsaw puzzles and matching objects.
Key features of the game include live multiplayer and voice chat integration, Facebook integration, replayability as well as including a majority of all iPhone features such as the ability to listen to your own music whilst playing the game.

Sure, the iPhone 4 may have a pretty great camera as far as phones go, but there's always room for improvement -- right? Continuing the great tradition of iPhones awkwardly outfitted with camera lenses, one intrepid individual has now come up with a contraption that will let you "attach" a full-size SLR lens to your iPhone 4. While complete details are a bit light, Technabob notes that the camera mount at the bottom of the rig is a Manfrotto pocket tripod -- so you at least have a place to start for building your own.

It's a bit early to confirm anything just yet, but it's starting to look like Apple might be working on a new iPod touch. The latest of evidence backing up that shocking fact are two separate rumors that cover some familiarly territory, but with a bit more weight that before. The more convincing of those are some purportedly authentic iPod touch parts that have turned up on a number of Chinese websites, which clearly show a hole on the front of the device that's presumably for a front-facing camera. That's backed up by some fresh comments from an exec at UK retailer John Lewis, who said that a major iPod touch refresh is coming in September, and that it will match many of the iPhone 4's features, including a 5-megapixel camera with HD video recording, a gyroscope and, yes, FaceTime support.

Over a third of mobile phone-owning Americans use their handset to play games, according to the Mobile Access 2010 report.
The Pew Research Center's survey claimed that 34 per cent of US phone owners are now gaming on their mobiles, up from 27 per cent last year.
In addition, some 60 per cent of younger owners use their phones as a gaming device, the report states.
The iPhone is a major contributor to mobile gaming, with Apple confirming earlier this week that it had sold 1.7 million units of its fourth-generation handset within three days.
The survey also reveals that mobile phone internet access is on the rise, with 40 per cent of the 2252 respondents using their handsets to web browse, email or instant message - a rise from 32 per cent in 2009.

We just saw Flash 10.1 ported to the iPad demonstrated in video form by Comex, and now you can get in on the action too, as long as your iPad is jailbroken. It's called Frash, and while the plugin is still pretty early and doesn't do video playback yet, you can definitely play games and other animations right now, and we're told video support is forthcoming. Okay, so let's try this out, shall we? It's not point-and-click simple, but it's not that hard, either. Full instructions after the break.

Can't find an official iPhone 4 bumper? Driving yourself mad trying to give your new smartphone white glove treatment? Fret not, as a couple of case makers have outed new iPhone 4 clothing that's meant to specifically dodge those naughty reception issues that seem to occur whenever your sweaty palm makes contact with that now infamous metal band. Element Case -- the same folks responsible for the downright lust-worthy Joule stand for iPad -- has just revealed their first iPhone 4 case, the Vapor (shown above). The company claims that its $79.95 enclosure provides an aircraft-grade, CNC'd aluminum frame lined with a shock-absorbent material, the latter of which "addresses iPhone 4 reception issues caused by direct hand to phone cradling." For now, it's up for pre-order (shipments are expected to start next week) in black / black and black / pink, with more colors to become available in the future. As for Ivyskin? It's stepping things up even further by naming its product the "iPhone 4 Reception Case." No need for subtly, we see. Hailed as the "world's thinnest polycarbonate shell" for Apple's latest iDevice, this here sleeve is the one to get if you're look to minimize added bulk and not cover up any of Cupertino's design cues. Best of all, this one retails for just $14.99 and ships with both front and back scratch-free body armors. Crazy that it has come to this, you know?

tekgoblin sends news of the latest iPhone 4 glitch being reported in user forums and elsewhere: the phone's proximity sensor seems not to be detecting nearby faces, as it is designed to do, in order to deactivate the screen during a call. The result is often unintended input.
"On the iPhone 3GS, the proximity sensor was located to the left of the earpiece speaker. But that space on iPhone 4 is now occupied by the front-facing camera, and the proximity sensor is above the earpiece. What's not clear is whether the iPhone 4 screen's misbehavior is due to the new location of the sensor, or it's because Apple tweaked the sensor's responses in [some] way."

quickOnTheUptake writes in to update the story of foul play in Apple's App Store, which we talked over yesterday. The Next Web, which broke the story, now provides evidence of rampant App Farms used for theft in the store. Here is a summary of the problems TNW has seen, which include large-scale breakins of the App Store accounts of users worldwide. Apple has responded to the initial reports, has disabled the account of the initially fingered rogue developer, and has called on those whose accounts were misused to change their password and credit card. Both TNW and Engadget, at least, believe the problems go far deeper than Apple is admitting.

It was once the global leader in the mobile phone market, but the rise of competitors such as Samsung, Apple and Google has seen Nokia’s grip on the sector reach a new low.
Research firm IDC claims that Korean tech giant Samsung has now become the leader in the ‘featurephone’ sector (basic devices that offer calls, texting and web access). In Q1 2010 Samsung sold 12.2m such devices in Western Europe, with Nokia selling just 9.1m – a year-on-year drop of 18 per cent.
Surprisingly, Nokia remains the smartphone leader in the territory with 4.9m units sold in the territory in the same period. This compares to 3m iPhones – though remember that while Nokia has a whole range of different smartphone options, Apple has just the iPhone.
In the same timeframe, RIM shifted 2.4m units and HTC 900k. Samsung’s smartphone performance leaves a little to be desired, however, with just 300k devices shifted.
However, Nokia’s future prospects in the smartphone sector look less pleasing. The latest YouGov Smartphone Mobile Internet Experience study shows a 12 per cent drop in consumers considering a Nokia the next time they upgrade their handsets.
Of current smartphone owners, 41 per cent expect their next handset to be an iPhone and only ten per cent expect it to be a Nokia. The lack of available apps and concerns about the Symbian OS were the main reasons cited.
“Where Nokia once led the market, it has drastically fallen by the wayside,” YouGov's technology and telecoms team research manager Russell Feldman stated. “Its OVI store continues to be significantly outperformed by both Apple's Apps store and Android Marketplace.
“The results of our data consistently show that the market leader is fast becoming an also ran in the smartphone market. New products, software and apps are needed soon if Nokia is to keep up with its rivals.”
There’s no sign, though, that these numbers are making Nokia reconsider its strict allegiance to the Symbian platform, however.
“I am committed, perhaps even obsessed, with getting Nokia back to being number one in high-end devices,” Nokia’s head of mobile solutions Anssi Vanjoki stated on the official Nokia blog.
“Despite rumours to the contrary, there are no plans to introduce an Android device from Nokia. Symbian is our platform of choice for Nokia smartphones. Symbian has taken a lot of criticism lately – some of it fair, some not. But what is consistently overlooked is that Symbian still accounts for more than two-fifths of the global smartphone market.”

Metaflow established itself in the old walled garden era as a workflow management specialist, offering a platform that gave content providers pain-free access to operator and D2C portals.
It still does this, but has now broadened its service to include a B2B Marketplace through which a developer can register, upload their content and wait for the royalty cheques to come in.
This channel now supports Android developers, reflecting the fact that such products are increasingly being sold outside the Android Market store.
One early participant is 3D games developer Polarbit. Its CEO, Mitri Bautista-Wiberg, said: “As an independent developer and publisher, direct and cost-efficient routes to sales channels, operators and end-users, is vital.
"By integrating Metaflow Submissions and B2B Marketplace solutions into the workflow of Fuse, our development platform, we take one step further towards making it a one-stop, fully device and channel independent handheld game development and deployment solution."
Charles McLeod, CEO of Metaflow, added: “Metaflow provides the opportunity to connect thousands of the best premium content developers into hundreds of sales channels by providing a one stop shop to develop, promote B2B discovery, distribution and delivery everywhere.”
