If you own a Pre, you like to tempt fate, and you don't faint at the mere thought of your phone melting into a nondescript heap of plastic and silicon, have we got some exciting news for you: some crazy dude with a death wish has somehow eked an honest gigahertz out of the Pre's OMAP3430 processor that normally plods along at 600MHz. Of course, this isn't the first time the phone's been overclocked, but traditionally, those overclocks have topped out around 800MHz -- so if you need serious speed and don't mind nuking your battery at a record pace, this so-called "F105 Thunderchief" kernel project is one that you're going to want to keep an eye on. The project's owner says "do not install this if you like your phone," so... you know, proceed with extreme caution, especially considering that your warranty's probably going to dry up as fast as your battery.

Nope, this isn't the first iPad mod you'll have seen, but it's likely to be the biggest crowd pleaser yet. Inspired by the iCade cabinet -- an April Fools' joke that had most of us asking where we could buy one -- this really real arcade cabinet integrates Apple's slate, hooks it up to a set of old school controls, and lets users go to town with such old timer classics as Mr. Do! It's still in prototype form, hence the boxy exterior, but the action on screen is looking as good as you'd expect.

We knew that Intel had designs on Android for its Moorestown CPU, and as you might have guessed, the company's plans don't stop there. Renee James, a Senior VP at Intel, recently said as much in a conversation with APC. Apparently, devs can look forward to seeing a fully native x86 version of Froyo at some point this summer. James goes on to say that "all of the code will be fed back into the open branch that will be created for x86." Awesome! Perhaps 2011 will see a yet another flood of generic, Atom-powered Android tablets. Because we don't see enough generic Android tablets as it is.

DJRumpy was one of several readers to point out rumors that Apple will soon be deploying an update to iOS 4 to combat the iPhone 4 antenna problems we discussed last week. This could be good news for users of the 1.7 million iPhone 4s purchased during the first three days of its release. (And no, Daily Mail, Steve didn't announce a recall, though there's speculation that this problem could be a boon for Android.) An anonymous reader notes an analysis of a teardown of the phone, which found that its parts collectively cost about $188, with the most expensive part — the LCD screen — costing $28.50 by itself. In other Apple news, Germany has demanded that the company "immediately make clear" what data it collects from customers, and what use it makes of that data (perhaps spurred by Google's Wi-Fi sniffing debacle).

Better late than never. Spotify has announced that it has submitted an updated version of its iPhone app for approval by Apple, including iOS 4 features.
Specifically, the app will use the new software's third-party multi-tasking capabilities, enabling it to play music in the background while users do other things on their devices.
iOS 4 was made available to consumers last Monday, and Spotify users have been wondering why the app couldn't multi-task since then.
In the US, music app Pandora had the feature ready for launch - unsurprising, given that the company's app was used to show off iOS 4's multi-tasking on-stage at WWDC, and before that at the iOS 4 unveiling.
For Spotify, supporting multi-tasking should boost usage of its app, while bringing it into line with the Android and Symbian versions.
"To make up for the extra little wait time we’ve added a nice little surprise to make Spotify mobile even more exciting for you," blogs the company's Andres Sehr. Users will have to wait for Apple's approval to find out what that is.

iPhone games developer Lima Sky says that its Doodle Jump game has now sold more than five million downloads on the App Store.
It's the first paid game to reach that milestone, although free titles like Tap Tap Revenge and Paper Toss have gone way beyond it.
"We are thrilled to see how much Doodle Jump means to millions of Doodle Jumpers around the globe," says president and co-founder Igor Pusenjak.

Apple has sold 1.7 million units of iPhone 4 since it was launched on June 24th, with the company claiming the launch to be the most successful in its history.
Last week Oppenheimer analyst Yair Reiner predicted Apple could have sold 1.5 million units on launch day.
The official figure comes as no surprise - the iPhone 4 pre-order process was hampered by websites falling over and other bugs in the system. In the US and UK, the initial stocks available for pre-order were sold out.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs said: “This is the most successful product launch in Apple’s history. Even so, we apologise to those customers who were turned away because we did not have enough supply.”
The latest incarnation of the iPhone comes with iOS 4, offering multitasking, folders, enhanced mail, deeper enterprise support and Apple’s new iAd mobile advertising platform.
It's not been a smooth launch by any means, however, with many customers complaining about poor signal reception when the device is held in a certain way.

Having arrived in a number of key global markets last Thursday, the first hackers to have jailbroken the iPhone 4 are already boasting online.
Jailbreaking is the term used for circumventing Apple’s software security measures. A jailbroken handset will run custom code and programmes that are not made by Apple or purchased legally over iTunes.
Most users who jailbreak their phones do so to either run illegal pirated software or programmes that are not officially sanctioned by Apple. These can include console emulators or can be feature-based. For instance, jailbroken iPhone 3G devices can be used to record video – something that Apple does not officially offer.
Now Pocket Gamer reports that the first hack is being described as “a preliminary userland”, meaning that it still relies on some of Apple’s official software and would be easily blocked were it to be released to the public.
However, it’s the first step towards a crack and don’t be surprised to see something being released online over the coming week or two.

Aaron Ardiri challenged himself to port his classic PalmOS version of Lemmings to the iPhone, Palm Pre, Mac and Windows. The porting was done using his own dev environment, which creates native C versions of the game. He liveblogged the whole thing, and finished after only 36 hours with an iPhone version and a Palm Pre version awaiting submission, and free versions for Windows and Mac available on his site.

The most Twitter-vocal iPhone Dev Team member, Mr. MuscleNerd himself, has just posted a screenshot from a jailbroken iPhone 4. Before you get too excited, however, you should know that this is just a preliminary "userland" jailbreak, which means it uses Apple software to happen, and it's not of a low enough level to really be worth releasing, since it's easy for Apple to patch. Instead it's an important step toward a real, low-level jailbreak that can actually be released. We'd feign pins and needles if this community wasn't so gosh darned amazing at hacking these phones: we're sure that real jailbreak will be along shortly.

Reports of call and data signal strength problems in the new iPhone 4 have a basis in fact, a hardware expert said Thursday. Later in the day, Apple acknowledged that holding the iPhone 4 may result in a diminished signal that could make it difficult to make and maintain calls or retain a data connection. 'Gripping any phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone,' Apple said in a statement issued to several media outlets, including PC Magazine, which had run tests earlier Thursday. 'If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.' Scores of new iPhone owners confirmed the reception problem in a string of more than 360 messages posted to a thread on Apple's iPhone 4 support forum."
A blog post from an antenna design company explains that the reception problems are probably the direct result of phone design adapting to FCC requirements.

The remote-wipe capability that Google recently invoked to remove a harmless application from some Android phones isn't the only remote control feature that the company built into its mobile OS. It turns out that Android also includes a feature that enables Google to remotely install apps on users' phones as well. Jon Oberheide, the security researcher who developed the application that Google remotely removed from Android phones, noticed during his research that the Android OS includes a feature called INSTALL_ASSET that allows Google to remotely install applications on users' phones. 'I don't know what design decision they based that on. Maybe they just figured since they had the removal mechanism, it's easy to have the install mechanism too,' Oberheide said in an interview. 'I don't know if they've used it yet.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions is heading to iPhone and iPod Touch on 15th September.
There's no price mentioned, but we're badgering Square Enix to find out.
War of the Lions was the subtitle given to the exemplary 2007 PSP remake of the original Final Fantasy Tactics game from 1997/8. Square Enix bettered its first effort in every way and went on to earn a whopping 9/10 here on Eurogamer.
Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions will gain unspecified new features for iPhone as well as the requisite touch-screen controls.

So, we just spoke with Apple and got the straight dirt on the reception issues that have been plaguing users today... and it's a little surprising. In essence, Apple cops to the fact there are reception issues with the new iPhone -- namely, that if you cover the bottom-left corner of the phone and bridge the gap between the notch there with your naked flesh, you could see some signal degradation. Yes, you read that right: it's not a software or production issue, simply a matter of the physical location of your hand in regards to the phone's antenna. The company's suggested fix? Move your hand position, or get a case which covers that part of the phone, thus breaking contact. As you can see in the email above which just arrived in our tip box, this is a sentiment which runs pretty high at the company. Here's the official statement:
Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.
We know what you're thinking, and we're thinking it too: this sounds crazy. Essentially, Apple is saying that the problem is how you hold your phone, and that the solution is to change that habit, or buy one of their cases. Admittedly, this isn't a problem that exists only for the iPhone 4 -- we've seen reports of the same behavior on previous generations (the 3G and 3GS), and there is a running thread about this problem with the Nexus One. While it is definitely true that interference is an unavoidable problem, we can't help feeling like this is really a bit of bad design. If the only answer is to move your hand, why didn't Apple just move the antenna position? What we can say without question is that in our testing of the phone, we had improved reception and fewer dropped calls than we experienced with the last generation, and we never noticed this issue. Additionally, when using a bumper we can't recreate the signal loss. So, now we have an answer... all we're wondering is whether or not the company will start handing out bumpers pro-bono to those who are experiencing problems. It certainly seems like the right thing to do.

We'd heard earlier that ngmoco's new game Eliminate: Gun Range was one of the first apps to really take advantage of the iPhone 4's gyroscope, and now that we've had a chance to play with it, we've got say there's a ton of potential here. E:GR is itself just a simple shooter, but the gyroscope adds what seems like nearly 1:1 motion control to the proceedings -- and since you're moving the display itself, it almost feels like augmented reality. It's hard to explain, since it's so unlike any mobile UI experience we've encountered before, but as soon as we tried it our brains pretty much exploded with possibilities -- we're thinking drastic improvements to actual augmented reality apps like Layar, all kinds of crazy flight simulator games, much more refined GPS apps, you name it.

Google disclosed in a blog post on Thursday that it remotely removed two applications from Android phones that ran contrary to the terms of the Android Market. From the post: 'Recently, we became aware of two free applications built by a security researcher for research purposes. These applications intentionally misrepresented their purpose in order to encourage user downloads, but they were not designed to be used maliciously, and did not have permission to access private data — or system resources beyond permission.INTERNET. As the applications were practically useless, most users uninstalled the applications shortly after downloading them. After the researcher voluntarily removed these applications from Android Market, we decided, per the Android Market Terms of Service, to exercise our remote application removal feature on the remaining installed copies to complete the cleanup.' The blog post comes a day after security vendor SMobile Systems published a report saying that 20% of Android apps provide access to sensitive information."
Update: 06/25 16:44 GMT by S : Clarified last sentence, which incorrectly suggested that 20% of Android apps were malicious. According to the report (PDF, which we discussed recently), "a majority of these applications were developed with the best of intentions and the user data will likely not be compromised.

Apple has admitted that complaints of reception problems with the new iPhone 4 are an issue, with the issue being hardware rather than software related.
The main complaint of the new device, which launched earlier in the week, is that if the bottom-left hand corner of the phone is held reception can be impaired or even lost.
Apple's advice so far is to use a cover for the phone, to prevent physical contact with your hand, or simply to hold it differently.
"Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas," suggests an official Apple statement obtained by website Engadget.
"Avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases," concludes the statement
In addition to the reception problems there have also been multiple reports of screen discoloration, although a post on the AppleInsider forums suggests this is a result of the bonding agent on the glass not fully evaporating. As such the issue is expected to resolve naturally after a period of days.

Unity Technologies has opened pre-orders for the Android version of its popular eponymous games engine - and there's an incentive for pre-orderers.
The first 500 customers who pre-order the software will receive a free Google Nexus One phone to test their creations on.
Unity Pro for Android was revealed last month at Google's I/O developer event. It features all the same features as its iPhone, iPad, PC, Mac, Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 counterparts.
“We firmly believe that the future of games lies in the web and mobile markets, and bringing Unity to Android gives our users easy access to a new and rapidly growing audience,” said Nicholas Francis, CCO of Unity Technologies.
"We're completely stoked that we managed to team up with Google so we can get a bunch of phones included with 500 pre-orders. We don’t know exactly what people will create - only that with the skills of our users, it's gonna rock.”
Unity Pro for Android features include an integrated editor, the ability to use your phone as an input device to test your game directly within the authoring tool, one-click deployment, and a highly optimised graphics pipeline for OpenGL ES 2.0.
Unity Pro for Android is an add-on license to Unity's existing Unity Pro, and is priced at at $1500 for existing Unity Pro customers and $2700 for new customers. A non-Pro version, Unity for Android, will be priced at $400 and available at a later date.

According to Liliputing, Intel is bringing the sweet eye candy of Android to x86, which — if all goes well — means it will land on (more) netbooks and tablets soon. I'm more excited about ARM-based tablets, for their current advantage in battery life, but the more the merrier, when it comes to breaking up the tight circle of OSes available for any given arbitrary class of computing devices. Given all the OS swings that the OLPC project has gone through, maybe they should be thinking of Android, too.

What's more annoying than spending hours lining up for a shiny new gadget? Learning that your precious phone can't actually connect to the network. Well, depending on how you hold it -- word has it that the iPhone 4's bottom-left corner isn't playing nice with your skin. If you recall from the keynote, that's where the Bluetooth / WiFi / GPS antenna meets its GSM / UMTS counterpart. So we decided to test on two brand new iPhone 4 handsets purchased today in the UK.
One iPhone 4 demonstrated the issue everytime it was held in our left hand (as a right-handed person is apt to do) so that our palm was essentially bridging the two antennas. You can see that in the video after the break. Bridging the two with a finger tip, however, didn't cause any issues with the reported reception. If we had to guess, we'd say that our conductive skin was acting to detune the antenna -- in fact, we've already managed to slowly kill two calls that way so it's not just an issue with the software erroneously reporting an incorrect signal strength. That said, we had no issues when Apple's $29 rubber bumper accessory (given to us free for standing in line) was attached, creating a buffer between our palm and the antennas. Our second UK-purchased iPhone 4 was fine, showing none of these handling symptoms. See the video evidence after the break including Insanely Great Mac's version which got us to worrying in the first place.
