Microsoft's upcoming smartphone re-entry was slammed by tech analyst site Infoworld following a Mobile Beat developer demo.
Infoworld editor Galen Grumen had earlier been impressed with Microsoft's upcoming Windows Phone 7 smartphone operating system. Following a hands-on with an early-beta in march Grumen said: "The new operating system uses a radically different approach to organizing information and apps ... there's a good chance that Microsoft is on to something powerful."
However following an in-depth developer demo at the Mobile Beat conference last week, Grumen reversed position and posted a no holds barred feature titled Windows Phone 7: Don't bother with this disaster in which he describes the phone operating system, expected to arrive before Christmas, as a "tepid knockoff of a 2007-era iPhone".
Downplaying earlier impressions as "lipstick", after seeing the pre-production operating system outside of controlled presentation, Gruber claimed that the UI was awkward and unsophisticated, saying: "I had the same feeling you get when you got a movie based on a great trailer, only to discover that all the good stuff was in the trailer and the rest of the movie was a mess."
"It's as if Microsoft decided in summer 2007 to copy the iPhone and has shut its developers in a bunker ever since, so they don't realize that several years have passed, that the iPhone has advanced, and that competitors such as Google Android and Palm WebOS have also pushed the needle forward," said Gruber.
Gruber didn't limit criticism to the UI but also claimed that Windows Phone 7 is based on "creakingly old technology that the main competitors have all moved past", citing lack of multitasking, no copy and paste or inter-application communication as evidence.
Describing the Zune-like UI as an oversimplification of tasks, Gruber said that tiles with three menu items requiring multiple gestures left/right to enter further settings would quickly becoming ungainly. He also claimed that a Microsoft representative said the innovative UI had not been tested by users.
The PR blow comes hot on the heels of Microsoft's failed launch and subsequent cancellation of the "Kin" mobile phone. The Kin having been created by a team Microsoft formed when it acquired mobile developer Danger.

Well, it may not come as a huge surprise considering all the steam Android's picked up over the past few years, but it's a landmark nonetheless: according to AndroLib's data, the Market now has 100,000 apps available for download. It's also interesting to note that it took just under three months to get from 50,000 to the 100,000 mark. An even more impressive number, however, is the fact that over one billion applications have been downloaded. While it's not clear if this number includes app updates or not, the number is massive either way, and they're growing pretty steeply each month. AndroLib's data also notes that over 14,000 applications became available during the month of June, and over 10,000 have appeared already in July. Hit up the source links for more stats, and a chance to see the numbers update in real time.

Gather around the campfire, children, as we tell you a story from or youth. You see, back in our day, we carried around PDAs driven by Palm's operating system (no, not that one). Primitive and bulky by modern standards, sure, but if there's one aspect we remember most fondly -- or at least most vividly -- it'd be Graffiti, the shorthand writing system for your stylus-based text entry. And guess what? You can now bring that same frustration enjoyment to Google Android. Available now via Market, the free, OS-wide keyboard alternative comes care of Access, who gained the rights to Graffiti following the Palm / Xerox settlement from way back in 2006. The future is the past as remembered by the present, or something like that -- download away.

In today's iPhone 4 press conference out in Cupertino, Apple has revealed that they've pushed 3 million phones so far since launch a little under a month ago. For the record, that's about twice the number Apple sold in the first weekend -- 1.7 million -- so the pace has clearly slowed down a bit, though that would appear to be due almost exclusively to supply constraints.
As for how many of those sold phones are staying out in the field, Jobs has revealed return rates, too: 1.7 percent, which works out to about 51,000 phones, compared to 6 percent for the 3GS. Seems like most of these returners would've been better off eBaying for a profit, eh?

If you think the proximity sensor on your iPhone 4 has been acting wacky, don't worry, turns out you're not crazy: Apple has just committed to fixing weirdness in the next software update at its press conference today. Problems have mainly revolved around the sensor failing to detect your face when you're on a call, leading to accidentally hang-ups, mutes, and so on as your ear makes contact with the screen -- not too cool. Then again, if you've been staying off your phone lately for fear of dropping a call, well... maybe you didn't notice.

Jeff Coghlan, founder and creative director of browser and mobile studio Matmi, has expressed concern that Apple will ban the Unity toolset from its iPhone and iPad platforms.
Speaking at this year's Develop conference about the merits if Unity vs Flash, he argued that Apple was right to have banned Flash as to allow it meant "the market would be flooded with crap. The App store would be destroyed." He also said that Flash had lost its way, saying that Matmi games made in Unity would take four to five times as long to create in Flash.
However, he felt it would be a mistake were the same to happen to Unity as a result of Apple's increasing trend to block all third-party tools. He claimed to have heard high-level rumours that this might happen.
"It looks like it could be banned," he said, saying a "very big company" had hinted as much to him. When asked if this company was Apple, he neither confirmed nor denied it.
"To ban all third party tools would be crazy," he said, but argued that Unity would be able to return to the platform if banned. "If there is a problem Unity have a plan b. They'll change the native language to C++."
This would involve developers creating games in Unity, then exporting to objective C code and recompiling from that, thus making it impossible for Apple to prove a game had been made with a third-party tool.
A Unity employee in the audience emphasised that "Unity are completely committed to supporting those platforms," but "we do have a fallback position where we could make sure that the code we produce conforms to Apple's terms."
Added Coghlan, "I think everything will be okay, but if Apple do do something how it will come in? We just don't know. That's the problem with Apple, they can just change things. But if they do that too much developers will switch off." He argued that Android might prove an increasingly popular alternative.
Matmi's latest project is the Unity-powered Gorillaz: Escape From Plastic Beach, for iPhone and iPad.

So you just spent $600 on an iPad. How better to show off the capabilities of your state-of-the-art gadget than with ... Space Invaders? Taito released an iPad version (for $5) of its iPhone Space Invaders app worldwide -- and thanks to common iPad naming conventions, Taito thought it was a good idea to call it Space Invaders HD.
The iPad game offers, of course, a larger-scale presentation of both the 1978 game and Space Invaders Part II, as well as some promotional flyers and other vintage artifacts. It also has a rather cool new feature: a two-player mode that flips the screen so that players sitting across from one another can take turns. It's modeled on the classic cocktail-style arcade machines, and Taito even went so far as to demonstrate the game on iPads sitting on those arcade machines at an event in Japan.

It's fairly obvious that the howls around the web for Apple to address this antenna issue has gotten underneath the skin of one Steve Jobs, and in a fashion that's very much unlike Apple (or AT&T, for that matter), the aforesaid CEO has actually handed out a bit of hard data surrounding dropped calls on the iPhone 4. According to Jobs, AT&T won't reveal the exact amount of call drops for competitive reasons, but they did manage to push out a meaningful delta. As of today, they've noticed that the "iPhone 4 drops less than one additional call per 100 than the 3GS." In other words, the iPhone 4 has actually been dropping more calls than the 3GS in the three weeks that the former has been on the market. Of course, Steve's also playing up the fact that just a fraction of a percent of all buyers have bothered to call in about their bout with dropped calls (and why would you, knowing there's no cure?), but it's still interesting to finally get some cold, hard facts on this disaster. Even if it's but a snippet.

It's become the stuff of legend over the past few weeks, but if you've been holding out for a white iPhone 4, well, today's not your lucky day -- but Apple's now saying it'll ship by the end of July. That's later than the previously announced middle of July ship date, but we're going to keep believing that when it does arrive, it'll be the answer to all of our problems.

Not much of a surprise here, but Apple has now finally revised its previous "by the end of July" iPhone 4 launch timeframe for some of the remaining international countries to a specific date: July 30th. That includes Canada, a whole host of European countries, plus Australia, New Zealand, and Hong Kong. Absent from that list, however, is South Korea, which had been among the "end of July" group, but has apparently been pushed back to an unspecified date due to a delay in receiving government approval.

In response to a question at its press conference today about whether Apple could've done anything to avoid its antenna issues with the iPhone 4, Steve took the opportunity to rip on bigger rivals, saying that making a phone so big "you can't get your hand around it" helps, but that "no one's going to buy that." We're assuming he's likely talking about the latest crop of 4-, 4.3- and 5-inch phones that include the Galaxy S series, the EVO 4G, Droid X, and Dell Streak, even going so far as to call them "Hummers" (we take it you don't ever drive a Hummer, Steve?). Though ripping on the competition is to be expected, perhaps the more interesting takeaway here is that we can't realistically expect an iPhone much bigger than the 3.5-inch display they use today -- presumably that'll all be reserved for iPad territory going forward. We personally don't mind something with a little more screen real estate -- but hey, maybe humans need to go through a few more cycles of evolutionary hand enlargement before Cupertino's willing to capitulate.

We'd argue that the "wow" factor still isn't there quite yet, but we'll admit: Symbian^4 is clearly going to be a bit of a departure from the versions that came before it. The Symbian Foundation has posted the first handful of home screen UI shots on its developer wiki recently showing redesigned widgets, app categories and search, pop-up menus, and a standard-issue numeric touchscreen keypad -- and unlike Nokia's concept videos from before, these are from a real emulator running real code. While MeeGo is still expected to dominate the high end of its range, Nokia's expecting to use Symbian^4 in at least some of its devices by early 2011 -- and knowing how these guys like to go big with global roll-outs spanning tens or hundreds of millions of devices, this is a UI you might end up getting to know extremely well within a year or two.

Everything you know about awkwardly attaching SLR lenses to iPhones is wrong. This is how you do it. What started out as a quick and less-than-perfect mod of OWLE's Bubo iPhone mount by one Jeremy Salvador (pictured above) has turned into a collaboration between production company Vid-Atlantic and OWLE itself on a more finely tuned, iPhone 4-friendly prototype that delivers some truly impressive results. Sadly, the actual iPhone 4 version of the rig won't be available for a while yet, but you can get an idea of what will be possible with it after the break.

VoIP firms Fring and Skype have gone to war over the former's iPhone app, which was updated last week to add 3G video-calling.
The app allowed people to connect with their Skype friends, but the feature was quickly disabled.
Earlier today, Fring issued a press release claiming that it was being "forced to stop its 4 years of Skype interconnectivity following threat of legal action", and that "Skype is refusing to allow Fring to restore connectivity to Skype".
The company followed up with a blog post: "Now that fring expanded capacity to support the huge demand for video calling for all users, Skype has blocked us from doing so. They are afraid of open mobile communication. Cowards."
Strong words, but Skype quickly retaliated with its own blog post, categorically refuting the claim as untrue.
"Fring was using Skype software in a way it wasn’t designed to be used – and in a way which is in breach of Skype’s API Terms of Use and End User License Agreement," blogs Skype's Robert Millar.
"We’ve been talking with Fring for some time to try to resolve this amicably. However, over time, Fring’s mis-use of our software was increasingly damaging our brand and reputation with our customers."
Millar hints that Skype did threaten legal action over this - "those developers that do not comply with our terms will be subject to legal enforcement" - but says that "there is no truth to Fring's claims that Skype has blocked it. Fring made the decision to remove Skype functionality on its own."
For now, Fring's connectivity with Skype is gone, and judging by the ill-tempered exchange, won't be returning any time soon.

Unity CEO David Helgason delivered a crisp response to a question at today's Develop conference about suggestions by Apple boss Steve Jobs that apps and games made with middleware are 'crappy'.
"He doesn't understand the economics of game development fundamentally," said Helgason, saying that pure native code development might work for apps, but not for more complex games.
Unity has been at the centre - along with Adobe - of speculation about Apple's policies on middleware tools, although for now, games created using the Unity SDK are still being approved for distribution on the App Store.
Helgason said consumers should be the arbiters of whether middleware-powered iPhone games are "crappy", and said that the fact that on any given day 10-20% of the top-selling games on the App Store use Unity proves otherwise.

Microsoft's efforts to ensure a strong start for its Windows Phone 7 OS continue, with senior director Todd Brix confirming that app developers are being offered financial incentives to support the platform.
According to Business Week, Brix confirmed that those incentives may include free tools and test handsets, but also funds for software development and marketing, with revenue guarantees if apps don't sell as well as expected.
"We are investing a lot to attract developers big and small to Windows Phone 7 to let them understand what the opportunity is and provide as many resources as we can to help them be successful on our platform," he says.
The interview confirms rumours that have been bubbling in the app developer community for some time now about Microsoft's calculated pursuit of successful iPhone developers in particular.
These developers could be forgiven for taking a wait-and-see approach to Windows Phone 7, which will launch with its first smartphones later this year.

July 17th, 2010, 22:20 Posted By: wraggster
Apple will give away a free bumper to all iPhone users effected by the antenna issues that have led to widespread dropped calls, a move the firm says will solve the problem.
While the news will no doubt come as huge relief to customers, one upshot affecting the trade is that the large number of third party iPhone case manufacturers may now find themselves with less of a market for their own products – depending on how the specifics of the offer pan out next week.
Steve Jobs made the announcement at an impromptu press conference today. Unfortunately only a select few journalists were invited to Apple's headquarters for the announcement – however the below is true according to a number of live bloggers including Mac World, Arstechnica, and the New York Times.
Apple initially did its best to play down the fracas surrounding its iPhone 4 antenna issues, by claiming the dropped reception issue affects a tiny minority of users, with 0.55 per cent of users complaining to AppleCare.
The conference started by playing a YouTube video entitled The iPhone Antenna Song – a video which essentially implied the media have overreacted.
When Steve Jobs emerged, the CEO opened with: "You know, we're not perfect. And phones aren't perfect either. But we want to make all of our users happy. And if you don't know that about Apple, you don't know Apple."
After reeling off some stats about how well the iPhone 4 has performed so early in its life cycle, Jobs went on to say that ever since they heard about the antenna issue, they have "been working our butts off to come up with real solutions."
Jobs appeared to go into remarkable detail on similar antenna issues effecting HTC and Blackberry phones – reiterating the company line that this sort of complaint is common on all mobile phones – as is evident in its leaked complaint procedures.
Admitting the firm knew about the potential problem in development, Jobs claims it was however unavoidable. "We haven't found a way around the laws of physics... yet," he, presumably, joked.
He went on to announce as of next week users would be able to pick a case from the Apple website, and it will be shipped out to them for free.
A particularly emotive Jobs finished his speech, saying: "We love our users. We really love 'em. And we try very hard to surprise and delight them. We work our asses off for them. And it's great. and we have a blast doing it.
"We do all this because we love our users. When we fall short, we try harder. We pick ourselves up, figure out what's wrong, and we try harder. And when we succeed, they reward us by staying our users, and that makes it all worth it."
Earlier this week, the problem gained the attention of the US Government, with Senator Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat, reportedly writing to Steve Jobs urging Apple to come up with a "permanent fix" to the problem at no cost to customers.

Apple has promised to send a free case to everyone who has purchased an iPhone 4, and will also bundle a case with devices sold between now and September.
The measure was announced at a press conference today, called by Apple after mounting criticism of iPhone 4's antenna issues.
Apple will also refund people who've already bought one of its official 'bumpers' for their iPhone 4, and offer a full refund to anyone who wants to bring back the handset itself.
CEO Steve Jobs apologised to users for the antenna issues, but nevertheless claimed that loss of reception when the handset is held in a certain way is not unique to iPhone 4.
Indeed, one section of the press conference was set aside for showing videos seeming to show the same problem with the BlackBerry 9700, HTC Droid Eris and the Samsung Omnia.
"iPhones aren't perfect," said Jobs. "It's a challenge for the entire industry."
He went on to say that 0.55% of iPhone 4 buyers have called Apple's technical support department to complain about reception issues, and only 1.7% of buyers have returned the handset - compared to 6% for the iPhone 3GS at this stage.
Why is Mobile Entertainment writing about this? Well, app developers have been following antennagate closely - they're judging how to allocate their resources in terms of supporting the iPhone 4's specific features, like its Retina Display and gyroscope.
With that in mind, there was another big stat in the press conference: three million iPhone 4s have been sold so far.
That's the addressable base, although it's too early to tell how antennagate - and today's announcements - will affect the sales rate in the coming months.
Those sales will be boosted by the fact that iPhone 4 is going on sale in 17 more countries on July 30th.

Oh, sure -- this has certainly been tried before, but given that things like this need a critical mass of followers to be effective, we're particularly jazzed about Google's own initiative. Dubbed 'Open Spot,' this bloody brilliant Android (2.0 and up) application enables motorists to search for unclaimed spaces that have been reported by other Open Spot users, and once they head elsewhere, it allows them to mark their spot as open and available. Once a spot is marked, the color gradually fades from red to yellow the longer it remains unclaimed. We've given it a quick test here on our end, and while it seems snappy enough (and yes, we definitely received a Karma Point for every space we dropped), the obvious omission is the ability to add notes to each marked place. There really should be a way to denote whether a spot is metered, covered by some wacky city permit law or submerged in a foot of water -- here's hoping the next update will enable comments. Hit that source link (or just open up the App Market) to grab it for free, and jump on past the break to see how your fellow city dwellers feel about this marvelous invention.
