The previous Government is facing criticism over its projects to develop iPhone applications, including a Foreign Office travel advice app and a jobseekers tool.
According to the BBC, a Freedom of Information request revealed that a number of projects undertaken with costs ranging from £10,000 to £40,000, the most expensive being an unfinished DVLA app guiding people on how to change a wheel on their car.
“It seems many Government bodies have given in to the temptation to spend money on fashionable gimmicks at a time when they are meant to be cutting back on self-indulgent wastes of money,” said the campaign director of the Tax Payers Alliance, Mark Wallace.
“It is ridiculous not only that they are commissioning these apps but that some of them are supposedly secret on grounds of national security. Someone who is faced with losing their home because of high tax bills, or whose life is being ruined by crime isn't going to get any reassurance from knowing there's an app for that.”
The news comes after the Coalition Government stated intentions to review the 820 websites currently on the books, which have cost £94 million in development and running costs and a further £32 million in staff.

We oftentimes hear raw numbers of apps bandied about in mobile OS comparisons, but we rarely get any idea of just how many developers are behind the scenes working for each platform. This is the void of knowledge filled by AppStore HQ today, who have gone to their dev directory -- claimed to be a complete listing of all 55,000+ coders whose work is currently available for consumption in the Apple App Store or Android Market -- and stacked them into neat piles of Apple, Google and Gapple programmers. It's immediately apparent that single-platform development is the norm (with Apple holding the predictable edge), but AppStore HQ also provides a list of some of the most well known (and well funded) apps doing the cross-platform dance, and suggests that a movement is afoot toward making software available for both sets of users. Then again, the BNET article below points out the difficulties faced by smaller outfits, who might struggle to find the resources required to port their content over and maintain the skills required to be multi-platform, resulting in them sticking to one environment, irrespective of what allures others might throw their way. Give them both a read, we say.

"The iPad's IPS panel is pressure-sensitive, you say?" No, that's not quite right, but with some clever software and a special capacitive stylus, the folks at Ten One Design built a convincing proof of concept anyhow. While we're not quite sure how it works, the current theory states that the soft tip of the stylus expands like a brush when you press it down, generating a "larger press" that can be detected by the hooks in Ten One's code -- which they soon plan to share as a free software library (assuming Apple allows) with developers around the world. See it in action in a video after the break, and if you're feeling your inner Rorschach today, let us know what you see in the above drawing.

Looking for something a bit more eye-catching than a iPhone 4 with a wooden veneer? Then it looks like you can once again thank Stuart Hughes for throwing any subtlety to the wind and going all out with the so-called iPhone 4 Diamond Edition. As you can see, not only does the phone pack a smattering of diamonds (including a bedazzled Apple logo), but it's a white iPhone 4 (32GB, naturally), and unlocked for good measure. Of course, there's no guarantees you'll actually get it before white iPhone 4s become commonplace, but we're pretty sure this is $20,000 well spent either way.

The newest iPhone has become the fast-selling mobile handset in history - hitting 1.7 million units worldwide in its first three days of availability, according to figures released by Apple.
This significantly outperforms the 1.1 million mustered by the last model, the 3GS, and the 107,000 iPads (although the latter saw staggered international release dates).
Research by ITProPortal also suggests (though figures have been normalised) that the handset enjoyed a more successful initial launch than the Nintendo DS, PlayStation 3 and the ubiquitous Nokia 1100.
If accurate, those figures would make the iPhone 4 arguably the most successful console launch of all time, at least if the opinion of Epic's Mark Rein that it is "the console of the future" is believed. As most iPhone owners do not use the device primarily (or at all) for gaming, its designation is a matter of some debate.
It is worth observing, however, that those platforms all went on to achieve huge long-term sales (100 million in 28 months in the case of the 1100), while the PS2 and DS both saw asynchronous Japanese and American launches.
In addition, the PS2 also had less than 1 million units available at launch and it is likely that its initial figures would have been higher had more stock been released initially - while other hardware brands tend not to enjoy the particularly passionate dedication of many Apple early-adopters, which led to long overnight queues outside many stores worldwide.
But even earlier console successes did not match the iPhone 4's launch momentum - the NES sold 500,000 in its first two months in 1983, though again that was Japan only.
Some 51 million iPhones and iPod Touches have been sold since launch. In May, Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster predicted that Apple would sell 36 million iPhones worldwide this year.
By way of contemporary comparison, 40 million Xbox 360s have been sold since its launch in 2006, according to figures released by Microsoft in April.

Epic Games VP Mark Rein has told GamesIndustry.biz that he believes the iPad will become an obvious destination for well-known, triple-A games.
Speaking in an interview at last week's GameHorizon conference, Rein explained that the march of technology meant that platforms like the iPad - which bring an increasing sense of immersion to games - change the gaming environment for good.
"It's inevitable, because once the genie's out of the bottle, it's out," he explained. "You can't un-shoot a gun, right? Once people get a taste a something higher quality, they can't go back.
"You're not watching a lot of black and white, 4:3 television at home, are you? Sure there's some nostalgia factor there, but for the most part people aren't going back and playing 20 year-old games because the technology surpasses them and now they have much better experiences that are more immersive.
"And once you have a taste of immersion, your suspension of disbelief that you had before when you had clunky 16 bit pixels on the screen, it goes away. You just don't go back and watch silent movies in black and white. I'm not saying there's no market for that, but it's not mainstream."
He also underlined the importance of marketing for anybody hoping to see commercial success, as the company's Unreal Development Kit passes 250,000 downloads.
And he agreed that there was a risk with UDK games that, like the App Store, a small number of games might download in droves, while beyond those a vast mass of titles would be seen by only a handful of people.
"Absolutely," he explained. "And that's what I was trying to address in the talk [at GameHorizon] - distribution without marketing is just distribution. You have to have marketing, you have to have a conversation with the customers."

The iPhone vs. Android wars are in full swing, but no one talks about the mobile operating system that most of the world uses: Symbian. Part of the reason, perhaps, is that the Symbian developer infrastructure is so different from the Wild West approach that Apple and Google take. Over at O'Reilly Answers, Paul Beusterien, who is the Head of Developer Tools for the Symbian Foundation, talks about why Symbian gets ignored as a platform despite the huge number of handsets it runs on. Quoting: 'Another dimension is the type of developer community. [Historically, Symbian's type of developers] were working for consulting houses or working at phone operator places or specifically doing consulting jobs for enterprise customers who wanted mobile apps. So there's a set of consulting companies around the world that have specialized in creating apps for Symbian devices. It's a different kind of dynamic than where iPhone has really been successful at attracting just the hobbyist, or the one- or two-person company, or the person who just wants to go onto the web and start developing.

Publisher EA Mobile is to bring classic 2D shooter R-Type to the iPhone. No date or price has been put on the port as of yet, but history suggests that the arrival of official shots on the company’s Facebook page indicates that the games release on the App Store should be very nearly upon us.
EA says the title will be 100 per cent true to the original. It will offer tilt, touch and virtual d-pad control options along with several difficulty tiers.
Though the genre has more or less died on home consoles other than in the enthusiast homeland of Japan, 2D shooters enjoy a strong following on iPhone.
Alongside popular outings such as Icarus-X, Assault Squadron, Space Deadbeef and Space Invaders Infinity Gene, cult developer Cave has received plenty of praise for its technically accomplished port of bullet-hell outing Espgaluda 2 earlier this year.

Take it with a grain of salt, but it's looking like some prayers have been answered on this Fourth of July -- Flash (or is that "Frash"?) is running on this man's iPad, cleverly ported from Android. The YouTube video claims that by using a compatibility layer, the Android runtime can play Flash content natively in Safari, but only on iPad so far -- iPhone 3GS support is planned soon, as is iOS 4, and there's a call for developers to move the project forward at GitHub. We've no way of determining its legitimacy at this moment, but it sure seems like Comex (he of the iPad "Spirit" jailbreak) has outdone himself this time, and hey, where there's smoke, there's fire, right? See Strongbad answer emails on iOS, right after the break.
Update: It appears Comex has indeed been working on this project for some time; a second blurry video after the break (running on iPhone) shows us what it used to look like.

We've received a handful of tips this morning claiming something's rotten in the state of the iTunes App Store, namely via the Book category. As of this writing, 42 of the top 50 books by revenue are from the seller Thuat Nguyen, whose company website ("mycompany") leads to parked site www.home.com. A vast majority of these book apps were released in April, have little to no customer ratings or reviews, appear to be in Vietnamese (despite claims in the side bar that the supported languages are English and Japanese), and may or may not be infringing on copyrighted work -- we're noticing a lot of Dragon Ball art here. To give sales a sense of scope, Twilight series conclusion Breaking Dawn is hovering only at 34 right now.
So, how did these books hit the top of the charts? The other half of this story has to do with a claimed rise in iTunes account hacking, with a number of people reporting up to hundreds of dollars being spent unwillingly from their account to these specific books. Coincidence? Let's not mince words here, something is definitely amiss, and it's not looking good. Just to be safe, might wanna check your purchase history under Apple Account information. We've reached out to Apple and will let you know as soon as we hear back.

News via http://www.zodttd.com/wp/2010/07/what-i-am-working-on/
After a long hiatus, I’m back to work on lots of iPhone & iPod Touch updates and even some iPad releases. First up are updates to allow all my current emulators to run on the iPad. They aren’t too shabby in 2x scale mode and they run amazingly well! Changes needed to be made to make this happen though. I am retooling my virtual controller code to allow for unique button images and a preview option in the skin selection to reposition each button. I also will be adding WiiMote controller support to those where it’s missing.
The first update will be psx4iphone. The psx4all code has been massively updated to allow for PSP EBOOT formatted PSX games, CDDA music, and tons of compatibility fixes. It will run much faster too.
Next up will be gpSPhone, snes4iphone, and n64iphone. After that I will check with everyone to see what should be updated in which priority.
I’m also working heavily on my Cydia community source. I’ve teamed up with CodeThemed to bring your own custom made themes right to Cydia & RockApp via their amazing web application. Try it out and hope to see your work of art on the ZodTTD repo. I’ll be talking more about CodeThemed shortly.
Thanks!

In the light of the clamor over the iPhone 4 Grip of Death, AnandTech recently reverse-engineered the signal-strength-to-bars mapping for the iPhone 4. Because Android is open source, we can determine the corresponding mapping for Android in combination with the 3GPP spec referenced in the source, allowing the signal-strength-to-bars mapping for both Android and the iPhone 4 to be plotted on the same axes. This shows that the iPhone 4 consistently reports a higher percentage signal strength (as defined by the fraction of bars lit) than Android GSM devices at the same signal strength.

Apple has issued an open letter to iPhone 4 owners in an effort to explain the reported problems with the handset's antenna design and signal reception.
The company says the cause is "both simple and surprising" - the formula it uses to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is "totally wrong". Here's the letter in full:
Dear iPhone 4 Users,
The iPhone 4 has been the most successful product launch in Apple’s history. It has been judged by reviewers around the world to be the best smartphone ever, and users have told us that they love it. So we were surprised when we read reports of reception problems, and we immediately began investigating them. Here is what we have learned.
To start with, gripping almost any mobile phone in certain ways will reduce its reception by 1 or more bars. This is true of iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, as well as many Droid, Nokia and RIM phones. But some users have reported that iPhone 4 can drop 4 or 5 bars when tightly held in a way which covers the black strip in the lower left corner of the metal band. This is a far bigger drop than normal, and as a result some have accused the iPhone 4 of having a faulty antenna design.
At the same time, we continue to read articles and receive hundreds of emails from users saying that iPhone 4 reception is better than the iPhone 3GS. They are delighted. This matches our own experience and testing. What can explain all of this?
We have discovered the cause of this dramatic drop in bars, and it is both simple and surprising.
Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong. Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength. For example, we sometimes display 4 bars when we should be displaying as few as 2 bars. Users observing a drop of several bars when they grip their iPhone in a certain way are most likely in an area with very weak signal strength, but they don’t know it because we are erroneously displaying 4 or 5 bars. Their big drop in bars is because their high bars were never real in the first place.
To fix this, we are adopting AT&T’s recently recommended formula for calculating how many bars to display for a given signal strength. The real signal strength remains the same, but the iPhone’s bars will report it far more accurately, providing users a much better indication of the reception they will get in a given area. We are also making bars 1, 2 and 3 a bit taller so they will be easier to see.
We will issue a free software update within a few weeks that incorporates the corrected formula. Since this mistake has been present since the original iPhone, this software update will also be available for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.
We have gone back to our labs and retested everything, and the results are the same— the iPhone 4’s wireless performance is the best we have ever shipped. For the vast majority of users who have not been troubled by this issue, this software update will only make your bars more accurate. For those who have had concerns, we apologise for any anxiety we may have caused.
As a reminder, if you are not fully satisfied, you can return your undamaged iPhone to any Apple Retail Store or the online Apple Store within 30 days of purchase for a full refund.
We hope you love the iPhone 4 as much as we do.

Crap of Defense is an iPhone game that declares itself to be the "worst game ever," with sloppily drawn soldiers attempting to take a castle, and the player tasked with blowing them up with armaments and upgrades. But apparently someone with the power to publish a PSP game thinks it's alright, because developer iFun4all recently sent us an email containing the above image, teasing a spitting-image PSP game called Paper Wars: Cannon Fodder.
There wasn't any further information included, but it's probably a safe guess that Crap of Defense got a port and a slightly less offensive name. There have been quite a few PSP games ported across to the iPhone, but looks like this is a case of cross-pollination the other way. We'll let you know when we hear more about what the game is like.

We'll get right to the point: the Facebook app for your iPhone / iPod touch is now drinking the iOS 4 Kool-Aid. Fast app switching, high resolution icons (better than the one seen above, since that's pre-update), Korean / Russian localizations, and... that's about it for now. Maybe background image / video uploading is on the list of to-do's, but at least it won't look quite as pixel-deficient on the home screen next to Twitter.

If you ask us, Apple should be giving away free bumpers, lollipops, and anything else it can think of to keep its otherwise loyal followers from revolting. But the Great Bitten One isn't doing any one of those things, and most of us are stuck either having to pony up $30 for the official salvation from self-inflicted signal harm or looking out to the grey markets. Entering this morose situation with a bit of ingenuity is Oliver Nelson, who alerts us to the fact that rubber wristbands of the sort your favorite cyclist wears are apparently an almost perfect fit when stretched around the 4's antennae. He advises that a 1.125-inch long by 0.125-inch wide incision (into the unstretched band) is necessary to keep the 30-pin port and speakers open, but otherwise it seems like a pretty effortless and dirt cheap way to avoid all this drama.

When the Moto Backflip launched we were a wee bit miffed that AT&T stuffed its ROM with what our esteemed Chris Ziegler referred to as "unremovable crapware." But, even more annoying was the handset being locked down to only accept apps installed via the Android Market, preventing users from the wealth of other goodies floating around these great internets. A few months on the situation is still the same for the HTC Aria and the company is responding directly to criticism with a statement that indicates it's all in your best interests:
AT&T selected Android Market as the exclusive source for applications because it forces developers to be accountable for the apps they submit. If the Android community has issues with an app, the app can be flagged and removed. This minimizes the risk of malicious apps harming customers and provides more protection to the customer's private data stored on the phone.
There, don't you feel safer now?

Apple has been accused of violation of the Federal Communications Act, three counts of products liability related to negligence, defect in design and breach of implied warranty, intentional and negligent misrepresentation, fraud by concealment, unfair business practices and more. 'The iPhone 4 manifests design and manufacturing defects that were known to Defendants before it was released which were not disclosed to consumers, namely, a connection problem caused by the iPhone 4's antenna configuration that makes it difficult or impossible to maintain a connection to AT&T's network,' the California complaint reads.

A serious design flaw or a big ball of nothing – however you view the Apple iPhone 4 antenna crisis, the good news for retailers is that rubber bands are suddenly in serious demand.
While the true extent of the iPhone 4’s reception issues are still yet to be fully explored, what we can be certain of is that using one of Apple’s £25 ‘bumper’ cases significantly lessens the issue of dropped reception when the phone is in a user’s hands.
Such is the demand for Apple’s case – which can only be purchased direct from the platform holder – that all colours aside from black currently have a three-week delay if ordered online.
So it’s no surprise to see other firms quickly moving to get their own ‘bumper’ designs onto the market.
The likes of Gear4 and Griffin had a range of iPhone 4 cases in O2 and Carphone Warehouse stores for the launch of the device last week, but the first alternative ‘bumpers’ to those offered by Apple are already being listed by some retailers.
Orange has placeholder listings for the Gear4 ‘Band’, though no release date has yet been announced. Higher-end solutions are now also being marketed. ElementCase is taking pre-orders on the Vapor4 – a laser engraved aluminium bumper with an inner ‘non-conductive’ lining. Prices start at $79.95.
Sellers are also quickly flooding eBay with a range of cheap bumper alternatives which can be had alongside the official options – if you’re willing to pay a premium price.
