We've been intrigued by the Square Payment System since it first ditched its Squirrel costume back in 2009, and now it appears we're on the eve (or eve of the eve, or pretty close anyway) to its release for not only the iPhone, but for the iPad and for Android as well. The software is said to be hitting App Stores and Markets this week, working with a sugar cube-sized card reader that pops into the 3.5mm headphone jack, a device that the company is giving away for free to those who sign up. Using it will not be free, with retailers paying fees starting at 2.75 percent plus a 15 cent surcharge, but that's considerably cheaper than many other options out there (which often require costly hardware to boot). There's another new video after the break, and we can't wait for these things to start showing up at the farmer's market. No more early morning ATM runs!

iStream is an application which consist of a client and a server and should allow converting and streaming of videos (3gp, avi, xvid, divx, flv, mkv, mod, mov, mp4, mpg, wmv) directly from your android mobile device, either via wifi or 3G. It's currently in development, but already usable. The free version of the application should be able to stream your previously converted movies, while the paid one has the option to convert them directly from your device, and stream them (almost) on the fly.
This application has been developped for converting movies from the android iStream client application (running on your android device) then streaming them from the server when they are finally converted (which can take some time depending on the server cpu speed), and should work fine. The "stream on the fly" option has been added later, and could be more bugged, while it seems to work fine here (with a fast server running the iStreamServer application, and a good 3G/WiFi connection).

David Hockney's digital painting experimentation has been extended to Apple's iPad.
Talking to the London Evening Standard the artist said he has been creating pictures by 'painting' directly onto the iPad's touchscreen, an act that he says could herald a return for traditional drawing techniques.
Last year it emerged that the 72 year-old Hockney - famous for his work as part of the 1960s pop art movement - was using his iPhone to create and distribute digital artwork.
But its seems stills aren't his only interest - Hockney has also been using the iPad to watch his own films and playback recordings of the paintings as they were created on-screen.

iPhone developer Tapulous has unveiled the latest instalment in its Tap Tap Revenge music game franchise: Nirvana Revenge.
Yes, the cult British psychedelic band from the 1960s are being celebrated in a... Oh, okay, they're not. It's the other Nirvana, the grunge chaps.
Nirvana Revenge will feature 13 of the band's songs, including Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come As You Are and Heart Shaped Box. Sadly no Territorial Pissings, but there are several live tracks from the band's 1992 Reading Festival set.
There's a Bluetooth multiplayer battle mode, and it's the first Revenge game to include "narrative vignettes" for each track, offering snippets about the band and their music.
The app will be available on Wednesday, and will cost $4.99 on the App Store. Nirvana join Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and Coldplay (among others) in Tapulous' stable. Now THAT'S a supergroup.
Those 13 tracks in full:

"We're number two" might not be the chant everyone's after, but we have a feeling that Google is more than satisfied with that in this case... for now. According to market research firm NPD, Google's Android operating system edged up into second place in the US smartphone market during the first quarter of the year, leaving it still well behind RIM's BlackBerry OS, but marking the first time that it has moved ahead of Apple's iPhone OS. Specifically, NPD found that RIM maintained a strong 36 percent market share for the quarter, with Android coming in at 28 percent, and iPhone OS in third at 21 percent. The growth for Android was attributed largely to strong carrier support -- like Verizon's buy-one-get-one free offer which, incidentally, also helped Verizon maintain a 30 percent smartphone market share, which is just slightly behind AT&T at 32 percent, and ahead of T-Mobile and Sprint at 17 and 15 percent, respectively.

Devices powered by Google's Android OS accounted for 28 per cent of US smartphone sales in 1Q10, eclipsing Apple to take the number-two position behind RIM (36 per cent), according to market tracker NPD.
The figures, garnered from online consumer surveys (and excluding corporate/enterprise sales), place Apple's OSX (i.e. iPhone) in third place on 21 per cent.
NPD says Android's share has been boosted by increased operator support, particularly from Verizon Wireless, which has been pushing Motorola's Droid and Droid Eris devices.
Devices sold through AT&T comprised nearly a third of the US smartphone market during the quarter (32 per cent), followed by Verizon Wireless (30 per cent), T-Mobile (17 per cent) and Sprint (15 per cent).

The release of the iPad has impacted sales of a range of mobile devices in the US, most heavily the netbook segment, according to data from Morgan Stanley Research.
According to the findings, the netbook segment has fallen from a growth rate of 641 per cent in July 2009, to just five per cent in April this year – the month that the iPad was released.
However, the interpretation of these results has found some controversy, with the Windows Supersite Blog citing IDC results that suggest that the netbook segment slowdown was “as a result of stronger-than-expected sales of larger, full-featured (and more expensive) Windows 7 notebooks.”
“IDC is now forecasting that ‘mininotebooks’ will sell 45.6 million units in 2011 and 60.3 million in 2013,” wrote Windows Supersite’s Paul Thurrott.
“If I remember the numbers from 2009, they were 10 percent of all PCs, or about 30 million units. Explain again how the iPad will beat that. Please. Even the craziest iPad sales predictions are a small percentage of that.”

Apple may have a rival for Flash in the pipeline, after it has been revealed that the company is already using its Gianduia framework for a number of web applications.
According to AppleInsider, the software, which was unveiled last year, has been used to create web app clients, Apple’s One-to-One program, the iPhone reservation system and the Concierge service for Genius Bar reservations.
These utilisations demonstrate that the Gianduia framework does not require HTML5 for implementation and can work alongside existing web standards.
It has been speculated that Apple may push Giandula, under the pretext that it is tested and ready, whereas HTML5 isnt.

The pun is so obvious it practically insults your intelligence, but we just can't help ourselves -- the iPad has just gotten a little more magical. Using the BTstack application that brought Bluetooth mouse support to iPhone, enterprising individuals discovered the same technique works on a jailbroken iPad as well, and hooked up Apple's own Magic Mouse to show it off to the world. Mind you, while this implementation does look quite useful, we do detect the barest hint of lag -- so it may not be your weapon of choice for pixel-doubled Doom sessions.

This is thinking outside the box ... or head. Dr. Matthew Bromwich of the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario has written an iPhone app to help doctors with the Epley maneuver to cure some forms of vertigo. The patient places the iPhone against his or her forehead and the app leads the doctor through the maneuver. Bromwich's first attempt at the app sounded even more fun. With that version, the iPhone hung from the front of a baseball cap the patient wore, and the patient tried to keep a ball centered in a twisting tube by moving their head. Winning the game meant the maneuver had been successfully completed and the vertigo cured.

Paul Thurrott, the prolific technology analyst and Windows expert, reacts strongly to an article highlighted on Slashdot. Thurrott takes numbers from IDC and the Wall Street Journal, indicating that netbook sales have not in any meaningful way been affected by sales of Apple's tablet computer, the iPad. Money quote: '[N]etbooks and sub-12-inch machines will sell 45.6 million units in 2011 and 60.3 million in 2013. If I remember the numbers from 2009, they were 10 percent of all PCs, or about 30 million units. Explain again how the iPad will beat that. Please. The world's biggest mobile phone maker, Nokia, has filed a lawsuit against Apple claiming the iPad 3G and iPhone infringe five of its patents.
Nokia claims the infringements involve technology used to enhance speech and data transmission and antenna innovations for compact devices.
This is the latest salvo in a long-running legal battle between the two companies.
Nokia and Apple are embroiled in another dispute concerning the iPhone.
"We've taken this step to protect the results of our pioneering development and to put an end to continued unlawful use of Nokia's innovation," said Paul Melin, general manager of patent licensing at Nokia.
In a statement, the company said that during the past two decades Nokia has invested about $51bn (£34bn) in research and development and has rounded up 11,000 patents.
Last year Nokia filed a similar lawsuit which claimed that various Apple products infringed Nokia patents. Apple responded with a countersuit against Nokia for infringing Apple patents with its smartphones.
Meanwhile, Apple is also involved in another legal row with Taiwan's HTC, maker of Google's Nexus One phone, which it says has infringed patented technology.
Patent disputes are common in the technology industry and often end with some kind of licensing agreement, correspondents say.
The Nokia lawsuit came on the day Apple announced that its iPad tablet computer will go on sale in nine countries outside the US on 28 May.

To say that Apple's iPad has driven the tablet market straight into an era of revival would be understating things greatly, and one million units later, we're here to ask the earliest of adopters how they'd tweak things if they were ever lucky enough to take over where Jonathan Ive left off. We already know that select changes are coming in iPhone OS 4.0, and the recent Spirit jailbreak has also opened up a whole new world of possibilities, but there's always work to be done, right? Would you have included a USB port and SD card slot along the edges? Designed it for use on other carriers? Made the screen a bit bigger / smaller? Thrown in a front-facing camera? Go on, spill your deepest, darkest wishes for Apple's first tablet in comments below. Someone will listen, we promise.

The new device will now hit British shops on Friday 28th May. It will launch in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain and Switzerland on the same day.
Apple's online store will begin taking pre-orders on Monday 10th May. The 16GB iPad will carry a suggested retail price of £429, while the 32GB version will cost £499 and the 64GB is £599. The 3G-enabled models will be priced at £529 for 16GB, £599 for 32GB and £699 for 64GB.
The European launch of the iPad was previously delayed due to huge demand in the US, where more than 1 million iPads have already been sold.

Looks like that iPad Camera Connection Kit isn't as overpriced as we thought; not only does it have USB headset and keyboard support, but one enterprising user has hooked up an external hard drive using the dongle as well. Max Shay has an exhaustive walkthrough at his personal website, but the gist of the matter is that you'll need a jailbroken iPad, a split-USB cable to give that drive some extra juice, and a terminal of some sort (Max used his MacBook) to trick the iPad into mounting your external storage, after you use SSH to tunnel through. The result is an unwieldy wired assembly we wouldn't be caught dead with in public, but perhaps useful in a pinch -- or as the latest proof of what the iPad could do if only Apple would let it.

You'll recall, studious little gremlins that you are, that we recently saw the venerable first-gen iPhone prancing about with an unusual little green droid providing it with operational commands. Well, the coder behind that project, David Wang, has now stepped his game up to the iPhone 3G, which has been outfitted with an almost complete implementation of Android. Audio support is the last missing piece of the puzzle, but the groundwork has been laid and it too should be ready for some unholy Apple plus Google action within the next few days. Downloadable binaries are currently being prepared

Nokia has filed a complaint against Apple with the Federal District Court in the Western District of Wisconsin, alleging that iPhone and iPad 3G products infringe five of its patents.
In a short statement Nokia said the patents relate to 'technologies for enhanced speech and data transmission, using positioning data in applications and innovations in antenna configurations that improve performance and save space, allowing smaller and more compact devices.
'These patented innovations are important to Nokia's success as they allow improved product performance and design.'
Nokia's decision to sue Apple ups the stakes even further is a smartphone war that already this year has seen Apple sue HTC for infringing on 20 patents related to iPhone's 'user interface, underlying architecture and hardware'.
The fact that Nokia's action includes the iPad is hugely significant.
Paul Melin, General Manager, Patent Licensing at Nokia, said: "Nokia has been the leading developer of many key technologies in mobile devices. We have taken this step to protect the results of our pioneering development and to put an end to continued unlawful use of Nokia's innovation."
The statement added that Nokia has invested €40 billion in R&D over the last 20 years and owns over 11,000 patent families.
