The average iPhone app has sold 101,024 copies over a lifetime of 261 days, according to new research published by former AppVee boss Alex Ahlund.
The company surveyed 96 iPhone developers, big and small, about their apps' sales performance.
The average app sells 387 copies a day, and the average price is $5.49. If that seems a bit high, be warned that Ahlund's research included one $49.99 app, which skewed the price.
The average app costs $6,453 to develop, and gets 3.89 updates.
However, Ahlund also warns that when you remove the top 10% of apps from his figures, you get an average sales figure of 11,625, with 23% of apps selling less than 1,000 downloads.
And the key to success? "Developers can either find a niche and get extremely lucky, or produce a fantastic product with high production values," writes Ahlund. "In the end, the latter is the safer route to success."

App industry expert Alex Ahlund broke-down the iPhone app sales market to determine the ins and outs of succeeding in an increasingly competitive arena
Alex Ahlund, former CEO of AppVee and current adviser to Appolicious, has published a detailed breakdown of recent iPhone app sales on startup profiler site TechCrunch.
The survey utalises detailed financial information from 96 developers, with Ahlund looking at the success rates of market applications from major studios and single-person authors “ranging in price from 99 cents to $79.99.”
“This mining of data was intended to cover the entire iPhone app industry as a whole, without allowing outliers to skew the data too much in one direction,” Ahlund said.
On the general cost/sales results, Ahlund found that:
“The average total number of units sold [per App] was 101,024 within an average period of 261 days. The average number of units sold per day was 387.”
“The average price was $5.49, although the data skews due to the $49.99 outlier. In most cases, the price point was $0.99. The average number of updates released was 3.89, with the average total development cost amounting to $6,453,” he added.
Ahlund qualified these results by noting that “several developers omitted development costs and most did not include their personal time in these figures.”
“It is safe to assume the cost would be at least five or ten times more when using a contracted team,” he said.
“But on average here, iPhone developers are seeing a return of more than 15 times their initial, albeit small, development costs.”
Ahlund went on to note that when the top 10 per cent of the most successful apps were removed from the data, the numbers skewed much lower.
“In this scenario, the average sales were 11,625 total units, averaging 44 copies/day. Approximately 23% of apps sold less than 1000 units from launch,” he noted.
“56% of apps sold less than or equal to 10,000 units, while 90% sold less than 100,000 units, with the remaining 10% achieving sales of 127,000 – 3,000,000 units.”
Other interesting discoveries included finding out that application updates do far less to boost sales than previously thought.
“Some developers reported that updating the app gave only a small—and brief—spike in downloads,” Ahlund said.
“What did seem to have a larger impact on sales was a drop in price, although this also tended to taper off quickly.”
Having an app featured by Apple was discvered to be a much greater sales-boosting event for studios.
“The level of Apple promotion reflected what sort of increase the developer would see. Areas such as ‘New and Noteworthy’ produced slightly less gains than ‘Staff Favorites’ or ‘What’s Hot’,” Ahlund said.
“Generally, it is safe to assume a 2-20X sales spike following being featured, with the effect lasting roughly a week before returning to average numbers.”
Ahlund went on to breakdown the most ‘traditionally’ succesful marketing techniques, with an emphasis on social networking sites seeming the surest route for developers to take.

Earlier this month, General Motors hinted at a partnership with a major tech company to fully overhaul their telematics system, OnStar. While OnStar CEO Chris Preuss was tight-lipped about who that partner was, Motor Trend has recently reported that it's Google. If the rumor's true, GM will make the Chevy Volt the first Android-based vehicle to hit the road. The Motor Trend article suggests 'Google would sell its Android operating system for in-car use,' while the Wall Street Journal has a slightly different take: 'The pairing would likely involve a way for users of Android-based smartphones to use OnStar features from their phone while not in their car ... For instance, a person could find out information about their vehicle's maintenance needs through the Android phone. In the case of the Volt, GM's coming electric car, an owner may be able to keep track of the car's battery charge without being in the car.'"

Crash McBang sends in a CNN report on electronics and sleeplessness and asks, "So, what do Slashdotters do to get a good night's rest?"
"More than ever, consumer electronics — particularly laptops, smartphones and Apple's new iPad — are shining bright light into our eyes until just moments before we doze off. Now there's growing concern that these glowing gadgets may actually fool our brains into thinking it's daytime. Exposure can disturb sleep patterns and exacerbate insomnia, some sleep researchers said in interviews. ... Unlike paper books or e-book readers like the Amazon Kindle, which does not emit its own light, the iPad's screen shines light directly into the reader's eyes from a relatively close distance. That makes the iPad and laptops more likely to disrupt sleep patterns than, say, a television sitting across the bedroom or a lamp that illuminates a paper book, both of which shoot far less light straight into the eye, researchers said."

Dave Knott notes that Google has announced it will close its online cell phone store and no longer sell the Nexus One smart phone directly to consumers. "While the global adoption of the Android platform has exceeded our expectations, the web store has not," wrote Andy Rubin, a Google VP of Engineering, on the official company blog. "It's remained a niche channel for early adopters, but it's clear that many customers like a hands-on experience before buying a phone, and they also want a wide range of service plans to chose from." From the Globe and Mail article:
"At least one aspect of Google's attempt to disrupt the world of mobile communications — selling phones directly to customers — has failed. ... [T]he decision to design and sell the Nexus One was perhaps more potentially disruptive for carriers. ... Google plans to continue marketing the Nexus One through 'existing retail channels, essentially partnering with carriers around the world. The Nexus One web store, meanwhile, will essentially become a marketing portal 'to showcase a variety of Android phones available globally.'"

Just a day before the Pre Plus launches on AT&T, current Palm owners are experiencing all kinds of problems related to the App Store and their Palm Profiles. Reports indicate the problems started last night, since then users haven't been able to download new apps or update existing ones from the catalog, while those unlucky enough to have tried a reset have had trouble signing back into their Palm profile in the cloud, and have lost some information like call logs and had to resync their various accounts in webOS. The Palm Developer Website is also down, tossing a "back in a few hours" sign in the window and going out for a few afternoon mimosas. For now, PreCentral posters recommend taking the device off of network time and resetting it to any day prior to today which will allow apps to install and update without issue. A post on the official Palm blog indicates things should be back to normal "soon" so AT&T customers can hopefully avoid any date/time trickery just to get their Foursquare checkins going.

The same judge who issued the warrant to search Gizmodo editor Jason Chen's apartment has now ordered it unsealed, ruling against the San Mateo County district attorney's office which had argued that unsealing the documents may compromise the investigation."
You can read the entire affidavit here (PDF). It has a detailed description of the police investigation that led to the seizure of Chen's computers. It turns out Steve Jobs personally requested that the phone be returned, prompting Gizmodo's Brian Lam to try negotiating for a public acknowledgment that the phone was real. Apple was tipped off to the man who found/stole the prototype by his roommate.

Google has announced that it's abandoning its attempt to sell Android handsets direct to consumers from its own webstore.
The company launched the site to sell its Nexus One handset early this year. The idea was that people would buy the phone and then choose an operator price plan.
Well, it didn't work out so well. Sales of the Nexus One have been slow, and in Europe it's now being sold through Vodafone in the traditional way.
In fairness, Google's VP of engineering Andy Rubin hasn't danced around the subject in his blog post announcing the webstore's closure:
"As with every innovation, some parts worked better than others. While the global adoption of the Android platform has exceeded our expectations, the web store has not. It’s remained a niche channel for early adopters, but it’s clear that many customers like a hands-on experience before buying a phone, and they also want a wide range of service plans to chose from."
For now, Google will continue to sign carrier deals for the Nexus One, which will be sold in (real-world) stores. Meanwhile, the Google.com/phone site will become a showcase for Android phones.
"Innovation requires constant iteration," writes Rubin. We believe that the changes we're announcing today will help get more phones to more people quicker, which is good for the entire Android ecosystem: users, partners and also Google."

[Aaron Nelson] tipped us off about a simple hack to use an iPad SIM with an iPhone. You won’t be able to use the iPhone as a phone, but the relatively cheap $29.99 for unlimited Internet was his goal. He used an old plastic gift card to cut out an adapter for the iPad’s micro SIM so that it will fit into the iPhone’s SIM cradle as seen above. From there he used a web service via the WiFi connection to enter “Broadband” as a custom APN.

Konami has announced a Castlevania puzzle game for iPhone and iPod Touch. There's no mention of iPad.
The game, named Castlevania Puzzle: Encore of the Night, will be "available soon", with pricing still to be announced.
Like genre-starter Puzzle Quest, Encore of the Night marries RPG with puzzle game underbelly. Here the puzzle emulates Dr. Mario, and requires gem colours to be matched in lines. These gems drop in pairs and may need rearranging before they settle.
While doing this, Castlevania characters duke it out centre screen. Heroes can be upgraded with new items as the story unfolds.

If we've learned anything from the long gestation of the SlingPlayer iPhone app, it's that folks want to stream video to their iPhone, iPad, and / or iPod touch. At least the folks at Hauppauge think so -- and the new version (v7.2) of WinTV for the WinTV -HVR tuner board for the PC now includes that functionality. Indeed, the software will even stream 16 and Pregnant (or whatever it is you're into these days) to your Mac computer. Sadly, all of this streaming is going down via WiFi, but who knows? Maybe you really want to record TV on one machine and then watch it five feet away. It will be available directly from Hauppauge for $9.95, although the company is making a free upgrade available to current owners of WinTV-HVRs. PR after the break.

kriston writes in about a new development with the Cherrypal mini laptop, which we discussed last December.
"The Cherrypal Asia laptop is now shipping with Google Android installed (product page). This replaces the older Cherrypal Asia mini laptops that were running either Windows CE or a custom Linux. The $148 version has a 1024x600 screen while the sub-$100 model runs 800x480. Both laptops run the ARM9-based VIA 8505 SoIC platform at 533 MHz with 256 megabytes of RAM and 2 gigabytes of NAND flash. I'm looking forward to seeing how Android can squeeze more throughput out of the VIA 8505, since Windows CE didn't do such a great job on the original Cherrypal Asia."

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that video game industry revenue fell by 26 percent in April, adding more concerns about the health of the industry in the worst year-over-year decline since July 2009. But the big news is that the decline in portable sales makes up 61 percent of the overall monthly decline, suggesting that the Nintendo DS platform is losing steam but also reflecting the growing clout of the iPhone platform as the iPhone and iPod Touch continue to draw in more casual gamers, the iPad offers a bigger screen experience, and Apple announces the 'Game Center' — a social gaming hub with console-like online gaming features. Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata is understood to have told his senior executives recently to regard the battle with Sony as a victory already won and to treat Apple, and its iPhone and iPad devices, as the 'enemy of the future.' 'If Nintendo's future mobile platforms are to be any kind of success, the company will have to figure out how to take on the ease of use afforded by the App Store,' writes Nicholas Deleon. A large part of Nintendo's faith in reviving its efforts hinge on the 3DS, which may ship in the fall, the first truly major handheld introduction for Nintendo since the original DS in 2004. He adds, 'Maybe Nintendo should just release a phone?'

[Pikipirs] developed an app that lets you connect a Wii remote to an Android phone. After the break you can see it used with a Sega emulator. The button presses seem very responsive, making for a nice gaming addition if you care to carry around the Wiimote in addition to your phone. It certainly seems to work better than the Wii remote + iPhone hacks we’ve seen. Pick it up from the Android store or download the APK from the thread linked at the top. This is an alpha version so don’t be shocked if it’s buggy.

The Boy's are at it feuding again today
Adobe launched an advertising campaign Thursday that takes an unexpected tack in its ongoing feud with Apple: proclaiming, in huge letters, Adobe’s love for the computer giant.
Make no mistake, though, it’s not a make-nice ad campaign by Adobe. In the ads, which are running in traditional newspapers and major news and technology sites online, Adobe also says it loves Flash — the Adobe software at the heart of the dispute with Apple. And Adobe makes it clear that it is unhappy with Apple’s decision to limit the software that can run on its iPhone system, which Adobe alludes to as “anybody taking away your freedom to choose what you create, how you create it, and what you experience on the web.”
The ads are accompanied by a site that touts choice and openness in technology and by an essay from Adobe’s founders, Chuck Geschke and John Warnock in which they say they “believe open markets are in the best interest of developers, content owners, and consumers.”
The ads themselves don’t make it immediately clear, though, what Adobe is hoping to get out of the campaign. At this point, it seems unlikely that Apple will change its policies unless it is forced to. The Journal has reported that the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice are considering an investigation of Apple’s contract with developers, in which it prevents them from using the sort of software that would allow them to build their products in Flash and have that converted to run on the iPhone operating system. Apple’s argument is that such middleman software makes for a poorer experience for users.
In addition Microsoft has said that although it is supportive of Flash, there are problems with the software, which is currently responsible for running most video on the Web. As the Web transitions to a new coding standard called HTML5, there may eventually be less need for Flash to run videos.
But Adobe says the campaign is targeted not at Apple but at Adobe’s customers, employees and partners, including software developers, ad firms and media companies, which are heavy users of Adobe’s creative software.
“The intent of the campaign is to give us an opportunity to formally state our position,” said Ann Lewnes, Adobe’s senior vice president of global marketing, in an interview with Digits. Adobe employees have made statements about the issue, but the company has not put together a formal effort to counter claims begin made by Apple, and Ms. Lewnes said employees and customers have been asking for such an effort.
Adobe, she said, wants “people to really pause and think about whether they’re comfortable having one company control the overall Web.”
Whether Apple could control the overall Web is up for debate. The current argument involves its iPhone operating system, and the company has only about 25% of the overall market based on handset operating systems, according to comScore. Ms. Lewnes said Adobe is “confident in the competition” in the mobile area but wants to address Apple’s actions in part because Apple “has great products and they’re first into market.” Even if customers have increasing choices in smart phones “we still don’t believe that restrictions should be imposed on creativity,” she said.
She added that the campaign, which will be expanding, also calls attention to the benefits of Flash specifically. Adobe has a number of other programs available, but the ads are mentioning Flash specifically because so much attention has been focused on that software. Ms. Lewnes said more than 3.5 million developers are using Flash and that this number was up 59% in 2009.
On the Adobe site, a page is devoted to countering claims made about Flash itself. In particular, Adobe emphasizes that Flash “has full support for working on touch-based devices” and that, according to tech security firm Symantec, Flash “had the second fewest number of vulnerabilities of all Internet technologies listed” in 2009.
UPDATE: Apple says it believes “in open Web standards too.” But “Flash is not an open Web standard like HTML,” said Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris. “It is a proprietary Adobe product. Just ask the W3 consortium that controls Web standards. They have chosen HTML5 as the open web standard to move forward with.”

I decided to make one more release for the 5th edition since the Qt + SwEvent is only working on Nokia’s phones. I’ll be using Qt from now on, and I recommend all Nokia users to take the Qt version, not this one.
Thanks for Saiyaku for the new D-pad graphics.
What’s new
Improved compatibility? (the code is much better aligned with drPocketSnes)
In this update the d-pad is now optimized for resistive screen, and the red/green/menu buttons can be mapped as buttons in the key config digalog.
The Big D-Pad
know issues:
Audio isn’t working
It’s final realease without Qt

We'd been wondering how and when HTC would respond to Apple's patent lawsuit, and here we go: the Taiwanese phone manufacturer just filed a complaint with the International Trade Commission, asking for importation and sales of the iPhone, iPad, and iPod be halted due to alleged infringement of five patents. ITC complaints like this are pretty familiar territory -- you'll recall that Nokia and Apple have both asked for similar bans in their lawsuit against each other -- but the interesting wrinkle here is that HTC apparently hasn't filed a corresponding federal lawsuit. We'll see if that's the next step for HTC down the line -- for now, we're digging into what patents are involved in the ITC complaint, so stay tuned.
