We still don't have a firm date for when Palm's current wunderphone will be hitting AT&T's soothingly-colored retail establishments (the site still says "coming soon"), but we do now have confirmation that at least one handset has reached its destination. A tipster was kind enough to send us these photos of an AT&T Pre Plus escaping its creamsicle confines and powering on for the first time. This doesn't look like a retail unit, likely one of AT&T's "practice" Pre Plus models that were supposed to ship earlier this month or some other promo phone, but regardless we're guessing that we're not far from yet another group of subscribers being able to massage the keys on this slider.

We have more details on that impending Eee Pad for y'inz. Interested? Of course you are! Speaking at a conference in Taiwan, Asustek Computer chairman Jerry Shen recently announced that the device will get its official introduction at Computex 2010, the first week of June. With any luck, the thing will hit retail channels the third quarter of this year -- possibly as early as July, a DigiTimes' source reports. Shen said that the device is meant to be all the things that the iPad is not: expect Google Android, USB, an integrated webcam, and Flash, for starters. The aforementioned source went on to state that, after wireless provider subsidies are taken into effect, the thing should cost around $15,000-16,000 TD (or about $480-510).

What are we to make of the iPhone leak this week? To reference Donald Rumsfeld "There are known unkowns. That is to say, there are things we know we don't know. But, there are also unknown unknowns. These are things we don't know we know."
And what I know is that this leak has all the makings of a massive conspiracy. Oh yes.
I'll use another quote here, this time from All The President's Men: "The list of the people involved is longer than anyone can imagine. It involves the entire U.S. Intelligence Community. FBI... CIA... Justice... it's incredible."
Just to refresh your memories, Apple engineer Gray Powell left his prototype iPhone 4 on a barstool earlier this week, and it eventually got into the hands of tech blog Gizmodo.
Reports suggest Gizmodo paid $5,000 for this 'stolen' bit of kit, which strains the ethics a bit. And it explains why the blog kept referring to Powell's innocent mistake in losing his phone 'just like Steve Jobs or Jonathan Ive".
This translates as 'please don't sack him, because that would make us feel really bad."
Sack him? I think it's more likely he'll be killed. Perhaps by stoning. Using Apple's old stash of Motorola ROKRs.
(By the way, if you find an interesting mobile prototype in a bar, send it to me and I'll make sure it's 'returned' to its owner. Don't for God's sake send it to Stuart Dredge. He's well known to the police)
Anyhow, within hours, the inevitable conspiracy theories began. There were whispers that Apple planted the device itself to start the hype for the real launch in June. That's been discussed liberally. But let's look at some of the other possibilities.
Microsoft
Could the Redmond giant be behind this? The device is exquisitely conceived and beautiful to look at - all the hallmarks of Microsoft at work.
Google
Jobs and Schmidt were recently pictured having coffee together, Maybe they were cooking this up. They are evil, after all.
Nokia
How to distract attention from poor financials? Mmm, focus it on your best competitor. OK, maybe not Nokia.
Al Qaeda
Terrorist cells? Cellphone? Eh? Eh?
JK Rowling
Could the iPhone 4 be a portkey? This is one of Rowling's creations – an object that once touched transports the owner to another destination. Is it possible that a Gizmodo hack will press a certain keypad combination and be whisked to an ancient graveyard where Jobs and other Death Eaters will be waiting to feast on his flesh? It's possible.
It's more than I can take. if someone gets hold of a next gen LG Pop I think I'll expire.

iPhone developer Engineous Games has announced that more than 800 UGC games have been created in two weeks using its Sketch Nation Shooter app.
The app lets people create their own shoot 'em ups by drawing enemies, backgrounds and ships on a piece of paper, then photographing them using their iPhone's camera, to import into their game.
The 99-cent app is about to get its first update, with a feature helping users to share their games on their Facebook walls.
The 800+ user-created games can be downloaded within the app, making it (sort of) iPhone's equivalent of PS3 game LittleBigPlanet. Except with more shooting, obviously.
"I've been overwhelmed by the response to Sketch Nation Shooter – it's very fulfilling to see so much unique and imaginative content being created by the community already," says Engineous CEO Nitzan Wilnai.

Many figures in the global stock market last night became incredibly excited after it was reported that Apple had for the first time overtaken Microsoft in a leading market ranking report.
The Guardian has reported, however, that once other variables were factored into the calculations, Apple hasn’t quite passed Microsoft’s market value – at least, not yet.
Last night’s furore was ignited when the Standard & Poor 500 Market Ranking stated that Apple’s float-adjusted market cap had reached $241.5bn, ahead of Microsoft’s $239.5. A company’s market cap is its stock price multiplied by issued stock.
However, it has since emerged that the Standard & Poor 500 Market Ranking omits shares held by government agencies and other publicly traded companies.

An article in the London Evening Standard claims that Apple has made an $8 billion offer to acquire ARM Holdings. For those few Slashdotters who don't already know, ARM makes the processor chips that power Apple's iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch. However, ARM processors are also used by other manufacturers, including Palm and, perhaps most significantly, companies building Android phones. This explains why Apple might be willing to spend so much on the deal — almost 20% of its cash reserves. Being able to control who gets to use the processors (and, more importantly, who doesn't) would give Apple a huge advantage over its competitors

Games developer Ludia has announced that its Where's Waldo? The Fantastic Journey iPhone game has sold more than one million downloads since its release in December.
The game - based on the books that are known as Where's Wally? here in the UK - has apparently topped the App Store charts in nine countries, and has been purchased every ten seconds since its release.
For most of that time, the game has cost $2.99 on Apple's store, although it benefited from a few weeks at $0.99 in March, which is when it topped the charts.
It's another sign of a popular offline brand striking it rich on iPhone. What's more, it's renewed proof of the lucrative market that exists for iPhone apps and games targeting a younger audience.
The question now is where Waldo/Wally will be next: Ludia is presumably keen to launch further games featuring the bespectacled star, on iPhone and possibly other platforms.

Nearly 60% of the time Americans spend using the mobile internet is social networking, according to a new report from research firm Ground Truth.
In fact, there is a huge gap between the 59.83% of time spent on social networking by US mobile subscribers and the 13.65% of time spent on portals, the next most popular category.
"While the popularity of mobile social networking is widely believed, this is the first time we have been able to truly quantify just how much the category is driving adoption of the Mobile Internet with actual usage metrics," says VP of marketing Evan Neufeld.
The company also broke out some usage stats for specific social networking services.
The average mobile user of MySpace and Facebook spends 30 and 40 minutes using them a week, respectively.
However, mobile-specific social networks have much more intensive usage. The average users of MocoSpace and AirG spend more than one and a half hours a week using them, for example.
"This data points to the fact that there is a whole universe of media properties advertisers need to consider that have to date been largely ignored," says Neufeld.
Well, up to a point. Facebook has more than 100 million mobile users globally, so while it may lack the mobile engagement of some of its rivals, its sheer size means it will prove attractive to advertisers if and when it ramps up its mobile advertising plans.

Straight from the bullshit department: a recent survey of 1500 women has found that men who own an iPhone are more attractive than those who do not. Women were particularly repulsed by men who own a Palm Pre, the study also found.
Ok, I made that second part up, but then again the first part was completely made up, too.
According to the survey, which was held by Phones 4u, an online retailer of iPhones (and other phones) and thus utterly neutral any way you look at it, 54% of women stated that they would be more likely to date a man if he owns an iPhone.
Which model, remains unclear.

Adobe has finally stepped down in its tussle with Apple over the porting of Flash based games to the iPhone and iPod touch. The news could have a significant impact on the way games are created for the Apple devices, and prompt a shift in the workings of studios committed to App development
The clash between Adobe and Apple reached its climax when the latter's latest iPhone Developer Program License Agreement was announced, affectively setting the wheels in motion to eradicate the use of the Flash-to-iPhone converter.
The sidelined technology lets developers port Flash-based games to the popular portable; something Apple never seemed completely comfortable with. As a result of the updated License Agreement, the motivation for studios to create games in Flash with a view to take them to iPhone is now near non-existant.
Otherwise known as a compiler, and part of Adove's CS5 package, the Flash-to-iPhone converter will still support targeting the iPhone and related platforms, but from now on Adobe is to invest no more time in developing the platform, as revealed by the company's Mike Chambers in a substantial blog post spotted by Mashable (via Tech Radar).
"We will still be shipping the ability to target the iPhone and iPad in Flash CS5," confirmed Chambers. "However, we are not currently planning any additional investments in that feature.
“If you want to develop for the iPhone you have to be prepared for Apple to reject or restrict your development at anytime, and for seemingly any reason,” he added, in an apparent criticism of Apple's notoriously draconian submission and rejection policies.
"The primary goal of Flash has always been to enable cross browser, platform and device development. The cool web game that you build can easily be targeted and deployed to multiple platforms and devices. However, this is the exact opposite of what Apple wants," stated Chambers.
"They want to tie developers down to their platform, and restrict their options to make it difficult for developers to target other platforms."

The latest augmented reality (AR) app to be released for iPhone has a musical focus.
ARGirl gets users to draw or print a simple AR marker, and then look at it through their iPhone's camera. We'll let its App Store description tell the tale:
* WOW! There is a pretty girl staying on the marker!
* Select songs to play from your iPhone library
* And AR girl will dance!!
The app, which works on all models of iPhone, has been developed by Apetrus, and it costs $1.99 on the App Store.
However, it illustrates one of the big questions around augmented reality, which is this: why?
You play some music, a virtual girl jiggles, and then... Well, it does seem like it has short-lived novelty value.
Then again, they said the same about fart apps...

iPhone sales jumped 131 per cent year-on-year to 8.75 million units in the first three months of 2010.
According to Apple's fiscal 2010 second quarter results, while iPod sales dropped 1 per cent to 10.89 million units, sales of the iPod touch - which runs the same OS as the iPhone - were up 63 per cent. The exact number of units wasn't specified.
Overall, Apple's quarterly revenues were $13.5 billion, up 49 per cent year-on-year. Profits jumped 90 per cent to $1.62 billion in the same period.
The company broke out more figures during its analyst conference call, including news that its iTunes store generated $1.1 billion of revenues from sales of music, video and apps during the quarter.
CFO Peter Oppenheimer said in a statement: "Recognized revenue from iPhone handset sales, accessory sales and carrier payments was $5.45 billion during the quarter compared to $2.43 billion in the year-ago quarter."
COO Tim Cook broke out some iPhone unit sales stats too: units grew 474% in Asia Pacific year-on-year, 183% in Japan, and 133% in Europe, as more operators signed up to sell the iPhone.
With iPad having launched after the close of the quarter, there were few new details on how it is selling, however, Oppenheimer did say that Apple is "extremely pleased" with sales so far, while Cook said they have "far exceeded our expectations". He denied that Apple is struggling to produce enough iPads for its roll-out plans though.
"We have done very well versus our planned capacity. There is not a production problem. It is sort of a good kind of issue to have that the demand in the US was much, much stronger than we predicted."
Cook was also bullish about the competition the iPad faces from netbooks. "I can’t think of a single thing the netbook does well. iPad does so many things very, very well."

DENVER - Bill Jordan was just doing a favor for a Canadian coworker who asked him to purchase a new Apple iPad, since the device wasn't yet available in Canada. But his goodwill gesture made him a target for thieves last Thursday afternoon at the Cherry Creek Shopping Center.
After purchasing the iPad, which can retail for $499 to $829 according to the Apple Store's website, Jordan went to the mall exit. While in between two sets of doors, a man crept up behind Jordan and started pulling the bag.
"He was pulling with all of his might, probably thinking that he could just pull it out of my hand and be gone quickly. But the chord (of the bag) was wrapped around my finger," he said.
That didn't stop the thief. Mall surveillance video shows that the man kept pulling the bag until he ripped Jordan's pinky finger.
"It was opened up to the bone all the way to the top. Like I told my wife when I saw it, I figured they wouldn't be able to save it."
Jordan's pinky finger on his left hand was amputated at the knuckle. The 59-year-old, who is left-handed, will likely need therapy to learn how to do things like type on a computer, using his injured hand.
"It just doesn't seem like, in my mind, something that is worth hurting someone over," Jordan said.
The thief, who was seen in earlier surveillance video with another man, eventually got the iPad and escaped through a south exit. Denver Police Department Spokesperson Sonny Jackson says, even though investigators don't know if the other man was waiting in a getaway car, they believe the pair had an escape plan and premeditated their crime.
"When they're walking above (on the second level of the mall) they see the (victim)," said Jackson. "They obviously targeted him and went for him and took his device."
Police are offering a reward of up to $2,000 for information leading them to one or both men, anonymous tips can be reported at 720-913-STOP (7867).
"The safety and security of our customers and the shoppers who are coming here is our first priority," said Cherry Creek Mall Marketing and Sponsorship Director Dave Dixon. He added that the mall keeps security guards constantly on staff, along with an undisclosed number of surveillance cameras.
"If there's a message here, it's that people have to be careful wherever they go," said Jordan.

Apple might not be too happy about having a fourth-gen iPhone prototype be stolen, but there's nothing like cold, hard cash to turn a frown upside-down -- and the company certainly made plenty of it in the second quarter of 2010, posting a $3.07b profit on $13.5b in revenue. That's the Apple's best non-holiday quarter ever -- profits were up 90 percent while revenue was up 49 percent -- and yet another record quarter for Steve and the gang. Mac sales were up 33 percent from a year ago with 2.94m units sold, iPhone sales were up 131 percent with 8.75m units sold, and iPod sales were down one point with 10.89m units sold. We're just about to jump on the analyst conference call, we'll let you know if we hear anything good -- we wonder what people might be asking about?

We'll be honest with you -- it literally pains us to write this. If you're the queasy type, we'd probably suggest scrolling on down and continuing about your day. For the hardcore still with us, the story goes a little something like this: a Denver-area man headed out to his local Apple store to pick up an iPad for a colleague (read: not even for himself), and in an interview, he admits to not even really understanding the fascination with Apple's new product. After doing his good deed and plopping down the plastic, he casually curled the strings atop the Apple bag around his hand as he headed for the exits. Unfortunately, a pair of thugs met him along the way, yanking the bag, the iPad and all of the flesh surrounding his pinky finger as they bolted for a getaway. Currently, police are investigating surveillance footage in hopes of tracking down the crooks who pulled off the stunt... and, uh, a bit more than they likely bargained for.

Apple has confirmed that the prototype next-generation iPhone acquired by tech blog Gizmodo is the genuine article.
In a letter sent to the blog's editorial director Brian Lam, Apple's SVP and general counsel Bruce Sewell wrote: "It has come to our attention that GIZMODO is currently in possession of a device that belongs to Apple. This letter constitutes a formal request that you return the device to Apple. Please let me know where to pick up the unit."
Gizmodo has also published more details of how it came to possess the device, claiming that Apple software engineer Gray Powell left the device behind in a German beer garden in Redwood City, California on the evening of 18 March.
The curious aspect to the story is that the person who found the handset seemingly called Apple to try to return it. "No one took him seriously and all he got for his troubles was a ticket number."
