It’s been a while since we’ve seen a steadicam, and to quench our thirst is this iPhone 4 steadicam. The system does use the typical 3 axis PVC gimbal and heavy weight setup that we’ve seen before, but (why has it taken so long to get this implemented?) the addition of a hand grip means you no longer get blistered fingers. The tutorial recommends the use of an expensive cup holder mounting system, but we think making your own epoxy one might save another dime and allow a wider range of cameras or phones.
The whole process is also wrapped up in a quick and simple how-to video (after the jump alongside an in action video), which goes to show even though a hack may have been done several times before, presentation can make a big difference and impact.

Whoa! After breaking the 1GHz barrier just three weeks ago, dauntless modder unixpsycho is back with yet another insane hack for the aging Palm Pre. What's new? Why, this "SR71 Blackbird" custom kernel, which simply pushes the poor little OMAP3430 processor up to 1.2GHz -- that's twice the original clock speed, just so you know. As glamorous as it sounds, potential users are triple-warned about this mod potentially failing the webOS device in one way or another, despite the built-in speed-scaling mechanism to cap the device at 55 degrees Celsius (131 in Fahrenheit). And needless to say, don't expect your stock battery to hold up for more than a few blinks once implemented. Good luck, pilgrims.

As if waiting around until fall to get iOS 4 weren't enough of a downer for iPad owners, the latest rumor we're hearing is that they'll have to pay a fee in order to do so. That's right, for the privilege of waiting patiently to get some semblance of multitasking on your slate device, you'll have to pony up the cash -- or so the story goes. Stuff has it on strong authority from app developers in the know that Apple will be asking for a (relatively small) tithe from those wishing to update their iPads when the leaves start turning amber. We'd advise keeping the pitchforks stowed for now -- at least until there's some solid corroboration for this -- but then it's not like Apple hasn't done this before.
Update: Apple's iPad licensing docs have been known to carry a provision that the "next major iPad OS software release" will be free, although iOS 4 and the word "free" do not happen to coincide in the same sentence -- overall though, that renders this rumor rather less likely to materialize.

Apple just posted up its third quarter earnings -- its first full quarter selling the iPad -- and, well, it's raining cash in Cupertino. The company posted a record profit of $3.35b on record revenues of $15.7b, which is up from $1.83b and $9.73b from a year ago. The big stat? Apple sold 3.27 million iPads, nearly matching the 3.47 million Macs sold -- and Mac sales were up 33 percent from a year ago to set a new quarterly record. Yeah, damn. iPhone sales -- including the first few weeks of the iPhone 4 -- were up 61 percent from a year ago to 8.4 million, and the iPod continued its slow decline, down eight percent to 9.41 million units sold. Over half of the Apple's sales -- 52 percent -- were international, and Jobs is quoted saying "we have amazing new products still to come this year." Not a bad way to head into back-to-school and the holidays, we suppose -- we've got a feeling those iPad numbers are just going to go up. The conference call to discuss all this is at 5pm ET, we'll be covering it live right here.

Samsung has become the latest smartphone maker to launch a defence of its products, following Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ claims that certain mobile devices suffer from signal problems similar to those of the iPhone 4.
In a web page dedicated to demonstrating that the iPhone 4 is not the only handset that loses reception if held a certain way, Apple wrote: “In our tests, the Samsung Omnia II dropped from 4 bars to 1 bar when held in a way that attenuated the signal.”
However, Samsung has refuted its rival’s claims. “Based on years of experience of designing high-quality phones, Samsung mobile phones employ an internal antenna design technology that optimises reception quality for any type of hand grip,” the firm said.
Nokia, RIM and HTC have also responded to the accusations, which Steve Jobs made on Friday, while offering iPhone 4 owners a free case which will supposedly solve the device’s signal problems.

July 19th, 2010, 17:24 Posted By: wraggster
InfoWorld executive editor Galen Gruman has launched a stinging attack on Microsoft's WIndows Phone 7, describing it as a 'tepid knockoff of a 2007-era iPhone'.
What brought all this on? Well, having initially given WinPho 7 a cautious 'thumbs up' earlier this year at the unveiling of the OS, Gruman was treated to an in-depth demo at last week's Mobile Beat conference.
And it seems all is not what it was initially cracked up to be. The Zune-based Metro UI comes in for most criticism from Gruman, describing it as 'awkward and unsophisticated', particularly with regard to navigating between different apps and tasks.
But he also rounds on the 'inexcusably old technology' under the hood, particularly the bundled IE 7's inability to handle HTML5, lack of multi-tasking outside of Microsoft's first party apps, and the absence of copy & paste functionality.
"Windows Phone 7 is a waste of time and money," said Gruman. "It's a platform that no carrier, device maker, developer, or user should bother with. Microsoft should kill it before it ships and admit that it's out of the mobile game for good. It is supposed to ship around Christmas 2010, but anyone who gets one will prefer a lump of coal. I really mean that."
Obviously these are comments based on the observations of one individual, and there are plenty of positive articles about WinPho 7 and its prospects out there.
Still, we think this is probably the last kind of feedback Microsoft wants to hear so close to the launch of what is surely its last chance to make an impact on the mobile market.

News via http://www.zodttd.com/wp/2010/07/a-c...-new-releases/
I’ve made two new releases to the ZodTTD Cydia repo since my last status update. Available now are:
psx4all – via Cydia Store
psx4all is the continuation of psx4iphone. It now supports all devices, including the iPad. Note that it isn’t iPad native resolution yet, but playing in portrait mode with 2x seems to work very well at the moment. It now supports the WiiMote, WiiMote Classic Controller extension, and has built-in download support. This emulator has come a long way, and on 3rd gen and 4th gen hardware it runs many games amazingly well. There’s still some compatibility tweaks to be made but overall you should be able to find a compatible game and have it perform well on a 3gs or iPad, for instance, with ease. On 2nd gen hardware the number of well performing games decreases, of course. An update is coming shortly to improve compatibility and fix slowdown issues reported when the device is offline.
OpenStreamer – via Cydia and RockApp
OpenStreamer is a fast media player. With the same capabilities, it replaces vlc4iphone and adds new features. OpenStreamer plays back local media as well as internet streams of all sorts of formats. It does so on the iPhone, iPod Touch, and the iPad (non-native currently). It’s a lot faster than previous versions of OpenStreamer and vlc4iphone, and has better options for playback in terms of performance and quality. Aspect ratio is now maintained during playback as well.
Check these releases out.
Thanks,
ZodTTD

A recent issue of “Neppu”, a Studio Ghibli-published news pamphlet, contains an interview with renowned director, Hayao Miyazaki. During the interview, in response to a reporter carrying an iPad, Miyazaki made his thoughts on the device heard.
Miyazaki, it turns out, feels the swiping gestures used to control the iPad look “strange”.
“For me, there is no feeling of admiration or no excitement whatsoever,” Miyazaki reportedly said about the iPad. “It’s disgusting. On trains, the number of those people doing that strange masturbation-like gesture is multiplying.” He recalls he felt similarly fed up when the trend of using cell phones and reading manga on trains broke out.
Miyazaki goes on to compare the iPad trend to the 1960s, where people carried cassette players with them. His problem, it would appear, is that the majority of people use technology only as consumers, and not to create or be productive. In fact, Miyazaki’s thoughts closely reflect those of Gundam creator, Yoshiyuki Tomino.
In the past, Miyazaki has revealed that he doesn’t own a computer. In reply to an interviewer inquiring as to whether or he used the Internet, he replied, “I don’t have a computer or fax. I don’t have a DVD player either and I forgot how to use a video recorder. I even seldom watch television.”
What about videogames? He’s tried playing a PC version of Shogi (a Japanese version of Chess) and lost. He believes that the CPU checks and counters all approaches, which isn’t fair. Naturally, Miyazaki is in no way involved with Ni no Kuni, Level 5’s upcoming PS3 and DS RPG, for which Studio Ghibli are providing the artwork and animation.
