Tired of waiting around for Apple's "review process" to complete? So was PlayOn. Rather than sticking it out and dealing with the App Store's near-limitless amount of red tape, the content streaming startup has kicked out an HTML5 web app that enables Hulu (for now, at least) and Netflix streaming to iPod touch and iPhone devices. It's still hard at work perfecting things for the iPad, but given that it's completely free to surf over to its mobile web site (linked below), it's tough to complain with what we're being given right now. Early testers have praised the app's speed, and while you'll still need a Windows PC (yeah, PlayOn still doesn't have a Mac client) and a PlayOn subscription before indulging on your mobile, at least you've got an option that you once didn't. So, anyone digging the new avenue?

Symbian has come out fighting in the smartphone war, proudly announcing that more than 27 million Symbian devices shipped in the second quarter of the year.
As the Symbian Foundation points out, that's nearly 300,000 a day (298,080 a day to be specific, given Symbian's claim of 207 handsets a minute).
"These figures make for very positive news for the Symbian community," says Symbian executive director Lee Williams (pictured).
"The smartphone market place has become more crowded than ever. So the fact we continue to outsell our competitors by such large margins, combined with all the feature commitments and developments published on our roadmaps, make us highly confident in our outlook and we will continue to embrace the challenges ahead."
Google recently announced that it was activating 160,000 Android handsets a day, by comparison. Meanwhile, Apple sold nearly 8.4 million iPhones during Q2 - around 93,000 a day.
The caveat for app developers is where those handsets are being sold, and how actively their buyers are using applications.

Say what you will about Nokia's strategy (or lack thereof), but there's no denying that the N900 is one capable gaming machine. Thus, it makes perfect sense for the blokes at Game Gripper to mold a controller specifically for that very handset, no? We've already spent a fair amount far too much time with our made-for-Droid edition, and if you're looking to boost your enjoyment level when playing NES ROMs, you can toss your pre-order in this very second. The company's offering the complete Game Gripper N900 for €14.95 ($20), or the button set alone for €3.95 ($5), with initial shipments expected in around a fortnight. Head on past the break for a taste of that aforementioned Mario action.

Apple is investigating reports that its iOS, which powers the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, is vulnerable to hackers.
According to Reuters, IT security firms Symantec, Lookout and Vupen have warned that a bug in the software could enable hackers to 'enslave' target devices.
The security loophole could allow the iPhone/iPad's Safari browser to automatically download a PDF containing malicious code (disguised as a font), which can then take control of the device.
The bug is also capable of sending itself to other devices as well as installing hidden tracking software and making calls to the emergency services. Nice.

Member of the illustrious iPhone Developer Program? Well, aren't you special? So special, in fact, that you're once again being granted access to a highly-coveted iOS build that the unwashed commoners can't get: yet another beta of iOS 4.1. This time around, it's beta 3, suggesting that Apple might be getting close to having this thing ready for the mass market; after all, it's been just a week since beta 2, and Apple tends to accelerate the pace when a release is drawing near. Now, what about that iPad version?
Update: Looks like there's some bad news for legacy users in this update... namely the fact that Game Center compatibility for second gen iPod touches and the iPhone 3G has been dropped. Thanks for nothing, Apple!

Look, we don't doubt for a second that Apple's working on an iPad with a front-facing camera to support FaceTime. That's the obvious next step in Apple's relentless, iterative product-refresh cycle that keeps the money rolling in. But a story loose on the interwebs claiming "evidence" of Apple's intent is likely bunk, having more to do with a copy and paste error made by a low-level tech writer than Apple inadvertently revealing plans for the next generation iPad. As the story goes, Apple tipped its hand by adding a bullet to its "iPad in Business" deployment overview document describing the ability to restrict the iPad's non-existent camera via Exchange policy or configuration profiles. Thing is, the text is a word-for-word copy of the existing "iPhone in Business" document as shown in the image above. Move along folks, nothing to see here... literally, Apple already removed the camera bullet from the iPad

As with any jailbreak or rooting of a handset, "hacking" a phone OS is usually exactly that: exploiting a weakness to get unsigned code onto a device. That means that any other hacker, be they sufficiently nefarious, could use that same exploit to mess with your phone in the bad, not-installing-emulators-off-of-Cydia sense. Early iPhone jailbreaks (back when installing your own ringtones was a wild idea) took advantage of a TIFF exploit, the recent EVO 4G root found a hole in Flash Lite, and the JailbreakMe exploit is stuffing its code in a PDF font. Until Apple patches this exploit (when asked, Apple told us it was "aware of the reports and looking into them") we'd be extra careful about which PDFs we open -- there aren't any reports of malicious use so far, but with Safari's seamless handling of PDFs, it wouldn't be hard for some hacker to hide a potentially phone-invading PDF behind some harmless looking hyperlink. The iPhone devteam points out that this isn't the only known exploit for Safari on iOS, so there's no need to start hyperventilating about this particular one... unless it's a slow day at your mainstream media publication and you're looking for something to hyperventilate about.
Oh, and are you looking for a surefire way to steer clear of PDFs? Cydia has a PDF loading warner that lets you skip PDFs your browser is trying to load on a case by case basis. Of course, you'll need to jailbreak your phone to use it. Ironic, right?

Despite all the hype about Apple's latest iPhone, Android has sold more in the last 6 months (27% of all smartphone sales) than Apple (23%). The gains for Android are coming at the expense of RIM (still #1 at 33%, down from 45% a year ago), Windows Mobile (11%, down from 20%) and the iPhone (down from 34% at it's peak 6 months ago). If the current trend continues, Android is expected to be #1 within the year.

"In this 7-minute video we explore the mysteries of Apple device charging. Usually, device makers need to sign a confidentially agreement with Apple if they want to say their charger 'works with iPhone / iPod,' and they're not allowed to talk about how the insides work. If you don't put these secret resistors on the data lines too, you get the dreaded Charging is not supported with this accessory. We demonstrate how anyone can make their own chargers that work with iPhone 4, 3Gs, etc.

The update 1.3 for Babel Rising is now available for free on the AppStore. It provides a lot more content such as 2 new spells and a number of great abilities that will make you feel even more like a god.
iTunes link: http://bit.ly/BABEL_RISING_iPhone
Gameplay video: http://bit.ly/bsFhcl
The red lightning and the burning bush
DIVINE mode allows the player to trigger NEW POWERS on the heretics:
- The red infernal lightning replaces the finger of God. Electrify heretics instead of smash them? Yes, it’s even funnier
- This is summer, and to celebrate this, the Tower of Babel is becoming a great Barbecue. Thanks to the burning bush, you are now able to burn workers and watch them grilling…
New special abilities
Get amazing bonuses that will give the player even more power:
- Control time to stop the workers’ progress!
- Multiply your bonus score by 10 and get a better score than your friends!
- Completely reload a power in one go and release your divine punishment on the humans.
A propos de BABEL RISING
In BABEL RISING, you are God! And from the heights of sky, you see that men are agitating themselves… and building a tower. A tower? To climb up to your heights? How arrogant and impudent they are… Time has come to teach your creatures how small they are and how great you are! You will have to use of all your divine spells, and to prevent them from building the tower.
The game offers a new challenge: slowing down as much as possible the building of the Tower of Babel. Humans are flooding the bottom of the screen and bringing stones. Step by step, they build the stairs and go higher and higher. You have at your disposal six different spells. With the “finger of God” (actually yours), always available, you can crush one human at once. But this spell is not powerful enough to contain the flow of humans. You must then implement more powerful spells, but the loading time is also becoming longer and longer: lightning, tornado, fire from heaven, Tsunami and finally earthquake will have to be used in good coordination and wisely. How long could you hold for humans?

We'd actually already hacked up a 3G FaceTime video call using an iPhone 4 and a MiFi, but now that Apple's latest handset has been jailbroken, you can toss the extra hardware -- you just need a little Cydia app called My3G, which lets you run WiFi apps over 3G. FaceTime video quality appears to be unaffected, but from what we've seen the framerates suffer depending on your connection -- pretty much what you'd expect to get when running a video stream optimized for high-bandwidth connections on a smaller pipe. Still, it's instantly the best reason to jailbreak your phone -- check a video after the break.
P.S.- If you're averse to jailbreaking, remember that Fring lets you make video calls over 3G without any shenanigans -- and unlike FaceTime, you can also video call non-iPhone users. Just sayin'!

Apple Insider is reporting on a browser-based 'jailbreak' for iPhone 4. Hackers on Sunday released the first 'jailbreak' for the iPhone 4, a browser-based exploit that allows users to run unauthorized code. Unlike previous jailbreaks, which required users to run software on their Mac or PC and tether their iPhone to their computer, the latest hack is done entirely within the Safari browser. Users simply visit the URL to begin the process, which modifies the iOS mobile operating system found on the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Some users have reported that the modification results in broken MMS and FaceTime functionality. This jailbreak does not work on iPads running iOS 3.2.1.

Global shipments of Android smartphones grew by 886 per cent last quarter, analysts have found.
Researchers attribute the unprecedented year-on-year rise in Q2 to new product launches from the likes of HTC, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and LG.
Android devices represented a 34 per cent share of the US market in the quarter, making Google’s platform the country’s most popular.
“Our detailed and complete country-level smart phone shipment data for Q2 2010 clearly reveals the impressive momentum Android is gaining in markets around the world,” said Canalys VP and principal analyst Chris Jones. “These products have been well received by the market, with consumers eager to download and engage with mobile applications and services, such as Internet browsing, social networking, games and navigation.”
In terms of vendors, Nokia retained its substantial lead in the global smartphone market, with a 38 per cent share. The Finland-based firm shipped a record 23.8 million units during the quarter.
RIM was once again the second placed vendor, with BlackBerry shipments rising 41 per cent, thanks to the popularity of devices such as the Curve 8520. The firm had an 18 per cent market share in Q2.
Despite the iPhone 4 antenna debacle, Apple held a 13 per cent share of the market, representing 61 per cent growth.
