Stop us if you've heard this one before -- an Apple event is looming, and suddenly some cases turn up online that seem to nicely line up with the devices rumored to be announced. These latest examples come courtesy of Chinese case retailer X-Doria, and include a case for what appears to be a 4th-gen iPod touch with a camera, and one that's described as a case for a "nano 6G," but could seemingly also be for a new iPod shuffle with a touchscreen. Of particular note, the apparent iPod touch case seems to reveal a curved back more similar to the current model than the iPhone 4, while the nano / shuffle case looks to be a near perfect match for that 1.7-inch Apple touchscreen that mysteriously turned up in Taiwan last month. What does it all mean? There's less than a week until we know for sure.

We knew this was coming and here it is: the Netflix application, heretofore reserved only for iPad users, has trickled down to iPhone and iPod touch devices. Version 1.1.0 makes the TV show and movie streaming app universal -- so long as your universe is known as iOS -- and looks to massively expand the available audience for Netflix's mobile effort. What are you waiting for, go get it already.

Wednesday next week Apple is hosting an international press event, taking place across the globe and linked by satellite. That likely means big news is immanent. Develop will of course be there.
Speculation is rife, and there's a strong chance it could be that Apple's answer to Xbox Live – the long awaited Game Centre – will make its debut along with the unveiling of iPhone OS 4.1.
John Gruber at Daring Fireball has alluded to the fact that an iPod of similar power to the iPhone 4 may also be annouced, and suggests that we may even see iTunes TV rentals, an Apple TV built on iOS, and perhaps an App Store for Apple TV.
The event kicks off on Wednesday. September 1st at 6pm GMT. Keep an eye on Devedop for more.

id Software co-owner Tim Willits has revealed that the Quake studio's iPhone strategy is in part driven by John Carmack alone, but that the company does intend to use it bulk out the Rage franchise.
"A lot of it's John driving it," Willits told GamesIndustry.biz. "Which is one of the great things about him – only John Carmack could whip out a game in his spare time." Carmack reportedly took just a fortnight to create the 60FPS iPhone demo of Rage demonstrated at QuakeCon earlier this month.
However, while iPhone is not id's core strategy, it does have a full team working on mobile titles.
"We have a digital group at id which we've created - we have dedicated artists, dedicated designers. And what our strategy for Rage and the digital platforms is to not be you can play the iPhone version or Rage, but they can both be additive to the experience. Because the Rage universe is more robust and more fleshed out than any other game that we've created in the past.
"So we can use other platforms to do prequels, or you can play other characters or you may have a whole game that revolves around racing, or a whole game that revolves around Mutant Bash TV. Because the world is so rich, it's like Star Wars. We can imagine a million different Star Wars iPad games – that's what we're trying to do with Rage."
Willits also revealed that the developer's new multi-team structure in the wake of last year's acquisition by Zenimax was easing development on the upcoming (but as yet unseen) Doom 4.
"The reason that the Zenimax/Bethesda/id family thing works is now that we have fully staffed up our Doom 4 group, those guys are working on id Tech 5, they're learned from our mistakes, they're using our methods and because as you develop a new technology in a game, the first the half of what you do always gets tossed out. Because technology changes and you don't know what you're doing at first, so in the past when we were 30 guys it would be ok to spend four or five years making a game.
"But as team sizes have changed and expectations have changed, we could not have followed that paradigm forever. We had to do something. So now that we have the multiple teams, the new technology, we'll get a faster turnaround for id Software."
Despite the new structure, the adoption of iPhone development and a decision to no longer license engines to other studios, Willits felt the venerable developer's goals were unchanged.
"The focus of id is make great games that sell a lot. Licensing was always nice, but nothing ever compares to making a game that sells 10 million copies. That's where our bread and butter is."

It's been promised for years and was said to have gone into production before, but it looks like this time it's for real -- that's the very first iControlPad fresh off the production line pictured above. No orders are being taken just yet, but that's promised to be announced soon on Craig Rothwell's Twitter feed (linked below), and the first run is said to be limited to 3,000 units, which are expected to sell out fast. It looks like that's just the beginning for the peripheral, though -- Rothwell is also promising to support additional phones in the future, which can be accommodated simply by swapping out the two side pieces. Need to get up to speed on the whole saga?

Apple has refused to allow the iPhone to be included in the UK's first environmental rating system for mobile phones.
The scheme was launched today by O2, in conjuction with environmental oganisation Forum for the Future.
Nokia, Sony Ericsson, HTC, LG, Samsung and Palm all signed up to take part, but Apple is noticeably absent. According to The Guardian, an Apple spokeswoman would not comment on why the firm was not involved in the scheme, which gives handsets a score of five according to how green they are.
Factors considered in the rankings include the raw materials used, the environmental impact of the manufacturing process, packaging, longevity, energy efficiency and how easy devices are to reuse or recycle.
Sony Ericsson’s Elm handset came top of the list of 65 mobile phones, achieving a score of 4.3 out of 5.
Peter Madden, chief executive of Forum for the Future, said: “Billions of people worldwide are using mobile phones to organise their lives. We want to reward manufacturers who make efforts to reduce their environmental impacts and think creatively about how their devices can contribute to a better world.”

Well, that was snappy. Just 24 hours after Android Police published a piece describing how easy it was to circumvent Google's new Android licensing server, the Big G is hitting back with a brief response that it promises to elaborate on in the future. In order to address any doubts that developers may have, Google has noted that its new service is still "very young," and "the first release shipped with the simplest, most transparent imaginable sample implementation, which was written to be easy to understand and modify, rather than security-focused." Interestingly, the outfit doesn't hesitate to pass some of the blame, saying that some devs "are using the sample as-is, which makes their applications easier to attack." For those who'd like to better obfuscate their code, Google will be publishing detailed instructions on how to do so in the near future. We also appreciate the honesty in this quote in particular: "100 percent piracy protection is never possible in any system that runs third-party code." As stated, the bullet points listed in the source link should be fleshed out in due time, but at least you hard working developers can rest easy knowing that Google isn't standing by and letting pirates run amok.

PhoneTorch turns your smartphone into a flashlight which supports both the screen's backlight and the camera's LED flashlight. PhoneTorch can run in the background, can start automatically, the light can be turned on and off via the camera key, and screen color can be changed. For emergency situations or just for fun there exists a Morse function for sending SOS and other Morse codes. This version is optimized for Symbian S60 5th Edition phones made by Sony Ericsson, including the Satio, Vivaz and Vivaz Pro.

ITunes accounts linked to Paypal have been targeted in a scam with a number of users complaining that they have been cleaned out.
Apple and Paypal refused to discuss the details of the incident.
Experts told the BBC that victims had most likely fallen for an e-mail scam, rather than being targeted via a flaw in iTunes or Apple servers.
"I just got hacked for $1,000 worth of software, videos and music," tweeted one victim.
Another told the technology blog TechCrunch: "My account was charged over $4,700. I called security at Paypal and was told a large number of iTunes stores accounts were compromised."
"My iTunes account just got hacked and someone made about $700 worth of purchases. I contacted Paypal and they said Apple has gotten so many attacks since June, they can barely keep up with reporting them all."
Apple would not comment but said that they had recently implemented new security measures.
In a statement to BBC News, Apple said: "iTunes is always working to prevent fraud and enhance the password security of all of our users.
"But if your credit card or iTunes password is stolen and used on iTunes we recommend that you contact your financial institution and inquire about cancelling the card and/or issuing a chargeback for any unauthorised transactions.
"We also recommend that you change your iTunes account password immediately."
Counter measures
Paypal and Apple would talk about the scale of the problem or how many people or accounts had been targeted.
Paypal said that any unauthorised charges will be reimbursed.
Victims of the hack turned to social media to find answers and vent
However, those in the security industry said they were not surprised by the incident.
"We have been hearing about attacks on iTunes for a while and it seems it is possible to game iTunes and make money," said Dan Kaminsky, chief scientist at security firm Recursion.
"I am sure Apple are getting a rapid education in what it means to be a mechanism that fraudsters can use to steal funds, but I don't expect this to be a long-term problem or a product-threatening one.
"Apple is going to have to adjust and make investments in fraud prevention technologies but this is not a big deal."
Security experts said that most of the victims had likely fallen prey to a phishing scam.
Phishing involves using fake websites to lure people into revealing details such as bank accounts or login names.
Often the fake websites are difficult to spot because they do a good job of reproducing the website of the company they are impersonating.
Security experts warn people not to hand over their details if they have any reason to be suspicious of a website. They also point out that legitimate companies will not send e-mails asking for personal account information.
Analyst Mike McGuire of Gartner said that Apple needs to ensure it stays on top of the situation.
"If they don't aggressively sort this out, it can undo a lot of brand building and trust as they become this transaction hub for 150 million people's credit cards at last count."

With Call Control for S60 from Melon Mobile parental control becomes really easy and efficient. Call Control blocks all incoming and outgoing voice and video calls, SMS and MMS from and to numbers not on the phone's contact list, plus all incoming WAP push messages.
