The rumors won’t stop flying about smaller Apple products coming out before the end of the year. First, the rumor of an 11.6-inch MacBook Air surfaced, now it would seem Apple is readying a 7-inch iPad. It is said to resemble the current iPhone 4 more than the current iPad model. It’s unclear if this new iOS device will carry the iPad or iPod brand name, but it may just end up being an oversized iPod Touch. Apple is also said to be working on the second-generation iPad, but it is not expected until next year.

The iPhone 4 went on sale today in China, with large crowds gathering outside Apple Stores in Beijing and Shanghai. The only authorized carrier in the country, China Unicom, said they received 200,000 pre-orders before sales began, and the phone apparently did brisk business at China Unicom retail outlets and Suning Appliance stores throughout the People's Republic. China Unicom requires a contract, though, and the carrier-unlocked phones available at the four Apple Stores in China are proving popular.
Most Chinese mobile phone customers pay month-to-month, rather than signing a contract. In addition, many just want to keep their existing phone number; the Chinese market does not aoffer portability. In an online survey by portal 163.com, over 70 percent of the more than 7,000 people surveyed said they would rather buy an iPhone 4 from Apple instead of China Unicom.

Sure, iPod nano watch straps may be the hot new accessory these days, but the folks at Rampant Gear aren't leaving the 5th generation iPod nano behind just yet -- the company's just introduced its new Ramant View contraption that turns your nano into a head cam. Is it the best head-mounted camera option around? Probably not, but it is cheap at just $35, and it's not very hard to find a deal on a previous-gen nano either if you don't have one already.

You could probably fill a book with Apple patent applications that never amounted to anything, but here's one that's at least been granted -- a "handheld device" that uses capacitive sensors to recognize your identity just by the way you hold it, and subsequently personalize the device's buttons and settings to your hand based on your user profile. That's all that's actually been patented here, but the general idea is a little more grand -- you could theoretically grip a handheld with either hand, and it would automatically generate "button zones" under each finger using sensors (or disappearing buttons, perhaps) baked right into the chassis, making cries of "you're holding it wrong" hopefully fade into obscurity. Still, it's not the first time we've seen Cupertino reaching for digit recognition and we're sure it won't be the last, so we'll just file away our enthusiasm until or unless Jobs announces it on stage.

It seems like Apple's legal team is constantly embroiled in a pitched battle of some sort, but this weekend they might get to relax -- citing recent iPhone policy changes, the European Commission's decided to stop breathing down their necks. Though the EU originally joined the US Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission in investigating why Cupertino chose to block third-party dev tools and ads earlier this year, the fact that Apple recently relaxed both restrictions (and created a repair program for iPhones purchased abroad) satisfied European regulators. "The Commission intends to close the investigations into these matters," it wrote earlier today. There's no guarantee that the US powers-that-be will exercise similar leniency, of course, but we wouldn't be surprised -- even inside Apple, the DoJ's got other fish to fry.

Yesterday Nokia and AT&T announced a mobile software coding contest worth $10 million in prize money. The move is intended to help Symbian compete with Android and iOS. The day before this announcement, Sony Ericsson said it would not be making any new Symbian devices and is instead focusing on Android. That left Nokia pretty much alone with Symbian, and now it wants to find new coding 'friends' to keep the platform alive. Natural selection seems to be slowly eroding Symbian's future. Is this contest too late?"

The newest member of the PS3 jailbreaking tool crowd is the iPod family. More specifically, iPods running the open source media firmware Rockbox. Even better news, theoretically it should be possible to use this same method on any MP3 player running the Rockbox software. Right now the exploit package only works on select generations of the iPod Nano and iPod Classic line, but if the trend set by the PSX-scene forums continues, it would be worth checking back in the near future if your device is not already supported. Thanks to [shuffle2] for providing the hack, and [DanAdamKOF] for the heads up.

In a new patent, Apple has revealed plans for new devices without any buttons at all: using technologies like capacitive sensing, resistive sensing, and surface acoustic wave sensing, the device's case would respond to touch and hand gestures. "The touch sensing devices may for example be selected from touch panels, touch screens or touch sensitive housings," according to the patent, entitled "Hand held electronic device with multiple touch sensing devices". You'd be able to control an iPhone with the same hand you hold it in, and secure it to your unique hand print.

That picture above is no joke -- that's where I ended up last night trying to revive my Droid X review unit. It was fun, in a hacky mad-scientist sort of way, but it's also really sad -- a testament to how Google approves Android device hacking with a wink and a nod, but doesn't provide any safety nets for its most passionate users.
Let's back up, though. How did I end up in such dire straits? It started when I had the nerve to update this Droid X to the leaked Android 2.2 build -- a simple process that involved installing the file on a microSD card and restarting. Unfortunately, since Motorola refuses to provide a sanctioned upgrade path from the leaked build to the official 2.2 build released earlier this week, I was forced to downgrade back to 2.1 to get back on track. Based on how easy the update was, this would be a piece of cake, right?

Slashdotters have read extensively about the iPad pilot programs at colleges and universities: Australian schools are iPad crazy, we read yesterday, and thanks to the iPad's success, 2011 will be the year of the tablet. But on US college campuses almost half a year after the iPad's launch, it's a whole different story — at least so far this year. FoxNews.com reports that high-profile schools like Duke and Stanford are far more cautious about the device than has previously been reported. 'It definitely facilitates studying and recall because you don't get bogged down by all the paper,' noted first-year Stanford med student Ryan Flynn. But it's still a work in progress. 'The iPad isn't the best input device. Some people have gone back to paper and pencil.

According to Jeffrey Fidacaro, an analyst with Susquehanna Financial Group, individuals within Apple's overseas supply chain report that the company will begin assembling its first round of CDMA iPhones in December. The suppliers in question tell Fidacaro that Apple could build as many as three million CDMA iPhones before January 1, 2011.
If such ambitious plans materialize, Apple Insider notes that total GSM and CDMA iPhone production for the quarter would come in at around 22 million. Fidacaro, however, predicts that Apple will sell just under 12 million iPhones in the fourth quarter of the company's fiscal 2010. "We expect the September 25 launch of iPhone in China and Apple's target of making the iPhone available in 88 countries by month end to aid results in 4QFY10," he noted. "Our checks show that Apple is still struggling with yields on the mass production of the white iPhone 4."

Looks like it's not just Apple fanboys that are going wild for the iPad: in Australia, virtually every state education department is trialling the tablet in schools — and some schools are even trialling it without the official support of their department. One university in Adelaide has even abolished textbooks for first year science students and is allocating free iPads to first year students instead. It will be interesting to see what happens when the inevitable wave of Android tablets hits over the next six months.

News from Evil Dragon
We just got the update that testing results won't be there before Monday.
They have not enough testing cycles yet.
For me, this sounds good - as it means the current nubs haven't failed testing yet.
Don't take my word for that, we'll know for sure next week. However, if they had failed the test already, they wouldn't need more cycles
Fingers crossed

Mobile and social game publisher Gameloft has sold over 20 million of its paid-for titles on Apple's App Store since the service began in July 2008.
Of the company's 47 games, 42 of them made it into the top 5 selling list at some point, 25 of them reaching number one.
Big sellers for the publisher have included Let's Golf 1 and 2, Iron Man 2 and N.O.V.A., which launched exclusively for iPhone 4. Gameloft hopes to add another 15 games to its App Store catalogue by the end of the year, including adaptations of NFL, Assassin's Creed and Spider-Man.
"The first half of 2010 marks a new step for us on the App Store," said Gameloft president Michel Guillemot.
"The launch of the iPad and iPhone 4 has opened new horizons for developers and allowed us once again to transform our consumers gaming experience. 20 million paid downloads is proof that our games meet the expectations of our players and we will continue to satisfy them."
Recently, Gameloft announced that increased App Store sales had helped the company to increase its profits by 15 per cent, posting second quarter sales of €33.6 million (£28.5m).

The Dev-Team has just released a fresh beta version of redsn0w, version 0.9.6b1, which allows users to jailbreak the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G on iOS 4.1 or 4.0.
The tool uses the same pwnage2 DFU-mode exploit that we’ve all been using with redsn0w since the 2.x days. There is nothing new for Apple to patch from this update, it's simply still compatible.
For those that are getting excited, settle down: this does not include the SHAtter exploit that has been on everyones mind lately.
Quote:
IF YOU USE THE ULTRASN0W UNLOCK, PLEASE WAIT FOR PWNAGETOOL TO SUPPORT 4.1. DO NOT USE REDSN0W. That’s because to use redsn0w at 4.1, you need to already have updated to official 4.1 from Apple. If you do that, you lose the ultrasn0w unlock (possible forever).
Currently redsn0w 0.9.6b1 is only available for Mac OSX, but a little birdie tells me that iH8sn0w may have the same thing up his sleeve for the same situation, but for Windows users.
Quote:
Note: if you have an “MC” model of the ipt2g, your jailbreak will be tethered…sorry! (Consider rolling back to a FW supported by jailbreakme.com or spiritjb.com)
Learn more about the specifics at the Dev-Team's Official Blog. Also check out the Wiki if its not overloaded with traffic http://wikee.iphwn.org/howto:rsbeta
