We've already got the Mac OS X update, and here's iTunes 10.1. Next stop? iOS 4.2. If your copy of iTunes isn't pushing the update, you can head to Apple's page where it'll be there, waiting for you. In addition to paving way for the new iOS, iTunes 10.1 adds the much anticipated video AirPlay feature (it launched as audio only), so fire up that Apple TV and push yourself some vids!

We suspect most developers have gathered this since MIX earlier this year -- many of them have been dealing with variations of the problem since the genesis of Microsoft's .NET Framework -- but we thought we'd throw out a note that word's getting around on how easy it is to tear apart applications downloaded from the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace, gain access to their resources, and get a look at their inner workings. Microsoft has been encouraging developers on the desktop to make this tough by using code obfuscation tools -- Dotfuscator, specifically -- for many years, but Dotfuscator's developer has only just released a free version (through March 31 of next year) for WP7, so it's made things tough to secure. In other words: business as usual, and "business as usual" isn't as airtight as your average white-hat dev would like.
On a happier note, an enterprising coder by the name of Chris Walsh has fleshed out some hooks into unmanaged (read: native) Windows Phone 7 services. It's not what we'd call a "jailbreak" -- you're not altering the security settings of the device in any way -- you're just taking advantage of undocumented services Microsoft has in place, though it's still very cool. Walsh promises some tutorials on hooking into cool stuff like file system and registry access soon, but he notes that apps using these hooks are still running as managed tasks, meaning they can be slapped around by the kernel (killed, suspended, and so on) just as any other WP7 app can -- and we also doubt you'd be able to get Marketplace approval using this stuff.

Can you feel the iOS 4.2 anticipation building? After all, it's not every day your tablet computer gets upgraded to multitasking. Apple just seeded a new gold master of iOS 4.2 to developers (build 8C134b, as opposed to 8C134), which deals with the WiFi issue that apparently delayed the launch. As long as this build is free of any more killer bugs, that new copy of iOS should make its way to proletariat hardware soon -- though obviously this week looks like a no-go.

vanstinator was one of several readers to point out that Christie's is holding an auction for one of the original Apple 1 machines, complete with a manual, the original shipping box, and the letter from Steve Jobs to the owner. The invoice says the computer was purchased on December 7th, 1976, with an Apple cassette interface card, for a total price of $741.66. The auction house expects it to sell for over $160,000.

A Lego Mindstorms robotics kit controlled by an HTC Nexus One smartphone successfully untangled a Rubik's Cube puzzle in 12.5 seconds at this weeks ARM technical conference in Silicon Valley. The current 3x3x3 cube-solvers's 15-second average represents a substantial improvement over the 25-second solutions of an earlier version, which was powered by a circa-2006 Nokia N95 smartphone, thanks to a faster (1GHz) CPU, more RAM, and revamped cube-solving algorithms. ARM Engineer David Gilder, who created the robotic cube-solver, claims the current version's algorithms can handle cube complexities up to 100x100x100, assuming he build the mechanics. In terms of racing humans, Gilder says the Lego robotics kits can only manage around 1.5 moves per second, whereas human players can make between 5 and 6 moves per second, amazingly enough.

November 12th, 2010, 00:15 Posted By: wraggster
Microsoft's reboot of its smartphone division seems to have suffered a major setback in its first real test, apparently selling only 40,000 Windows Phone 7 devices on the day of its release in the US - despite an estimated $100 million marketing budget.
That figure is spread across nine different models of smartphone supporting the new OS and architecture, between the two US carriers currently stocking the phone - At&T and T-Mobile.
The figure was reported by business site The Street, which cites its source as a 'market research firm' but does not give details. No international figures are available.
To put that figure into context, Apple claims that 270,000 iPhones are being sold each day, internationally, while Google puts the daily sales for its Android phones at around 200,000.
"It's early in the game," Nielsen telecom analyst Roger Entner told The Street. "Not every product surges right out of the starting blocks. The first Android phone was not a big seller at T-Mobile."
"We'll see what happens with Black Friday sales. They'll probably cut prices like everyone else does. It's the nature of the beast. The only one that doesn't do promotions is Apple."
However, many retailers and twitter users posting with the #WP7 hashtag were reporting sell-outs across the US and in other territories. Microsoft and the US carriers have declined to publish any official sales figures for the phones.
Windows Phone 7 offers customers integrated Xbox Live and Games for Windows Live support - a feature countered by Apple's Game Center feature.

According to a recent research survey, iPhone 4s are the most reliable smartphones, while still being the most prone to accidental damage. Third-party warranty provider SquareTrade looked at their SquareTrade Care Plan database and analyzed failure rates of over 50,000 smart phones covered by the company's Care Plans, finding that the iPhone 4 had the least malfunctions but was the most susceptible to accidents. The study also showed that all manufacturers improved their failure rate since the first such study in 2008.
SquareTrade looked at four months of iPhone 4 warranty claims, eight months of claims from Motorola and HTC owners, and a year of iPhone 3GS claims, then extrapolated a 12-month failure rate - excluding accidental damage - for all devices. The iPhone 4 device was the most reliable with only 2.1% of the owners reporting a malfunction, followed closely by iPhone 3GS...

French citizens have been enjoying webOS 2.0 with their morning baguette for over two weeks, but it's one step closer to home today -- Pocket-lint reports that the Palm Pre 2 will launch in the United Kingdom this Friday. What's more, the 1GHz handset won't be chained to a British carrier, but rather released into the wild completely SIM-free, which probably means future Just Typists will need to buy it direct from HP. As for the promised pre-orders for US students, we're sorry to say they've failed to materialize; the Facebook page that once clearly stated "preorders begin 11/8" now simply reads "Palm Pre 2 coming soon." Soon enough for you?

As expected, Sprint's just announced the ZTE Peel for the iPod touch will arrive on November 14th. The $79 slider case for Apple's media player features a built-in mobile WiFi hotspot, essentially turning your iPod into a bulky iPhone without a native phone or SMS app. Of course, you'll still be stuck paying Sprint for a $29/mo data plan, but you'll be able to connect up to two devices to the Peel's WiFi as well, so that's a plus. Another big plus: since the iPod thinks it's on WiFi, you'll be able to use FaceTime on the road -- something we've tried using a MiFi with pretty decent results. Of course, you'll be saddled with a big fat case around your oh-so-slim iPod, and we can't imagine why the Peel is limited to WEP when it comes to security, but we'll definitely applaud Sprint for attitude when it comes to iOS devices on its network-- now just kick out a 4G Peel and we'll be all set.

It may not solve some of the problems involved with actually running Android on an iPhone, but the recently released Bootlace 2.1 application for jailbroken iPhones does at least make the installation process easier than ever. Unfortunately, it only works with the iPhone 2G and 3G at the moment, but it will let you install Android 2.2 (a.k.a Froyo) directly on the device without the need for a computer. Hit up the source link below for the complete installation instructions -- and insert your own joke here about the iPhone running Froyo while your Android phone is still stuck at 2.1.

Development staff at Warner Bros’ new Montreal outfit are said to be angered at management’s decision to shift the studio’s focus to social and mobile games.
Warner Bros needs to grow its Montreal workforce to 300 employees by 2015 – a strategy first conceived for triple-A production.
Yet Warner Bros Montreal’s existing 26 employees are, according to Canadian newspaper Lapressaffaires, being told to work on bite-sized mobile/social games and a microtransaction-based MMO.
“Some staff were surprised by the change in philosophy, sometimes to the point of leaving the company,” the paper alleged.
The studio’s general manager Martin Carrier said the focus is a response to a games market in flux; with the social and mobile spaces offering lucrative alternatives to triple-A production.
"Before, we perceived the [social/mobile] market as a secondary market, but today is a growing market with the democratization of video games. Commercially, we believe we can sell more than games on a grand scale," Carrier told the paper.
Local politicians have invested a $7.5 million grant, as well as various tax credits, in the studio.
Projects underway and in place at Warner Bros Montreal will draw from DC Comics-related IP.

iPhone owners carry higher balances on their credit cards than Android, Blackberry, and Windows Mobile users, according to an analysis by a mobile financial service provider. Pageonce published data today showing that, on average, iPhone users have a 35% higher balance on their monthly credit card statement than the average Windows Mobile user. However, the average monthly phone bill was lower for iPhone users than for any other smartphone.
The Pageonce app monitors users' cash flow, spending and bills and organizes account information and transactions. The company used data from 275,000 of its three users - including at least 5,000 users for each mobile platform - to look at how owners of different smartphones compare.

It seems that the iPhone 2g and 3g are the newest phones to get Android 2.2, codenamed Froyo. The process for installing Froyo if you have a jailbroken device seems to get even easier every time, with this revision being as simple as adding a repository, downloading Froyo, and pressing go. Follow the link for a wonderful step by step guide, complete with screenshots to take out all of the guess work. Android on iPhone sure has come a long way since the first time we covered it.

Sure, it might not make for as good of an R&B album title as Nilay Patel's "Beautiful Handcuffs," but Interactive Fabrication's "Beautiful Modeler" iPad app is probably a bit more useful (though not as useful with the ladies). The concept is to use the iPad's multitouch screen as an input for multi-finger 3D modeling on a computer, while the tablet's tilt sense lets you navigate around the object. Sure, it's not as slick or precise as, say, the Axsotic 3D mouse, but it also looks a whole lot more "tangible." Unfortunately, the app is currently unavailable on the App Store, and we have no idea if it's ever headed for a computer near you -- Interactive Fabrication is all about the high concept stuff, leaving the execution to individuals -- but there's some freely available GPL-licensed source code if you want to take a crack at compiling and making a real product out of this.

Ah, the beautiful, ever-useful jailbreak and the developers that make it worthwhile. It's already unlocked the magic of FaceTime over 3G, and now it's making FaceTime capable with any old iPhone 3GS handset (thanks to the iPhoneIslam Team, who did the heavy lifting). Of course, lacking a front facing camera, the resulting video chat might be a little short on faces, but the functionality certainly isn't hurting anybody. Right, Apple? Hit up the app on Cydia and start streaming to your heart's content, and if you're wary there's a demo video after the break.

In this article, security researcher Nitesh Dhanjani shows how iOS insecurely launches third-party apps via registered URL handlers. Malicious websites can abuse this to launch arbitrary applications, such as getting the Skype.app to make arbitrary phone calls without asking the user. Dhanjani 'contacted Apple's security team to discuss this behavior, and their stance is that the onus is on the third-party applications (such as Skype in this case) to ask the user for authorization before performing the transaction.' He also discusses what developers of iOS apps can do to design their software securely and what Apple can do to help out."

Hi everyone. This is a port of Mednafen's PC Engine emulation to Android, and my first ever emulator port. I've only tested on a Droid/Milestone for now but hopefully it will run on other devices. I'm planning to have regular updates with more features/optimizations and other emulator ports in the future.
Hope you'll enjoy it Smile
Update: Version 1.2.0: supports homebrew PS3 consoles (runs HuCards only).
Update: Version 1.3.0: PS3 port supports bin+cue format CDs.
PCE.emu is PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 emulator written in C++ for Android, iOS and PS3. It uses the emulation backend from Mednafen and is built on top of the Imagine engine. The source is released under the GPLv3 license.
Coming in future updates:- Additional speed optimizations
- Updated GUI with more control & display options
- Native Wiimote support (may require Android 2.0+, I'm still looking into it)
The Android version is designed for the Motorola Droid/Milestone, but should work on devices with similar specs. Actual speed depends on a combination of CPU clock speed and the how fast textures upload to the device's GPU. The PS3 version will run on any homebrew-capable console. The iOS version runs on any compatible device but an ARM Cortex-based CPU is recommend (iPhone 3GS and newer). Get it for your platform on the Downloads page.
Features:- Accurate emulation and high compatibility rate.
- Zip file support
- CD emulation via loading cue files, you must have a system card rom named syscard.pce in the same directory as your cue files.
- Cue files may use external audio tracks in Ogg Vorbis & Wav (PCM, ADPCM, etc) formats (not working on PS3 currently)
- Optional on-screen multi-touch controls in addition to keyboard controls (needs Android 2.1 for multi-touch)
- Backup memory and save state support, one auto-save and one manual slot for save states
- No user activation or other nonsense
Performance Notes (as of version 1.3.0):- Android : 55-60fps with hucards on a 550Mhz Droid running Android 2.2. CDs may need slight overclock (600-700Mhz) to run at similar speeds depending on the game's screen mode. On-screen controller can cause a small speed hit so disable it when not in use, will be optimized in the future.
- iOS: 60fps on iPhone 4 with hucards & CDs (~50% cpu utilization). 20-30fps on iPod Touch 2nd gen.
- PS3: 60fps with hucards & CDs.
Default Controls for Android:- D-pad : navigate menus (Up & Down), Left to go up a directory in file picker, Right to select highlighted entry
- Z, X : Buttons I & II
- Space : Select
- Return : Run
- Menu : open/close the main menu
- L : go directly to Load Rom menu
- Q : Save State
- W : Load State
- Search : Fast-forward in-game
- Back button : Exit game or go back in menus
Controls for iOS:- Touch top-right corner : open the main menu
- Touch bottom-left corner : Fast-forward in-game (deactivates upon next input elsewhere on screen)
Controls for PS3:- D-pad : navigate menus (Up & Down), Left to go up a directory in file picker, Right to select highlighted entry
- Cross : confirm/select menu entry, Button I
- Circle : cancel menu entry/go back, Button II
- Select : Select
- Start: Run
- L2 : open/dismiss menu
- R2 : Fast-forward
Currently known issues/bugs:- No international character support in gui
- Not really a bug, but when running on a case-sensitive file system make sure your CUE file specifies references in the same case as on the file system.
- PS3: only 1 controller is supported
- PS3: loading a CUE file with external audio tracks causes the system to lock up
- PS3: sound is not synced properly, causes slight distortion in the audio
