With the release of Firmware version 4.2.1, rises the concern of jailbreaking and unlock compatibility. If your waiting for an unlock, wait for the ability to create custom 4.2.1 firmwares. If you’re not an unlocker, then there is good news for jailbreaking your devices.
Those of you who own an iPhone3G, older iPhone3GS, and non-MC iPod touch 2G will benefit the most with this news from the Dev-Team. They explain that due to a combination of the original pwnage2 exploit, the arm7_go exploit, 24kpwn, and limera1n, your device is “just as jailbreakable as ever.”
For those of you with the newer devices, geohot’s limera1n exploit, will actually work just fine. The unfortunate news is that, as of right now, the 4.2.1 jailbreak is *tethered* on new devices. What is a tethered jailbreak? "A tethered jailbreak means that each time your device loses battery power or needs to be rebooted, you must attach it to a PC or Mac

Orange and T-Mobile will subsidize Wi-Fi + 3G iPads for customers who order 18 month and 24 month service plans. Although there's no pricing information from either company or their parent Everything Everywhere, reports claim that the iPad Wi-Fi + 3G 16GB will be available for ÂŁ200, which about $320 US.
The UK advertising site MarketingWeek was out first with the news that Everything Everywhere, the British wireless behemoth formed out of the merger of Orange UK and T-Mobile UK was planning to sell iPads at reduced prices for the Christmas holiday. Orange later acknowledged the plan in a press release, but there is as yet no official confirmation from T-Mobile, and no information about pricing.

News via http://modmyi.com/forums/iphone-news...jailbreak.html
Just as Paul had said early this morning, iOS 4.2 has now been greenlit to go live and is available for download to the public. Many iPad users will be excited for this, of course that is unless you require/love/need/want a jailbreak.
If your hoping to jump on the iOS 4.2 firmware, do not expect a jailbreak to be ready just yet. This may take a few weeks to a month, or even a day. What's important right now, is to stay on iOS 4.1 and make sure your SHSH Blobs are saved. This will ensure you can always preform a jailbreak on your device at this firmware version. If you do not want to lose your jailbreak, DO NOT UPDATE to iOS 4.2 yet. Pleas wait until official tools have been updated/released.
While the new features look great, be patient, and in time you will be able to upgrade. But for now, play safe, and stay away from that update.

News via http://modmyi.com/forums/mac-news/73...w-heights.html
There was a lot to absorb today from Apple's comprehensive press release heralding the arrival of iOS 4.2 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. From making the "Find My iPhone" feature free and able to use sans MobileMe, to countless new attributes for the iPad (like multitasking, folders, etc.) and the dawn of Game Center, AirPlay & AirPrint, Apple is keeping us on our toes today with no shortage of sweet arrivals for our iDevices.
Understandably, there's a lot to be distracted with from Apple's iOS 4.2 drop today. One such example of a buried morsel of overlooked information is the fact that customers have now downloaded in excess of seven billion apps from the App Store. We've also officially breached the 300,000-level in terms of applications now available for download in 90 countries. Remarkable, of course, is that 40,000 of those apps are native to the iPad

One gets the sense that Apple-savvy customers have caught on to the likelihood of Apple releasing a second-generation iPad in the not-too-distant future. Although many analysts don't anticipate a release of iPad 2 before spring, the prospect of a first quarter refresh of the iPad next year is now believed to be discouraging many customers from purchasing the first generation iPad this holiday season either for themselves or for someone else.
In recent weeks, the same sources (overseas suppliers) who reported the forthcoming iPad 2 have similarly begun expressing concerns that the looming prospect of a brand new iPad (likely one with a front facing camera for FaceTime video chats) will severely hamper the current runaway sales of the Apple tablet. Yours truly can even report two individuals purchasing huge Apple holiday gift cards at a Chicago Apple retail outlet this past weekend for this very reason

Id Software has released Rage, an on-rails first-person shooter for iOS. The game is visually stunning, and is a great demonstration of just how good an iOS game can look. Video games have really come a long way since the iPhone was first introduced three years ago, and game developers like Id continue to push the iOS hardware to its visual limits.
Id Software’s Doom Resurrection was released back in ’09 and it was quite a visual treat back then. Now that Rage is available in the App Store, the bar has been raised once again. Rage is available in two flavors, a standard version ($.99) and Rage HD ($1.99) with higher resolution textures and graphics. Rage HD is definitely the one to check out, but the game requires at least a third generation iOS device or an iPad.

Apple is releasing iOS 4.2.1 today for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, finally unifying all iOS product lines under the same firmware version. As a part of the update, Apple will make Find My iPhone available for free to owners of newer iOS devices that can run iOS 4.2.
Ahead of the release - expected to drop at 10 am Pacific time in the US, 6pm GMT - Apple updated the iOS webpage to highlight all of the iOS 4 functionality iPhone and iPod touch users have been able to use for months that will now be coming to the iPad. Apple's (as yet unconfirmed) plans to make an iPhone with a built-in, programmable SIM chip is getting a strong push-back from European carriers who would have the most to lose from the shift away from physical SIMs. The Financial Times of London reports that carriers are saying Apple may provoke a "war" if they pursue this technology, and that they may decide to just stop offering iPhone subsidies in protest. Meanwhile, the industry group representing carriers is working on its own embedded SIM.
As we reported a few weeks ago, Apple is said to be working with SIM-card manufacturer Gemalto to make a programmable SIM-on-a-chip that would let consumers buy a phone directly from Apple and activate it with the carrier of their choice via iTunes.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has turned the blogosphere upside down twice this past week. First, in a recently published interview with Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, Wozniak was quoted saying that smartphones running Google's Android mobile operating system will likely have a better and brighter future than Apple's very own iPhone. It's a comment that got everyone in the tech space talking, including PC World, which published the following on Thursday:
Quote:
Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak thinks Android will eventually beat the iPhone as a mobile-phone platform in much the same way Windows computers squeezed Apple's market share in the PC

[Mike Silverman] rigged up a way to make his monitor sleep from an iPhone. Working with a Windows system, he installed QuickPHP and NirCmd to add PHP and command line controls. Some quick PHP code writing and this has the effect of creating a sleep button toggled via a network address. He loads up the IP and port information in the Safari browser of his iPhone, creating a Home Screen short cut seen in the image above. Now he clicks on the button and puts the screen to sleep.
It’s not that we find this functionality useful since most monitors sleep after a few minutes of inactivity. But we like the methodology and you can bet we’re already planning uses for this. Any PHP server (like the copy of Apache running on this machine) will do as long as it’s on the same LAN as the iPhone’s WiFi connection.

As the new year approaches, there's a surge in rumors about the next-generation iPad. Consistent reports have indicated that the tablet will get a refresh ahead of its one-year anniversary in April, which would mean that production should start ramping up right about now. Rumors out of the Asian supply chain say that suppliers have been picked for the 2G iPad, and one financial analyst is claiming that the new model will have a "world-mode" chip that can run on both AT&T's and Verizon's networks.
DigiTimes, the hit-or-miss electronics industry gossip newspaper out of Taiwan, says that Apple has chosen circuit board suppliers for the 2011 iPad. Production of any-layer high-density interconnect (HDI) circuit boards will begin at Ibiden, Tripod Technology and TTM Technologies in December

The CEO of the Financial Times newspaper told his 1,800 employees in a memo Thursday he will give anyone who buys an iPad or other tablet a reimbursement of ÂŁ300 (about $480 US). In the memo, CEO John Ridding said the company was "making this investment because digital channels and tablet devices are becoming increasingly important for us."
The FT's iPad app has 40,000 registered users, which represent 10 percent of the paper's digital subscriptions, and has made ÂŁ1 million from sales of in-app advertisements since it was launched in May. The strategy in trying to get its own employees hooked on iPads seems to be both a way to get more feedback on the app

In the ongoing effort by Apple to expand the iPad's reach across the globe as much as possible before the end of 2010, now comes word that Northern Europe may be next on the list to see the tablet's arrival before the dawn of 2011. In recent days, many country-specific Apple pages throughout Northern Europe have begun advertising the iPad and carriers for 3G connectivity for the first time.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the Nordic countries on tap to get the iPad include Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. So far, the regional carriers advertised to provide 3G service to new iPad owners are Telenor ASA, TeliaSonera AB, Tre, and Tele2 AB. It isn't yet clear if the iPad will be available through the carriers as well as Apple in Northern Europe, but it doesn't appear so. TeliaSonera, for example, says it will only provide 3G service for the tablet. It won't actually stock and sell the device. As of this writing, data plans and contract terms have not been confirmed

Hints of a free MobileMe service can be seen in a new framework in the iOS 4.2 gold master. Error messages show when a user has reached "the maximum number of free accounts" for a given device and when a device is not “qualified for free MobileMe service." There's also a message saying that an Apple ID can't be used for MobileMe Mail but can be used for other services.
When the iOS 4.2 GM originally dropped last month, many people noted that it allowed users to sign in to their MobileMe accounts using their Apple IDs. This led to renewed speculation that Apple might offer a free MobileMe service for iDevice users through their Apple IDs.

A 17-year-old in New York City who bought parts from China to make white iPhone 4 conversion kits has made a pile of money… and a potentially dangerous enemy. Fei Lam, a high school senior from Queens, says he's gotten a threatening letter from a private investigator accusing him of selling stolen goods, and thinks it sounds a lot like the legal threats Apple made against the kid who found/stole the iPhone 4 test unit back in April.
Lam - like many iPhone users - was tired of waiting for the white iPhone 4. But unlike many iPhone users in the US, he speaks fluent Mandarin and has contacts at Apple's manufacturer in China. Working through "a guy from a few years back that had somewhat of a relationship with folks in Foxconn," Lam was able to get what he claims are authentic iPhone 4 white screens, digitizers, bezels, home buttons and case backs.

If you though the iPad was sleek and light as a feather, just wait until you get a load of the second-generation iPad. If reports published today prove accurate, the next iPad to reach consumers could be pretty incredible. In fact, traders and financial analysts on Wall Street are already reacting to the news that Apple is said to be considering the use of carbon fiber to produce the housing for its popular line of iDevices, but most likely for the iPad.
To be clear, this isn't a rumor or an un-sourced speculation. The suggestion comes directly from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Freshly published images indicate Apple's model for an iPad shell composed of "layered fiber-in-matrix type material, such as CFRP," which, in reality, is carbon fiber-reinforced polymer. The most noticeable consequence of making the move to carbon fiber, of course, would be an even lighter iPad, as the presently utilized aluminum encasing would be gone.

On Thursday, Apple released to developers a brand new version of the Golden Master iOS firmware for the iDevices (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch). Bumped up to 4.2.1 Build 8C148, we may now be closer than ever to the final version delivering fixes to the glitches, bugs, and other shortcomings with which many of us are familiar.
From Network World:

The new GM has reportedly been released to address bugs and errors found in previous builds. Earlier on Thursday, MacRumors published an e-mail sent out by VoIP developer Toktumi--responsible for calling app Line2--that warns customers not to upgrade to the latest

Internet Explorer not stirring your cup of Windows Phone 7 tea correctly? Well, you now have an alternative in the form of a new browser that's arrived in the Marketplace: Browser+. It does seem to have been built on IE code rather than its own framework, so don't get your hopes up for Chrome to Phone on WP7 any time soon. Anyhow, the new app's been given a test drive by a couple of sites, who note it integrates a view of your current tabs and a Google search box right into the general web view, providing a slightly more accessible interface than the default option, while also throwing in a private surfing mode for the paranoid among us. A few crashes and bugs have been spotted in Browser+ so far, but hey, it's cheap and it at least gives us hope for a less monotheistic browsing experience. See it in video action after the break.

This one's strictly in the "just for fun" category of stat comparisons, but the guys over at TUAW decided to do a little headcount of the sheer number of games Apple's App Store has available for consumption. Then, just for fun, they decided to compare that to some publicly available stats on how many games the last 25 years of consoles, both the sort that plug into your teevee and the handheld type, have churned out. Of course, the caveats are plentiful, as there are a lot of duplicates and Lite versions floating about in the App Store (as well as multi-platform games among the consoles), but the general point that iOS has a lot of games on its books is made pretty clearly. Now if anyone wants to document how many Flash games there are for browser-based consumption, we look forward to reading your results in 2013.
