Joe Mailer wanted to download an iTunes movie recently and his Apple TV told him it would take two hours. When he switched his DNS resolver settings, the download time dropped to less than 20 seconds. Apparently, iTunes content is served by Akamai which uses geolocation based on the IP address of the DNS request to determine which server should provide his content. When you use Google or Open DNS to resolve the Apple domain name, all the requests to Akamai appear to be coming from the same location and they're all directed to the same server pool, overloading that pool and causing the slow downloads. The solution: Be wary of using Google or Open DNS when downloading iTunes files or similar large files. Use your own ISP's DNS servers instead or run your own resolving DNS server.

Seems it didn't take long to hack the Windows Phone 7 marketplace. Quoting WPCentral: 'For developers, the weakness in Microsoft's DRM for Windows Phone 7 applications has been well known for quite some time, and there have been calls for Microsoft to address these concerns ... Since then, a "white hat" developer has provided WPCentral with a proof-of-concept program that can successfully pull any application from the Marketplace, remove the security and deploy to an unlocked Windows Phone with literally a push of a button. Alternatively, you could just save the cracked XAP file to your hard drive. Neither the app nor the methodology is public, and it will NOT be released ... It is important to note that this was all done within six hours by one developer.

Skype has updated its iPhone app to include video calling over Wi-Fi and 3G. With Skype 3.0 you can make two-way video calls to other iPhone 4 and 4th gen iPod Touch users. iOS users without front-facing cameras can still receive video, but they can only transmit audio for obvious reasons. You can also use Skype in landscape mode as well as portrait mode with this version.
Making video calls to Mac and PC desktop users is now possible with this updated version as well. You can now stay connected in a more personal way even if you are at either end of the country. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that data charges...

Sooner or later, George Hotz - the hacker known in our circles as Geohot - will release another jailbreak for iOS devices. While there's little else to report on Geohot's jailbreak front, there is growing talk about what it will be called. And it may very well be Geohot himself who indirectly spilled the beans.
Eric Calouro, editor and CEO of Erictric Media, reported Wednesday evening that Rubyra1n may the name of Geohot's next release. Why the speculation? Well, it turns out that the domain "rubyra1n.com’ was registered with the same information found on the WHOIS page as Geohot’s other well-known domains. So could the name brought us the blackra1n and limera1n jailbreak methods be readying Rubyra1n? That's the buzz at the moment.
The prospective arrival of "Rubyra1n" would have likely remained the most talked about news in our community today if not for the Twitter update earlier on Thursday... [

We'll openly admit we never knew what African Blackwood was until Gresso started applying the stuff to its line of extremely luxurious cellphone mods, but now we can't imagine a new product from the Russian company without the 200-year old timber making an appearance. And sure enough, the Gresso iPad's rear is composed almost entirely of Dalbergia melanoxylon, broken up only by the insertion of an 18-karat gold Apple logo. Strangely, in spite of its extravagant constituent materials, this design is a very restrained, dare we say, classy, affair. It goes on sale on New Year's Eve at an unannounced price, but you know what they say: if you have to ask or you have to work for a living, you probably can't afford it.

[Steven Troughton-Smith] figured out how to push signed firmware through to the iPod Nano 6g. This is accomplished by modifying iRecovery to recognize the device on the USB after forcing a recovery mode reboot. So no, this doesn’t mean that it has been cracked since it checks the firmware you push and reboots if it’s not approved. But if you can figure out how to craft a custom image that passes the check you can call yourself a jailbreak author.

Apple is looking for a few good iOS developers to help expand the company's cloud-based offerings. This much can be derived from the two new job postings on Apple's website. The first posting says Apple "is hiring outstanding operations engineers to deliver and manage the next generation of hosted infrastructure serving Apple products and services." The other opening indicates that Apple needs "experienced software engineers to work on distributed computing for data with non-trivial properties, and efficient online services for data access."
Similar to past job postings at Apple that vaguely suggested the possibility of future products (like the iPad) and new services, there are, indeed, times when job listings effectively point to the mysterious projects and other top-secret efforts underway in the tech labs of Cupertino. Naturally, these latest postings (which quietly went live just before the Christmas holiday and are finally getting noticed)...

Not only is Eldar Murtazin the venerable editor-in-chief of the Mobile Review blog, he is also widely regarded as a reliable fountain of insider knowledge in the tech world. Given his reputation, many are taking his latest report as a confirmation of Apple's plans for the iPad 2 - at least with regard to one particular new feature. According to Murtazin, the second generation iPad is definitely getting a USB port.
Quote:
Talked with colleague which working with some ODM vendors connected with Apple. He is research guy. According to his sources iPad2 will have usb port.
The present lack of a USB port has been an habitual thorn in the side of many gadget gurus and tablet aficionados.

Apps, apps, apps! Everywhere you look, more apps. Both Android and Windows Phone 7 have reportedly crossed a couple of round number milestones recently, giving us a decent idea of the maturity gap between the two. Microsoft's brand new OS with an old OS' name has rounded the 5,000 available apps corner -- that's according to two sources keeping track of what's on offer in the Marketplace -- while AndroLib's latest data indicates Android's crossed the 200,000 threshold when it comes to apps and games taken together. We're cautious on taking either of these numbers as hard truth, particularly since AndroLib was reporting 100,000 Android apps when there were only 70,000 -- but they do provide rough estimates as to where each platform is in terms of quantity, if not quality. Now, where do you think each will be this time in 2011?

Apple has supposedly elevated its 1st quarter iPhone shipment goals by a substantial margin according to reports surfacing Monday morning. Initial estimates for 1st quarter 2011 iPhone shipments fell into the range of 19 million units. That already-teeming number has allegedly been upped by Apple to approximately 21 million.
Naturally, this situation begs the obvious question: What could possibly be driving the ballooning shipment goals of Apple for its popular iPhone, especially since the "newness" of the iPhone 4 has already worn thin? According to DigiTimes, the raised estimate reportedly includes somewhere between five and six million CDMA iPhones, fueling a long-standing rumor that need not be addressed further without any concrete evidence yet again.

The sixth generation iPod nano has been hacked by developer and hacker James Whelton. James was able to hack the nano by bypassing its cache comparison and installing a Springboard hack. For now, this only allows you to delete one of the pre-installed apps and create a blank spot. This may not seem like much, but it does demonstrate that the nano can be altered. James is quick to point out, however, that the nano has not been jailbroken, “I do not have root access over the device. I did not “install” an app. I figured out how to remove them and insert a blank space into the springboard.”
Mr. Whelton also found references to possible additions to the nano: “Next is the discovery in some of the device’s plists of reference to support of Movies, TV Shows, Apps, Games, vCards, Calendar events and so on

News via http://modmyi.com/forums/ipad-news/7...ma-models.html
Although the second generation iPad isn't likely to debut for several more months, a steady stream of reports about the iPad 2 continues to keep the forthcoming Apple tablet refresh in the forefront of tech news. On Tuesday, word broke that the iPad 2 will join Wi-Fi-only and UMTS models with a new (Verizon-compatible) CDMA version.
From DigiTimes:
Quote:
Apple is expected to release three versions of iPad 2, supporting either or a combination of Wi-Fi, UMTS and CDMA, for 2011 with mass production to start as early as the later half of January. Apple will ship about 500,000-530,000 units to channels in January with shipment ratio of Wi-Fi, UMTS and CDMA models at 3:4:3

We reported a couple weeks ago about an investigation showing that apps transmit personal data to advertisers despite Apple's rules against doing so. Now Apple has been hit with a lawsuit that accuses them, along with the developers of some popular apps, of revealing users' information without their consent. If the suit is granted class action status, millions of people could receive money from the companies.
