Google's last Android-centric event, Google I/O in the middle of last year, treated us to a pair of delectable demos that may now finally be turning into mobile realities. One was a web client for the Android Market with OTA installations -- you just browse to an app you want to install while on your desktop and choose to push it to your Android device -- and the other was a cloud-based music backup and streaming service. The latter has since picked up the moniker of Google Music in subsequent rumors, and today both are receiving some speculative support for a launch at tomorrow's Honeycomb event. Android and Me has an insider source claiming the web-based Android Market is finally ready to roll out, whereas BusinessWeek reports Andy Rubin is heading up Google's digital music team and also has software ready for release, potentially at some point this month. Given the importance of both new additions, it's highly logical for Google to at least announce and show them off once more tomorrow. Then we can get back to waiting for the next Android update.

Symbian is no longer the most-shipped mobile platform, with Android finally knocking Nokia's OS out of the number one position. Manufacturers shipped 32.9 million Android devices in Q4 of last year, compared to 31 million Symbian devices, according to Canalys. That gives Google a 33% share of the global mobile market, over 31% for Nokia's Symbian. 'It's gone from nowhere to number one in the space of two years, which is pretty impressive,' Canalys analyst Pete Cunningham said, predicting Android would double its growth rate this year

Figures by analyst Localytics have suggested that some 26 per cent of mobile apps are used only once following their download.
The survey, covering iPhone, Android, Blackberry and Windows Phone 7, found that the number of one-use apps had fluctuated between 22 and 28 per cent over the last year.
While this does mean a good 70 per cent of apps are used repeatedly, if accurate Localytics' figures present a new context for another recent survey which found that the average iOS device owner had downloaded some 60 apps.

The highly delayed and much coveted white version of the iPhone 4 should arrive in the not too distant future, according to Pocket Gamer.
Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has also given the first explanation for the delay – apparently the white paint was allowing too much light to leak into the camera, resulting in washed out pictures. Wozniak even admitted to buying OEM Chinese case parts online and trying the white case himself to test the results.
Retail listings suggest the white SKU could arrive at the end of the month.
The last we heard Apple had stated that the white version of the iPhone 4 would be launched some time in 2011. Prior to that the device had expected to ship alongside the debut of the black machine last June, and then at some point later in 2010.

Sony intends to spread the PlayStation Suite much further than Android phones - even iOS and Windows are part of the plan, and they're made by the enemy.
The exciting potential is for PlayStation Suite games to be offered far and wide, rather than be restricted like produce for App Store and Windows Phone 7.
"There are a variety of operating systems, but we're focusing first on Android," said Sony Computer Entertainment chief Kaz Hirai, in a conference translated by Andriasang.
"There's also Windows, iOS and so forth, but we don't have the resources to make it compatible with everything from the start.
"We're not ruling out PSS even on products like Sony Internet TV Powered by Google (Google TV) if adoption rate increases, or if it will help push adoption greatly."
"We have a completely open stance with carriers and handset makers," he added.
To begin with, PlayStation Suite will deliver classic PSone games to Android phone users. But in the future, Sony wants the Suite to evolve into a hardware-neutral development environment where brand new games and content are made.
Through a PlayStation Certified seal of approval, Sony will pin-point which devices work properly with PlayStation Suite. And with a QA system, Sony hopes to avoid the Suite becoming a swamp of questionable quality.
Final Fantasy VII on Android would tempt.
The announcement of PlayStation Suite came at Sony's PlayStation Meeting last week. The big news there was the unveiling of Next Generation Portable (aka PSP2). Eurogamer's blanket coverage of the event has been cobbled together in one handy place.

A researcher at North Carolina State University has discovered yet another Android Browser exploit that affects the new Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) and previous versions. Slashdot recently covered a previous browser exploit that affected all versions of the Android Browser, but was patched in 2.3. Xuxian Jiang writes 'our finding here is that the patch contained in Android 2.3 is not an ultimate fix and can still be bypassed. We have a proof-of-concept exploit with a stock Nexus S phone and are able to successfully exploit the vulnerability to steal potentially personal information from the phone.' The exploit is capable of reading and writing files from an Android's sdcard or system partition as well as uploading user data over the internet.

A couple of new job listings on Apple's website are firming up rumors that Apple will be including so-called "e-wallet" capabilities using Near Field Communications (NFC) technology on upcoming iOS devices. The positions - for a Hardware Test Engineer and a Manager of Global Payment Platforms - indicate that development on both the technical and business aspects is near completion.
As Nick reported on Tuesday, there's growing evidence that Apple is working on a PayPal-like service that would use radio-frequency identifier (RFID) chips built into iOS devices to allow them to act as electronic wallets: you would just wave your iPhone at a reader, and money would be immediately transferred out of...

Thought Honeycomb was just for tablets? Well, it's not! Sure, tablets might be Google's main thrust with the release, but we've been able to dig up enough evidence in the preview SDK's emulator released yesterday to suggest that these guys are still keeping their eyes on the smartphone prize.
Here's how it works: the emulator can be set to load at an arbitrary screen resolution. By default, that's WXGA, 1280 x 768 -- perfect for tablets, but obviously a wee bit large for even the biggest smartphones. Well, it turns out that setting the emulator to WVGA (like you might find on a modern mid- to high-end smartphone) triggers a moderately different shell UI that lacks most of the whiz-bang home screen stuff Google's shown on the Honeycomb tablets. In fact, the default launcher crashes out entirely, which means you need to install a replacement (Launcher Pro works nicely) just to play around.
Once you get in, it's pretty raw, but you immediately notice that the emulator's got some traces of smartphone support. Notably, the status bar reverts to a more smartphone-friendly form, albeit one with pre-Gingerbread background coloration and incorrectly-inverted font colors. The lock screen (pictured above) is back to its old form, not the webOS-esque circular lock in the Honeycomb tablet UI. The browser -- which has been completely revamped in Honeycomb -- works, though without visible tabs; Google might be thinking that they'd take up too much real estate on a screen this small.
Again, you can't glean much here, but it's interesting primarily because the emulator knows to revert to a smartphone UI layout at the lower resolution -- a possible sign that Honeycomb will be a true dual-mode, dual-purpose platform from day one. And even if it isn't, it looks like they're setting themselves up for a two-UI strategy down the road.

Sony's US president Jack Tretton has explained some of the thinking behind the PlayStation Suite - the new software offering for Android smartphones and tablets, revealed yesterday at the PlayStation Meeting in Tokyo.
He admitted that it was important to acknowledge the massive growth and success in the smartphone market with devices from Google and Apple, and Sony would be wasting the PlayStation heritage if it were to ignore the market entirely.
"We've always been about, what is the market? What is the opportunity? Seize the opportunity and differentiate yourself," Tretton told Engadget.
"To sit there and stick your head in the sand and say, 'smartphones are irrelevant, there are no other gaming mediums,' I think would be foolish, and it would be a disadvantage for us, because we have all these great games. We have this great gaming heritage."
"If you truly believe in your brand and you truly believe in your technology, expose yourself to as many consumers as possible, so hopefully PlayStation Suite introduces people to the PlayStation brand and ultimately they follow the breadcrumbs back to NGP and to our other devices. We've got this huge library of PlayStation One games that are tremendous games, especially when compared to a lot of the other stuff you're seeing on smartphones. That already sets the bar very, very, high."
By releasing original PlayStation games on a PlayStation Store - accessible on multiple handsets - Sony hopes to raise the bar for gaming experiences, despite the age of the software.
"The PSOne games are already state-of-the-art compared to what a number of consumers get with that type of investment on a smartphone," offered Tretton. "It's gonna set a level that'll force other games to measure themselves against, in terms of what they can economically justify.
"I would stack a lot of those PSOne experiences very fairly against what people are spending good money on [with smartphone titles], and I think it is a buyer beware market because there's no standard. Anybody puts anything out they want out on a smartphone and you don't know what you get until you buy it. I hope with the credibility of the PlayStation Suite, there'll be an expectation that we can execute against in terms of quality."
And the PlayStation Suite could be another entry level for budding design talent, according to Tretton, following opportunities though the PlayStation Network and PlayStation Minis.
"Now with things like the PlayStation Network and smaller digital games, you've really got a great breeding ground for development and we've reaped great dividends, and not only great content but great developers that have gone on to do bigger and better games, and we never would've gotten the opportunity to know them if it wasn't for things like Minis and PlayStation Network. So I think PlayStation Suite expands that even more."

Digitimes is reporting on the possibility of the iPhone 5 touting a dual-core processor. Not much of a surprise, considering that the new Android devices will be sporting such chips, and I don't see Apple falling short for competition. This means better gaming and video experiences, as well as a nice speed increase. We should see this migrate over well to the iPad 2, so we can expect to see upgrades on both devices.
With strong competition coming from Google devices, and other smartphones, Apple sounds like they are ready to up the competition once again. The iPhone 5 is expected to be released in the USA about June or July, (same months that iPhone 4 debuted last year), however it seems as though most of this ETA is mostly based on rumors, but then again, the iPhone 5 is a rumor all together.
Can we expect dual-core processors? Probably. Can we expect the iPhone 5 this year?

The description in Software Update may only say that it brings a "number of important stability and performance improvements," but Apple's just-released iTunes 10.1.2 update also adds another fairly important feature: support for the Verizon iPhone 4. That detail is tucked away in the "before you install" document included when you download iTunes from Apple's website (rather than Software Update), and actually only refers to the "iPhone 4 (CDMA model)," which you can read into what you will.

Sony has announced PlayStation Suite, a new service which will deliver classic PSone content to Android smartphone devices.
Speaking at a press event in Tokyo, Sony boss Kaz Hirai promised that the service, which launches later this year, will bring "Legendary original PlayStation content" to mobiles. No specific titles were announced, but a snowboarding game was briefly demoed, with a virtual D-pad and buttons clearly displayed on the phone screen.
A service called PlayStation Certified will help developers with testing and quality assurance.
Hirai promised a "hardware-neutral game framework" that enables "PlayStation-quality" content to made for all kinds of mobile hardware.
"We envision PlayStation Suite as an initiative that is essential to the world of portable entertainment," he insisted.

Although gloves customized for use with touchscreen devices are nothing new, there's something quite "magical" about what could become the most popular high tactile gloves on the market. At least, that's what Apple is probably hoping for.
According to our friends at Patently Apple, the folks in Cupertino have won a patent for a new "Magic Glove System," the design for which also surfaced this week at the US Patent and Trademark Office. If you're curious as to how these gloves will improve upon those currently available on the market, that much isn't yet clear. Although since the word "magic" is involved, these must be superior to the competition, right?

Microsoft just dropped a few tidbits of knowledge on us regarding Windows Phone 7's performance in the marketplace so far. Here's what we've got:
'Early research' says 93 percent of WP7 customers are 'satisfied' and 90 percent would recommend the platform to others. We don't know details about the research, though -- number of customers polled, time frame, so on.
Average of 100 new apps in the Marketplace per day, and over 6,500 total are available right now.
Most importantly, "over 2 million" licenses have been sold to OEMs around the world.
What does that tell us? Well, let's get the elephant in the room out of the way: the iPhone 4 sold 3 million units in a little under a month after its launch, so Microsoft clearly has plenty of room to catch up -- but that comes as no surprise to us, analysts, or Microsoft itself. Furthermore, selling a license to an OEM isn't the same as selling a phone to a customer, since many of these manufactured devices are sitting on store shelves; it's unclear exactly how many WP7 devices are actually in users' pockets right now, but the number is certainly less than "over 2 million."
Microsoft's earnings call is tomorrow where we expect to get more detail on the platform's performance, but the company is saying today that it sees plenty of reasons to be "bullish about the foundation for long-term success" here -- and considering that they simply can't afford to fail in the mobile game, we hope they're right.

So we've just installed Google's first public-access preview of its tablet-focused Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system, an early build of the platform's SDK that features "non-final" code and APIs; it's intended primarily for developers who want to get a head start on making their tablet app dreams come true, but naturally, we needed to install it and take it for a test drive ourselves. Here are our quick observations:
Like Android SDK emulators before it, Honeycomb's is extremely slow -- nearly to the point of uselessness in this case. We'll give them a mulligan since this is a preview build, but seriously, we wouldn't recommend installing this unless you enjoy pulling your hair out.
There appears to be some sort of orientation bug that prevents us from going landscape, which is what we really wanted. Sorry about that! We've shot the video sideways and rotated all of our images; if we're able to figure it out or a newer build is released with orientation properly working, we'll update.
The browser looks great -- specifically the UI, which is going to make desktop browser users feel right at home perhaps more than any other tablet browsing experience to date. As with the rest of the emulator, it was too slow to really use -- and it kept crashing on us -- but we're digging the look.
The system for adding and managing widgets is a joy to use -- it makes your entire desktop accessible from a single screen, and we like the amount of detail you can preview for each widget before deciding whether to use it and where to place it.
In general, the window animations and screen transitions seem cool, but none were smooth or fast enough in the emulator to know for sure. Jury's still out until this gets faster or we're using Honeycomb on actual tablets.
We're not in love with the dim, squashed segmented display that Google is using for the time in the lower right; we're hoping there are plenty of alternative fonts available.
Since the emulator doesn't provide a "Google experience" build with access to the Android Market, Gmail, or other "branded" Google apps, we weren't able to deep-dive on how real-world applications are going to look on the platform -- but with any luck, Motorola's Xoom should be shipping within a few weeks. GameStop has submitted a revised version of its Kongregate Arcade app to the Android Market, following the forced removal of the original iteration.
Google had pulled the Arcade from its mobile app store due to stipulations about the hosting of rival download shops on Market.
While Kongregate had disputed the "bizarre" removal, claiming Arcade did constitute an App Store, it has now altered the free game hub in an attempt to satisfy Google.
Kongregate Arcade now runs all its games within a browser, storing games in that browser's cache rather than saving them as their own entities on the phone.
The app is currently available on Android Market, though whether it remains there depends on Google's decision.

Apple still isn't offering much of a hint about an iOS 4.3 release date -- other than a busier than usual beta schedule -- but it looks like we could now be one step closer to a general roll out. What appears to be the first app that takes advantage of some iOS 4.3-specific features has now garnered Apple's approval and turned up in the App Store, which would seem to suggest that there's no more major changes or bugs that need to be ironed out (though that can certainly always change). The app itself is Matthew Gallagher's StreamToMe, which runs $2.99 and now incorporates the AirPlay video support that has come to apps in the a latest revision of the OS -- hit up the source link below to check it out for yourself.

Last week Google took a page from Apple's book and pulled the Arcade by Kongregate app from the Android Market for violating its terms of service. In particular, the part that forbids distributing 'any Product whose primary purpose is to facilitate the distribution of Products outside of the Market.' As Kongregate's Jim Greer explained to Joystiq, the app is essentially a custom web browser that loads in a Flash game from the mobile version of Kongregate. Plus, it will cache the game so you can play offline. And this may be the feature that got it yanked, speculates Ryan Kim at GigaOm.
