Nothing says truthiness quite like anonymous Chinese sources telling next generation iPad secrets to a Japanese blog lacking any notable successes on the professional rumor mongering circuit. Nevertheless, the Apple rumor sites have jumped all over the story like a Bay Area cop on prototype thief. So here's the dirt, which certainly seems plausible in its specificity: a 3-mm reduction in bezel width, same 9.7-inch display size, and flattening of the back allowing it to rest wobble-free on a desktop. Mac Otakara also explains that there's a "wide-range speaker" covered with "metal mesh" (that's their render above) occupying the cut-out we saw at the bottom of those supposed next-generation iPad cases. The overall unit is said to measure 239 x 186 mm compared to the current iPad's 242.8 x 189.7 mm footprint. Suspiciously, the site was unable to reliably confirm the existence of front of rear facing cameras but does claim that the new iPads will begin shipping from factories in January -- timing that aligns nicely with previous rumors. After the break you'll find another purported iPad 2 case with yet another render of the speaker grill design.

Football management games have always been about the great players of the present - the Ronaldos, Rooneys and Messis of this world.
Now, that's all changed. Championship Manager developer Beautiful Game Studios has created a football management game set in the seventies, introducing great players of the past - the Brookings, Keegans and Bradys of this world.
iPhone, iPod touch and iPad game Championship Manager Legends: 1970's is available to download now from the Apple app store. It costs ÂŁ1.79, and screenshots are below.
"Filled with nostalgia and history, you take on managing a team back when football was all about Spangles and sheepskin jackets," reads the official blurb. "A sporting decade that produced some memorable names, which for the first time in Champ Man history you can control and bring to life.
"The 1970's was an era of fantastic footballers including Johan Cruyff, Kenny Dalglish and Luis Arconada. Now for the first time in Championship Manager you can manage these legendary players and their classic teams," said BGS boss Roy Meredith.
"We've also packed the game with authentic news stories from the decade so you feel fully immersed as you play through from 1970/71 – 1979/80."
The launch of Championship Manager Legends is yet another result of Beautiful Game Studios' commitment to iPhone and online development.
In October it launched its first specialised iPhone and iPod touch Championship Manager game, ChampMan 11.

News via http://www.scummvm.org/news/20101219/
The last ScummVM release in this year just has been released. This is a maintenance release and is aimed to fix several important bugs since 1.2.0.
Particularly we added Hungarian and Brazilian translations of the GUI, and made bugfixes to the Cruise, Groovie and Lure engines.
ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables shipped with the games, allowing you to play them on systems for which they were never designed!
ScummVM supports many adventure games, including LucasArts SCUMM games (such as Monkey Island 1-3, Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max, ...), many of Sierra's AGI and SCI games (such as King's Quest 1-6, Space Quest 1-5, ...), Discworld 1 and 2, Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2, Beneath A Steel Sky, Lure of the Temptress, Broken Sword 1 and 2, Flight of the Amazon Queen, Gobliiins 1-3, The Legend of Kyrandia 1-3, many of Humongous Entertainment's children's SCUMM games (including Freddi Fish and Putt Putt games) and many more.
You can find a full list with details on which games are supported and how well on the compatibility page. ScummVM is continually improving, so check back often. Among the systems on which you can play those games are Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, Dreamcast, PocketPC, PalmOS, AmigaOS, BeOS, OS/2, PSP, PS2, SymbianOS and many more...
For a more comprehensive changelog for the latest experimental SVN code, see:
http://scummvm.svn.sourceforge.net/v...mmvm/?view=log
1.2.1 (2010-12-19)
General
- Add Hungarian translation.
- Add Brazilian Portuguese translation.
Cruise:
- Fixed a problem with Raoul appearing when examining the Book
Groovie:
- Fixed a regression that made the Russian version of T7G crash.
Lure:
- Fixed several NPC movement bugs

Microsoft has decided to finally dish out some sales figures for its new Windows Phone 7 platform, but alas, these are not the sales figures we are looking for. Instead of giving us the juicy number of actual devices sold to end users, the Redmond crew has provided a neatly rounded figure of 1.5 million sales to mobile operators and retailers. That tells us that the mobile industry is cautiously buying into Microsoft's new OS, and it'd be foolish not to, but it doesn't really educate us on the relative success of the platform's launch -- 1.5 million units is a tiny, tiny number when you consider the platform launched on 10 devices on over 60 carriers in over 30 countries. All that Microsoft's Achim Berg would say is that early sales have been "in line" with expectations.

In case you missed the story this past week, a big victory was delivered to the jailbreak community in Spain. While the news has nothing to directly do with Apple or its products, the news stills serves to advance jailbreaking overall - a reality most in our community would celebrate regardless. In this particular instance, however, a court in Barcelona ruled that - despite the best arguments to the contrary by Sony - owners of the PlayStation 3 should not be prohibited from jailbreaking their consoles.
Quote:
Part of the reason the court ruled against Sony, according various Spanish language blogs, is because Sony disabled the “OtherOS” functionality earlier this year. As many readers are likely aware, the “OtherOS” feature allowed you

There has been some news about the 4.2.1 jailbreak lately, but the unlock has been missing in action for some time. However, we got a little ray of light about ultrasn0w on Twitter from Egyptian baseband hacker Sherif Hashim, who worked on the 3.1.3 unlock. He's still keeping it on the down low - English-only speakers would have missed it - but he's indicated the unlock should be ready in about a month.
Sherif Hashim found an exploitable baseband crash that could bring an unlock for basebands 05.14.02 and 02.10.04 back in November. Very little has been heard since then, and nothing definitive as to the timing on a new ultrasn0w for iOS 4.1 and 4.2. One impatient unlocker sent Hashim a tweet in Arabic, saying he was going away for military service on January 16 and asking if the unlock would be ready by then.

Apps are sending your personal data to online trackers in violation of Apple's privacy rules. That's the conclusion of a Wall Street Journal investigation, which determined that a number of popular apps - such as Pandora and MySpace - transmit device and demographic data to advertisers without first asking the user for permission.
The Wall Street Journal tested 101 apps for iPhone and Android and found that 56 of them transmitted unique device identifiers (UDIDs) to a flock of advertisers without asking or even informing the app user. 47 of the evaluated apps send location data and five (including Pandora) transmit your personal details such as age and gender. Apple says that they vet apps before approving them on the App Store, but the Journal found that at least one - Pumpkin Maker - had managed to skirt the rules.

It's oftentimes hard to gauge the proliferation of electronic devices into everyday life while looking at them from our little bubble of early adopter enthusiasm. A much better vantage point for these things can be provided from the arms of government, among the most change-resistant places on any planet, and American legislators are letting us know that tablets, not the children, are our future. Texas Representative Henry Cuellar recently took the House of Representatives floor with an iPad in tow, which broke with the chamber's etiquette if not its rules. He's not alone, however, in hoping that the House dispenses with its Omega Man-style prejudice against electronics and permits their widespread use by Representatives. If nothing else, distributing bills of law electronically should make a nice dent in the "multimillion" dollar budget currently set aside annually for printing. Let's make it happen, guys.

Microsoft offer free console hit to help boost sales for new mobile platform.
US consumers who purchase any new Windows Phone 7 will receive a free Xbox 360 game.
Microsoft launched the promotion to help drive sales for its new mobile operating system, which launched last month. So far, sales have been slow.
As part of the deal, gamers can choose from one of four titles: Kinectimals, Kinect Joy Ride, Fable III or Halo: Reach.
The offer is available with any Windows Phone 7 device, with Microsoft’s official webpage highlighting the Samsung Focus and HTC HD7.
It also points US consumers towards the Buy One Get One Free promotions currently running at AT&T and T-Mobile.

The Wall Street Journal has come out with an article where they examine 101 popular smartphone apps and show that 56 of them transmit various types of information including unique phone IDs, age, gender, postal codes, and location to ad companies. The article also including responses from infringing app makers and talks about the pressure that some developers feel to share even more information, like Max Binshtok, creator of the DailyHoroscope for Android, who has been encouraged by ad-network executives to transmit users' locations.

Future US soldiers may have government-issue iPhones to go with their boots and rifles. If a new modernization plan is successful, soldiers will have their phones and service plans paid for by the Army, allowing them to communicate securely and use military apps for training as well as live intelligence data. However, securing these phones is a challenge, and Apple and Google so far have been unwilling to open up API access to their security functions.
Lieutenant General Michael Vane, the director of the Army Capabilities Integration Center (ARCIC) suggests that the Army would issue smartphones just like any other piece of equipment a soldier receives.

Don't worry, nothing to be concerned about if you have a jailbroken iDevice. Your should be safe to connect and sync if you please, just don't update your firmware by "Accident". There has been no word of any issues blocking DFU mode restores, at this point in time.
Apple has released iTunes 10.1.1, an updated to iTunes 10.1 which was released in mid-November, of which now includes some bug fixes for the NVIDIA GeForce 9400 and 9600 video card on macs, not to mention a fix for those that were having issues syncing music videos.

Never underestimate the power of Dreamcast to live on long past its intended expiration date (which, if you ask Sega, would have been around September 2007). The final flagship console from the Haus of Sonic is survived by a multitude of emulators propagating across a multitude of platforms... and well, here's another. Drk||Raziel has posted some videos showcasing the work in progress of nullDCe for Android (on what we make out to be a AT&T Samsung Captivate). The footage ranges from buggy (Soul Calibur) to pretty smooth (Crazy Taxi), but again, no one's calling this a finished product.

Football Manager 2011 has arrived on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.
It costs ÂŁ6.99 - almost quadruple the (lowered) price of Championship Manager 2011 for iPhone.
But Football Manager 2011 has "unrivalled realism" and is, according to the blurb, "the most in-depth football management game in the App Store".
Features of note are three active countries per season; customisable player roles; more formations; in-game tutorial and a built-in real-world stadium finder.
Sports Interactive also claims to have paid special attention to the quirks of Apple's machinery to tailor its game accordingly, i.e., the same thing rival Beautiful Game Studios said about Championship Manager 2011.
But which is better?

Apple says its Game Center is more than just a social gaming network for iOS users - it's an increasingly powerful game discovery tool.
The service offers connected features including leaderboards and achievements. However, with tens of thousands of games available on the App Store, Game Center is emerging as a way for people to discover the good ones.
"Game Center is on everybody's device, and so many games are integrating it now. It's a great way for people to see what their friends are playing, and discover new games that way," says Apple's VP of product marketing Greg Joswiak.
He was talking to ME at a London briefing this week, showcasing the latest crop of iOS games.
In September, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said that more than 1.5 billion games and entertainment apps had been downloaded from the App Store, showing how games have become an important focus for the company.
Games showed off this week included LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4, Jenga, Cut The Rope, Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner and Rage HD, along with upcoming title Gears.
The selection reinforced the point that Apple is keen to highlight games that make use of key iOS hardware features, including the gyroscope, camera and A4 processor.
Joswiak also said value remains important to iOS users. Rage HD currently costs ÂŁ1.19 on the App Store, compared to the ÂŁ25-ÂŁ30 RRP for PSP and DS titles.
However, this week has also shown that iOS gamers aren't just looking for cheap deals: $5.99 title Infinity Blade grossed more than $1.6 million on the store in a matter of days.

News via http://www.aep-emu.de/PNphpBB2-file-...c-t-16010.html
Android Emulator is a Android Emulator available for Windows, Mac OS and Linux.
Quote:
Android Emulator v1.5 is released. Android Emulator is a QEMU-based application that provides a virtual ARM mobile device on which you can run your Android applications. It runs a full Android system stack, down to the kernel level, that includes a set of preinstalled applications (such as the dialer) that you can access from your applications. You can choose what version of the Android system you want to run in the emulator by configuring AVDs, and you can also customize the mobile device skin and key mappings. When launching the emulator and at runtime, you can use a variety of commands and options to control the its behaviors.
The Android emulator mimics all of the hardware and software features of a typical mobile device, except that it can not receive or place actual phone calls. It provides a variety of navigation and control keys, which you can "press" using your mouse or keyboard to generate events for your application. It also provides a screen in which your application is displayed, together with any other Android applications running.
To let you model and test your application more easily, the emulator supports Android Virtual Device (AVD) configurations. AVDs let you specify the Android platform that you want to run on the emulator, as well as the hardware options and emulator skin files tht you want to use. Once your application is running on the emulator, it can use the services of the Android platform to invoke other applications, access the network, play audio and video, store and retrieve data, notify the user, and render graphical transitions and themes.
The emulator also includes a variety of debug capabilities, such as a console from which you can log kernel output, simulate application interrupts (such as arriving SMS messages or phone calls), and simulate latency effects and dropouts on the data channel.

To understand POWDER, you should first understand roguelikes. "Roguelike" is a term applied to a wide variety of games which share a common inspiration from the game Rogue. A non-exhaustive list of such games would be: ADOM, Nethack, Crawl, Diablo (I & II), Moria, and Angband. My apologies to the many excellent roguelikes I didn't list. What characterizes these games? The exact specifications are a matter of debate - indeed, I may receive hate mail for including Diablo - but I shall try to write a few:
Tactical play. The unit of action is based on the individual adventurer. The game is not twitch oriented (like Quake, rewarding reflexes & well trained actions) nor is it strategy oriented (like Civilizations or Warcraft, requiring working on the large picture)
Based in Hack and Slash. A roguelike isn't primarily about plot development or telling a story. It is about killing things and acquiring treasure.
Random games. A roguelike is a dungeon crawler where no two games are the same. The maps are different, the items are different, there are no guaranteed win paths.
Permadeath. You die, that is it. No restoring a savegame. Good roguelikes delete your save game after loading them. This is compensated by the replayability of the game.
Complex interactions of properties. While the commands for a roguelike are simple, the potential interactions are not. My favourite example is equipping a silver ring as a weapon in order to damage a creature vulnerable to silver, but not one's other weapons. [Editor: This matches the Hack branch of the roguelike tree, not the Angband branch]
Steam rolling monsters. If a critter is in your way, and weak, you shouldn't even notice it is there.
For more information about roguelikes there is the Rogue Basin, a Wiki documenting this genre, and the Temple of the Roguelike, a newsite tracking developments in the field.
Having defined Roguelike, POWDER is easy to describe: A Roguelike designed for the Gameboy Advance and Nintendo DS and Now Apple Iphone
Just in time for the new, high res, iPhones, POWDER's tiles have caught up to the previous, low res, iPhones. The 12x12 Akoi Meexx tiles have been hand smoothed for a better landscape experience.
My old file server died. Fortunately, I was already in the process of migrating to a new one, so it really couldn't have been better timing. Unfortunately, my attempt to restart the PSP toolchain failed. I'll have to give this another try later, but this release is way too delayed already.
Note the iPhone version, as usual, won't show up right away. First, because even with immediate submission there is a delay for approval. Second, because one reason this release kept being delayed was a real frustrating bug where the keyboard wasn't showing up half the time. I think I fixed it, hence this release, but I want to do some more testing on my commute.
When the iPhone version does hit the light of day, I hope players on that platform will appreciate that you can now email your character dumps. This provides a way to get a record of your win without resorting to pen and pencil.
The delete key should work on Macs. (Konstantin Stupnik)
Typos in the animate forest description fixed. (Paul Nguyen, Kender)
You can no longer petrify or stone to flesh quest items. (Lorenzo Batallones)
Items that fall in a hole will not be revealed up on the next level's map. (Kender)
Zapping a wand of invisibility at yourself when you are already invisible from a permament source no longer reports "You are invisible." (Kender)
No longer falsely get system shock if a creature you possessed, but released when it was polymorphed, is finally slain. (Mental Mouse)
The Regenerate spell now works for creatures with No Regeneration, as was intended. (Mental Mouse)
Flesh golems can once more regenerate. (They lost this in the no-regen sweep) (Mental Mouse)
Giant Spiders have defences better fitting their explevel. (Mental Mouse)
The earth hammer is now made from stone as you'd expect. (Kender)
The spell Summon Daemon now spells Daemon like the rest of POWDER. (Mental Mouse)
Typo fixed in Golden Tridude description. (Mental Mouse)
Clarify cave troll description. (Metnal Mouse)
s/byte/sting/ for scorpion description. (Mental Mouse)
Clarify butcher skill description. (Mental Mouse)
Water elementals no longer leave corpse.
Eaten intrinsicly poisonous corpses now has a significantly shorter timeout. (Kender)
Attacks which deal multiple types of damage in the same hit will have damage reduction applied to each of the types, rather than only to the first type. (Mental Mouse)
Vampire bats will no longer chase players which they aren't interested in. (Kender)
Option to email character dumps on the iPhone to get them out of the black box.
Searching due to intrinsics will put Searching on the status line, and multiple manual searches will report Seached x10.
Improved the Akoi Meexx 12x12 tiles, for less ugly pixels when in landscape mode on the iPhone.
Makefiles for Linux have $(LDFLAGS) added.
The torches in the Lomaka tiles have been fixed to show up in the correct hand. (Martin Rittweger)
The Wish command now includes the ability to take on a monster's form and stats, so you can play as a monster if you wish. (Robert Barber)
On level up, the number of Piety points you have in each class is displayed beside the class name so you can better judge which class to pick. (Matthew Wyatt)

In what increasingly appears to be a case of mistaken identity, a Dutch developer has threatened to release the source code of the SHAtter exploit, depriving the jailbreak community of a valuable tool. After the developer of TwitPanic, @iHaz3, had his site brought down apparently by a DDOS attack, he threatened to release the SHAtter source as some kind of revenge, but has since held off on carrying out the threat.
The story can be traced following @iHaz3's Twitter feed. TwitPanic.com was crashed by what the developer believed was a DDOS attack set up by @ih8sn0w after he and @iHaz3 had "issues." @iHaz3 then tweeted "TwitPanic.com is attacked by a organized DOSS hit......next week SHATTer will be posted on twitter."

Next update to Spark 360 should bring one of the most requested features – message notifications. The feature is mostly complete; currently being tested.
I’m also working on another Android app; its purpose should be fairly obvious from the following (very much alpha) screenshots.
Spark 360 should be updated some time within the next week; I don’t have a date (or a name, for that matter) for the other app.
