Do you ever wish for an easier way to show your uninitiated friends what you mean when you say Android is growing? Well, here's the video for you: a Google-produced map of the world that throbs with Android activations over time, highlighted by some truly eye-opening flourishes in the immediate aftermath of marquee handset launches. The Google guys have even given us handy countdown timers -- "Droid launch in 3, 2, 1..." -- and broken things down by continent for easier viewing. Only thing missing is a soundtrack, so just have your Tron: Legacy OST loaded up and ready before jumping past the break.

There's not exactly any shortage of ways to mount your iPhone or iPod touch to your bike, but there's decidedly fewer options that actually turn your iOS device into a full-fledged cycling computer that's able to replace those from the likes of Garmin. This new iBike Dash device promises to do just that, though. It not only houses your device is a protective, waterproof shell, but it includes an ANT+ speed sensor and is compatible with other ANT+ devices so you can measure heart rate and cadence. It also has room for an extra rechargeable battery to extend your run time, and it naturally makes use of a free app that takes advantage of your iPhone's GPS capabilities (no built-in GPS here to help out iPod touch users). Of course, all that means this one also costs considerably more than a simple bike mount -- look for the basic model to set you back $199, while the deluxe package (including cadence and HR monitors along with an extra battery and charger) runs $329.

Apple and music labels are reportedly in discussions to raise the audio quality of of the songs they sell to 24-bit. The move could see digital downloads that surpass CD quality, which is recorded at 16 bits at a sample rate of 44.1kHz. It would also provide Apple and the music labels with an opportunity to 'upgrade' people's music collections, raising extra revenue in the process. The big question is whether anyone would even notice the difference between 16-bit and 24-bit files on a portable player, especially with the low-quality earbuds supplied by Apple and other manufacturers. Labels such as Linn Records already sell 'studio master' versions of albums in 24-bit FLAC format, but these are targeted at high-end audio buffs with equipment of a high enough caliber to accentuate the improvement in quality."http://apple.slashdot.org/story/11/0...usic-Downloads

No word on whether Steve Jobs will present the new tablet
The official iPad 2 unveiling will take place on March 2, it has been confirmed.
There is good evidence to suggest the iPad 2 will be lighter and thinner, with a front-facing camera and a Qualcomm chip.
Thanks to Apple fanatics around the globe we know about host of features which iPad 2 mighthave, ranging from retina display to an ultra-fast ‘thunderbolt’ data transfer port.
A Reuters source has also rubbished claims the forthcoming tablet was experiencing production problems. The Apple insider told the media agency that the Taiwanese research company was wrong. The iPad 2 is expected to reach retail by April.
Apple have released a teaser image with date and the tagline “come see what 2011 will be the year of” – an upfront response to industry theory that the new iPad will lose sales to other tablets due for launch this year.
Apple have sold around 15 million iPads to date.
The launch will take place at the Yerba Center for the Arts in San Francisco at 10:00am Pacific time.

RUMOUR WATCH: Claims that the second coming of Apple tabletry is at hand
One online news source has claimed that Apple will reveal its iPad 2 in just one week's time.
All Things Digital says it has confirmation from "multiple sources" that the US tech form is preparing a March 2nd gathering in San Francisco.
There's even talk that Steve Jobs himself will be at hand, despite currently being on a leave of absence due to health issues.
As for the device itself, it's all a guessing game for now but the safe bets point to integrated front and rear cameras and some sort of improved display, though many reckon Apple has abandoned plans to incorporate an iPhone 4 style retina display into the machine.
There's also been plenty of talk about the possible ditching of the front facing 'Home' button, with Apple said to be keen on ditching all physical controls for its future iOS product ranges.

9to5 Mac has gotten their hands on what is purported to be a case for the long awaited iPad 2. The dimensions of the case indicate that the next iPad will be incredibly thin. This silicon case has most of the design features that have been rumored for some time now, but also leaves room for a mystery or two. If this new case design proves to be accurate, then it could point to something entirely new for the Apple tablet.
This new case has room for all the standard features on the current iPad model and a has room for few more as well. The 30-pin dock connector is right where it should be, as is the headphone jack and power button. The volume buttons are also in their normal place, but that’s where the similarities end.
At the bottom of the case there’s a large cutout for what’s assumed to be the speaker. It’s widely believed that Apple wants to improve the quality of the... [Read More]

Citing supplier checks, a Taiwanese research firm is claiming that the iPad 2 launch may be delayed to June due to production problems. Bloomberg is quoting Yuanta Securities analysts as saying that design changes that Apple requested are leading to issues in manufacturing at Foxconn, which saw its parent company's stock drop to its lowest price since December after the report.
According to other reports out of the Asian supply chain, production of the new iPad began at the start of 2011 and was halted for the Chinese New Year holiday this month. Analysts Vincent Chen and Allison Chen told Bloomberg that Apple... [Read More]

It's the perfect rumor: the officially delayed and frequently tattled white iPhone 4 has reemerged as the white iPhone 5 riding a horned stallion through virgin rumor fields. According to the Economic Daily News, the previously unheard of white iPhone 5 will feature a touch panel supplied exclusively by Wintek. If true, then the white iPhone 4, officially scheduled for a spring 2011 launch, should be available just prior to the launch of the next generation white iPhone 5, anticipated for a summer launch in keeping with Apple's typical launch cycle. Not exactly ideal, but hey, it's only the first of many related rumors to come.

We didn't have much luck using the oStylus as a paint brush, but even the creator confessed that it was never intended for such chores. Thankfully, the Nomad Brush was concocted specifically for those chores. What you're looking at above is a paint brush that's designed for use with capacitive screens, and it could very well spark a modern day renaissance... or something of the sort. The brush is topped with capacitive fibers that the iPhone, Galaxy Tab and iPad (among other tablets and phones) can recognize, enabling you artsy folk to express yourselves even when it's impractical to tote around a suitcase full of watercolors. Head on past the break for an (admittedly impressive) video, and pop the source link to hand over $24 in exchange for a shipping label. Just promise us you'll keep it away from any actual paint buckets, okay?

We found out yesterday that Motorola's Xoom would be shippingsans Flash support on Verizon Wireless, and while Big Red claimed that an update would be doled out this spring, the folks at Adobe are pointing to a far more specific time frame. In a new post over at the Flash Platform Blog, Adobe has confirmed that "Flash Player 10.2 [will be] pre-installed on some tablets and as an OTA download on others within a few weeks of Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) devices becoming available, the first of which is expected to be the Motorola Xoom." We're guessing that the company's going public with a statement like this to fend off fears that the Xoom may be waiting an eternity for Flash, in essence removing a bit of fear from hesitant early adopters. Either way, it's excellent news for those eying a Honeycomb tablet of any flavor, and we're going to take the liberty of taking "a few weeks" to mean "a fortnight." Cool, Adobe?

You've heard that it was en route, and you've seen the preview. Now, it's time to enter the wild, wacky world of Android 3.0 for yourself. Honeycomb's SDK is now available for all developers to download, with the API's being deemed final and able to withstand new apps that will target the fresh platform. We'd bother spilling the beans on the added features, but we know you've already torn your left click button off in a frantic race to the source link. Simmer down, son -- the URL ain't going anywhere.

In the wake of Nokia's announcement that it will be cheerfully throwing its existing developer community under a bus by not offering Qt for Windows Phone, a project to implement Qt on Android has announced its initial alpha release. Necessitas project lead Bogdan Vatra writes, 'I had a dream that one day, I'll be able to deploy existing Qt software on any Android platform. I had a dream that one day, all Qt applications will use system wide shared Qt libraries. I had a dream that one day, all Qt applications once compiled and deployed to one android platform, will run on any other newer android platform and will last for years without any recompilation. I had a dream that one day, I'll be able to create, manage, compile debug and deploy Qt apps using a first class citizen IDE. Now, those dreams become reality.' The Necessitas wiki offers some documentation on Qt for Android. A is also available."http://mobile.slashdot.org/story/11/...droid-Released

This year's Mobile World Congress was the stage for dozens of new tablets. Unfortunately, Android Honeycomb tablets lacked presence; amongst the top Android tablets demonstrated at the show, only the Motorola Xoom was running Honeycomb, whereas others were running either Android 2.3 or older versions. Moreover, most of the top apps announced for the OS were not new, just reworked. Gigaom may believethat Honeycomb tablets will be iPad's true competition, but progress has been slow, in my opinion. Honeycomb was born too early, primarily out pressure from the iPad getting a one year headstart in the tablet market.http://mobile.slashdot.org/story/11/...Born-Too-Early

When your tablet needs a windowed UI, has it crossed some undrawn, implied boundary that makes it too complex for the kinds of casual tasks you'd want to accomplish on a tablet? Hard to say, but the mobile developers at Ixonos took to MWC last week to showcase a windowed build of Android on top of a tablet developed by Aava -- so at the very least, we know it's possible. The system is built atop Froyo and allows apps to continue running in the background -- they don't suspend, which means you can, say, play a video while you're off composing messages. The company also demonstrated the software on a dual-screen 7-inch tablet, allowing apps to be launched on either screen and transferred between them -- all seemingly without any customizations needed to individual apps, which is going to be key for a system like this to gain any market traction.

We won't lie: we did feel a little put out when our pal Jon Rubinstein told us that webOS 2.0 wouldn't be coming to the Palm Pre Plus -- something about the older hardware not having the necessary "oomph" to handle the new OS. But perhaps all hope is not lost! According to a rep from O2 Germany (as espied on the company's support forums) HP will make with the new operating system at some point in the near future -- just not as an over-the-air update. When the time comes (indeed, if the time comes) you'll need to download it from HP's website not your computer and install it via USB. And maybe that will be the point when we discover the joys of running a new OS on an underpowered handset for ourselves!

Minecraft creator Markus Persson has revealed that he is to bring the building and survival indie game to iPhone and iPad.
GamaSutra obtained confirmation of the new version, with Persson claiming that mobile Minecraft will only contain features and updates which "make sense" for touch-based controls.
The digitally-distributed game has sold over 1 million copies since its soft launch in 2009, and currently remains at beta stage.
One-man creator Persson was able to found his own studio, Mojang Specifications, as a result of Minecraft's initial success - achieved entirely without advertising or a publisher.
