So, you want to be a webOS developer, huh? That's great kid, we're excited for you, but there's a catch: Palm won't be handing out an actual SDK to most people until the end of Summer. In a post just published on the Palm Developer Network Blog, reps from the company say that although they've been cranking away on getting their full SDK in shipshape (the version given out to current devs is apparently pretty rough), they won't have anything for a broader audience anytime soon. In their words:
With the Pre now in customers' hands and reports of webOS hacks in the news, we know that you are more anxious than ever to get access to the SDK and start developing for webOS.
We've been working very hard on the SDK and are eager to open access on a wider scale, but the software and the developer services to support it just aren't ready yet.
This should come as a bit of a blow to developers hoping to get cracking on Pre software, and will unquestionably turn those who can't bear the wait towards the fully stocked iPhone or Android platforms. However, Palm does say that they'll be opening the program up a bit wider, stating in the post that they plan to crank the number of devs with the early SDK in their hands up from "hundreds to thousands" over the next few weeks. Apparently, that's part of process the company is beginning to ration out access, building to a full release.
Another bit of puzzling wordsmithing in this post comes in the form of the company's stance on homebrew and DIY "experiments" (their words) which have come to light in the past couple of weeks. So says Palm:
As on any popular platform, we recognize that some developers will experiment in ways that cross official boundaries, but we believe that our formal offerings – and community efforts built around those offerings – will provide the best experience for the vast majority of webOS developers and users.
So while it's not exactly a keep-off-the-grass statement, it certainly reads vaguely as to whether or not the company will lock out jailbreakers hoping to dive deeper into webOS. Further confusing the matter? Palm has just released the Linux source code used to compile the Pre's firmware, making the possibility of cooked / custom ROMs a very serious reality, and obviously opening the floor to a lot of said experimentation. Mixed messages? Yes. Our word to Palm right now? Put every effort into getting that SDK out, or you're at risk of quickly burning through all the good will you've just engendered.
Update: We've added some info above which reflects Palm's statement that it will be considerably widening its pool of developers over the next few weeks with access to the early SDK.

Undeniably, Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch have become major players in the mobile gaming market. It seems like every developer under the sun is working on iPhone / iPod game of some kind. There are lots of games out there, and a rising number of them are pretty good, but the iPhone / iPod has thus far been devoid of another major aspect of the game industry: Third-party peripherals. Until now, that is. With the release of iPhone 3.0 firmware, Apple now mentions "Third-party Game Accessories" on the iPod Touch software update page.
The iPod and iPhone already have a huge accessories market, and we're sure that there are plenty of companies looking to carve a new niche with gaming accessories. There are no details regarding what sorts of accessories are on the way, but we'd say some more traditional input devices are a pretty safe bet.
We'll tell you one thing, we can't wait to see what Nyko has cooking.

With the iPhone 3.0 firmware, Apple upped the max number of app pages on the iPhone from 9 to 11. Theoretically, that increased the number of apps the iPhone could support to 180. Theoretically.
iPhone site appadvice has both rationalized and confirmed that even though you can't see more than 180 apps in the iPhone's menus, the iPhone can support as many apps as it can store. How? Spotlight. It's common sense when you think about it. You can search basically everything on the phone with Spotlight, even content not on the menu. So of course you can search additional apps.
Though let us be the first to say it: If you have more than 180 apps on your iPhone, it's time to do some housecleaning.

Palm just posted an update on their developer blog telling developers—all of whom are anxious to make apps for the Pre and start making money—that the SDK won't be out until late summer.
On the one hand, it's good news that they're going to get an SDK available in three or four months from launch. The iPhone took an entire year to get an SDK available. The bad news is you have to wait three or four months to get Palm Pre apps that aren't from people with closer relationships to Palm.
But, they're going to "accelerate" their early access program, letting in more developers into their inner circle. That's good news, since it means an increasing amount of apps between now and the general release of the SDK.

We knew this was coming, but it's good to know that hackers can still get into the iPhone OS so easily: PwnageTool for Mac OS X is now available for iPhone OS 3.0. Here are the details. [Updated]
• If you already have your iPhone jailbroken and unlocked, don't try to update your smartypanties phone to iPhone OS 3.0. PwnageTool won't unlock your iPhone. You have to wait until Ultrasnow is available for this.
• If you don't need the unlock but want to upgrade to iPhone OS 3.0, go ahead. After upgrading, jailbreak your iPhone with PwnageTool 3.0, and keep using Cydia and your non-official iPhone apps.
• If you have an iPhone 3GS, this won't work for you, so don't even try it.
And like always, use it at your own risk. Update: I downloaded and tried it. It works.

The queues may have seemed smaller than this time last year, but mobile operator O2 has stated that the new Apple iPhone 3GS is way ahead of where its predecessor was at the same stage in its first day on sale.
Some stores have already sold out of the device, though O2 states that fresh stock will be rolled out to it network tomorrow.
“The iPhone 3GS has got off to an incredible start with news reaching us that by lunchtime we'd sold more iPhone 3GS handsets than we sold iPhone 3G devices on launch day last year,” an O2 spokesperson told Pocket Lint.
“Sales are still going strong and we expect to have sold 50 per cent more iPhone 3GS handsets than last year's launch by the close of business today.”
Footfall at O2 shops is apparently ten times above the normal level, and traffic on its website has seen a 150 per cent increase.
It was also revealed that the black iPhone 3GS SKU is outselling its white cousin by a ratio of 3:1.

70 per cent of UK consumers would entertain it, if the terms were right, says study.
The finding was released at the Camerjam conference in association with EverySingleOfOneUs, which held its inaugural Mobile Campaign of the Year award at the event. AKQA and Nike won the top award for the PhotoiD campaign. Jonathan MacDonald, CEO of EverySingleOneOfUs, said: "Akqa won the award due to their close attention to user experience, in terms of a highly relevant and transparent offering that was easy to interact with, whilst showing a clear incentive of value."
The conference also quoted figures from an IAB-backed study that said the mobile ad market is worth nerarly ÂŁ30m in the UK.
Not bad, but still a mere 0.16 per cent of the total ad market.

Such has been the success of the Firemint’s chart-topping iPhone app Flight Control that clones were an inevitability – fortunately Imangi’s new Harbor Master looks to be a lot more than just a by-the-numbers copy.
Available now for 59p, Harbor Control takes many of the aspects that made Flight Control such a huge success but wraps it all up in a nautical setting.
We’ve already had a quick chance to take a look at Imangi’s title and at first glance it appears to be a very polished alternative to Firemint’s classic.
Though the gameplay, and indeed the visuals, are fundamentally the same, subtle differences lead to a quite different game experience. As well as docking boats, players must also leave time for them to unload their cargo and then direct them to safety before other ships can dock at port.
As with its rival, Harbor Master also allows users to create an online profile, upload scores and net in-game achievements.
It looks great though, and for 59p it’s hard to see this one going wrong.

What a difference 18 months makes, eh? The relative short line for today's iPhone 3G S launch at Apple's flagship Regent Street store in London could be attributed to any number of factors: the economy, the steep cost of upgrade for iPhone 3G owners, or the fact that Apple allowed for advanced iPhone 3G S orders with home delivery. Or maybe people just aren't willing to wait in line for a bump in speed, improved graphics, and video recording. We wouldn't call it apathy but the iPhone halo doesn't seem as shiny beneath a spotlight now shared with Android and the new Pre. Regardless, the iPhone 3G S is now on sale in the UK and a few more European countries with North America up next after a few degrees of the Earth's rotation.
Update: According to O2, sales for the 3G S have already surpassed numbers for the iPhone 3G during last year's launch. So it's possible that the pre-orders were in full effect here. However, you have to remember that Europe and O2 in the UK in particular had very serious problems meeting demand at the time of the iPhone 3G launch last year. So this statement likely says more about inventory management than it does the demand of the 3G S vs the 3G.

Well that was fast. Orange Boutique in Paris, France did a midnight release of the iPhone 3G S, and the gang at Rapid Repair were there to pick one up and subsequently rip their new toy to shreds. There isn't much here in terms of analysis of parts yet, it's more so just a quick and dirty job to get it out to the world, but hey, if you're into watching someone rip apart brand new, expensive gadgetry, we've got just the gallery for you.
Update: They've identified the chipset as the SoC S5PC100 from Samsung and thus confirm an ARM Cortex A8 running at 600 MHz (operates at up to 833MHz though) and the ability to record 720p video and handle real-time video conferencing should Apple choose to go in that direction (iPhone 3G S records VGA only). PowerVR SGX graphics and 256MB of RAM too as expected. S5PC100 block diagram after the break.

Nokia's Ovi Store duplicates one of N-Gage's main lots in life -- to serve as an over-the-air distribution channel of paid and trial apps -- and in the long term, it certainly seems to make sense that Espoo would be looking to merge the two initiatives into one. The company hasn't announced anything to the effect just yet (and even if it did, it'd have to find some creative way to duplicate N-Gage's social aspect), but it's now taken one small step by porting game trials over to the Ovi Store. If you want the full game you'll still need to buy it using the N-Gage app, so the maddening duality of Nokia's software strategy still basically continues as-is for the time being -- let's just hope this is a promising sign of things to come.

T-Mobile has finally confirmed what the FCC (and its own computers) already told us: the BlackBerry-Bold-inspired HTC Snap, a 3G, Windows Mobile 6.1 QWERTY+trackball followup to the original Dash, is arriving on T-Mobile as a successor to the original Dash.
Since we've played with the Snap (and liked it—warning, April Fools link), and the handset is rumored to be unusually cheap, the two items of interest here are pricing and date of availability. Despite this, T-Mobile neglected to include either of these things in their release, so we'll have to wait, or take the previously leaked July 1st date as fact.

One of the things we love to see is homebrewers using the skills they’ve honed with devkitPro toolchains to enter the commercial market. The most recent programmer to take the next step is Lacey who you might know if you visit the Blitzed dev channels on a regular basis.
His company, Tin Man Games, has just released their first iPhone/iPod Touch title so why not help him make his mark in the industry by grabbing Frootrees from the iTunes store now? It looks like a great little game and the ÂŁ0.59/$0.99 price point is an absolute steal.
We hope to see many more homebrewers follow in Lacey’s footsteps and wish him good luck.

It could be the fact that the iPhone has been available for two years, or the fact that the iPhone is available in 3000 countries to the Palm Pre's one, but Google Trends shows much more interest in Apple's device.
You do see a pretty decent spike there at the end of the graph, probably beefed up by the Pre launch. What could also explain the disparity, beyond the fact that Apple has a bigger marketing machine than Palm, is the probability that most "normal" people haven't even heard of the Pre yet.
We take that for granted, but your mom or your neighbor is an order of magnitude more likely to be aware of the latest iPhone than this new "Pre" thing.

Augmented reality (AR) has mostly been limited to research labs and the occasional cool webcam trick, but it's slowly becoming more plausible as a means for new forms of portable games. We saw one such title -- Sony's Invizimals for PSP -- at E3 and were wowed by its insertion of CG objects into "reality" using the system's camera add-on. Now a tech demo from Georgia Tech Augmented Environments Lab and the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD-Atlanta) gives us a glimpse at even more possibilities for these games on devices such as iPhone, PSP and Nintendo DSi.
Titled ARhrrr (geddit?), the game is a zombie shooter in which a flat tabletop map produces a cityscape seen on the handheld (in this case a prototype device from Nvidia). The city's populated with zombies, the handheld can be moved around at any angle and the overlayed city rotates accordingly. The idea behind the demo is that players are controlling a helicopter flying above the outbreak and can shoot zombies by tapping the screen. It's limited, but nonetheless really cool.
We've popped the demo footage after the break to rock your non-augmented reality. It's pretty impressive. So, what implimentations of AR on handhelds would you like to see?
