Cydia (the 3rd party, open source AppStore alternative) is incredibly popular, even more so in 2.x with the vast improvements saurik (Jay Freeman) has made to it.
We've spent the last few days revamping our stats handling for the MMi Cydia repo. Just for kicks, feel free to check them out at apt.modmyrepo.com. They even look cool on your iPhone.

T-Mobile USA has changed the IP address in their system for the T-Zones service. For anyone on 1.1.4 and below you will have to SSH in and manually change your settings (see below) or upgrade to 2.0+ and install the NEW T-Zones Hack provided by Big Boss in Cydia. For anyone on 2.0+ who has the previous hack installed you will need to update to the new one.
You must subscribe to the $5.99 T-Zones service for the T-Zones hack to work.
"For 1.1.x users that really don’t want to upgrade, you can fix proxy.pac yourself but editing the file /var/preferences/proxy.pac and changing “10.0.0.0″ to “25.0.0.0."

Earlier this week some great looking macro photos take of various object circulated around the internet. The man responsible for these photos, Daniel Forsythe, has released instructions for all of you that are interested in doing the same thing.
This hardware modification isn't for the feint of heart. It involves taking apart your iPhone, removing the camera, scrapping out some glue that holds the camera lens in place, and then re-focusing the camera by rotating the lens.
While this does take a bit of delicacy and patience the results are quite good and extremely useful if you use your iPhone primarily for grabbing shots of bar codes or notes or anything else that you need some close-up detail.

Well at least its your fault if you haven't updated to firmware version 2.0.2 according to AT&T.
There has been a lot of recent speculation and even a lawsuit about the reception issues with the 3g iPhone. First the 3g chip was blamed for the reception issues and then later refuted in a study. Now an internal source at AT&T has shed some light on the issue providing details about what the 2.0.2 update did and how it is intended to fix reception problems.
Basically the 2.0.2 update controls the UTMS power control in the iPhone. To get service, each iPhone requires power from the service providers transmitter and that power is requested by the iPhone itself. Pre firmware version 2.0.2 the iPhone 3g was asking for too much power from the cell towers. When a lot of iPhones asked for too much power all at once the cell towers would run out of power, leaving you with no reception.
I'd like to have some cell phone service so if you have a 3g iPhone (in denver ) do me a favor. Update to 2.0.2 using PwnageTool for mac or QuickPwn for windows or WinPwn 2.5 when it is released (we hear very soon).

"The Omnia (Latin for "all") in fact has it all: a WQVGA haptic touch screen, quad band unlocked GSM, Euro-only 3G, GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, FM radio, DivX certification, a 5 megapixel camera, 624MHz CPU, 8 or 16 gigs of storage and an SDHC microSD card slot. For those of us in the US, the Euro-only 3G takes "all" down one notch. The Omnia works fine on both T-Mobile and AT&T in the US, but you're stuck with EDGE for data. Really, it's hard to imagine that Samsung's flagship PDA phone leaves out triband HSDPA. No carrier offers the Omnia in the US; instead it's sold by online importers for approximately $700 (the 16 gig model sells for approximately $60 more than the 8 gig model). Prices may come down when the phone isn't so new and hot."

"Microsoft Mobile Communications Group Manager Scott Rockfeld was on Fox Business chatting up quite a lot of Windows Mobile devices. The context of the discussion is basically 'competitors to the iPhone,' which is a little aggravating because, let's face it, the iPhone and Windows Mobile aren't always going for the same demographic. Some of the smartphones shown off: HTC Diamond, HTC Touch Pro, and the BlackJack II."

"KeyToss mobile is extremely customizable, and similar in concept to iGoogle for mobile, but it's got a lot of cool and unique features, including: the ability to search using dozens of different search tools (e.g., Google, Amazon, IMDb, UPS Package Tracking, Acronym Finder, Dictionary.com, Wikipedia) from one search bar; local searches on Google Local, Yelp, and yellowpages.com based on your stored location; RSS and Atom newsfeeds with mobile-optimized links; localized links (so you don't have to enter your location when you click on Fandango, for example); the ability to organize modules on multiple pages; and file transfers between PC and phone. You can also get sports scores for your favorite (US-based) teams, weather, stock quotes, etc. And you can manage your site from your desktop at www.keytoss.com."
Mobile data is great to have, but while some sites either scale nicely or offer a seperate mobile version, others can crash your browser as you see "heavy" entry pages. A mobile portal is a convenient way to be able to pull frequently requested data into one location. Speaking of location, KeyToss will access location-aware data without requiring GPS so you won't have to re-enter a zipcode on some sites. WapReview compared it very favorably to iGoogle. You can check out a desktop representation or visit the site directly on your smartphone or other mobile device at http://m.keytoss.com. For those that use a mobile portal, does KeyToss offer enough unique features for you to switch?

August 30th, 2008, 21:08 Posted By: wraggster
"Such a string of mishaps and missteps might throw another electronics company into crisis. But of course, Apple Inc. isn't just another electronics company. Even as iPhone griping rages online, it looks like Apple's sterling reputation will emerge untarnished. Baba Shiv, a professor of marketing at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, compares Apple's fan base to Harley-Davidson motorcycle riders who pass over arguably higher-quality Japanese bikes.Shiv said Apple's fans play down negative information to explain their relationship to the brand - and justify spending more for products that may not be better than the competition's. Once that loyalty is formed, "the transgression has to be so egregious for someone to completely change the narrative," Shiv said. 'If something like this had happened to Microsoft, the long-term impact would be much more for Microsoft than for Apple.'"
I'm just curious what you all think of this article. Apple and it's beloved iPhone have certainly had their share of mishaps lately. They've had some real problems with MobileMe, 3G, the App store, syncing, freezing, security and so on and yet it seems that no matter what they do, there's a strong loyal crowd that will defend them to the hilt. Yet when Microsoft has issues or flaws with just about anything, forums around the web seem to rip them apart. So after reading the article, do you agree that "Apple's sterling reputation will emerge untarnished?" Do you think there's a bias towards Apple sometimes? Are Apple and MS really on playing fields that are that different or is it just easier to pick on one more than the other?

Update 30/08/2008
Back into business after my vacations .
Enjoy!!
Changelog:
- Battery metter
- Now runs on background. The app will keep running on background after the first start up so the locking is almost automatic. You can place a shortcut on \Windows\Startup so that your device locks even when startup (more secure). To allow freeing memory the app will respond to Hibernate message performing a full close, this will happend only if the device is not locked when resources are requested.
- Some bugs solved like two instances startup or graphical issues when voice mail or MMS where present (i forget to attach the png's for this last two cases X-D).
- Included German and Swedish translations. (thanks to aldur and T-dome).

Hi all,
this is mainly an auto locking program which utilizes the Windows Locking for partial locking (phone related keys are active)
or complete locking (no keys are active).
It can be considered as an add-on to other programs which provide the User Interface, an 'In Call Locker'
with some goodies as mentioned later on which may or not depend on whether the device is locked (with any program that uses
the Windows locking).
The locking can be activated at the following events:
1. After a specified period of idle time (no screen tapping or touching the keyboard).
2. After the device has waken up.
3. During a call ("In-Call Locking" Partial or Full).

Just a few days after the Dev Team released its jailbreak tool for the 2.0.2 firmware to Mac users, WinPwn 2.5 and the QuickPwn Tool for Mac have both appeared at about the same time, offering the ability to QuickPwn the latest iPhone and iPod Touch firmwares. In other words, not only can you jailbreak your iPhone or iPod and enjoy sweet, sweet Cydia and Installer action, but you also don't have to go through the irritating process of building a custom firmware and carrying out a lengthy restore in iTunes.

Hi guys,
I have developed an interface to xcas, a free Computer Algebra System, for Windows Mobile.
Let's have a look at its features (text and screenshots have been taken from http://pocketcas.com, by appointment of ... myself):
Solving advanced mathematical problems made easy
PocketCAS is a free interface to the open-source Computer Algebra System giac/xcas.
xcas enables you to quickly solve complex algebraic problems, e.g. symbolic and numeric integration and derivation of non-trivial functions, solving differential equations etc. It has also a huge support for problems of linear algebra, like solving linear equation systems, multiplying and inverting matrices, finding eigenvalues (and eigenvectors, of course) and much more. If you do statistics or number theory, you will like xcas' great functionality in those areas, too!
Built-in TeX output
PocketCAS has the option to automatically use the output of xcas to generate beautiful formula images using mimeTeX. Just enter an expression and you will get the result in the same formatting you would find in a mathematical textbook!
For example, other Computer Algebra Systems would output the following result to the command integrate(sin(x)*cos(x)):
(sin(x))^2/2
With PocketCAS, you will see the formula as a real image (image removed due to xda-dev's limitation to 4 images).
(this is VGA output, on your PDA it will look smaller and even smoother!)
Simple input method for faster solutions
PocketCAS contains a fully-customizable, easy to use mathematical keyboard for quick input of most mathematical functions. You can even assign images to displayed on a button rather than mere text!
Therefore, PocketCAS is as simple to use as a pocket calculator, but provides you with the functionality of a full-blown CAS - in your pocket, wherever you take your PDA with you!
Missing a function or a macro? Simply add it to the keyboard which is stored in a human-editable XML-file!

Since we started the first Android Developer Challenge late last year, we all have been eager to see who the winners of $275,000 and $100,000 would be. All 50 applications that emerged from Round 1 of ADC I showed great promise, and these teams have been working intensely for the past several months to polish their apps for the final round.
Similar to round 1 we sent laptops preconfigured with the judging environment, emulator, and all entries to each of our seven judges. In this round, each judge reviewed all 50 applications, took collaborative notes and gave initial scores. Then, all judges met together over conference calls to discuss and debate these applications, finally coming to consensus on which applications should receive $275,000 and which should receive $100,000.
We're pleased to present all of the winners and finalists in our detailed ADC gallery. Peruse and enjoy — there are awesome applications and unique uses of the Android platform. We would like to congratulate the winners and thank all the entrants for their hard work!
