Hey, what's one more leaked OEM/ODM image of the iPod nano 4G between friends. While usually we'd be highly suspect of an image like this from Alibaba.com (peddlers of the Mac G6), the stars have certainly aligned around the next-generation iPod nano form factor show beneath the "Screen Guard for iPod Nano 4th Gen." Besides, it's the first clean render we've seen from below. Five more days and we'll know for sure.

As the root of our name implies, desktop browsers aren't really our thing in Engadget-land. Still, we're pretty sure that you've managed to learn about Google's new Chrome browser even without our assistance. However, when we hear Google's co-founder, Sergey Brin discussing Chrome on Android, well, we're all in. Even though neither has been released out of beta yet, Brin said that the Webkit-based Chrome browser is expected to soon supplant the Webkit-based browser in Android. "Probably a subsequent version of Android is going to pick up a lot of the Chrome stack," Brin said before adding, "My guess is we'll have 'Chrome-like' or something similar," when asked about the brand name. While we have lingering doubts about the likely stability of the initial 1.0 Android OS release, version 2.0 with Chrome is likely to be killer in every sense of the word to Symbian Nokia, Microsoft, and Apple. Of course, we'll be first in line for the HTC Dream regardless.

When last.fm released their application for the App Store, many people were disappointed. There was no searching, there was no scrobbling, and you could only play your recommendations. But someone apparently got their hands on the newest version of their software for iPhone. It adds the ability to search, play music from other people's profiles, love, or hate, songs, and much more.

Remember when MMS finally reached Jailbroken iPhones via SwirlyMMS back in December adding MMS receiving support in March? Great news! SwirlyMMS is nearly ready for iPhones running 2.x firmware!
From SwirlyMMS:
"Dear Swirly Users,
We know that many of you are wondering what is going on with the so much sought after release for firmware 2.x. We have been working really hard lately and today we were able to send and receive the first MMSs between different devices running firmware 2.x on iPhone 3G and 2G!
Of course, you are all wondering when will this be made public? It is hard to say, and you all know how bad I am at making guesstimates... There are a few issues left, not major ones, but still issues, until we can make an official 1.2 release for the 2.x firmware. So lets say maybe two weeks from now. Maybe, maybe...
Stay tuned!
Greetings from the SwirlySpace team,

The JoyPod, rumored to be the first venture into iPhone game pads by a major player in the accessory industry (Belkin), turns out to be a fake. The original article came from a site called TouchArcade, and it looks like they've taken us all for a late April Fools. After sleuthing just a tad, we received this email from Belkin:
Quote:
Hi Cody,
Thanks for the email! The "JoyPod" is as much of a surprise to you as it is to us! The "JoyPod" is not a Belkin product,

Apple/AT&T customer William Gillis was unhappy with the performance of his iPhone 3G. So he filed a lawsuit. But what's unique in this case is that the lawsuit isn't complaining just that the iPhone 3G is underperforming, but that the iPhone 3G is underperforming because it's been consciously oversold in a plot by AT&T and Apple.

Music Week is reporting that when Snow Patrol debuts their new album A Hundred Million Suns late next month, according to their label's product manager, it'll launch on iTunes with Apple's next (presumably) killer app for the iPhone and iPod touch (Remote being the first): an interactive album application that'll deliver lyrics, artwork, behind-the-music photos and other bonus content.

It appears the software giant expects to launch an applications store called Skymarket this fall for its Windows Mobile platform, if a recent job posting spotted by Long Zheng at Istartedsomething.com is accurate. According to the ad posted Sunday on Computerjob.com, the Skymarket senior product manager will head a team that will "drive the launch of a v1 marketplace service for Windows Mobile."
There is a link to the job posting in the article if you are interested. It is great to see Microsoft doing this, but it seems once again it took Apple to do it first and show that it really can help drive the market. Any bets MS has something along the lines of a MobileME in the works, but one that works correctly of course.

The ScummVM Team has released a new version of ScummVM for tons of consoles and Operating Systems,
Heres the release details:
We can call it a tremendous development. Half a year since 0.11.1 passed pretty quickly, and we are pleased to announce the release of 0.12.0!
This new version of ScummVM adds support for 5 completely new games. The games that now run smoothly on many more platforms than was initially intended are: The Legend of Kyrandia: Book Two: Hand of Fate, The Legend of Kyrandia: Book Three: Malcolm's Revenge, Lost in Time, The Bizarre Adventures of Woodruff and the Schnibble and Drascula: The Vampire Strikes Back.
The number of supported platforms grew as well. The PS2 port has been revived, and the GameCube and Wii are now supported too. Take your Wiimote and make your beloved adventure game protagonist run around the screen .
For those new to ScummVM heres a description:
ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables shipped with the games, allowing you to play them on systems for which they were never designed!
Some of the adventures ScummVM supports include Adventure Soft's Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2; Revolution's Beneath A Steel Sky, Broken Sword 1 and Broken Sword 2; Flight of the Amazon Queen; Wyrmkeep's Inherit the Earth; Coktel Vision's Gobliiins; Westwood Studios' The Legend of Kyrandia and games based on LucasArts' SCUMM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion) system such as Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max and more. You can find a thorough list with details on which games are supported and how well on the compatibility page. ScummVM is continually improving, so check back often.
Heres the release notes:
0.12.0 (2008-08-31)
New Games:
- Added support for The Legend of Kyrandia: Book Two: Hand of Fate.
- Added support for The Legend of Kyrandia: Book Three: Malcolm's Revenge.
- Added support for Lost in Time.
- Added support for The Bizarre Adventures of Woodruff and the Schnibble.
- Added support for the PC version of Waxworks.
- Added support for the Macintosh version of I Have no Mouth, and I
must Scream.
- Added support for Drascula: The Vampire Strikes Back.
General:
- Added CAMD MIDI driver for AmigaOS4.
- Revived the PS2 port (was already in 0.11.1 but was forgotten in the
release notes).
- Plugged numerous memory leaks in all engines (part of GSoC'08 task),
- Added audio double buffering to the SDL backend, which fixes the
problems with the MT-32 emulator on Mac OS X (for now only enabled
on Mac OS X).
AGOS:
- Fixed crashes during certain music in Amiga versions of Elvira 1 and
Simon the Sorcerer 1.
- Fixed palette issues in Amiga versions of Simon the Sorcerer 1.

- Speech is played at the correct sample rate. (It used to be pitched a bit
too low.)

For better or worse, it looks like the so-called iControlPad is edging closer to reality -- or at least something really similar. According to a new image (and our limited Spanish translation skills), Belkin is actually looking to produce an App Store gaming controller, though we're still not entirely convinced that what we're seeing is legitimate. Whatever the case, the JoyPod would somehow, someway provide users who purchased Super Monkey Ball to play it using a bona fide game pad, though we can't figure out if the iPod touch / iPhone slips in behind the controller or if it just morphs to fit the JoyPod's space constraints. Guess we'll see (or not) soon enough.

Just ran into Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb over at the Microsoft booth in the PAX exhibit hall. After a bit of chatting I brought up the crash-prone iPhone Live app.
It crashes a lot, I told Hyrb, but I still use it because it's the only option for tracking folks on live on my phone. What about Live Anywhere?
They haven't forgotten about it, Hryb assured me, they've just had higher priority projects they've been working on. Things like the new Xbox Live Experience set to roll out this Fall. So it's still coming.
And what about the iPhone. Would Microsoft be behind an office App for the Apple device? Sure, why not. Plenty of Xbox 360 gamers have iPhones, he said.
I wait, anxiously, for that long-promised portable Live experience.

Recently, we witnessed the release of WinPwn 2.5. The Dev Team is right behind them with the launch of QuickPwn for Mac.
After a solid wait, Mac users can now have a piece of the QuickPwn cake. DevTeam Friday released the QuickPwn tool for Mac. For those of you who don't yet know, QuickPwn is basically a simpler and easier solution to jailbreak your iPhone - of which Windows users have had the monopoly for a few weeks.
The interface is essentially similar to the PwnageTool. QuickPwn is not a replacement for Pwnage but rather another jailbreak solution for the noobs and hasty people. This tool has the same features as QuickPwn for Windows.

All those users who were holding their breath for a complete Windows Pwnage solution can now relax!
Remember the WinPwn teasers you saw last week? After those teasers and couple of other software hitting the scene, cmw seems to have taken the case into his own hands with the new WinPwn, making it a full fledged Pwnage solution for Windows users!
This new version packs a bundle of new features - like a completely revamped wizard style interface, different mode for different users (read: Basic and Expert modes), and a DFU helper has also been added so that you don't have to find the correct way anymore. Now you can even pwn your phone on a 64-bit Vista. This all comes with a bonus auto-updater like the sparkle system for original Pwnage Tool!

It isn’t very often that an application comes around that redefines a platform, more often than not the platform redefines the applications. It is even less often that an application redefines an entire industry. Fortunately for us our passion is in the iPhone, a platform that, thanks to the developers jailbroken or official, constantly evolves and is redefined. On this permavolving platform there is a vast opportunity to redefine industries as well.
Today I had the opportunity to peer into the next evolution of the iPhone and the next evolution of VoIP. I’m not talking about the shady pseudo functioning implementation of Skype from fring – not that those guys aren’t great, I just very rarely had a working call – I am talking about the next step in VoIP technology as a whole – iCall for iPhone.
I’ve been working with the iCall crew for a couple of weeks now, starting out trying to get them to let me in with ad-hoc distribution. I talked with Arlo their CEO about why it has taken so long since we first saw the video back in June. At the time he told me that the applications in the AppStore where really more like applets and not industrial applications – he assured me that this would not be the case with iCall. I have to tell you, the man didn’t lie. There is no reality distortion field here just an absolutely incredible application.
The first time you open the application you’ll be asked to pick a get a free local number to make and receive calls using the application. For me I chose one close to my new apartment, although you could pick one in a different location if need be. Once you’ve got your number go in and enter your cell number which assists in making the switch from cellular network to iCall’s VoIP.
