JKOnTheRun has an overview of the second quarter for 2008 marketshare numbers, and there is a new number two player. Previously, Windows Mobile held on to the number two slot behind the big kid on the block, Symbian. In the most recent numbers, RIM's Blackberry platform has pushed Windows Mobile into third place.

"The concept of VsNotepad 2 is to note, change pages and view your notes like a true notepad. VsNotepad 2 allows you to organize your notes with a modern, simple, complete interface."
VsNotepad may share part of it's name with a common windows application, however it adds significantly more than Notepad could ever hope to have on the desktop. On sale now for $10 off it's usual price (sale price: $29.49), it looks like a nice app for jotting down everything from diagrams to story ideas. Check it out and let us know how it works for your needs!

If you thought that AnotherGuest (a.k.a SomeOne) has rested on his laurels and stopped releasing his great free stuff then you were wrong! Starting from the end of August, he simply flooded our discussion forums with his new, fantastic (and, as always, freeware!) ports of classic PC and video games, including:
* Clone Keen - an almost almost complete clone of one of classic DOS games, Commander Keen (episodes 1-3) by ID Software
* Miss Driller - a clone of Mr Driller. Mr. Driller is a series of video games developed by Namco. Mr. Driller puts the player in the role of a driller moving down through screens of blocks, having to keep his air supply from running out while avoiding being squashed by falling blocks.
* Hex-A-Hop - a small puzzler based on hexagonal tiles. The objective is simply to destroy all the green hexagonal tiles on each of the 100 levels.
* Heroes - a kind of Snake game, similar to the "Tron" and "Nibbles". You must maneuver a small vehicle around a world and collect powerups while avoiding obstacles, your opponents' trails, and even your own trail.
Enjoy... and stay tuned for more!

* Stratagus - free cross-platform real-time strategy gaming engine. The engine is configurable and can be used to create games with a wide-range of features specific to your needs.
* C-Dogs - the sequel to Cyberdogs, an old DOS arcade shoot-em-up which allows players to work co-operatively during missions, and against each other in "dogfight" death-match mode.
* Crimson Fields - turn-based tactical war game. Protect supply convoys or raid enemy facilities to uncover technological secrets or fill your storage bays so you can repair damaged units or build new ones in your own factories.
Enjoy... and stay tuned for more!

New for pocket PC:
Hi all,
this is mainly an auto locking program which utilizes the Windows Locking for partial locking (phone related keys are active)
or complete locking (no keys are active).
It can be considered as an add-on to other programs which provide the User Interface, an 'In Call Locker'
with some goodies as mentioned later on which may or not depend on whether the device is locked (with any program that uses
the Windows locking).
The locking can be activated at the following events:
1. After a specified period of idle time (no screen tapping or touching the keyboard).
2. After the device has waken up.
3. During a call ("In-Call Locking" Partial or Full).
Log:
13/09 - v3.30 - Fixes for various issuers reported.

Typical. A week ago I got an iPhone at the urging of a friend and then, at the urging of the same friend, bought Pangea's Cro-Mag Rally ("I think it has multiplayer. It has this mode called "gather" but I've never been around anyone with the game to try it.") That was $5.99, now it is $1.99, along with a slew of other Pangea games (and the VR Pro utility) available for iPhone and iTouch. Just goes to show, even if you wait a year, you still can't buy anything new from or for an Apple device without seeing its price halved the next week. Full list on the jump. It's a limited time promotion, like the McRib.

Just released yesterday, iPhone Modem for the Cydia jailbreak application repository promises tethering your laptop to your iPhone in just ten seconds. We haven't gotten around to jailbreaking our own yet, but this one is supposedly even easier than the official NetShare tethering app in the official App Store. ModMyiPhone forum says it works just fine on both MacBook and MacBook Pro. Careful using this on AT&T, since too much tethering data usage you're not actively "paying" for will get you neutered.

Check this out this morning. This new iPhone app from the App Store, called XBMC Remote, does just that—it lets you control your XBMC from an iPhone or iPod Touch. The app is pretty open-minded, too. It allows for XBMC control on Windows, Mac and Linux machines. It's yours, if you want it, for $5 (?!) and 0.8MB

With firmware 2.1 now out for the iPhone and iPod touch we bring you the inevitable PwnageTool and QuickPwn response. Apparently, the DevTeam took offense to a previous posting where we questioned the relevancy of continued jailbreaks in the age of the AppStore and official, worldwide iPhone distribution.
So, we'll put it to you dear reader: as much as we respect these guys for their gen-1 iPhone unlocking and pre-AppStore era work, is PwnageTool and the ability to jailbreak your phone still as important as it was?
Update: By a three-to-one margin it's clear that you still love your Pwnage! As such, we'll continue to cover the DevTeam's exploits just as obsessively as before.

Now that 2.1's out, your iPhone 3G is finally perfect -- right? Well, that all depends on your definition of "perfect," but odds are you still have a niggle or two poking out from behind that heaping pile of bugs and security flaws that were smoothed over with Cupertino's putty knife in last week's update. Here's a quick look at what we're hearing so far:
Excluding those of you who don't know where you are, our poll on claimed reception improvements in 2.1 suggests that the majority of iPhone 3G owners (by a slim margin) are seeing no improvement or -- gasp! -- a degradation in signal strength since 2.0.2. Given that 2.1 patches up some bugs with third-party apps, it comes as no surprise that a few of 'em are apparently breaking with the new firmware (a disappointment, yes, but not a surprise). It sucks that Apple whacked the ball into developers' courts on this one, and we're hoping for the sake of users and devs alike that it's not going to take many sleepless nights of re-coding and debugging to get the affected apps back on the straight and narrow. We're now hearing some reports of email buffoonery ranging from an inability to add new accounts to 2.1-equipped phones, to failures of existing accounts that had previously worked, to total Exchange breakage. Are you folks seeing anything there? Any corporate types freaking out that they've lost access to their beloved ActiveSync setups? We actually found another bug in 2.1 ourselves: we can't find copy / paste anywhere. It's anyone's guess how that one slipped by the testers.
[Thanks to everyone who sent these in]

I know we all love Pandora but unfortunately its future is in question . New to the AppStore is FlyCast (previously known as FlyTunes) which provides a solid alternative. Now FlyCast doesn't have the "awesome figure out what I want to listen to technology" like Pandora but it holds its own in the iPhone streaming music app department. FlyTunes is more like Sirius except with a lot more channels and some neat features built in.

Juice Wireless, Inc, has just released Flutter (iTunes AppStore Link), an AppStore app which (kinda) allows you to send MMS from your iPhone.
The app is definitely still in a beta format, with a bunch of supposed limitations (can only send to folks in your contact book - can't just tap in a number, can't receive MMS, location support is buggy - far off usually, and not everyone seems to be receiving the MMS's), but its up.
However, either the app is a joke, or their servers are much more overloaded than they thought would happen - I have yet to even get the confirmation sms, much less be able to test the app, and its been hours. I will update this post with a more involved review when (if?) it comes through.

Addition released their application iPhoneModem Saturday through the MMi Cydia source. They describe it as "an application for the iPhone that aims at making it really easy to use the iPhone's internet connection on your computer," and they deliver.
A while back, we posted a how to on tethering the iPhone using NateTrue's method - which required some command line knowledge and a few network tweaks on your OS X box. Until now, this was pretty much the easiest way to tether your 3G iPhone (and still is a great method which only takes a few minutes).
iPhoneModem makes tethering a 10 second process. I've been testing it the past few hours, and its incredibly well-designed and functional. For those of you running OS X Leopard (iPhoneModem is actively working on the desktop client for MacOS 10.4 and Microsoft Windows, as well as a 1.x iPhone..

Previously, when you went to google.com from your phone’s browser and performed a local search, the results were tailored to the last location you entered. Now, using the Gears Geolocation API, Search with My Location approximates your actual location using the same Cell ID technology used by Google maps for mobile. So if you want to find sushi nearby, just type "sushi" and Google will return local business listings around you. If you want to know the forecast, type "weather". If you want to search somewhere else, specify a location in the query like "pizza Kansas City."
On your mobile device, go to www.google.com/m
Click the Location link
Tell it to install Gears. A Windows CE CAB will be downloaded that you need to install.
Soft reset your device when the install is done.
Launch PIE and allow Google Gears access to your browser
It isn't perfect. It thinks I am 13 miles northwest of my present location, which is odd. The tower locator system that the Google Maps tool uses can always get me to within half a mile of my real location, and usually under 1,000 yards. It also isn't on the iGoogle page yet on your device, so you either have to pick the iGoogle personalized page to search from, or the generic Google Mobile page, but not both.
Right now it is limited to the US and UK, and there are a list of unsupported devices, so check the blog post before installing.

I'm sure all of the iPhone owners out there were chomping at the bit to download the 2.1 update when it hit today. After all, it does claim to fix major problems like call drops, crashes, slow syncing and bad battery life. I've been busy, so I haven't had a chance to install it myself—so help me out with this. How are the individual bug fixes working out for you?
Any Dropped Calls?
