Tris, the free version of Tetris for the iPhone that we loved ('cause it was free!) is being pulled from the App Store. Apparently, The Tetris Company called up Apple and it no likey. Its creator, Noah Witherspoon, says that while he thinks The Tetris Company's copyright claim is thin—and would be thinner still if he called his game "Trys"—he doesn't really have the resources to fight it in court, so he's removing it from the store on Wednesday. Download it while you can, folks! Another depressing reminder why we need the iPhone app black market.

The amazingly convincing 3D anamorphosis app iHologram we showed on Friday turns out to be just a technology demonstrator rendering rather than a real app. Its developer, David O'Reilly, apparently wasn't trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes with the cool clip of the strolling cat, but just demonstrate how the 3D effect could be made to work. He's up for collaboration "with a developer or studio who wants to make it happen," for real, though. It might not be too long before someone takes this great idea and programs it, I suspect.

In case any of you missed Adam Frucci's brilliant piece on Apple ruining his entire life by releasing a moderately buggy iPhone 3G, you may have also missed a tip he got from Apple. If you've been having trouble finding reception after losing it (say you go into a building and lose reception, but when you come out still no dice) try turning Airplane Mode on and off. This admittedly sad fix may just find you reception in a bind. And as for Adam, now he can continue bitching to the world about his sorry lot in life. Everybody wins!

There's been a lot of discussion lately about iPhone 3G reception issues. Whether they exist or not is largely irrelevant in a world dominated by sound-bite driven perceptions. Nevertheless, some industrious Swedes decided to apply a little scientific method to the argument and found something interesting: the iPhone 3G performed just as well (or just as poorly, depending upon your mood) as a Nokia N73 and Sony Ericsson P1 when compared head-to-head in a mobile communications test chamber. The test was conducted by real-life antenna engineers just like those camera-fumbling souls contracted by the FCC. Of course, who's going to let a few facts stand in the way of contrary opinion and litigation, eh?

Nokia promised us two new handsets today, and just as we heard last week, it's the N85 and N79. Not a lot of surprises with the N85 since it popped in the FCC database a couple weeks ago and started appearing in the wild: 2.6-inch AMOLED screen, GPS, five megapixel cam, N-Gage compatibility, 8GB of microSDHC storage, WiFi, and a 28-hour music playback battery life. The N79 replaces the N78, similarly bumping the cam to the big five em-pees with a dual-LED flash, GPS, 4GB microSDHC storage, WiFi, swappable back covers, and a 24-hour music playback battery life. Should be out in the UK as of next month, but we're hoping to see these hit our fair shores posthaste.

HTC's Dream phone, with Android goodness, hit the FCC last week, and details have been popping up elsewhere too: But a new pic over at FCC has given us a concrete bit of data at last... the Dream's size. It's a svelte 55mm, or 2.17-inches wide, and 115mm or 4.53-inches long. That's a jot shorter than the iPhone 3G's length (though it's 0.28-inches narrower,) and only slightly bigger than the HTC Touch Diamond at 4.02 x 2.01 inches. Do you spot what's missing? The all-important depth of the phone--it's not shown on the FCC imagery. The slide-out QWERTY keypad will play a part in that, but we don't know as yet exactly how slim or pocket-stretching it's going to be.

Sure, magic man and all-around seer Kevin Rose delivered the "news" that a refreshed iPod nano is coming in the form that slimmed up, tapered in, longish tube of a device -- but you might be looking for harder evidence. We've just come across two case-related designs supposedly destined for Apple's next PMP, but both raise as many questions as they answer. Chinese accessory-maker Beelan apparently has a silicon sleeve ready to drop ship to a location of your choice via Alibaba, and iDealsChina is showing off renders of the 4th gen nano and another case from "some unknown Canadian company." Unfortunately, neither design can really be verified, and as they've just appeared on the heels of last night's Rose rumor, the timing seems a touch suspect. We're wondering what the Engadget hive-mind thinks -- any meat on these bones?

Most of you might have heard of the Games Convention in Leipzig - the biggest European Games exhibition.
Well, I've been there (together with the mysterious girl in red who is on our openpandora.org frontpage). Not as an exhibitor - as I don't have the final Pandora case yet. But as visitor... with a fully working Pandora MK0 Devkit in my bag. And a preview-case.
I had some appointments with different magazines and webzines there - and they were all baffled how well the controls of our little unit are layouted. And impressed by the few emulators I showed them on the system.
Interest was VERY high among those who saw the system.
Chip.de a major magazine in Germany even did a nice interview with me and mentioned the Pandora as "secret highlight" of the Games Convention. A very nice video.
new post by EvilDragon on the pandora dev blog
While public press is good, here is something that might be of higher interest for some of you:
RedSpotGames, publisher for Last Hope and Wind & Water Puzzle Battles for the Dreamcast announced that they will produce and publish commercial games for the Pandora. They already have some licenses for ports (I can't tell the titles here), this als means there will be most probably an enhanced version of Wind & Water Puzzle Battles, one of the greatest puzzle games I know!
So, interest is high here in Germany, things are looking good.
What else did we see at the GC? Hmm. Nothing special. Except for Hall 2, which was the retro hall with tons of Arcade machines and old computers and consoles. That was some great fun!

News from Zodttd:
I have released a new beta, gameboy4iphone v2.0.0 for iPhone & iPod Touch Firmware 2.x.x. This one was heavily requested!
Not a beta tester? There's still time! Click here.
Here's what's new with gameboy4iphone v2.0.0:
Exclusively supports the new 2.x.x series firmwares.
Fixed the controller input to allow for 5+ touch points.
Fixed up the audio playback. Sounds great!
Improved performance by removing magnification filters in landscape and portrait views. I kept the aspect ratio so things look good still.
Lowering and raising the volume now works properly when using the L/R buttons.
Should be a lot more stable!
This looks to be a solid release... I hope you like it!
To be a beta tester you have to donate towards zodttd, if your happy basically paying for emulators then visit here

Hey, hackers! Now that we've got the attention of millions upon millions of incredibly talented individuals, here's your next challenge. India's Airtel -- which is offering Apple's iPhone 3G at a near-stratospheric price -- has claimed that "even the most deadly hackers on the planet won't be able to crack the codes that support the iPhone's Airtel applications with rival company SIMs." Just so you know, it appears that Airtel worked with Apple to develop "operator-specific iPhone applications," which is an interesting tidbit in and of itself. But let's focus on the task at hand here, and that's proving that making ridiculous claims about impenetrability always comes back to bite ya.

This week in the App Store, we've got some great freebie apps. That's a good thing. Especially when you're a beleaguered Gulfstream GIV pilot getting hit hard by the soaring price of jet fuel. This week was also great for pilots in several other ways, but there's some stuff for the rest of us, too. Come along as we see what's been hitting millions of Springboards over the past seven days.

you liked Johnny Chung Lee's Wii headtracking tricks you will love iHologram, a stunning iPhone app that makes the screen look like a window to a real, parallel dimension. While it seems like magic, it uses anamorphosis, a very simple painting technique that has been used by old masters since the 15th century, mixed with the technology in the JesusPhone.

Kevin Rose's Apple crystal ball has been wrong more often than not (he was sorta right about $199 iPhone), but this time he's seen pictures people! ("It looks pretty cool.") He says that not only will the new iPod nano be tall and skinny and giant-screened like we've heard, he says it'll be rounded (like iPhone 3G's ass-side, but all the way around), and even provides this handy rendering. His other rumorage, like a huge iTunes update with for-real new features, is all way more reasonable than his past forecasting, so they're actually possible too!

Good news, iPhone users! Looks like Apple has finally fixed that 2.0 app crashing problem. One Gizmodo reader received an email last night from the iTunes Support Store with instructions for redownloading applications you've already bought (for free, of course) and was given a $15 gift certificate for his troubles! Maybe Adam will convert to Macs after all?

A version of Myst is heading to iPhone, developer Cyan has confirmed.
The news came from a post on the official Myst forums, where an unnamed developer confirmed that a small team of three has already started working on the touchscreen port.
"This is a small project that probably a very few of you know about," said the post. "We are porting Myst to the iPhone."
"Ok, before some of you start groaning, this is an outside funded project that is keeping a few developers employed... but it is really more than that. It is an interesting and fun project."
Mindless puzzles on the bus, on the toilet... sounds like a natural fit to us. We'll let you know when the first details hit.
