At the Let's Rock event this week, Apple pushed the new iPod touch hard (and iPhone too, obviously) as a viable gaming platform. Steve even went so far as to call it the best portable gaming platform out there. Strong words for DS and PSP fans, but the crop of games popping up in the App Store continues to build steam. This week we'll take a look at games both current and upcoming, as well as some other standout favorites as always. Shall we?
Real Soccer: Real Soccer got a quick play during the Let's Rock event and hit the store this week. For $10 you can play as 198 real teams in 12 different stadiums with FIFA 96-era graphics, all using an on-scree D-pad and A+B button. The other demo at Let's Rock, Need For Speed: Undercover, is still under development and will drop in November. Real Soccer is $10
TouchGrind: Due to be released in October, we got a look this week at Touchgrind, a novel skateboard game which is billing itself as the "first true multitouch game" let's you do tricks and flips with a mini deck, racking up points for combos. From the demo video, it looks pretty great, especially if you were as obsessed with the old Tony Hawk PS1 games as my friends and I were.
Air Sharing: Air Sharing looks like it may be the king so far of the file storage apps—our friends over at Lifehacker gave it a shakedown and liked what they saw. It uses WebDAV to show up as a shared folder on Mac, Windows or Linux systems which allows you to save files to your iPhone's flash memory, and provides a URL for devices on the same network to connect to and download the files to another machine. And best of all, unlike many of the other iPhone file vaults, it's free. Until September 22, that is, so grab it.
Roller Coaster Physics: Really cool idea for an app that records G-forces from your accelerometers and displays the results on a trend line. It's designed to be used to measure exactly how much force is causing your stomach to drop at Six Flags, but I don't see why you couldn't use it in a car or anything else, when you want to monitor G-forces. And it's free.
Civil Aircraft Identification Guide: These guys had me in mind. As an aviation geek I love spotting jets at the airport, but as anyone else who shares my hobby knows, sometimes telling your 737s from you A319s (look for the slanted section of the tail fin on the 37, but still) is tough. Airplane ID gives you top and side views with stats on 40 of the major airliners. Cool stuff. $2

Asphalt 4: Elite Racing will be Need For Speed's number one competitor: as it's been camped out on the top ten most popular apps list. This driving sim gives you on-screen D-pad or accelerometer steering, and lets up to four players join in multiplayer games on the same Wi-Fi network. $10
And of course Light Saber Unleashed (formerly Phone Saber). This one isn't a DS killer, but thank God it's back.
And as commenter Marcelo points out, Cro-Mag Rally (Mario Kart for cavemen) is on sale for $2 this week, down from $10. Good deal.

Why, this is downright preposterous! How dare the copyright-ignoring, astonishingly uncreative minds of those at Miao copy Apple's latest iPod nano design a full year in advance? They should be implausibly embarrassed by churning out a so-called Cottage MP3 player in 2007, all while the brains at Cupertino sat and pondered how to make its tiny little PMP that much better. This, people, is an outrage. An outrage!

Well, that was fast -- iPod touch firmware 2.1 was just released on Tuesday, and the QuickPwn project already has it jailbroken. It's not quite the GUI one-click process it's been in the past, but if you're anxious for a little underground code to go with your Genius playlists, it's not overly complicated. Let us know how it goes, we'll let you know when the iPhone 2.1 jailbreak inevitably hits.
Update: The Dev Team just pinged us to say that this isn't one of their official releases, if that sort of thing matters to you.

So, you've gone and updated to that new "big fix" firmware 2.1 -- but is the Kool Aid as delicious as you've been promised? On our end, we're certainly seeing noticeable improvements on lagging keyboards, app switching / opening (particularly with contacts and text messages), moving through menus / scrolling, application installation and iTunes syncing, but has Apple solved the big issue? The software update page boasts of a "decrease in call set-up failures and dropped calls," and while that might make you think you'll see the proverbial "more bars in more places" (and you probably do), it's likely related to another change in this update, namely, "improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display."
We know that a lot of you are seeing apparent improvements in signal strength, but is that a matter of updated icons, or a reflection of some crazy voodoo Apple performed on the phone's radio? We're leaning towards the former, but we'd like to hear what you have to say. So what's the deal? Is the iPhone 3G seeing actual reception improvements, or is it just cosmetic? In their teardown of the iPod touch version 2, iFixit found a secret surprise: A Broadcom Bluetooth chipset! Though totally unannounced and not listed on the spec page (Apple says Nike+ doesn't use Bluetooth), the iPod touch's Bluetooth chipset supports 2.1+EDR. We don't know for sure yet if it has A2DP, which would let you use stereo headphones—and be another hardware one-up over the iPhone besides ">the built-in Nike+ functions. We've got our fingers crossed—what else would it be used for? Update: MacRumors notes that Nike+ uses the same 2.4GHz frequency as Bluetooth, so that might be what's going on here.

One of the smaller, but still significant announcements yesterday was that NBC was coming back to iTunes and that they'd be one of the channels offering TV shows in high-def—for $2.99. Buried in that, even, is that they'll sell a bunch of older shows for just 99 cents an ep, and offer discounts to Season Pass buyers. Cnet says that "What this means for consumers, however, is that Apple is slowly losing control over pricing of video content at iTunes." Uh, what?

Sekai Camera is the killer iPhone application I was looking for: just point your camera anywhere around you to have instant feedback about whatever is on your screen. Directions, reviews, messages, offers, and any tag you can imagine will appear floating in front of you, adding a graphic overlay to the world.

After being voluntarily retired from the iTunes App Store, following a call by THQ Wireless, the most useless yet completely obligatory iPhone app—PhoneSaber—is returning to the store as LightSaber Unleashed. The lightsaber simulator will tie in with the new LucasArts's game, including completely new graphics, "dueling music," and characters from the game:

We'd heard rumors that the Gizmondo 2 would be running Google's Android OS, and the company has now confirmed it to be true (Windows CE is the other optional OS). Available this winter, the Gizmondo 2 is a lot like the original Gizmondo but has a better battery and newer Nvidia chips inside. You like how we mentioned those other details? You know, like you actually care or something?

So said Jonathan Zdziarski in his O'Reilly webcast today, in which he also demoed a way around the iPhone passcode lock, as promised. To achieve that zoomy minimizing effect every time you press the home button (i.e., every time you finish reading your text messages, emails, web history, contacts—think how many times you press that button), the system takes a full-screen grab and caches it. Which, if you're up to some naughtiness (or your phone gets stolen), isn't something you necessarily want to happen.

While the DevTeam rightly asserts that Apple can't undo the bug exploited by PwnageTool via firmware update alone, it's still subject to the whims of iTunes connectivity. In fact, iTunes 8 seems to detect jailbroken devices jailbreaking attempts and then stomps its feet and refuses to play nice. While the DevTeam says that fixes are in the works, the growing list of useful applications in the AppStore coupled with the global retail availability of the iPhone (and lack of a 3G unlock) makes PwnageTool less and less relevant with each passing day.
Update: The problem seems to occur when you try to restore to an iPwned ipsw from a non-iPwned device. Syncing to an already Pwned device works fine.

Although they still rate Apple behind Sony Ericsson, Sony, Nokia, Samsung, Dell, Toshiba, Acer... (you get the idea) in its quarterly guide to greener electronics, Greenpeace tossed a bit of love to the boys from Cupertino for the new eco-friendlier iPod nano. In a blog post titled "less toxic iPods rock," Greenpeace praised itself as victorious in its own "Green my Apple campaign" before chiding Apple for not doing more to green all of its products. Hooray, a victory for Greenpeace, shame on you Apple for uh... oh never mind.

The long-rumored resurrection of Gizmondo from the ashes of Stefan Eriksson's bisected Ferrari Enzo is near. Near, that is, if you believe Rich Jenkins, CEO of Media Power, the company behind this rebirth. Jenkins recently showed Swedish journalist Hans Sandberg a box full of pre-production gaming handhelds, all looking suspiciously like old, decidedly post-production units. According to Jenkins the changes are all internal, consisting of new graphics hardware from nVidia and an uprated battery (to be offered as a free upgrade to scorned owners of the original). Pricing is still undetermined but Android is confirmed; owners will have to choose either Google's new hotness or Microsoft's decidedly more tepid Windows CE, but can't have both -- unless they buy two. Release is still set for the end of this year via a "really cool website" hitting the intertubes next month.

We'll tell you that when we first got a chance to handle Apple's latest generation of the iPod touch on Tuesday, our gadget-nerd alarms went clanging like there was a really, really bad fire somewhere. The improvements the company has made in design aren't remarkable, but they are entirely welcome. The new housing is smooth, incredibly thin, and feels like a solid metal brick in your hands. The built-in speaker is a nice addition, as are those volume controls (finally!) -- the screen is incredibly bright (on par with the iPhone 3G), though it also looks like it got the 3G's new color temperature. On the software side, 2.1 is definitely feeling smoother and slicker than previous versions, the Nike+ inclusion is huge if you're a runner, and the implementation is well integrated -- overall, we're leaning towards a thumbs-up on those bug fixes too. Unfortunately, we couldn't seem to get the Genius function working on the device (anyone else having this issue?), though that may be more of a server-side conflict than something funky with the player, as we were getting errors in iTunes when trying to flip the switch. We'll be blowing this out with a full review, but for now you can enjoy the succulent pics in the gallery below!

As we expected, Apple's "Let's Rock" event yesterday offered some new iPods and a new version of iTunes—even if the unveiling didn't quite meet our expectations. But Steve Jobs and Co. had something else to deliver as well: a clear message that his company now has its sights set directly on the portable gaming market, with very real and very high aspirations for App Store games for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Jobs even showed off a new ad touting the new iPod Touch as the "funnest" iPod ever.
Apple's mobile gaming goals go far beyond fancy new versions of Bejeweled and Tetris—Jobs yesterday called for "a whole new class of games." It's now clear that the company is gunning for the big boys: Nintendo and Sony, whose DS and PSP platforms, respectively, have dominated the portable video-game market for years. Here's why the old giants should be scared of the new kid on the block—and why they shouldn't.
3 Reasons Nintendo and Sony Are Running Scared:
1. Buying iPhone/iPod Games Is Quick and Simple
Because games can be purchased directly on your iPhone or iPod Touch via Wi-Fi or the phone's 3G network, it's easy to overdo it. Psychologically, pressing "Install" just isn't the same as plopping down a few bills at your local GameStop, so a spend-happy gamer may be likely to buy three or four games in a binge. And because iPhone and iPod users can buy games anytime, anywhere, they never have to worry about stock shortages—or ever getting up from their couch.
2. iPod Games Are Cheap, and Increasingly High-Profile
Very, very few iPhone/iPod games cost more than $10. Meanwhile, very few Nintendo DS or PSP games cost less than $25. And while the DS and PSP games are usually big-budget affairs that dwarf a simple iPhone Sudoku application, this gap is rapidly closing as high-profile developers increasingly port big games such as Spore and Need For Speed to the iPhone and iPod.
3. iPod Games Can Be Expanded and Updated
It's almost inevitable that a big game will have a few bugs or glitches that aren't discovered until after launch. There's usually little Nintendo DS and PSP players can do other than grin and deal with the glitchy gameplay. But iPod games can be tuned to check for updates and heal themselves whenever bugs are found. The iPhone 3G makes it especially easy for developers to deliver expansion packs, adding levels and characters to successful games.
3 Reasons the Gaming Companies Can Sleep Easy ... for Now:
1. iPods Are Touchscreen-Only
In some ways, the absence of a keypad is a boon to innovation when it comes to mobile gaming—it encourages developers to think up creative workarounds using simple tilts and touch gestures. But it's not perfect. This is true for both big, complex games (there's a reason the touchscreen DS also has a full keypad), and with the retro/classic gaming that mobile platforms traditionally excel at (we'll never get used to tilting our phone to manipulate Tetris blocks, and Space Invaders just isn't the same if you can't properly mash your fingers against buttons). Finally, buttons are still far more precise than Apple's accelerometer.
2. Parents Won't Buy iPhones For Their Kids
The Nintendo DS costs just $129. The PSP? $169. These relatively low prices make them very attractive to parents out shopping for an electronic babysitter. Not only do the iPhone and iPod Touch cost considerably more, but they simply aren't toys that can be thrown into the hands of young children. They have large, fragile glass touchscreens, no restrictions on Internet browsing and come linked to online stores. To the extent that gaming is for children, Apple hasn't figured out how to corner the market yet.
3. Games for Dedicated Systems are Much Bigger.
It's hard to ignore that even the high-profile iPhone/iPod games are pretty stripped down, usually playing like drawn-out mini-games that rely on one or two touchscreen-, or accelerometer-driven gimmicks. No matter how pretty a game is, if the gameplay just involves tilting the screen left and right, you won't play it for long. Dedicated gaming systems typically feature more complex games with stylistically different levels and elements. On the other hand, too many big applications will just slow the iPod Touch and iPhone down. Lets put it this way: The Grand Theft Auto series soared on the PSP, but will likely never come to the iPhone (and we're not so sure we'd want to play it if it did).
What are your thoughts, personally the biggest threat to DS and PSP in homebrew terms is Pandora but commercialy if they bring the Iphone/ipod touch down to a much lower price then only then will it threaten PSP or DS, your thoughts via comments

Apple's decision to transition from the fat third-generation iPod nano to the new svelte fourth-generation iPod nano must have been an easy one. The latest version has the same size screen (just rotated vertically) and the same video support as before, but adds a much more comfortable (sorta) oval shape, a curved screen, an accelerometer, a 16GB version and most importantly, a much improved user interface that aims to solve some of the limitations the Clickwheel has compared to the iPod Touch and iPhone UIs. This evolution succeeds beautifully.

As expected, Apple just updated the iPod touch with a new thinner stainless steel case -- it's still got the same display. There's now hardware volume controls (hooray!) and a built-in speaker, and a Nike+ receiver is also built in, so you just need the shoe transmitter. On the software side, the UI has been tweaked and the new iTunes Genius features have been added, and the App Store is now included (obviously). Battery life is decent at 36 hours of music and 6 hours of video, and Apple's doing the same "environmentally sound" design thing it did with the new nano. Three price points: 8GB for $229, 16GB for $299, and 32GB for $399. So much for that rumored price drop below the iPhone's $199 price point, but we won't complain too much about a $100 price drop.
