For over 10 years, the desktop and mobile graphics space has been dominated by two players: Nvidia and AMD/ATI. After 3dfx collapsed, there was a brief period of time when it looked as though Imagination Technologies might establish itself as a third option. Ultimately, that didn't happen — the company's tile-based rendering solution, Kyro, failed to gain mass-market support and faded after two generations. Now, there's a flurry of evidence to suggest that Imagination Technologies plans to re-enter PC market, but from the opposite direction. Rather than building expensive discrete solutions, IT is focused on deploying GPUs that can challenge Nvidia and AMD solutions in tablets, mobile phones, and possibly netbooks. Over the past two weeks, Imagination Technologies has announced new, higher-end versions of its Power VR Series 6 GPU, claiming that the new Power VR G6230 and G6430 go '"all out," adding incremental extra area for maximum performance whilst minimising power consumption.' There's a new ray-tracing SDK out and a post discussing how PowerVR is utilizing GPU Compute and OpenCL to offload and accelerate CPU-centric tasks."Update: 06/17 17:53 GMT by T : Related: An anonymous reader adds a link to a new project from the FSF to reverse engineer the PowerVR SGX

AOC has a bit of a long-term memory issue: it claims the Aire iPlay E2343Fi is the first computer monitor to have a built-in iPhone and iPod docking station. Nope. But don't let that deter you from checking out the new 23-inch LCD, whose cradle in the base will both keep your Apple gear topped up as well as play movies and music through the display. The 10-watt speakers won't exactly bring the house down, though they will let you take the headphones off. As an actual computer display, it's a typical TN-based panel with a 1080p resolution, a quick 2ms pixel response time and a boldly claimed 50,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. Those who find a separate dock or (gasp) wires too much can officially spend $280 for an Aire iPlay of their own today; Amazon and other shops have already knocked the price down to a more palpable $230.

As far as video games go, it doesn't get much simpler than Pong -- two paddles, one ball, no complications. A classic, to be sure, but definitely not the flashiest game when pitted against the averagesmartphone title -- maybe that's why Atari is asking indie developers to jazz it up. Yes, the Pong Indie Developer Challenge is in full swing, and Atari has pared down some 90-odd submissions to mere 15. Not familiar with the contest? Here's a quick refresh: Atari is looking for indie developers to re-imagine Pong for iOS as a fun, original, visually interesting and overtly marketable title. The stakes? Winners can score up to $100,000 and a publishing contract with Atari. Many of the semi-finalists' redesigns are as simple as adding multitouch gestures or bending the traditionally square playing field into a more circular court, but a few ambitious developers mixed it up with 3D playing fields, anthropomorphic paddles or augmented reality multiplayer. Check out Mashable's collection of contestant trailers at the link below for a look at the Pong of tomorrow. As for us? We're still pretty pleased with yesterday's model.

Dictionary.com defines an anachronism as "something or someone that is not in its correct historical or chronological time, especially a thing or person that belongs to an earlier time." A steam-powered car on an interstate highway, for instance, would be an anachronism. Similarly, playing a game that dramatically pre-dates the technology you're playing it on is delightfully anachronistic.
Case in point, 1987's Final Fantasy is now available for Windows Phone. The $6.99 app works on Windows Phone devices running Mango or newer and supports four languages: English, French, Chinese and Japanese. It also allows ancient cave-people like the Joystiq staff to reflect on how far technology has come, and gives young whippersnappers a chance to impress their friends by pretending to remember a game that came out before they were born.

The latest update brings the app in line with its Android cousin, adding automatic uploads for photos and video over WiFi and cellular connections, the ability to upload files of any size and a new Gallery view. Of course it does, check it out for yourself at the iTunes link below.

The launch of the Orange San Diego, the first handset using an Intel Atom processor, marks a big milestone for the chipmaker: it's finally in the smartphone market. But does the market need Intel at all? ... Intel's scale and the reach of its other divisions gives [Mike] Bell's smartphone unit a boost; for example, it can reuse code optimizations for Atom done by the desktop team. ... Even so, the smartphone team has got a tough job on its hands — but it's one Intel has to tackle, according to Carolina Milanesi, mobile analyst at Gartner. 'This is certainly an attack strategy for Intel. The smartphone market is so large now that they need a piece of the pie,' she said. But will consumers care whether their handset runs on an Intel chip? Bell conceded that aside from the tech-savvy, most people probably don't know which chip is inside their phone. It's likely, given the lack of advertising on this, that most probably don't care — making Intel's job even harder."

125m adults in the UK and US are playing games on a phone.
EA division, PopCap Games, says the 125 million total is equivalent to 44 per cent of people, up from 29 per cent last year.
It said tablets are driving the change, with nine per cent of owners becoming mobile gamers. Indeed, the iPad and Kindle are responsible for 11 million newbies in the past year.
An impressive 46 per cent of all video game time is spent on a mobile device, with phones securing 33 per cent of gameplay, compared to consoles, which took 18 per cent.
Unsurprisingly, 57 per cent of dual device owners play daily, compared to 41 per cent of single device owners, while 56 per cent of dual players are male.
70 per cent have taken up mobile gaming due to the rising freemium format, while 47 per cent cite a better phone with gaming functions, and a quarter say it's due to a tablet purchase.

The Google platform accounted for 381m of them.
The data and infographics come from madvertise's latest 'madreport'. The European mobile ad firm partnered app search specialist, Xyologic for the research, which covers download trends across the UK, Germany, France, Spain and Italy - the EU5.
iPhone and Android app downloads across the EU5 reached 603 million in Q1, rising from 552 million in Q4.
Android was the star of the show, growing from 262 million to 381 million between Q4 and Q1, while iPhone fell from 290 million to 222 million.
In fact, Android was the leader for app downloads across all countries, and the firm's claim the Google OS is the best way for developers to get their apps noticed.
Check out the infographics below to see what apps the UK favoured during Q1.

Street Fighter X Tekken met with a troubled launch and a cool reception on PS3 and Xbox 360. Maybe it'll do better ... on iPhone? Capcom announced today that Street Fighter X Tekken is due for release on iOS this summer.
According to Capcom, the mobile version includes "brand new modes and a brand new take on the tag team mechanic." So far the only confirmed characters are Ryu, Chun-Li, Kazuya, and Nina, so in its current state that "brand new take" only includes "being able to choose fewer people for your tag team." We're confident Capcom will announce more characters before the game's release, and if SF4 on iOS is any indication, add more characters in free updates.

Nokia made mention of a broader Lumia phone range coming as part of its major strategy shakeup, but it wasn't clear just where the Windows Phone line was heading. During a call discussing the nitty-gritty of the strategy shift, though, the company made clear that it was swinging towards devices cheaper than theLumia 610 -- much cheaper. Plans had already been underway to drop the price lower, but Microsoft had given "specific support" to get to lower prices than Nokia "had a sight to." Executives dropped hints that "important catalyst dates" in Microsoft's Windows Phone timetable were instrumental to lower prices; we've got a few ideas as to what Nokia might mean. The cost-cutting was considered vital to competing with the very low-cost Android smartphones that thrive in countries like China, as Nokia wasn't about to throw a mix of basic Symbian phones and Windows Phones against a pure smartphone platform like Google's. Along with narrowing the focus in product launches to fewer countries but more ambitious plans -- think of AT&T's Lumia 900 launch shebang -- Finland's phone giant thinks it can go toe-to-toe with Android-using rivals that can often compete solely on cost.

Put down War and Peace for just a second. If you're a Kindle user on iOS, Android or Amazon's Cloud Reader, a new update brings children's books, graphic novels and comics to your virtual library. The children's titles will support Kindle Text Pop-Up to help boost the size of the words and spare your little one's eyes. Comics, however, get the Kindle Panel View treatment -- on supported titles -- that'll keep that analog format's frame-by-frame style. An iOS-only tweak adds title- and author search of your library, plus smaller margins on the iPad. Android tablet owners and Cloud Readers, on the other hand, can now enjoy a two-page view. The updates are available starting today, so fold the corner on the source links, or head straight to the next chapter.

Taking phone photography seriously is certainly possible. Short of tacking on a slightly ludicrous add-on case, however, you're normally stuck with whatever lens the phone designer deems fit. Unless Apple uses technology from a very out-of-left-field patent application, that is. The invention would make an iPhone's back panel removable so that owners could swap out lenses like they would with a DSLR or amirrorless camera. Apple has even raised the possibility of a panel with two lenses built-in at opposite corners: to switch to a telephoto lens or a different filter, you'd only need to flip the panel around to use the additional glass. It's all quite wild, although it's for that reason that the patent might never get used. The company isn't a fan of replaceable parts, after all. But if the photographer for your future wedding shows up with nothing but an iPhone and a bag full of back plates, you'll know why -- even if you're still left scratching your head.

Based on the amount of effort poured into iOS 6 in order to tailor it for users in China, one thing's obvious: it's a nation grasping for smartphones. Apple's seeing huge, huge upticks in spending from Chinese customers, and Nokia's sure hoping it sees similar. In the midst of untold turmoil, Nokia is sprinkling in a bit of positive news this morning -- news that the Lumia 900 is now shipping in China. The 900 marks the fifth Lumia smartphone to ship in the nation of 900 million mobile phone users, with white, black and cyan versions to choose from. Outside of the basic specifications, the Chinese 900 will also come preloaded with nation-specific apps such as Sina Weibo, QQ IM, Baidu Search and Alipay. Oh, and if a phone wasn't enough, the Nokia Reaction Bluetooth Headset is also launching there today, enabling you to finally make use of that NFC module. The Lumia 900 hardware will sell for RMB 4599 ($721) in Nokia's flagship store, Nokia brand stores and the nation's "top electronics chain stores."

Addressable market has grown to over 125 million people playing mobile games in the US and UK
[h=3]PopCap Games[/h]www.popcap.com
Smartphone gaming and tablet gaming is on the rise, as nearly half of all adults in the US and UK are now playing games on mobile, according to a new survey conducted by Information Solutions Group on behalf of PopCap. It is estimated that there is now an addressable market of more than 125 million people playing mobile games in the US and UK.
In fact, almost half (46 percent) of all video game time is spent on a mobile device, the survey indicated. Phones and computers were found to be the most common game devices (33 percent and 32 percent, respectively), whereas dedicated consoles were only at 18 percent.
"Mobile games continue to vie with social games as the hottest sector of the video game industry and that trend shows no sign of waning," stated Dennis Ryan, VP of Worldwide Publishing at PopCap. "Smartphone adoption continues apace and tablet adoption has added considerable fuel to the fire. Even more important, consumers are embracing the shift toward freemium games and other add-on game content purchases, driving the dramatic and rapid shift in the forms of monetization being used by developers and publishers."
Further data from the survey shows that more than 4 in 10 adults had played at least one mobile game in the past month, which is a sizable increase of 29 percent compared to a year ago. And tablets are generating lots of interest, as the iPad, Kindle and other tablet devices have brought approximately 11 million new mobile gamers into the fold in the past 12 months. 36 percent of mobile gamers now own a tablet and 74 percent of the tablet gamers did not play mobile games previously.
The free-to-play sector, as Ryan alluded to, is definitely helping to drive mobile. Among the reasons cited for the increase in mobile gameplay are the availability of more free games (70 percent), acquisition of a new phone with better gaming capabilities (47 percent) and purchase of a tablet (25 percent).
That said, spending data reveals that half (51 percent) of mobile gamers made mobile game-related purchases in the past year. 62 percent was directly for games, while four out of every ten dollars spent was for additional content and/or in-game currency. Interestingly, tablet gamers are more likely to spend, as mobile gamers who only play on a tablet spent 1.5 times more on games and game content than those who only play mobile games on a phone ($25.47 versus $16.68).

Every day hundreds of new apps make their debut on the App Store, and hundreds more are updated or reduced in price. We have sifted through the noise and highlighted those select few that might be worth your attention.
Game Debuts
Mutant Storm – ($2.99)
Popular XBLA & PC twin-stick shooter Mutant Storm is now available on the App Store courtesy of Crescent Moon Games.
Babel Rising 3D – ($2.99)
Once again gamers can step into God’s sandals and punish those heathen Babylonians for constructing towers of Babel. As its name implies, this sequel’s most notable change is the shift from 2D to 3D.
Suspect in Sight – ($0.99)
Why should villains get to have all the fun? Suspect in Sight lets gamers chase down criminals with extreme prejudice in their own police helicopter.
WarGames: WOPR – ($0.99)
Children of the 70s and 80s: pay attention! I have no idea whether WarGames: WOPR is any good or not. It’s just incredible and a little ridiculous that the game exists at all. The title is fully licensed from the 29-year-old(!!) Matthew Broderick film, and seems to take full advantage of said license.
Eager Beaver – ($0.99)
Eager Beaver looks like another friendly 2D physics puzzler from Chillingo. Build a beaver dam out of anything and everything you can get your hands on.
Pocket Planes – (Free)
Nimblebit’s Tiny Tower follow-up Pocket Planes is finally available! Join the IGN crew &read our first impressions from earlier this morning.
Disco Kitten – ($0.99)
Disco Kitten proves that Chillingo publishes more than just physics puzzlers. It’s weird. It’s musical. And it stars an adorable robot kitty. Cute!
realMyst – ($6.99)
Cyan Worlds has been repackaging and rereleasing Myst for nearly 20 years. iPad owners can now get in on the action with realMyst, a fully 3D recreation of the original game’s static pre-rendered images.
Price Drops
Plants vs. Zombies – ($0.99)
If you’ve somehow managed to never experience PopCap’s goofy lane defense title, grab it now! It’s on sale for just $0.99 for a limited time.
Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing – (Free)
Sega has once again given games the opportunity to grab its mascot kart racer free-of-charge. Nice!
Spy Mouse – (Free)
Firemint’s cute top-down stealth-puzzler has gone free for the first time ever! iPad owners can also get in on this free offer.
Flight Control Rocket – (Free)
EA’s Flight Control follow-up is also free for a limited time. Note that the title still features an aggressive in-app purchase strategy.

Total War Battles: Shogun

Finnish mobile phone company Nokia has announced a fresh round of redundancies with some 10,000 workers facing the sack.
The move brings the total amount of staff laid off by the company since the appointment of current chief executive Stephen Elop in September 2010 to 40,000.
"These planned reductions are a difficult consequence of the intended actions we believe we must take to ensure Nokia's long-term competitive strength," Elop stated.
“We do not make plans that may impact our employees lightly, and as a company we will work tirelessly to ensure that those at risk are offered the support, options and advice necessary to find new opportunities."
The company is also closing the last of its Finnish production plants, although it will continue to operate an R&D facility in its home country. R&D sites in Germany and Canada will close their doors, however.
Also closing is Nokia’s luxury handset maker Vertu, which produces flashy jewel-clad handsets costing as much as $300,000.
The net result of these moves – which are expected to be completed by the end of 2013 – is a core operating cost saving of around $3.8bn per year.
Nokia’s share price has tumbled by over 70 per cent since February 2011.

It could be on the cards as Amazon reportedly prepares for an international Appstore release.
Amazon's Appstore is a strict Android-only arena. It was launched in March last year in an attempt to build revenues and engagement between its Kindle device users, all of which run on Google's OS, as well as general Android device owners.
However, despite passing 31,000 apps on the platform, it's only available in the the US, along with its Kindle Fire tablet, which received mass adoption in Q4 when it sold around four million devices, though sales fell to a dismal 700,000 in Q1.
Now, AllThingsD reports the Amazon Appstore is due for a European launch this summer, with an official announcement due in weeks. If true, an international Kindle Fire launch could follow, and likely stimulate sales.
The appstore roll out would also provide developers with a better chance to monetise their apps, and potentially generate more downloads, ultimately driving more interest from other third parties, and in turn, consumers.

Will enable parents to prevent inappropriate content access via apps and mobile web.
Mobile and online security provider AVG's Family Safety platform is a web browser that blocks explicit content, malware, scams and fraud, sparing children from accessing it.
AVG has now expanded the service as an app to iPhone, iPad and Windows Phone devices, as the number of kids accessing their own mobiles, as well as their parents', continues to grow.
After parents have downloaded the app, they need to link it to the Family Safety account, where they can control the filtering options and expand it from PC to mobile.
JR Smith, CEO of AVG Technologies, said: "With people increasingly using mobile devices to access social networks and browse the web, protecting these devices against online threats has become vital.
"Online scams and attacks are on the rise and can occur on any platform with access to the web. AVG aims to protect its users wherever they go. With AVG Family Safety for iOS and Windows Phone, we provide our users the peace of mind that they and their children are protected against online threats on these mobile platforms too."

No R-rated mobile content on their watch.
American operator AT&T and researcher GfK are behind the data, which shows an overwhelming 90 per cent of eight-17 year-olds are happy for parents to set rules on their mobile activity, though just two-thirds of parents have implemented such restrictions.
It shows that the laidback 24 per cent that haven't enforced parental guidance are missing a trick, as 39 per cent of 12-14 year olds know someone that's been sent a sext – text of a sexual nature. This leaps to 53 per cent for 15-17 year olds.
Meanwhile, almost one-fifth of eight-11 year olds have been on the receiving end of text-based bullying, and kids say mobile safety isn't high on parents' priority lists.
Betsy Landers, National PTA president, said: "Today's parent should be aware of today's technology and how it can affect their children. Being an engaged parent includes having a conversation about wireless safety with their children as they grow up."
The results show the average age for a child to receive their first mobile is 12.1, with the age creeping to 13.8 for smartphones.
