There's been a steady flow of betas for Firefox's Android offering and now the official Twitter account promises something "big" on the way next week, along with this image. The size declaration plus a lack of updated features (specifically Flash support) on tablets so far has us looking there for something new, although the image clearly shows a phone with the words "Fast. Smart. Safe." Also curious is an update for the Firefox beta on Android today which the Twitter account also admonishes those looking for an early preview of next week's news to check out. Finally, there's the timing, as Firefox's main browser rival Chrome has been rumored to be taking over as the standard bearer in Android Jelly Bean next week during Google I/O. Leave all relevant speculation or information in the comments below.

You've likely read our review of Sony's Xperia Ion by now, so just consider this a reminder for those who've yet to peruse it. After nearly half a year from being christened at CES, the Ion can officially be purchased today in the US. Agreeing to a two-year commitment and laying out 100 smackers at AT&T -- or just 50 at Sony or Best Buy -- will net you this handset and its curious match-up of dated and up-to-date specs. On the one hand, this Xperia disappointingly runs Android Gingerbread (2.3.7) atop a dual-core 1.5Ghz Snapdragon S3 processor. However, it also packs a 4.6-inch HD Reality display (1280 x 720), 1,900mAh battery, 1GB of RAM, a 12MP (720p video) Exmor R sensor-loaded rear shooter, NFC and PlayStation certification. Hit up your local AT&T, Best Buy or Sony store to see if it feels better in your hand than it did in ours, or shop for it online at the source links below.

Search giant briefly confirms version 4.1 will be named after the chewy candy.
It's been a big fortnight in the world of operating systems, with Apple revealing iOS 6, while Microsoft got in on the act with Windows Phone 8.
Not wanting to be left out in the cold, Google leaked an image of its forthcoming Galaxy Nexus phone on Google Play, describing it as 'The latest smartphone from Google, soon the first phone with Android 4.1 Jell...'.
Droid-life managed to capture a screengrab of the image, which was just as well because the info has since been removed from the store.
The sudden appearance and vanishing act has the essence of a publicity stunt, but it's likely an official reveal will take place at the Google I/O event kicking off on June 27th.

RIM plans to launch BlackBerry 10 on a touchscreen-only device.
RIM's physical QWERTY keypad and its email/BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) services are its two strongest assets that keep BlackBerry users coming back for more.
But forget about material buttons for now, because the first BlackBerry 10-powered phone to come out of RIM's locker won't have any, according to the Washington Post.
Next-generation OS, BB10, is considered to be RIM's make or break moment, following a terrible year, and RIM spokeswomen Rebecca Freiburger has said the debut device that sports the tech will be a touchscreen-only model.
The theory behind it makes sense, high-end Android and iOS touch-only devices are flying off of store shelves, so it will be interesting whether a supercharged offering from RIM will be able to repeat the success of its rivals.
It seems the BlackBerry maker sensed the initiative won't appeal to everyone though, and Freiburger added that BB10 devices with physical buttons will follow, but kept quiet on when any of the products will arrive.

Driver takes to forums with complaints of white flames lashing across the device.
The Samsung Galaxy S III was launched last month, with pre-orders nearing ten million as buyers eagerly planned ahead to get their hands on the firm's flagship smartphone.
And while the demand may have been hot, a new report from sister title, PCR, says that the device is quite literally fiery.
A S III owner from Ireland, known as dillo2k10, took to forums to complain about the device, which 'exploded' when charging in their car, producing "white flame, sparks and a bang."
Carphone Warehouse apparently ignored its customers cries for help, though Samsung swooped in to save the day with a replacement, as well as additional treats.
Samsung, said: "There have been recent online posts displaying pictures of a Samsung Galaxy S3 that appears to have heat-related damage at the bottom of the device. Samsung is aware of this issue and will begin investigating as soon as we receive the specific product in question.

If one of the aims of the Raspberry Pi was to embody the "do-it-yourself" ethos, then it's already succeeded. Annoyed at the wait for the education-friendly board to arrive, the anonymous creator of the Gooseberry decided to build their own. Looking reasonably similar to its inspiration, it's packing a 1GHzAllWinner CPU, 400MHz Mali GPU, 512MB RAM and 4GB of onboard storage. It'll go on sale in the UK for £40 ($63) shortly, running Gingerbread and is capable of running HD video -- as demonstrated by the video we've got for you after the break.

The debate can now be laid to rest: devices currently running on Windows Phone 7.5 will not be on the receiving end of the long-awaited Apollo update (aka Windows Phone 8). But that doesn't mean those smartphones are at the end of the line. It's long been speculated that the reason Microsoft would want to restrict WP8 to new phones is primarily due to improvements in hardware support and the change in platform architecture, and this conjecture appears to be right on the money. After all, how can single-core devices with WVGA screens take advantage of multi-core and additional resolution support? That part makes sense, but that leaves the software side.
So here's the plan to ensure current Windows Phone users stay happy: a few software benefits will be included in WP8, and a hearty helping of these killer features (such as the new Start screen) will be available to legacy devices in the form of Windows Phone 7.8. There'll be support for three tile sizes, with the smallest being fingertip size (a quarter of the standard square). The update will be delivered directly to users, sidestepping carriers, and can be done over WiFi.
Update: While Microsoft was keen to announce that 7.x apps will run on Windows Phone 8, ZDNet has just confirmed, via a statement from Redmond, that apps built for the new platform won't be backwards compatible:"New applications compiled specifically for Windows Phone 8 will not be made available for Windows Phone 7.x devices." It's not quite App Store numbers, but the Windows Phone Marketplace has finally managed to break the six-digit published apps barrier (making good on the promise of all those app submissions) as Microsoft just announced that its mobile users now have over 100,000 apps to choose from. And, while it may not be as big a deal as multi-core processor support, a new Start screen, or turn-by-turn navigation, Microsoft just told of two more apps that'll be popping up in the Marketplace soon. That's right, a duo of Zynga's most popular titles, Words with Friends and Draw Something, are coming to Windows Phone. Congratulations, all you Microsoft mobile aficionados, your time-wasting can now reach levels previously seen only by your iOS and Android-toting friends.

Australia's federal court has fined Apple for "deliberately" misleading customers on local 4G capabilities of its latest iPad. The Cupertino-based company recently agreed to the terms, which included AU$2.29 million fine and a cool AU$300,000 in costs. Despite its 4G claims, Apple's new iPad can't connect with existing Antipodean next-generation phone networks, although it can hook up to US-based networks. Apple offered refunds for any customers that felt deceived and even adjusted its advertising to reflect its cellular capabilities, but the judge still deemed that the company had contravened Australia's consumer law in the ensuing confusion. Fortunately, Apple still has plenty left in the bank.

At the tail end of Microsoft's marathon Windows Phone Summit keynote, the company's own Kevin Gallo said the following: "Everyone in the Windows ecosystem benefits." He was waxing poetic about the myriad new features coming to the outfit's latest and greatest mobile operating system, and nothing about his quote was incorrect. Developers will adore the shared codebase. Users will adore the newadditions to the software framework. Carriers probably won't shun the opportunity to push yet another platform this holiday season. But the one word in there that sticks out most to me is this: "Windows."
I've been wrestling with the ecosystem issue for some time, but the gravity of it has never been so evident. Starting in 2008, one could argue that it stopped being purely about hardware. Purely about design. Purely about software. Purely about partnerships. Particularly when it came to smartphones. Slate-style handsets were en vogue years ago, with design changing extremely little and software becoming ever more of a factor. But it wasn't just software in the simplest sense -- it was how the software was interconnected to every other piece of the digital ecosystem. Phones were no longer standalone devices; they were simply the most convenient entry into a rabbit hole that Microsoft's going to have a tough time digging people out of. Allow me to explain.

You know what's happening next week in Android land? Yes, it's Google I/O, and we'll be there to give you the all the details, of course. Leading up to the event, Google's just given its Android developer site a fresh new "streamlined, simplified, and refocused" look. The redesign touches on three aspects of the app development lifecycle -- design, development and distribution -- in the hopes to entice developers to "build beautiful, powerful, successful apps". Want to find out more? Check out the gallery below and hit the break for the PR.

In the latest episode of XDA TV [Adam Outler] . At first this might sound comical, but the ever-increasing power of our handhelds makes it a pretty legitimate option. It’s hard to come up with concrete uses off the top of our head, but we’re sure there’s value in being able to pull the phone out of your pocket and serve some content.
The app BotBrew Basil makes the installation process nearly automatic. It gives you point-and-click access to install the lighttpd webserver package and set the daemon to run automatically at boot time. That’s it! Of course you need to supply your own HTML to be served. [Adam] used an HTML5 website template for this.
Next you also need a way to resolve the address of the phone. In this case it’s assigned a static IP from the router, and a dynamic DNS service provides a link that maps to the router’s location. But since these phones are running Linux (at least on the lowest level) it should be pretty easy to add a cron job which will send IP address updates to the service if you want to take the ‘webserver’ out in the world with you. You can watch the entire video after the break.
Ironically this is a big hardware upgrade for [Adam's] webserver. The previous version was running from an Evalbot.

Microsoft has unveiled Windows Phone 8, promising "amazing games" and a host of new features for the next generation of its mobile operating system.
The company showed off WP8 at a developer and press event in San Francisco yesterday, and Joe Belfiore, Windows Phone product manager, has since posted the details on the Windows Phone blog.
WP8 is based on the technology core of Windows Phone 8, meaning smartphones and PCs will share networking, security, media and a file system. This, Belfiore says, "translates into better performance, more features, and new opportunities for app developers and hardware makers to innovate faster.
"Basing Windows Phone 8 on the Windows core will unleash a new wave of amazing apps and especially games."
Use of the Windows core means support for multicore processors, and devices will support 1280x768 and 1280x720 resolutions as well as MicroSD storage. Also included is support for Near Field Communication (NFC) allowing for easy sharing of documents and media with nearby devices, Internet Explorer 10, an improved digital wallet and a Nokia mapping service.
Microsoft's pitch to developers includes multitasking enhancements, and native code support for C and C++, streamlining cross-platform development and giving access to DirectX and middleware from the likes of Havok and Autodesk. At last, WP8 will introduce support for in-app purchases.
The system's start screen has been redesigned and will be fully customisable, a feature that will be rolled out to Windows Phone 7.5 devices in an update, dubbed Windows Phone 7.8. The other features, however, will only be available on new hardware, with the first WP8 handsets manufactured by Huawei, Samsung, HTC and, of course, Nokia.
So, is Microsoft making progress, or simply playing catch-up? While the close relationship with Windows is a step forward and access to DirectX and well-known middleware is intruiging, many of the new features are already available on other mobile operating systems.
The few games Belfiore mentions in his post do little to dispel the notion that Microsoft is doing more than keeping up with the Joneses, either. Gameloft is developing WP8 versions of Asphalt 7: Heat and NOVA 3; Nokia is working on bringing Zynga's Words With Friends and Draw Something to the platform. If WP8 is to succeed as a gaming platform it needs developers on board; how many will take a risk on a platform struggling to gain traction in a market dominated by iOS and Android is another matter entirely.

The mobile tail is wagging the PC dog.
Microsoft unveiled its new phone OS earlier today and as expected the platform proves just how pervasive and victorious the mobile user interface has become.
The firm has already previewed the main desktop OS, Windows 8, and it included all the swipe-able tiles and draggable icons we've come to expect from a phone OS.
So few were surprised when WinPho 8 built on the template.
The phones will feature Microsoft's new "Metro" style, which is based around touchable live tiles that update constantly. The same template is used for Windows 8.
But, of course, this is more than a cosmetic similarity. It also helps developers because the two systems share much of the same code, making it easier to write for mobile, tablet and PC.

It's rumoured to have a bendy display. But can it turn the heads of iPhone users?
Samsung has only just released its flagship Galaxy S III device, butMK Business News reckons a Galaxy Note II 'phablet' is due in October.
That is, of course, the same month that long-standing rival Apple released its iPhone 4S in last year – and that many expect an iPhone 5 to make its debut.
The new Note is set to sport a flexible unbreakable plane (UBP) display, with advanced speeds and multi-tasking functions supported by a quad-core processor.
The current Note boasts a 5.3-inch screen, and Samsung is expected to play to its strengths by designing an even larger screen for its successor.
It's also set to come with a longer battery life and shock-resistant durability, with power generated by Jelly Bean, the next in line to the Android OS throne, following on from Ice Cream Sandwich.
