Korean electronics giant LG has announced that it will not be making any further Windows Phone 7 handsets.
It came to the decision having claimed that “the total unit of Windows Phone sold in the global market is not a meaningful figure”.
Instead the company will press ahead with its future plans for Android handsets, although WPCentral does add that LG intends to “continue research and development efforts” on Microsoft’s format.
Samsung, HTC and key Microsoft partner Nokia remain as the main WP7 partners pushing forwards.

The iPad was made to do many things, but windowed multitasking wasn't one of them. Leave it to theCydia Store to provide a new app that delivers individual, rotatable, scalable, untabbed windows. Quasar, from developer Pedro Franceschi, let's you do just that across multiple apps -- without relying on home button double-taps or tricky multi-finger gestures. The video below makes it seem prettymagical, so take a look and let us know what you think.

Reviews are grouped by genre, with trailers, gameplay footage and screenshots available with a single click. iGamer is available for £1.99 per single issue, with subscriptions beginning at £1.49, from the source link below.

Over half of them only ever surf the mobile web.
Norwegian search engine Opera has been furiously driving its mobile efforts by introducing the Opera Mini browser to feature phones, adding mobile payments and updating its app store.
Given the campaign zest, it's unsurprising that – according toTechCrunch – Opera says Mini now has over 168.8 million users. Interestingly, 56 per cent of those only ever browse via mobile, demonstrating the impact of the migration from PCs.
The mobile-only web search figure increased for developing companies including Egypt, Bangladesh and Brazil which boast mobile-only rates of 72 per cent, 69 per cent and 65 per cent.
Additionally, Opera claims 35 per cent of users are likely to purchase music and games via their mobile devices than those who use another browser.
To add to the firm's impressive numbers, Mini users viewed over 117 billion pages last month, up 64 per cent on last year to generate a total of over 1.9 billion MB of data.

When Steve Wozniak talks mobile, people love to listen. Last time we checked in, he was lauding some of Android's finer points, and now he's raining praise on Windows Phone. In an interview with A New Domain, the Apple co-founder was all too happy to share his recent positive experiences with the Espoo / Redmond collaboration. In particular, Woz waxes about how intuitive the interface is, and how naturally apps lead you around. He goes on to say how there's nothing he's seen that isn't more beautiful (than iOS and Android) on the Windows system, before claiming Android is "no contest" when it comes to the interface. It's not all lemonade and roses, however, as he then admits he's no fan of the voice control functionality compared to the other two platforms. When pushed to admit what he uses as default, it's still the iPhone -- two of them in fact -- but Woz's ability to see the best in all mobile operating systems will be sure to further confirm his status as one of tech's most liked. Head down to the source to hear for yourself.

An article at the NY Times explains the how the most profitable tech company in the world becomes even more profitable by finding ways to avoid or minimize taxes. Quoting: 'Apple's headquarters are in Cupertino, Calif. By putting an office in Reno, just 200 miles away, to collect and invest the company's profits, Apple sidesteps state income taxes on some of those gains. California's corporate tax rate is 8.84 percent. Nevada's? Zero. ... As it has in Nevada, Apple has created subsidiaries in low-tax places like Ireland, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and the British Virgin Islands — some little more than a letterbox or an anonymous office — that help cut the taxes it pays around the world. ... Without such tactics, Apple's federal tax bill in the United States most likely would have been $2.4 billion higher last year, according to a recent study (PDF) by a former Treasury Department economist, Martin A. Sullivan. As it stands, the company paid cash taxes of $3.3 billion around the world on its reported profits of $34.2 billion last year, a tax rate of 9.8 percent.

"While downloading and storing digital media with online service providers has become commonplace — more so than purchasing DVDs and CDs at physical retail stores — it's not very easy to transfer digital files from individual to another, usually because of copyright laws. Some digital distributors have systems for limiting usage and distribution of its products from the original purchaser to others, but often times, transferring a copyright-protected file from one device to another can result in the file being unplayable or totally inaccessible. Apple believes it has a solution to this issue: A gift-giving platform where users have a standardized way for buying, sending and receiving media files from a provider (iTunes) between multiple electronic devices (iPhones, iPads). The process is simply called, 'Gifting.'"

New stats from Strategy Analytics show that Samsung shipped 93.5m phones in Q1 compared to Nokia's 82.7m.
Last year, Samsung became the world's leading smartphone maker as its Galaxy range outpunched iPhone and RIM's fading BlackBerry. It also took advantage of the decline in Nokia's Symbian platform and its nascent WinPho range.
The South Korean OEM shipped 44.5 million smartphones in the quarter, giving it about 31 percent of the market.
That's impressive, but the maths shows that it still sells more feature phones. Samsung has been careful to nurture more affordable Android devices and the mid-tier range based on its own bada OS.

Further evidence of Apple's unstoppable drive beyond consumer markets.
Mobile enterprise solutions firm Good Technology claims the iPhone 4S bagged 37 per cent of total enterprise activations in Q1 2012, which is followed by the iPad 2 with 17.7 per cent.
Meanwhile the new iPad – released on March 14th – secured 4.3 per cent of activations in Q1 and 12.1 per cent in March alone, demonstrating the rapid impact the device has made on the market.
The Motorola Droid was the number one Android device, though it only accounted for 1.6 per cent of all activations, which puts it in seventh place for the quarter overall.
Additionally, Android smartphones accounted for 26.1 per cent of all activations, while tablets came in at 2.7 per cent.
It all goes to show the major shifts taking place in the enterprise world. Ten years ago, it was the province of Microsoft Mobile, before giving way to RIM.

Targeting vulnerable Android apps.
Social media accessed via mobile became a hot spot for malware attacks in Q1, according to web and mobile security firm AVG.
Unsurprisingly hackers focused their viral assault on Android, encouraged by the open nature of the platform and the huge number of variations implemented by different OEMs and operators.
Android has been plagued by malware scares recently, causing Google to remove over 100 contagious apps from Google Play.
Yuval Ben-Itzhak, CTO, AVG, said: "Cyber criminals are finding it very convenient to distribute their malware straight to a mobile device via these networks. The growth of the Android platform has been phenomenal, which has not gone unnoticed with cyber criminals who have discovered it to be a lucrative target for their malware."
Twitter has over 140 million users and Facebook has over 900 million, and hackers are targeting the networks because of the opportunity to access the vast amount of data and data stored on them.

We've seen some pretty clear indications that the Kindle Fire was rapidly gaining market share among Android tablets, and ComScore is now out with a new report that indicates it recently crossed a big milestone. According to the research firm, the Fire's market share in the US fully doubled from December to February, with it standing at 54.4 percent as of the end of the month. Counted together, the Galaxy Tab family sits in second at 15.4 percent, while the Motorola Xoom and Asus Transformer come in at 7 and 6.3 percent, respectively. Of course, the Kindle Fire isn't quite your ordinary Android tablet, so this is likely better news for Amazon than Google. In addition to that, ComScore also looked at the browsing habits of tablet users, and unsurprisingly found that larger screens tended to lead to more content consumption, with 10-inch tablets boasting a 39 percent higher consumption rate than 7-inch devices. You can find all the numbers at the source link below.

Apple's iPad is still seeing record growth according to the NPD Group
According to a recent study by the NPD Group, one-in-four iPad owners say the tablet is their first Apple product. 33 percent (37 million) of homes in the United States own one Apple product, while 69 percent of that group own iPods.
"iPad sales are growing much faster than any other Apple product has this soon after launch," said Ben Arnold, director of industry analysis at NPD. ""In fact, one-in-five Apple owner households has one- nearly equivalent to the number that own an Apple computer. This demonstrates the appeal of both the new form factor and Apple's app ecosystem."
82 percent of Apple consumers say the iPod was their first product, but recently consumers have been pegging the iPhone or iPad as their entry device into the Apple ecosystem. 70 percent of long-term Apple users said the iPod was their entry device, while only 57 percent in the last two years can say the same. On average Apple households own 2.4 Apple devices. Oddly enough, 58 percent of Mac owning homes also have a PC, and 30 percent of Apple enthusiasts own a non-Apple smartphone.
"Should more households become multiple Apple product homes, these platforms will become even more important in the acquisition and sharing of content between devices. Forty percent of electronics shoppers say owning devices in the same brand family is an important purchase factor. As consumers look for greater interoperability between devices and more brands become aligned with platforms, we could see fewer multi-brand ecosystems in the household," added Arnold.
The Apple Ecosystem Study had over 3,000 respondents.

Tech boffin site Anandtech has put Intel's Medfield foray into mobile phones under the microscope with a look at the first Intel-powered Android phone.
The Lava Xolo X900 is a high-end Android smartphone aimed at the Indian market, based heavily on Intel's own Form Factor Reference Design (FFRD) for the Medfield mobile chip. Anandtech put the phone through a series of benchmarks in order to see how it stacks up against the ARM-powered incumbents.
Running a special build of Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the x86 Atom-based phone can run most applications - even translating ARM code if native code has been used in the applications. In terms of compatibility, Anandtech's Brian Klug said: "Almost everything is perfect."
The applications that didn't work were few, including the latest Flash 11 and the Netflix application. "I wager your average Android user wouldn't be able to tell that this is running on a completely different architecture," said Klug.
In terms of performance, Intel's Medfield does not appear to deliver a knock-out blow. Klug called the Atom Z2460 "a competent dual-core Cortex A9 competitor," but noted that it couldn't stand up to the vanguard Cortex A15 such as the Qualcomm 'Krait' architecture in the HTC One S.
Anandtech said that battery life was a little lower than the average but this was down to the Intel reference design using a lower than average capacity battery. Normalising for battery capacity, Krug said: "In terms of power efficiency, the phone is distinctly middle of the road."
The phone/chip was let down in a good few benchmarks of GPU performance since the chip uses a fairly pedestrian PowerVR SGX 540.
"On the one hand it's a good thing that you can't tell an Intel smartphone apart from one running an ARM based SoC, on the other hand it does nothing to actually sell the Intel experience," wrote Krug.
He went on to suggest that the Medfield chip was no flagship product and that it needed Intel's cutting-edge 22nm chip fabrication technology and a faster GPU to make the device "better than the rest."

83 per cent would change their network if their device's privacy was at risk.
Mobile security provider AdaptiveMobile surveyed consumers globally to discover the results. It also claims three-quarters of consumers would pay premium for privacy-protected apps, which is a wake up call for developers looking to monetise their apps.
59 per cent feel like they don't have control of their phone's security, which makes them hesitant about introducing new apps and software to their device. Meanwhile, one in six consumers refuse to download apps for fear that privacy could be compromised.
Ciaran Bradley, VP, Handset Security, said: "Many operators do provide guidelines about security, but it is clear that consumers can still feel uncertain. This research highlights opportunities for operators to both increase revenue and lower churn, achieving the twin – and often irreconcilable – goals for MNOs and MVNOs.
"Consumers today are smart but need reassurance from their operators. If users browsing apps from the App Store, or Google Play do not feel that their security is in safe hands, they will either refuse to download applications, or vote with their feet and find another operator.
"However, users who feel safe in their choice of operator will not only stay with that provider, but may also pay extra for security services, which is a highly desirable outcome for all concerned."

Google built a 'clean room' version of Java and did not use Sun's intellectual property, Google's executive chairman, Eric Schmidt, testified in court Tuesday. Schmidt said its use of Java in Android was 'legally correct.' On this day seven of the trial, Schmidt gave the jury a brief history of Java, describing its release as 'an almost religious moment.' He told the jury that Google had once hoped to partner with Sun to develop Android using Java, but that negotiations broke off because Google wanted Android to be open source, and Sun was unwilling to give up that much control over Java. Instead, Schmidt said, Google created the 'clean room' version of Java that didn't use Sun's protected code. Its engineers invented 'a completely different approach' to the way Java worked internally, Schmidt testified."

Apple net profits for Q2 2012 at $11.6 billion; up 94% year-on-year
Apple has released its Q2 earnings report for fiscal year 2012, showing quarterly net profits have nearly doubled from last year to reach $11.6 billion.
This is an increase of 94 percent from last year's Q2 profit of $6 billion.
Revenues for Q2 increased from $24.7 to $39.2 billion year-on-year, and Apple predicts Q3 revenue to be about $34 billion this year.
These figures were driven by a massive surge in sales for iOS devices, with iPhone sales up by 88 percent to 35.1 million units, and iPad sales skyrocketing by 151 percent to 11.7 million.
“We’re thrilled with sales of over 35 million iPhones and almost 12 million iPads in the March quarter,” said Apple's CEO, Tim Cook.

Turning to BBM et al to save money and organise riots.
Research from www.MyVoucherCodes.co.uk found 81 per cent of UK phone users had downloaded smartphone apps, or activated services, that allowed them to send ‘free’ messages between friends.
These apps proved more popular than 'free' voice apps, which 48 per cent had downloaded.
Of those who used OTT messaging, 41 per cent admitted they did so as an alternative to traditional text - even though 92 per cent of respondents claim to have ‘free SMS’ as part of their tariff.
Bit weird then, that 53 per cent explained that they wanted to ‘save money’ on their monthly phone bill. Meanwhile 21 per cent claim to find the services ‘easier to use’ than SMS; while 18 per cent claim they use the services when their network signal is poor.

Up 88 per cent year on year to drive quarterly profit to $11.6 billion.
When will it ever end? Well, it has to at some point. But until then the Apple money machine just keeps on rolling.
Its new financials are amazing - revenues at $$39.2 billion, compared to US$24.7 billion a year ago, with profits nearly doubled to $11.6 billion, compared to US$6 billion last year.
In addition to those iPhone sales, Apple sold 11.8 million iPads during the quarter, a 151 per cent year on year rise. It also sold 4m Macs and 7.7 million iPods. And guess what? Its iPod sales were actually down 15 per cent unit on the year-ago quarter.
Overall, that makes 365m iOS devices since the launch of the first iPhone in 2007, including 67m iPads.
Apple also confirmed its app store now has more than 600k apps available, and that theiTunes Store as a whole generated $1.9bn in revenue last quarter.
