Apple's post-Jobs chief Tim Cook announced that some of the company's mountain of cash will be used to pay a dividend to shareholders and initiate a US$10 billion share buyback scheme.
The move makes a break from the policy of famously tight Steve Jobs that refused to discuss the prospect of sharing profits with shareholders, despite record profits.
Apple will now return US$45 billion to holders of Apple stock and marks the first payment of a dividend since Apple's lean times in the mid 1990s. Cook said that the payout still meant the company had a sizable war chest for "strategic opportunities" read acquisitions.
The payment of a dividend also makes Apple stock more attractive for institutional investors that typically require a dividend in order to hold onto stock. "We hope it will broaden the investor base to attract new investors who don't currently have Apple stock," Cook said.
Such is the size of the dividend that Apple will end up forking out just under $10 billion every year and will make the firm one of the highest dividend paying firms in the US.
No doubt this will propel the stock to even further heady heights than the current $600 price tag, already making Apple the most valuable publicly traded company in the world.

Vietnamese scammers rip off One and One Story and sell it on the Apple App Store.
Mattia Traverso developed the puzzler as a Flash game, and scored a big hit with fans of browser based fun.
But as he prepared to launch the game on iOS he was shocked to discover it was already on the Apple App Store courtesy of what he thinks it a Vietnamese developer
He told Kotaku.com: "The original version was made in Flash, which is fairly easy to decompile. They just took the old .swf, took the graphics and probably rewrote the code."
It's not the first example of this kind of thing. Kotaku cites recent examples such as Pokemon Yellow app and the row between Zynga and NimbleBit over Ridiculous Fishing and its clone Ninja Fishing.
Unfortunately indy developers with a relative lack of funds and commercial nous are particularly susceptible to this worrying trend. Apple is reportedly looking into the matter.

Seven-inch device could unveiled in May at $149
Just weeks ago it was reported that Taiwan's Asus would follow Samsung, HTC and Motorola and become the latest maker of an official Google device.
That was a rumour, but now Androidandme has quoted a supply chain source that claims the Asus partnership is a "done deal", with Google planning to launch "a tablet of the highest quality."
The Nexus tablet was initially expected to feature quad-core Tegra 3 processors, retailing between $199-249, but sources say the Tegra has been removed to reduce the tablet to between $149-$199.
The price cut would make it a truly affordable low-end option for new buyers, undercutting the world's number two selling tablet, the Kindle Fire, which is also powered by Android.
The device is expected to be unveiled in May at the CTIA Wireless show, potentially running on Android Jelly Bean, which is also expected to be released in Q2.

Spark Trophies will soon be getting a long-needed overhaul in both design and tablet support. Like Spark 360, expect to see a tighter layout, as well as bug fixes and enhanced functionality on tablet devices.
While I’m on the subject, I should probably discuss Account Regions – a feature that’s been around for a while, but which I suspect may be misleading and/or confusing.
Spark Trophies has the ability to retrieve its data from us.playstation.com, or uk.playstation.com – the US and EU servers, respectively. When you switch account regions in Account Settings, this is what you’re selecting – where to get the information. Note that you don’t have to belong to either region – from my experience, you can use either. I have noticed, however, that PSN EU tends to be more reliable, and faster.
So why not use PSN Europe by default? The problem is that many users find that one or the other is missing certain games. I’m not sure what causes this, but my best guess is that it’s some quirk in how PSN syncs trophies with the web sites and/or availability of games across regions.
If you find that Trophies isn’t working as well as it should, first thing you can try is switching regions – that is, unless you discover missing trophies. If that happens, you can always switch back.

Unless your common sense is blinded by Apple fanaticism you'll know that trying to pick up an Apple product on the day of release at an Apple Store is a fools errand.
The only thing you'll get for your troubles is an insincere head shake from a smarmy paid-to-be-polite staffer and the faint sense that you're about to buy your way into a hipster cult. Instead, those in the market for an ego boost and a shiney new iDevice will find they'll have much better luck online.
If you're anything like us, you'll want to minimise the time it takes between deciding you want the new iPad and confirming payment, before the old voice of reason starts whispering lies like "you can't afford it", "do you really need another one? You already have an iPad 2" and "You won't be able to feed your kids for at least a month if you get one."
So, we've thrown together a list of alternative places you can get the new ipad and stuck it below. Click fast, ignore the voices and think of how cool you'll look on the train...
As always, if you have a preferred retailer not on the list let us know and we'll add it.

Today is the day many have been patiently, or not so patiently, waiting for. The new iPad saunters onto shelves around much of the globe, and into the sweaty palms of the "gotta-have-its." So, were you dazzled by that display? Or tempted by the LTE and new graphics chip? Maybe you're upgrading, or treating the partner (by treating yourself)? Perhaps you were hoping for the rumored smaller device, or just gotta have something Android. Whatever camp you fall into we want to know about it, tell us

While it may not be the good news the Android army was hoping for, TWC's got some Big Apple-sized bits to share. Via its Untangled blog, Time Warner announced it's finally adding local channels to itsiPhone / iPad app and TWCTV site, including CBS, NBC, FOX, ABC and Univision (because you can never have enough novelas). Unfortunately, the goodies won't be up for everyone's viewing pleasure, as the additions are only for folks within the NYC boroughs. That said, the cable giant plans to add "a few more markets by the end of the year." Want to find out if your favorite local news show made the cut? The full list can be found at the source link below.

Are we shocked to see an untethered iOS 5.1 jailbreak for the new iPad? Not so much. Are we surprised to see it arrive so quick? Hell, yes. The iPad 2's untethered jailbreak took an eternity, whereas this new tunnel seems to have been dug during one fleeting Friday night. The hacker to thank is i0n1c, aka Stefan Esser -- a man who moves so fast his YouTube clip reportedly had 28 likes before it had even finished uploading. Just leap that final fence, Stefan, by releasing your jailbreak to the public, and we shall re-christen you bi0n1c. (Unless you want to keep your current handle, which would also be fine.)

As the new iPad launches fans everywhere are rushing to pick one up, or are they?
Today marks the launch of Apple's new Retina-enhanced iPad, with the industry watching to see if Apple can break records again with the new model of its best-selling tablet. Competitors continue to release other options for consumers with Google's Android OS and Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8 giving manufacturers the ability to sell their own "iPad killer". Unfortunately for them, Canaccord Securities analyst Mike Walkley told investors that he believes Apple's domination will continue unchecked.
"We believe Apple has extended its leadership position in the fast growing tablet market, and we have increased our 2012 and 2013 iPad tablet share estimates," Walkley wrote, according to BGR. "We believe the new iPad has raised the bar relative to competing tablets with impressive hardware specs, competitive pricing, and the leading software ecosystem of over 200k iPad-specific applications. At MWC, our meetings with Android OEMs focused on smartphones as tablet OEMs indicated difficulty competing with the iPad 2, let alone the new iPad."
Canaccord believes Apple will sell 65.6 million iPads in 2012, up from 55.9 million in 2011. Walkley has estimated that Apple could sell 90.6 million iPads in 2013, up from his previous estimate of 79.7 million.
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster concurs, estimating sales of 60 million iPads in 2011. Apple Insider reports that Munster expects Apple to sell over 1 million iPads within the first 24 hours of launch.
Early this morning, fans were lined up at Apple Stores and other big-box retailers, like Best Buy, to pick up the new model. 450 people lined up outside of Apple's Ginza store in Tokyo, according to the Associated Press. The Apple Store in Hong Kong used an online lottery with preset times for winners to keep crowds down. TheBoston Globe reported that 200 people waited outside of the Apple Store there. On the other hand, Business Insider noted that while crowds massed around the larger stores, many smaller retail outlets had no lines waiting for their iPads.
Can Apple continue to hold lightning in a bottle, or can Google and Microsoft catch up this year?

Apple has launched 1080p high-definition movies on iTunes as the high-resolution iPad 3 and Apple TV devices arrive.
Previously the best Apple offered was 720p video, considerably less than that offered by the humble Blu-ray disc. Now in the iTunes 10.6 Store preferences, users can select which version of the movie downloads the user wants, either 720p or 1080p.
Apple is also encoding the higher resolution versions of the iTunes movies with a more advanced version of the H264 video compression standard which results in only a modest growth in file size.
Tech site Arstechnica set out to compare the new 1080p iTunes movies with traditional Blu-ray discs. Given that the downloaded files are much smaller than Blu-rays due to the more sophisticated encoding, Ars was nevertheless impressed and said the result was pretty close.
That said Blu-rays still have the advantage overall. Ars noted that the image quality of Blu-ray is still better and also noted that the physical disc format often offers uncompressed audio, language options and special features.

Android tablets are expected to become the leading devices on the market by 2015, taking over from iPad's leading sales, according to IDC.
However, ZDNet says Android Honeycomb for tablets didn't cope well when it was first launched, often crashing before eventually getting stabilised by Google. Now, history seems to be repeating itself with Honeycomb's successor, Ice Cream Sandwich.
Results show that Google apps will crash at least two-three times a day when using Android ICS-powered tablet, the ASUS Transformer Prime.
It's hardly the kind of experience users will be wanting when using the tablet's quad-core power, though it seems the blame can't be attributed to ASUS, as the Google fault runs on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 too.
Additionally, Gmail is highlighted as the worst kind of Google offering, crashing the most out of others, ejecting the user to the home screen.

Up from $400 before Christmas.
The new iPad was only released in earlier on today – or last night depending which time zone you're in – but Apple's shares reached a record high of $600 last night ahead of the release, according to sister publication PCR.
The company experienced a two per cent growth during yesterday's trading, before levelling at $585.
It's a large rise from Christmas time when stocks were at $400, even though the original iPad and iPad 2 sold around 15 million units during Q4.
The report cites analysts as quoted by the FT that expect Apple shares to rise to over $700.

Apple have today released the Ipad 3 in both Black and White Flavours, those wanting to buy multiples are flat out of luck as there is a restriction of 2 to any customer. The big new feature is the Retina display and improved connectivity. The iPad 3 is retailing at $599 for the 32GB version and $699 for the 64GB version. The upside of the iPad 3 release is that the iPad 2 is now at a cheaper price in the USA and UK. How long before it is jailbroken?

As we saw the iPhone 4's release, a massive bump in screen resolution means that plenty of apps need to be updated to fully take advantage of all those extra pixels, and today has seen a few big name ones get optimized for the new iPad's Retina display. The biggest of those is Amazon's Kindle app, which now promises sharper fonts than ever, along with a few other changes including the ability to switch between books stored on your device and in the cloud. Also getting a Retina-friendly update is Evernote, which offers improved text editing in addition to the display tweak, plus the otherwise unchanged Vimeo, and Weather Pro, which now boasts high-resolution maps. Of course, those are just among the first of many -- we're guessing you won't have to wait too long for most of your favorites to be similarly updated.

Well, it looks like you won't have to wait until 8:00am tomorrow to possibly get your hands on the new iPad after all. Walmart has now confirmed that it will begin selling the 16GB WiFi-only model tonight at 12:01am local time at all of its 24-hour stores. That includes both the black and white versions, as well as the now $399 iPad 2 if the whole Retina display thing isn't for you. Of course, there's no guarantees that you'll get one if you show up -- Walmart says it only has a "limited supply."

Those multi-gesture passcode locks on Android phones that give users (and their spouses) fits apparently present quite a challenge for the FBI as well. Frustrated by a swipe passcode on the seized phone of an alleged gang leader, FBI officials have requested a search warrant that would force Google to 'provide law enforcement with any and all means of gaining access, including login and password information, password reset, and/or manufacturer default code ("PUK"), in order to obtain the complete contents of the memory of cellular telephone.' The request is part of a case involving an alleged gang leader and human trafficker named Dante Dears in California. Dears served several years in prison for his role in founding a gang in California called PhD, and upon his release he went back to his activities with the gang, according to the FBI's affidavit."

A location message sent from a stolen iPad by an anti-theft application turns out to be insufficient evidence to issue a search warrant for the Dutch authorities. A Dutch man reported his iPad as stolen to the Dutch authorities last month. Despite the fact that the rightful owner was able to locate his iPad within hours of the theft, thanks to the anti-theft application he had installed, the Dutch authorities did not issue a warrant to perform a search. According to the prosecutors, a search warrant is 'a very heavy measure,' that should only be used when there is 'sufficient suspicion.' The theft report by the owner was viewed as 'no objective evidence' in the case."
