2012 is still young, yet it's already shaping up to be a bad year for privacy and security on the mobile front. Apple found itself embroiled in a bit of a brouhaha over the iPhone address book and an app calledPath. And, of course, Google was put under the microscope when mobile Safari was found to have asecurity flaw that its mobile ads were exploiting. Then, earlier this week, it was discovered that granting iOS apps access to your location could also expose your photos. Now it's been discovered that Android also exposes your images, though, it's doing so without asking for any permissions at all. While Apple was masking photo access with other permissions, Google is simply leaving your pics vulnerable as a part of a design quirk that came from the OS's reliance on microSD cards. Both companies have acknowledged the flaws and have said they're currently working on fixes. We're just hoping things start to quiet down soon, though -- our mobile operating systems are running out of personal data to expose. Check out the source links for more details.

For a company so focused on secrecy, Apple never really did all that good of a job keeping its connection with Corning under wraps. We've always suspected that the company enlisted the Gorilla Glass maker for the iPhone, though it didn't really go out of its way to admit it -- even going so far as omitting the New York-based company from its 2011 suppliers list. Cupertino offered it a little love today, however, giving Corning a nod in its chipper job creation report. While it didn't actually mention Gorilla Glass by name on the page, Apple was happy to talk up the "Corning employees in Kentucky and New York who create the majority of the glass for iPhone."

If you've ever downloaded an app from iTunes then congratulations, you are a part of history. Just a few minutes ago Apple notched its 25 billionth download, thanking all involved for getting there, and of course (like it did for 10 billion, and 1 billion), gifting the lucky individual who crossed the line with another $10k gift card. Not sure what you would buy with $10,000 in App Store bucks? That's ok, since you probably don't have it, but don't forget -- our official Engadget and Distro apps are free, and will love you back all the same. Remember way back in 2008 when all this was fresh and new? Relive the iPhone SDK press conference via our liveblog right here.

News Corp-owned Skybet last night invited punters to lay down money on what features they think will be included in the upcoming iPad 3.
But only hours after going live, the firm decided to pull the plug.
Bets on offer included whether the iPad 3 will feature a Retina display (1/8), an NFC chip (4/1) or an SD card slot (12/1).
Another more off-the-wall option asked if it would have a carbon fibre backplate (6/5 yes, 8/13 no).
“We suspended betting last night after an immediate run of money on many of the markets,” a Skybet statement given to 9to5Macread. “Within a half an hour of the markets opening we took a flood of money including a string of very chunky, three-figure bets.
“If the money is correct, then the new hardware will definitely not have a new carbon fibre casing, will not be called the iPad 2S and will have 128GB of storage!”

While marketing costs fall by 59 per cent.
Mobile app marketing firm Fiksu recorded an all-time high for downloads from the Apple App Store in January, the result of selling millions of iPhones and iPads.
Meanwhile, daily downloads peaked at 6.79 million as users tested out their new devices, which was up 12 per cent from the 6.04 million reached in December.
Despite the download growth, Fiksu says there was a significant dip in mobile app marketing costs in January, falling 59 per cent to an average of $1.14 from the record high of $1.81 in December.
It's a significant development for marketers to take heed of, as they can benefit from the dip in spend post-Christmas, whilst still achieving optimum results.
Micah Adler, CEO, Fiksu, said: "We've observed many app brands invest heavily in the fourth quarter, seeking extreme growth during the holiday season, then reduce spending in January as they evaluate their marketing programs for the New Year and focus on version upgrades for their apps.

Leaked part listings reveals alternative identity.
Earlier this week, Apple announced it has something to show off at a special event on March 7th and the general consensus is that it will be the iPad 3.
However, the 'iPad 3' will actually be christened the iPad HD, according to a report from gizmodo, which reveals leaked part listings from accessory manufacturer Griffin and Belkin.
The name could make sense as Apple's next-gen tablet is expected to come with a 2048 x 1536 HD display, LTE and a quad-core processor, which would offer a significant overhaul on the iPad 2.
If the document is genuine, it wouldn't be the first time the industry has been corrected, the 'iPhone 5' turned out to be the iPhone 4S.

While nearly half wouldn't consider any tablet that isn't made by Apple.
The iPad 3 – if that is its real name – isn't due for unveiling untilMarch 7th, but 29 per cent of US consumers have already declared their plans to buy one of the next-generation Apple tablets, according to mobile ad firm InMobi.
Additionally, two-thirds that intend to buy an iPad 3 would also consider buying an iPad or iPad 2 at a reduced price instead.
Price isn't much of a deterrent either with 50 per cent willing to pay over $500, however 57 per cent would choose on older model if the device costs over $599.
44 per cent of users wouldn't choose any other brand tablet instead of the iPad, although 27 per cent would consider the Samsung Galaxy and 14 per cent would consider the Kindle.
Meanwhile, 51 per cent would choose iPad 3 for entertainment use instead of business of education.

The iOS spinoff Battlefield 3: Aftershock was abruptly removed from the App Store last month, when EA decided to "re-evaluate" the app following complaints about its quality. It has since been re-evaluated to death.
An EA spokesperson told Vox Games that the game will not be returning to the App Store. "In the interest of bringing consumers only the highest level of quality mobile entertainment," EA said, "EA Mobile has decided to suspend development and support of Battlefield 3: Aftershock and refocus its resources on other titles."
The servers will remain active through March 31, for those of you who want to enjoy the game as long as possible. Of course, the relatively small number of people enjoying Aftershock is the whole issue.

The NSA decided it wanted to have its own go at producing a secure Android smartphone that could encrypt communications to levels necessary for national security. Project "Fishbowl" constructed 100 handsets from off-the-shelf components that were secure enough that staffers could use them without speaking in code. All conversations are conducted across an IPsec VPN with a secure, real-time transport protocol for encrypting the voice at both ends, with the VoIP server being housed inside an NSA facility. It's part of a program to get handset makers to build this kit so the Information Assurance Directorate doesn't have to navigate the interoperability hurdles between each company's tech. The agency has launched a how-to for any manufacturer looking for a large Government contract to produce Fishbowl phones on a larger scale, although they'll probably have to change the name to something more threatening like MK-Ultraphone or the Phoneadelphia Experiment.

Firm unimpressed with current processor offerings on the market and decides to play the waiting game.
Sony broke up with Ericsson last year in a bid to start war in the smartphone battlefield and take on leaders Apple and Samsung.
The firm debuted its Xperia P and Xperia U phones at the start of MWC, boasting connected device functionality and dual-core processors.
However, quad-core phones are the latest flavour of the month and Stephen Sneeden, product marketing manager for Sony Mobile, opened up about the firm's strategy for joining the quad-core market in an interview with CNET Asia.
He said: "In the second-half of the year [Sony] is moving to the Cortex A15 architecture, which we feel outperforms the current quad-core architecture."
Sneeden continued by saying Sony is likely to release quad-core smartphones in early 2013, when the processing technology matches the battery efficiency.

41MP Symbian device takes home the gold.
Nokia's plans to become supreme ruler of the smartphone world are off to a good start, even if it is down to a Symbian device and not its flagship Windows Phone OS.
The firm's new 41MP 808 Pureview device has been awarded 'Best New Mobile Handset, Device or Tablet at Mobile World Congress 2012', which was decided by a panel of industry specialists.
Speaking to Nokia Conversations, Jo Harlow, EVP smart devices, said: "It’s a fantastic award because it signifies that consumer experience counts. It’s about tech, but it’s about how tech is used to make a consumer have a fantastic experience. The imaging is fantastic; the audio is fantastic; the navigation technology is fantastic.
"These are first signals that we are executing against our strategy. That we’re back. That we’re bringing great products to our consumers – and that this is just the beginning. There’s lots more to come."

And over 1bn downloads from the Android Market each month.
Google's Android OS is seemingly going from strength to strength, securing 550,000 activations per day in summer 2011, which was up to 700,000 at the end of the year.
Now, Google's mobile SVP Andy Rubin says Android is receiving over 850,000 mobile activations each day.
It's an enormous leap in the space of two months, showing the speedy adoption rate of the operating system, given that it took half a year to achieve the same results in 2011.
Additionally, Rubin went on to reveal the Android Market has 450,000 apps, which up from 150,000 this time last year. The app store is also receiving more than one billion monthly downloads.
Last month, we reported that Google's mobile ad revenues are set to hit $4 billion this year, though it looks like that figure will be significantly beaten if Android can keep up its current pace.

UK classifieds website rolls onto iOS.
Gumtree is an outlet to give almost anything exposure, with cars, jobs, and properties among the things promoted on the website by businesses and consumers alike.
The firm claims to have over one million ads live at any one time and decided the next step to further its business was via mobile, iOS in particular.
Users will be able to search for items, contact sellers and create favourites via the app, which is free for iPhone and iPod Touch.
Additionally, the app has received more than 300,000 downloads in the first two weeks since its launch.
Hamish Stone, Gumtree.com, said: "With so many of us living our lives on-the-go, the Gumtree.com app allows iPhone users to view, contact, and buy at the click of a button - no matter where they are.

If Google can get its strategy correct.
Talking at the MWC, Google chief Eric Schmidt revealed that despite the firm's desirable position, around five billion people around the world still haven't completed a Google search.
Additionally, he said that Android phones will reach feature phone prices next year as part of the "universal smartphone revolution".
Schmidt, claims: "A mobile experience at least at the level of today will be available to almost everybody, at a fraction of the price. In 12 years, handsets are going to be 20 times faster, which means phones that cost $400 now will be available for $20. If Google gets this right, there will be an Android in every pocket. At our current growth rate, this is possible.”
He also went on to say that future plans will bring its Chrome browser and the Android OS closer together.
