More than one thousand customers vent frustration at unplayable fake game approved by Apple
Another Pokemon app scam has hit the Apple store after an unofficial game based on the franchise that doesn’t play any content was approved for sale.
Charging 69p, a fake version of Pokemon Yellow was uploaded to the marketplace, claiming to be the real thing. It is currently 4th in the UK top paid apps chart, whilst it is rated 2nd in the US.
Developed by Daniel Burford, without permission from Nintendo or the Pokemon company, the description details fabricated press reviews rating the game at five stars.
Reviews of the title reveal that the app is indeed a scam, with more than one thousand US customers claiming that the game crashes immediately after it is opened.
“This app doesn’t work at all, it’s a complete waste of time,” reads one review.

Apple's contract manufacturer Hon Hai Precision Industry aka Foxconn has reportedly increased the wages paid to factory workers by up to 25 per cent.
What looks like the result of increasing public awareness and media coverage of working conditions at Apple's Chinese factories, a Reuters report says that an entry level position earns 1,800 yuan a month, up from 900 three years ago.
A statement by the company pointed out that wagers were already far higher than the local minimum wage and said that in addition to the wage increase the company would "provide more training opportunities and learning time" in order to "set a good example for the Chinese manufacturing industry."
It's quite likely that a number of stakeholders have taken part in the move including Apple and the Chinese authorities given that Foxconn is something of a darling of the local industry, manufacturing as it does one of the world's most iconic hardware products in Apple devices.

PowerTrekk solution uses water, fuel cell and battery pack to charge device.
Fuel cell tech developer myFC has created PowerTrekk, a water-based phone charging option that makes using an electrical power source unnecessary.
Of course, that doesn't mean you can charge your phone using H20 alone.
Instead, PowerTrekk comprises a portable battery pack and fuel cell or 'puck'. After adding approximately a tablespoon of water, and connecting a USB-A lead to the PowerTrekk unit and phone, 'instant power' is generated.
The solution has been designed for outdoors enthusiasts and emerging markets, where electricity may be in short supply. It also charges cameras and GPS devices too.
Björn Westerholm, CEO at myFC, said: "From now on, you do not have to rely on having an electricity grid nearby. PowerTrekk water charger gives your mobile phone power anywhere at any time.

Amazon looks to extinguish the glory of well hung 9.7-inch iPad 2.
The current Kindle Fire measures at seven-inches, but that hasn't stopped it from shipping four million units in under two months.
Now, Amazon plans on moving to bigger and better things by creating a ten-inch Kindle Fire, according to the China Times, citing that Foxconn may receive samples by March.
This would put it in direct competition with premium tablet, the iPad 2, which measures at 9.7-inches.
Additionally, BGR claims the report came after an analyst said Amazon was concentrating on a upgraded seven-inch tablet and a nine-inch tablet for release halfway through the year.
Last week, we reported Apple may be working on a smaller screened iPad, so it seems Amazon may have taken heed of the news.

Feature phone minority losers.
New data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech shows that smartphones contributed 71.4 per cent of mobile phone sales in the 12 weeks ending January 22nd.
This stunning growth pushed smartphone ownership past 50 per cent.
Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar, said: “For the first time ever, you are now in the minority if you don’t own a smartphone.
"With more people jumping on the bandwagon, there is huge opportunity for both retailers and manufacturers."
The stats also reflected the fightback by iOS after a period of Android creep. Kantar said that Apple its share of the British market from 21.7 per cent a year ago to 29.1 per cent now.

So, have you been following the iPad dispute in China? Wondering exactly who or what this Proviewcompany is and what they're doing with a trademark on the iPad name? Well, wonder no more friends. The company actually stylized the name as iPAD, and it stood for Internet Personal Access Device. They hit the market way back in 1998 and weren't tablets, but all-in-one PCs that looked an awful lot like another machine that debuted that year -- the iMac. Over the course of a decade Proview produced between 10,000 and 20,000 of he 15-inch CRT desktops, before collapsing in 2010 and abandoning its Shenzhen plant, thanks in part to the economic crisis engulfing the globe. Most of its assets, including the iPAD trademark are now the property of eight different banks and its debts exceed $1 billion, which probably explains why the company is demanding so much money from Apple. For more details about the original iPAD and a photo tour of the deserted factory hit up the source links.

The team behind indie start up Hutch Games have shared the decision making process that saw its gang of five developers leave Sony to develop iOS titles independently.
"We had had a project cancellation," art director Whill Whitaker told Eurogamer.
"It was an inciting incident. It was just very exciting for us to realise we could do something on Unity. The App Store allowing you to self-publish is a very democratising situation. We were all motivated to take accountability for our own destiny. It was a very exciting thing to try out."
The team was keen to point out that the break from Sony's London studio was enitrely amicable, but explained that they were ready for a more accelerated form of development.
"It didn't happen at a fast enough pace for us," said technical director Sean Turner.
"We would get behind an idea and you didn't have the control to continue or thrust ideas forwards as much as we'd like. So possibly that lack of control was the impeding thing, not lack of creativity."
It was a sentiment that Whitaker backed.
"Console games, which cost upwards of 10 million bucks to make, these companies, like Sony and Microsoft, they can't take quite so many risks with them because there's so much money involved," he added.
"One of the things that attracted me was, let's just do something that's innovative and quick to make and we can just get on and do it and there's a lot less bureaucracy and money men behind it. It's liberating."
Hutch Games formed in June 2011, and just released its iOS racing title, Smash Cops. It is also working with Microsoft Soho Productions on Sesame Street Kinect, providing full time production consulting.

Campaign to allow communications via voice, video and GPS.
Smartphones and tablets continue to revolutionise industries, as payment, health, advertising and gaming among just some of the platforms that have been tampered with.
Now, ahead of comms specialists and armed forces gathering in London for the 2012 Tactical Communications conference, a US Army key speaker announced plans to rollout Android tablets and smartphones by March.
The devices will allow users to share live video, GPS coordinates and voice communications to collectively create an "accurate integrated picture of the battlefield."
Michael McCarthy, director of operations for the US Army's Brigade Modernisation Command, said: "It's not just to give them another shiny thing to hang on their equipment carriers."
Additionally, the army is also is continuing to work on producing its own app store to enable soldiers with access to foreign language translation and location-based services.

The world's starving must be full of sympathy.
New research from security specialist SecurEnvoy says nomophobia – the fear of being without their phone – afflicts 66 per cent of UK consumers.
It also revealed that 41 of people have two phones or more to mitigate against their dread.
Women worry about losing their phones more than men – 70 per cent versus 61 per cent, even though it's men that are more likely to have two phones – scoring 47 per cent and 36 per cent respectively.
Unsurprisingly the 18 to 24s are the most nomophobic at 77 per cent.
SecurEnvoy added that the condition is one the rise, as the first study into nomophobia, conducted four years ago, revealed that 53 per cent of people suffered from it.

156m iOS devices sold in 2011, compared to 122m Macs in 28 years.
We know Apple experienced a great fourth quarter last year, with its highest sales to date. Now, the firm's place in the market appears to be so strong that it's leaving its own products behind to eat dust.
In an interview with Fortune, Apple CEO Tim Cook unleashed a stack of stats to show the firm has sold 55 million iPads to date, along with 175 million iPhones and iPod Touch devices has pushed total iOS sales to 316 million in total.
Meanwhile, Macs which have been on the market for almost three decades have only sold 122 million devices in total. That means iOS devices have outpaced Mac sales in almost a tenth of the time.
Of course, this is a winning situation for Apple to be in, especially as Macs experienced the best ever sales in Q4 2011, selling almost five million units.
The iPad 3 is rumoured to be released next month, which is only likely to add even more millions to iOS sales.

Mac OS X will support Apple's gaming social network with the release of 10.8 Mountain Lion, a paid update that will be released in summer. Like Game Center on iOS, which was launched in 2010, its Mac incarnation will include support for achievements, scoreboards, online play, game invites and matchmaking, and add cross-platform play and in-game voice chat.
Mountain Lion follows the release of Lion in July 2011 and brings many iOS features closer to Apple's Mac OS. Accordingly, Game Center will allow interoperability between games for iOS and for Mac. Apple claims that Game Center boasts 100 million registered users, and that the App Store features over 20,000 Game Center-enabled games.
This means that it'll be possible for play between Macs and iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, presenting a challenge for game designers to marry mouse-based and touch-based play, but one that would reap massive reward. Apple demoed a racing game being played across iPhone to Mac which reportedly "works very well". Odds that Firemint's Real Racing series will be one of Mac Game Center's first exemplars seem, to us, high.
Mac developers will have access to a developer build of the new OS from today, allowing them to update games and apps to take advantage of its new features.

Sales of smartphones surged ahead in the final quarter of 2011, up 47 per cent according to a new report from market analysts Gartner.
149 million smartphones shipped in the last three months of 2011 with nearly half a billion for the full year. Apple managed to overtake LG to become the third largest maker of mobile phones worldwide and the top single manufacturer of smartphones with 19 per cent of the market.
Google's Android OS continued a bull run in popularity worldwide with just over half of all smartphones shipping with the open source mobile OS. Microsoft managed just 1.9 per cent, down from 3.4 per cent a year earlier.
"Western Europe and North America led most of the smartphone growth for Apple during the fourth quarter of 2011," said Gartner analyst Roberta Cozza.
"In Western Europe the spike in iPhone sales in the fourth quarter saved the overall smartphone market after two consecutive quarters of slow sales."
Chinese Android upstarts ZTE and Huawei were, after Apple, the fastest growing phone makers. Perhaps surprisingly, South Korean LG bucked the Android trend and slipped substantially, down to 4.9 per cent of the market from the heights of 7.1 per cent a year before.
LG's market share collapse was more dramatic than that of RIM and the Blackberry which only slipped from 3.1 to 2.9 per cent in a year.
Gartner noted that Nokia's launch of the Lumia 710 and 800 Windows Phone devices did not realise the sales that would have arrested Microsoft's fall in smartphone market share. Something they'll doubtless be trying to address in 2012.

Attempts to race Windows 8 to the finish line.
Thus far, Android's newest OS - Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) - has only been introduced on Samsung's Galaxy Nexus, providing it with one per cent installation across all Android devices.
Now, despite ICS only arriving in Q4 2011, Digitimes claims Google may launch Android 'Jelly Bean' (5.0) in Q2, in order to fend off competition from Microsoft tablets, which will receive Windows 8 in Q3.
The report claims Google plans to integrate Jelly Bean with its Chrome netbook OS to allow dual OS designs.
This will enable suppliers to create Android Jelly Bean-only devices, but additionally, Windows 8 tablets that can access the Android OS seamlessly.
Of course, the codename Jelly Bean is just speculation, Google has yet to officially announce what dessert its next OS will be named after.
