Smartphones and tablets continue to revolutionise industries, as payment, health, advertising and gaming among just some of the platforms that have been tampered with.
Now, ahead of comms specialists and armed forces gathering in London for the 2012 Tactical Communications conference, a US Army key speaker announced plans to rollout Android tablets and smartphones by March.
The devices will allow users to share live video, GPS coordinates and voice communications to collectively create an "accurate integrated picture of the battlefield."
Michael McCarthy, director of operations for the US Army's Brigade Modernisation Command, said: "It's not just to give them another shiny thing to hang on their equipment carriers."
Additionally, the army is also is continuing to work on producing its own app store to enable soldiers with access to foreign language translation and location-based services.
