But almost all developers with support both anyway.
In its second annual developer survey, Ovum has found that the two major platforms remain ahead, but that that coders are also embracing new OSs and web-based standards such as HTML5.
They're fast abandoning fading alternatives such as Windows Mobile, Symbian and WebOS too.
Yet, despite the increasing use of cross-platform programming approaches, most developers are still using vendor-specific distribution channels (such as Android Market) to deploy apps, as this is seen as the best way to reach the largest possible audience for their applications.
Adam Leach, devices & platforms practice leader at Ovum and author of the research, said: “A smartphone platform’s success is dictated not only by the pull of consumers and the push of handset vendors and mobile operators but also by a healthy economy of applications delivered by third-party developers.
"Therefore, it is important for all players in the smartphone ecosystem to understand the choices developers are making today and the downstream impact of those choices.

Combined best guess of 22 analysts.
Bloomberg spoke to a bunch of expert market weathers, who projected that Nokia sold 1.3 million units globally to operators and retailers by the end of last year.
The projections actually range from 800,000 to 2 million, but only one analyst predicted sales of fewer than one million handsets.
“The numbers look promising,” said Espen Furnes, an Oslo- based fund manager at Storebrand Asset Management.
“If Nokia is able to have a strong launch and surpass at least 1 million and keep that type of momentum, this would help put them in a credible position that is crucial to winning back investors.”
If true, it's good news for Microsoft and Nokia, which have declined to give sales figures but faced plenty of rumours suggesting the Lumia has proved disappointing.

Not long ago, Apple boasted that its products were made in America. Today, almost all of the 70 million iPhones, 30 million iPads and 59 million other products Apple sold last year are manufactured overseas. 'It isn't just that workers are cheaper abroad,' write Charles Duhig and Keith Bradsher. 'Rather, Apple's executives believe the vast scale of overseas factories as well as theflexibility, diligence and industrial skills of foreign workers have outpaced their American counterparts so much that "Made in the U.S.A." is no longer a viable option for most Apple products.' Apple executives say that going overseas, at this point, is their only option and recount the time Apple redesigned the iPhone's screen at the last minute, forcing an assembly line overhaul. A foreman immediately roused 8,000 workers inside the company's dormitories, and then each employee was given a biscuit and a cup of tea, guided to a workstation and within half an hour started a 12-hour shift fitting glass screens into beveled frames. Within 96 hours, the plant was producing over 10,000 iPhones a day. 'The speed and flexibility is breathtaking,' says one Apple executive. 'There's no American plant that can match that.' Apple's success has benefited the U.S. economy by empowering entrepreneurs and creating jobs at companies like cellular providers and businesses shipping Apple products. But ultimately, Apple executives say curing unemployment is not Apple's job. 'We don't have an obligation to solve America's problems. Our only obligation is making the best product possible

It's perhaps telling that $12 would seem like a high price to ask of an iOS game amidst the argument that cheap mobile games are diminishing the perceived value of gaming in general.
But Soul Calibur has released on the iOS App Store and it's $12 price tag does, sure enough, raise an eyebrow. It's a remake of the decade-old Dreamcast game - itself a fantastic title with awesome music and graphics which have been impressively reproduced for Apple's super-thin iDevices. But there are no buttons, so gameplay can only ever be second-rate, right?
So is it worth $12? The link is below if you think it is.

If you're still rockin' an ancient iPhone or iPod Touch and are fed up with friends teasing you at every chance with their new-style multitasking and reminder features, we've got some good news for you. A new software, dubbed Whited00r, will let you install portions of iOS 5 on the first two generations of the iPod Touch, iPhone 3G and even your O.G. iPhone. Whited00r accomplishes this by simply acting as a custom firmware -- * la CyanogenMod 9 on Android handsets. There are, however, a few traits that devs haven't been able to mimic, which include core services like the App Store (though, you can install apps via iTunes on your home machine), Notification Center and iCloud. So, for those of you clinging to your outdated hardware while you wait for the "next big thing," you can at least freshen up its features (at your own risk) with a coat of whitewash at the source below.

Been waiting with bated breath to liberate that dual-core A5 within your shiny, white (we presume) Jony Ive-designed device? Well, you can exhale now, as a "Dream Team" of iOS hackers have just released Absinthe A5: an untethered solution for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2. For the uninitiated, this particular hack will not only free your handset or tablet from Apple's controlling grasp, it'll also retain the jailbreakupon reboot. But don't just thank this hacker collective for the successful effort, you can direct some of that applause to yourselves, as over ten million users submitted crash reports which led to the discovery of the exploit. But enough of the backstory -- head on over to the source to get your download started.

Chinese smartphone maker ZTE has launched a low-cost Windows Phone dubbed the ZTE Tania which has been priced at around £249 bought outright.
The 4.3-inch ZTE Tania has respectable specifications with a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, half a gig of RAM and 4GB of storage and a decent resolution 480 x 800 screen for a mid-range phone.
Previously most Windows Phones have been high end devices but the ZTE Tania, running Windows Phone 7.5 'Mango', signals that Microsoft's also-ran mobile OS isn't just going after the top end of the market.
Mobile specialist retailer Clove is has the device available for pre-order for £249.99 with an expected arrival date of the 13th of February.
The locked-down Windows Phone OS isn't likely to appeal to techy Android fans but it might seem attractive for the others for which the iPhone's hefty price tag is a bit much to swallow.

Worth $3.65bn per year, according to Oracle.
Continued stats from analysts show that Android is the leading OS for the majority of smartphone users and Google confirms it.
In its earnings report, the search giant says that it has now has more than 250 million activations of Android devices, which means new devices that have been sold legitimately over the counter and not secondhand transactions.
Additionally the Android Market has received over 11 billion app downloads.
Larry Page, CEO of Google, said: "Google had a really strong quarter ending a great year. Full year revenue was up 29 per cent, and our quarterly revenue blew past the $10 billion mark for the first time, excited about the growth of Android, Gmail, and Google+, which now has 90 million users globally--well over double what I announced just three months ago."
While Page will be over the moon with the results, patent firm Oracle isn't quite as ecstatic. It's currently embroiled in a legal battle with Google about patent infringement and the claims that the 700,000 Android devices activated each day are providing Google with $3.65 billion in revenues each year.

SpuriousLogic writes in with a link to a story about some Canadian consumers who thought they were getting an iPad 2 but instead got the makings of the world's oldest tablets."As many as 10 fake iPad 2s, all made of slabs of modeling clay, were recently sold at electronic stores in Vancouver, British Columbia. Best Buy and Future Shop have launched investigations into how the scam was pulled off. The tablet computers, like most Apple products, are known for their sleek and simple designs. But there's no mistaking the iPad for one of the world's oldest 'tablet devices.' Still, most electronic products cannot be returned to stores. For the the stores and customers to be fooled by the clay replacements, the thieves must have successfully weighed out the clay portions and resealed the original Apple packaging. Future Shop spokesman Elliott Chun told CTV that individuals bought the iPads with cash, replaced them with the model clay, then returned the packages to the stores. The returned fakes were restocked on the shelve and sold to new, unwitting customers."

At the Guggenheim Museum in New York, Apple announced on Thursday it would update its iBooks platform to include textbook capabilities and also added a new platform called iBooks Author, which lets anyone easily create and publish their own e-books. Apple's senior VP of marketing, Phil Schiller, introduced iBooks 2, which has a new textbook experience for the iPad. The books themselves display larger images, and searching content is made significantly easier: all users need to do is tap on a word and they are taken straight to an appropriate glossary or index section in the back of the book. Navigating pages and searching is also easy and fluid, and at the end of each chapter is a full review with questions and pictures. If you want the answers to the questions, all you need to do is tap the question to get instant feedback. Apple also launched the iBooks Author app, which lets anyone easily create any kind of textbook and publish it to the iBookstore, and the new iTunes U platform, which helps teachers and students communicate better, and even send each other materials and notes created with iBooks Author. All of the apps are free, and available for any and all students, from K-12 to major universities.

Schoolboy Conner Haines inviting cancer patients to request ideas for future titles
An aspiring games developer aged eleven wants to raise money for charity by creating a range of iPhone and iPad apps for other children.
Pennsylvanian Conner Haines (pictured) has established a non-profit organisation, called Believe, that promises to direct all App Store revenues to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
One of his games in development, called Take Me Back, is an adventure title where the lead protagonist must travel home from outer space.
“The game should be finished in 2013,” he told regional newspaper Berks Mont News.
On his website, flipflopgames.com, Haines has established a contact page where 5-12 year old cancer patients can send him ideas for games to create.

Almost a 20 per cent rise of new iOS users in the US for Q4.
When the iPhone 4S was unveiled, it received a stream of negative comments and poor sales predictions from bloggers, analysts and fans alike. However, it has proven everybody wrong with sales figures in their millions and China rioting to receive a device.
Research firm Nielsen says the 4S has helped Apple close the gap on Android in the US since its October 14th release. New iOS smartphone users for October were at 25.1 per cent, November grew to 38.8 per cent and December grew further still to 44.5 per cent, according to the report.
However, this meant Android faced a decline each month with 61.6 per cent in October, which fell to 46.9 per cent in December.
Results show that 57 per cent of those that chose an iPhone in December selected the 4S. Android is still the dominant force overall though, with 46.3 per cent of all smartphone users in Q4, while iOS holds 30 per cent and RIM holds 14.9 per cent.
The report says 46 per cent of mobile owners had smartphones in Q4 and 60 per cent chose a smartphone instead of a feature phone during the same period.

Software update given the catchy name of version 1600.2483.8106.11500.
This time last month we reported Nokia's flagship Windows Phone had been riddled with battery problems, which caused the phone maker to be inundated with complaints.
The software issue limited the Lumia 800's ability to access its full battery capacity leaving users running low.
The Finnish firm promised a fix in early 2012 and it hasn't disappointed. Nokia Conversations says an update called version 1600.2483.8106.11500 is now in the process of being rolled out and should reach all users withing the next fortnight.
The software is expected to provide enhancements for battery performance and additionally wi-fi connectivity. Lumia users will automatically be alerted with a message once its is available.

Nielsen crunched Q4 numbers today, and the results will likely have Apple analysts jumping up and down. The findings, focused on those who've purchased a smartphone within the previous three months, indicate a huge spike -- from 25 percent in October to 45 percent in December -- in iPhone purchases since October as an obvious result of the launch of the 4S. Conversely, the number of recent Android buyers fell by 14 percent in the same period. Of course, these numbers are directly affected by Apple's latest product launch and by no means should be any indicator that Apple is poised to win the battle against its bitter rival, as iOS continues to trail Android by over 16 percent in market share. Looking at the war for the third spot, RIM's US market share declined by 2.9 percent from Q3 to Q4, falling to 14.9 percent -- not a surprise, since it only captured the hearts of six percent of recent buyers this quarter -- and Windows Phone slightly increased from 1.2 to 1.3 percent. Full press release and chart can be found after the break.

The fine folks over at Amazon have further flushed out the firmware on its fiercely popular Fire tablet. Upgrading your Kindle Fire to version 6.2.2 will bring a handful of small performance tweaks, bugs fixes and, most notably, add a full-screen mode to the device's Silk browser. If you've gone ahead and rooted your Fire, applying the firmware bump will kill superuser access -- although a fresh build of BurritoRoot 2 should get you back on the straight and narrow. The new code is being pushed out over-the-air as we type, while those that enjoy the endorphin rush associated with instant gratification -- and know how to manually update a Kindle -- can find a link to the 6.2.2 firmware file below. Happy updating!
