Atari is bringing a new version of Breakout to iOS devices. Titled Breakout Boost, it adds plenty of modern features to the classic brick-breaker, including power-ups, special bricks and – the most modern feature of all – in-app purchases.
Yes, in addition to grenade balls, exploding bricks and the like, Breakout Boostwill contain five (five) free levels and "over 200 more unique brick layouts available via in-app purchase." Specific prices and levels aren't mentioned, but here's hoping Atari opts for the popular "here's a ton of stuff for 99 cents" model.

Mobile telecom trade group CTIA and the Entertainment Software Rating Board will roll out a rating system for mobile applications similar to ratings on other electronic games, the groups announced Tuesday. Six mobile application storefronts will support the rating system and will roll out the ratings in the coming months, CTIA said. AT&T, Microsoft, Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile USA, U.S. Cellular and Verizon Wireless are the founding members of the rating system."An opinion piece at Gamasutra points out that this initiative falls a bit flat without Apple or Google on board, since iOS and Android are so vital to the current mobile gaming industry. "In the long run, the ESRB/CTIA announcement could be another sign of shifting power in the gaming industry. Normally, the ESRB gets what it wants. But it has no leverage against Apple and Google.

Remember OpenMoko's first free and open source phones, the GTA-01 and GTA-02 (also called FreeRunner)? There is a new project called Phoenux. The German company Golden Delicous is building a new main board (called GTA-04) for the GTA01/02 case. The new hardware features a DM3730 (800 MHz) processor, a GTM601W UMTS (HSPA) module, and lots more."Would you pay extra for a phone that comes with a Debian build?

Nokia has denied claims its phones are loaded with controversial keystroke logging software, which allegedly has the ability to spy on users activities.
It follows claims that software from app maker Carrier IQ has been secretly logging location, keystrokes, and messages on smartphones from a number of vendors.
"Nokia is aware of inaccurate reports which state that software from Carrier IQ has been found on Nokia devices. Carrier IQ does not ship products for any Nokia devices, so these reports are wrong," Nokia spokesman James Etheridge told Dow Jones Newswires.
The story broke when handset security researcher Trevor Eckhart posted a video online, claiming to expose the snooping practices of Carrier IQ.
For its part, the company denies it is involved in such nefarious affairs at all, saying in statement: "Our software is designed to help mobile network providers diagnose critical issues that lead to problems such as dropped calls and battery drain."

Video calling services such as Skype and FaceTime are driving the growth of the still young mobile platform. Skype recently revamped its mobile services with new technology to boost its 60 million iOS users.
With results like this, US-based analyst NPD In-Stat believes active video calling users will pass 380 million in 2015.
That's a growth of approximately 320 million in five years when compared to the 63 million users in 2010.
Amy Cravens, senior analyst, said: "While the mobile arena is relatively nascent, it has fuelled much of the growth in usage over the course of 2011. The entry of players with significant market presence has been critical in pushing mass adoption in mobile video calling.
"Currently, the living room market is still quite small; however, In-Stat expects to see significant developments in this market in the coming years."

Token_Internet_Girl writes with a followup to last week's news about Android developer Trevor Eckhart, who was researching software from CarrierIQ, installed on millions of cellphones, that secretly logged a variety of user information — from button presses to text message contents to browsing data. CarrierIQ tried to silence Eckhart, but later backtracked. Now, Eckhart has posted a video demonstration of CarrierIQ's logging software. From the article:"The company denies its software logs keystrokes. Eckhart’s 17-minute video clearly undercuts that claim. ... The video shows the software logging Eckhart's online search of 'hello world.' That's despite Eckhart using the HTTPS version of Google, which is supposed to hide searches from those who would want to spy by intercepting the traffic between a user and Google. ...the video shows the software logging each number as Eckhart fingers the dialer. 'Every button you press in the dialer before you call,' he says on the video, 'it already gets sent off to the IQ application.'"

Extreme discounts on the App Store by large publishers are prompting smaller companies to move to freemium models rather than compete with cheap paid apps and their huge marketing budgets.
Last Christmas Electronic Arts dropped prices for a majority of its branded games on iOS platforms, flooding the top slots in the charts and saturated marketing channels on the App Store.
The practice was criticised by rival publisher Gameloft, but companies like Canadian publisher Fuse Powered saw it as an opportunity to change its entire approach to the mobile games business.
"That's one of the things that motivated us to transition our business model," said CEO Jon Walsh in an interview published today. "That idea that a big publisher can drop prices, take a hit and fill up all those top slots."
"That said two things: paid games are always going to have that risk. The big publisher is basically selling at an extremely low cost to gain market share and if it works for them they are going to continue to do it. So we can either complain about it or make sure our business model works around it. That's where the freemium model works for us."
For Fuse Powered, which has so far published titles such as Dawn of the Dead and Jaws Revenge, the company hopes to build a dedicated network of players by releasing multiple titles on a regular basis. It can then cross-promote its games within its own network. With six titles planned for the next three months, the company hopes to have 24 games out by the end of 2012.
"It also said to us that we need to go towards a publishing model where we have a base of really avid players that are enjoying our games so that when we bring out more stuff we don't need to get into those top 25 positions in the App Store, we can deliver directly to the existing player base," offered Walsh.
"That will be a continued risk for people selling 99 cent games."

Presumably launched to snatch users from rivals.
Microsoft's partnership with Nokia has seen the birth of a new line in Windows Phones, which both companies hope will succeed in the crowded smartphone market.
In a bid to attract new customers, Microsoft has developed a mobile browser-based emulator for the WinPho OS, which is available for use on Apple and Android devices.
The aim behind the new platform – with its tiles, big typeface and horizontal scrolling – is to showcase the OS to smartphone users demonstrating its capabilities.
It's likely the secondary aim is to reel in customers from rival operating systems to strengthen its ranks in the battle for domination.
Microsoft will have the most difficulty persuading Apple lovers to climb aboard of course as we recently reported that iPhone owners are the most loyal.

Providing it can elude the somewhat over-active reach of Bethesda’s lawyers, a Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim app is heading to iOS.
Called Dragon Shout, the download contains a fully interactive Skyrim map that allows gamers to set their own markers, complete with annotations. This can be used for marking down the location of key artefacts such as dragon bones or loot if your inventory is currently full.
Crucially this functionality isn’t offered in the full Skyrim game.
Later updates to the app will also add some social networking features, TouchArcade reports.
The app is currently undergoing Apple’s submissions process and could be out within a matter of days.

Oh no, it isn't just about the 5-inch tabletphone today. Announced at the same event in Beijing just now are a couple of larger tablets from Lenovo: the LePad S2007 and the LePad S2010. Interestingly, the latter 10.1-inch device isn't quite the same as what we saw in our exclusive scoop from two weeks ago: it's 1.5GHz Qualcomm dual-core rather than 1.6GHz NVIDIA quad-core, 1GB RAM instead of 2GB, no funky fingerprint scanner on the back, and it's launching with Android 3.2 instead of Ice Cream Sandwich. But fret not, as we've been informed that its international counterpart -- aka the IdeaTab K2 in our scoop -- will launch with the latest Android OS; so we're just waiting for a release date.
Both of these Honeycomb tablets share many similarities: Qualcomm's dual-core 1.5GHz chip, 1GB RAM, 1,280 x 800 IPS display (pretty nice on a 7-inch form factor, with 216ppi density), eight megapixel main camera, 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera, dual-mode 3G (China Telecom's EV-DO plus China Unicom's WCDMA) for data plus voice calls, and plans to upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich in the future. Aside from the obvious physical differences, these tablets also come with different battery capacities: the 360g-heavy, 9.7mm-thick S2007 comes with 3,780mAh that can last up to eight hours on WiFi; whereas the 670g-heavy (almost the same as the original WiFi iPad, uh-oh), 9.9mm-thick S2010 has a generous 7,560mAh that can push it to 11 hours. Like the S2005 tabletphone, both tablets will be available in China next month; so for now, stay tuned for some hands-on photos from our folks over at Engadget Chinese.
Update: It turns out that there was a slight misunderstanding regarding the voice call feature -- the Chinese press release meant using Skype-like software to enable this. Pah.

Anyone else feel like that pig-slaying pack of temperamental birdies has finally jumped the shark? Yeah, us too. Which makes World of Goo's official bow on Android especially timely. Gaming addicts have long had the option to build with blobs of these living globs on Mac, PC, Wii, and iOS, but now the architecturally-focused fun is ready to make nice with Google's legion of mobile mitts. You can snag the puzzler on the Android market now, so long as your handset's sporting FroYo and up. Unfortunately, this good time pastime doesn't come gratis, so you'll have to fork over three dolla dolla bills, y'all. Of course, you can always get your digits dirty (and prime that budding addiction) with a demo and live in the über-frugal land of forever level one.

Google's already put its stamp on the great outdoors, what with its Street View fleet chronicling the well-trodden ways of our world for Maps. Which is precisely why Mountain View's turning its attention inward for that next, great navigation innovation, as it attempts to chart a course through the wilds ofindoor spaces. Hitting the Android Market in the U.S. and Japan today, the company's ever-popular app gets a full version bump to 6.0, bringing with it the inclusion of retail and airport floor plans.
The newly added indoor maps don't quite offer the turn-by-turn navigation you've come to know and depend upon (that's outside-only for now), but the provided layouts should help usher you along to the nearest bathroom, clothing shop or elevator. There's no fancy equipment at use, either. All of your positioning information is culled from the same set of data (including GPS) used for "My Location,"although here it's been optimized to detect movement along the z-axis. What does that mean for you, dear end user? Try a nifty feature called "Automatic Floor Detection" that'll keep track of your progress as you move about from escalator to escalator. Google's also endeavoring to extend its indoor reach, opening up its mapping inventory with a self-service tool (currently in beta) that'll allow business owners to upload floor plans directly to Maps.
If you're itching to test the tech out, you'll want to find yourself at one of the dozen-plus airport partners scattered across the country, in addition to transit hubs and major retail outlets both stateside and in Japan. Familiar commercial forces like Macy's and Takashimaya have opted-in to the indoor location service, but your best bet's going to be IKEA -- which has agreed to roll the feature out to all of its stores nationwide. So, whether you're rocking Android 2.1 or the forward-facing 4.0, prepare to let your Googlefied smartphone almost always be your guide. Follow past the break for additional shots and a video demo of the indoor geo-location in action.

Still tempted by the fruit of another? If you're looking Microsoft's way, but aren't quite ready to toss your adoration for iOS or Android aside, the coders in Redmond are giving you an alternative to quitting cold turkey. By visiting http://aka.ms/wpdemo on one's iOS or Android browser, you'll be immediately tunneled into a emulation of Windows Phone 7. We gave it a test run here at Engadget HQ, and it seems that every tile and swipe save for Apps runs properly. Can't say the fonts and such looked as smooth on our Galaxy S II as they do on the Radar, but it's a solid effort that'll definitely serve you well if you're considering the switch. Just don't try to flip the demo horizontally -- that's clearly a no-no.

Sure, it's leaps and bounds away from all the parlor tricks that Siri is able to perform, but now, jailbroken iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch devices -- that have been upgraded to iOS 5 -- may access the dictation portion of Siri's prowess. Thanks to Siri0us, the free app available through Cydia, users will gain the option to speak messages and search queries rather than type them, which could be a huge time saver -- unless there's a series of mistakes, anyway. Rather than accessing Apple's own system, the app works by tapping into Nuance's Dragon Go servers for speech recognition. Rather subversive, don't you think? If you'd like to get in on the fun (before Nuance breaks up the party), just check the video following the break.
Update: Well, who didn't see this one coming? Nuance has pulled the rug out from under Siri0us, and the app has been yanked from Cydia while the developer searches for another speech recognition server. Happy hunting, dude.

It wasn't long ago that Samsung modified its Galaxy Tab 10.1 to get it back on the German market, and it didn't take long for Apple to respond. Apparently, Cupertino didn't take kindly to Sammy's sneaky workaround, and has filed for an injunction to stop the 10.1N from showing up on store shelves in Germany. The slate's fate will be determined on December 22nd, so we'll have to wait and see whether itjoins its siblings on the sidelines, or is around to deliver some Honeycomb delights to those in Deutschland come Christmas morn.

Finnish experts develop device that sits between the phone and the network.
This network proxy works as a passageway for smartphones to connect to the internet and handle most of the data transfer.
This, will in turn save up to 74 per cent of battery power consumption, according to Physorg.
Developing countries have been slow in adopting mobile internet due to the large energy requirements but the researchers behind the device look to change this.
Professor Jukka Manner from Aalto University, said: "This new solution is particularly valuable in developing countries because it provides significantly more effective Internet access to a much larger number of people.
"At the moment, only a small percent can access the Internet from a wired connection, but 90 per cent of the African population lives in areas with mobile phone network coverage. Mobile phone usage is increasing rapidly, however the use of mobile Internet services is hindered by users not having access to the power grid to recharge their phones."
