Research firm Nielsen says Apple's iPhone and Google's Android OS account for 71 per cent of smartphones in the US.
The stronghold has led to the two platforms driving 83 per cent of all app downloads in the last 30 days, according to the report.
Results show that 44 per cent of US subscribers own smartphones. The devices also represented 56 per cent of all mobile phone purchases during the last quarter.
The report says Android continues to dominate the US smartphone market with 42.8 per cent with HTC devices leading the way for Q3 with 15 per cent, while Samsung and Motorola snag 10.4 per cent each.
