Dost a company actually dare turn down the seductive wiles of the iPhone? As a matter of fact, there is at least one US carrier that has the audacity to say no to Tim Cook's face: US Cellular. During her company's quarterly earnings call, CEO Mary Dillon mentioned that the mobile provider was given the opportunity to sell the iPhone, but Apple's "terms were unacceptable" when considering the risk and profitability involved. It's bad news for anyone on US Cellular that was remotely interested in grabbing one; the good news, however, is that the fact the opportunity was even available -- paired with C-Spire's intentions of selling the devices next week -- will at least give hope to customers of the little guys. Cricket? Cincinnati Bell? Who's up next?

Apple will launch iPad 3 and iPhone 5 in 2012, as well as overhaul its iMac and MacBook Air lines, according to a DigiTimes report.
The publication, which covers the semiconductor, electronics and computer industries in Taiwan and China, claims to have been informed by "sources in the upstream supply chain" that Apple will finalise order volumes for key components for the next-gen iPad in December.
The company is said to be planning to order enough components to produce two million iPad 3 units by the end of 2011. It has reportedly instructed manufacturers to develop flat panel modules and LED light bars for two prototypes models, codenamed J1 and J2.
DigiTimes added that the iPhone 5 and next-generation iMac are unlikely to be revealed until the second half of next year.

Frozen Synapse, the game of intense, turn-based tactical planning and sudden simultaneous execution, is coming to the iPad. Posting on developer Mode 7's blog, managing director Paul Taylor reveals that the tablet version has been "in the works for a while," having already appeared in playable form at a pub meetup. Taylor says we can expect it sometime within the first half of next year, if all goes to plan.
Also part of the plan: cross-platform play between the iPad and other versions of Frozen Synapse. Taylor adds that the focus on the capable iPad port won't detract from existing platforms -- "we're actually working right now to hire another team member so we can give it more attention and update it more efficiently."
At the moment, Mode 7 consists of three core developers and a "group of trusted freelancers." Frozen Synapse has gained a lot of indie buzz in recent months, especially after becoming the star attraction in a recent Humble Indie Bundle.

Gary Morgenthaler, a recognized expert in artificial intelligence and a Siri board member, says that Apple now has at least a two-year advantage over Google in the war for best smartphone platform. 'What Siri has done is changed people's expectations about what's possible,' says Morgenthaler. 'Apple has crossed a threshold; people now expect that you should be able to expect to speak ordinary English — and be understood. Siri has cracked the code.' The threshold, from mere speech recognition to natural language input and understanding, is one that Google cannot cross by replicating the technology or making an acquisition adds Morgenthaler. 'There's no company out there they can go buy.' Morgenthaler's comments echo the recent article in Forbes Magazine, 'Why Siri Is a Google Killer' that says that Apple's biggest advantage over any other voice application out there today is the massive data Siri will collect in the next 2 years — all being stored in Apple's massive North Carolina data center — that will allow Siri to get better and better. 'Siri is a new interface for customers wanting to get information,' writes Eric Jackson. 'At the moment, most of us still rely on Google for getting at the info we want. But Siri has a foot in the door and it's trusting that it will win your confidence over time to do basic info gathering.'"

Detest checking your email constantly for the latest offer from Google? If you've got an Android 2.1+ device, the Goog itself just outed an alternative. The Google Offers app just went live in the Android Market, bringing deals near your current (select) location into an easy-to-digest piece of mobile software. No, NFC's not required, and yes, you can redeem it straight from the phone -- so long as the store you're visiting has someone with intellect and eyes. Hit the source link (or the Market on your handset) to get your download on, and feel free to chuckle as you realize that it'll remain up way longer than Gmail did for iOS.

If you're the lucky owner of a rare 2011 TouchPad, the onus is on you to keep it clean, polished and updated. Sure, you've already got a decent Twitter client in the form Spaz HD, and you're getting extra snappy performance from webOS 3.0.4, but web chatter indicates that something even better could be on the horizon. Developers have started tweeting via 'webOS Synergy', possibly hinting that integrated Twitter could be on the way in 3.0.5. What's more, another TouchPad owner running that newfangled version has submitted an impressive score to Lithium BenchMark, suggesting it might deliver a performance bump too. The duck may be dead, but the dream lives on.

GameStop will begin selling a range of game-focused Android tablet devices online and in selected US stores on November 4.
The tablets sold in-store are the Acer Iconia 7-inch (8GB/$329.99), the Asus Eee Pad Transformer 10.1-inch (16GB/$399), and the Samsung Galaxy 10.1-inch (16GB/$499).
Each comes pre-loaded with six free games: Dead Space, Re-Load, Sonic CD, Monster Madness, Riptide and Cordy. The tablets will also come with the digital version of Game Informer magazine and the Kongregate Arcade app.
The devices will go on sale on Friday at 200 GameStop stores, before being rolled out across company's entire network.
A Bluetooth wireless controller, designed by GameStop's internal R&D department to work with the three tablets, is available for an additional $39.
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz in September, GameStop president Tony Bartel said the pad was intended to encourage the development of more immersive games for tablets.
"There's not a lot of tablet/Android based games for the consumer that are designed to use an external controller," he said. "Our thought is that the tablet is a great immersive gaming device so it's hard for us to envision how that tablet will really function as such without some sort of controller."
"So we've created a controller that we're testing to really allow for immersive gameplay. It's hard to imagine how to stream a game - let' say Modern Warfare 3 - onto a tablet and then play it with your finger."
GameStop is also developing a cloud-based streaming service that will work in conjunction with the tablet devices.

Why are there so many free games listed in the top 10 grossing games over in Apple's App Store? Because some feature exorbitant in-app purchase fees for virtual items. Quoting ZDNet: 'Developing "free" games aimed specifically at children, and then bundling ridiculously priced in-app purchases inside those "free" games feels scammy to me. Sure, it's not illegal, and it's not against Apple's developer terms and conditions, but Apple is a company that prides itself in protecting users from harm. Most of the game developers do make an attempt to warn users that the game "changes real money for additional in-app content" but it's a lame attempt. It's easily missed, and kids aren't going to read it anyway.

Alcatel One Touch, best known for Android phones that'll give your bank balance a mere glancing blow, is purportedly going big. New Mobile managed to get its hands on the One Touch 995, which will apparently be decked out with a 1.4GHz processor and a gratifying 4.3-inch touchscreen to show off the latest version of Gingerbread. Alcatel has managed to cocoon all this, alongside a five megapixel shooter, into a shell apparently "less than a centimeter thick." What really caught our attention, however, is the apparent promise from the company that Ice Cream Sandwich will be making an appearance on the handset. We're still waiting for the official word from Alcatel, but the phone is expected to be unveiled at Mobile World Congress 2012, with a very tempting €200 ($276) price tag -- a nice price for a large screen Android handset. See more of the One Touch 995 hardware at the source link below.

Anecdotal reports have been pouring in since iOS 5 landed that battery life had suddenly dropped off on some people's iPhones. A full 15-percent of you who responded to our poll reported suffering from the issue. Now Apple has officially confirmed that several bugs are negatively affecting battery life. In a statement given to All Things D the Cupertino company acknowledged the problem and said it would "release a software update to address those [bugs] in a few weeks." In recent days the complaints in both the Apple forums and our own tips box have reached a deafening volume but, sadly, Apple isn't offering any temporary work arounds or advice for those constantly attached to a charger. So there you go folks -- Apple is working on it. You're the patient type, right?
Update: Well, iOS 5.0.1 Beta, which includes the aforementioned bug fixes, just landed for devs. So Apple isn't just working on it, they've fixed it... theoretically. Lets hope this test run is a bit shorter than expected.

In case you weren't aware, Apple's sold a whole lot of iPad 2s, so aside from the couple of bezel color choices or adding a Smart Cover, there's not much you can do to make your tablet stand out from the crowd. Well, now there's another option for the well-heeled gadget lover. Stuart Hughes is back with another custom gadget for the economic elites called the iPad 2 Gold History Edition. It's got a solid gold backside, an Apple logo and home button crafted from a total of 65 flawless diamonds, plus a bezel crafted from Ammolite rock and slivers of thigh bone from a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Between all that ice and prehistoric bling, there won't be a problem picking this iPad out of a lineup. What is a problem (for most of us, anyway) is the price: eight million dollars. We dig the dino look and all, but that's an awfully hefty entrance fee -- we'd rather buy a stock slate and take a few dozen trips to the final frontier instead.

As promised, our favorite cigar smoking, wise cracking first-person protagonist has hit the Android Market, and it didn't even take 15 years. The mobile version of the classic FPS is available now for Android 1.6 and up (that's according to the Market listing -- its producers recommend 2.1 and up), courtesy of Tapjoy and Machineworks Northwest as a $0.99 download. And don't worry, there's plenty of Duke to go around.

Lookie here -- an iPad app just got miniaturized. It's not too often we see the progress work in reverse, but one of Apple's flagship iPad programs has just been converted for use on the iPhone and iPod touch. It doesn't seem as if too much is changing -- outside of the shrunken display options, of course. You can still plug your electric guitar into either of Apple's more bantam iOS devices in order to record through classic amps and stompbox effects, or record your voice or any acoustic sound using the built-in microphone. The app enables users to record and mix up to eight tracks and then share the finished product with friends or send it to your Mac to keep working on it in GarageBand (the "real one") or Logic Pro. It'll run new users $4.99, but if you already purchased the iPad build, it's a free update to get the new ports. Oh, and if you're curious, the app now runs on iPad, iPad 2, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and iPod touch (third and fourth generation). Tap the iTunes link below to snag your own copy.
