Sure, plenty of folks are still waiting for their shipments to arrive, but Apple's latest magical handset is already baring its innards, courtesy of the screwdriver-wielding mad scientists at iFixit. The teardown is still carrying the "In Progress" badge at the moment, but among the findings thus far is the discovery of a slightly larger battery. Can the stash of magic dust be too far behind?
Update: The good folks over at iFixit have finished mucking about the iPhone 4S's innards and have confirmed the handset's packing 512MB of DDR2 RAM, an updated Qualcomm MDM6610 chip and 16GB of NAND flash memory courtesy of Toshiba. Yeah, that makes just as much sense to us as it does to you. Following yesterday's PR debacle, the final word from Sprint appears to be as follows:"Sprint's policy is to have the iPhone 4S SIM locked to our network domestically and internationally. At launch, the International SIM will be unlocked. We do expect a SIM lock to be pushed to the devices shortly after launch. We will then allow existing customers in good standing to unlock the SIM for international use if needed in the future."
So, if we're reading that correctly, the iPhone you purchase and activate will be unlocked. Then, a SIM lock will be "pushed" to your device. But, if you've been a good, policy-abiding customer, your iPhone can then be unlocked manually by Sprint. Who knows what'll happen if you buy your phone and flee to a non-extradition country before Sprint comes knocking at the door, shackles in hand. Will you be left to live in peace with your newly-acquired international Micro SIM? Will you need to plead your case before a tribunal of mobile carrier overlords? Only time will tell, we suppose, or perhaps further clarification from Sprint. Jump past the break for the complete announcement.

There's still no further word on Samsung's recent attempt to block sales of the iPhone 4S in France and Italy, but the company's now been dealt a blow in its similar efforts in the Netherlands. According toReuters, a Dutch court has turned down Samsung's request for a ban on certain Apple products, and rejected claims that they infringe on Samsung's patents (it's also rejected Apple's counterclaims in the case). The particular patents in question here are not related to software or the design of the devices, as in other cases, but rather their 3G capabilities, which Samsung had claimed Apple was infringing on with the various iterations of the iPhone and iPad.

New research from comScore – 'Digital Omnivores: How Tablets, Smartphones and Connected Devices are Changing U.S. Digital Media Consumption Habits' – merely consolidates what we all knew: in the US, the tablet market is the iPad market.
It also found iPads have also begun to account for a higher share of internet traffic than iPhones (46.8 per cent vs. 42.6 per cent of all iOS device traffic).
This explosion is helping to make mobile creep up as a proportion of overall data traffic.
In fact, 6.8 per cent of US data traffic comes from smartphones and tablets.

Pre-orders for the iPhone 4S only began shipping this week, but a handful of early owners have already taken Apple's first A5-based smartphone for a test run, and they've got the benchmarks to prove it. The results, obtained by AnandTech, are hardly what we'd call shocking. In terms of Javascript performance (pictured above), the 4S measures up rather nicely against the Tegra 2-based Honeycomb competition, while out-dueling the iPhone 4 in overall CPU muscle. Geekbench results, meanwhile, clock the 4S at around 800MHz, with a score of 623. That's about 25 percent lower than the A5-based iPad 2, but notably higher than the iPhone 4 (see graphic, after the break). When it comes to GPU performance, GLBenchmark 2.1 tests in 1280 x 720, off-screen render mode place Apple's new handset well above the Galaxy S II, with scores of 122.7 and 67.1, respectively. It still trails the iPad 2, not surprisingly, but the 4S' scores show a major advantage over the iPhone 4, which registered a score of 15.3. If you've been dreaming of a world where Android apps are free to roam across your Windows desktop, you're in luck, because BlueStacks has just turned your reverie into reality. Today, the startup unveiled an alpha version of its App Player -- software that allows users to run a host of Android apps on Windows PCs, tablets or desktops, without requiring them to make modifications to their original OS. Available as a free download, this early test version comes pre-loaded with ten apps, and can support an extra 26, on top of that. BlueStacks' free Cloud Connect app, meanwhile, allows you to port third-party apps directly from your handset to your computer, though some games, including Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja, are prohibited. Those, it turns out, will be included under a paid version of the App Player, which BlueStacks hopes to launch at a later date. Korea's finest have been very coy on the dual-core and Honeycomb update to the Galaxy Tab 7, the 7 Plus. We knew that Austria and Indonesia would get it by the end of October but didn't know when it was likely to land in the States, or how much it would cost when it got here. Fortunately, it has now been spotted at J&R.com, where you will be happy to know that the 16GB version will cost $400, while the 32GB costs a bit more at $500. Now they just need to tell us when the thing will actually arrive.

If you’re looking to build a really big Android tablet the trick is not to start from scratch. [Peter] pulled off a 23″ Android Tablet hack using a collection of easily acquired parts, leaving the hard work up to hardware that was designed to do it.
He didn’t really build a tablet, as much as he built a big touch-screen add-on for one. He already had a couple of inexpensive tablets on hand to play around with. One of them has an HDMI out port, which let him easily push the display onto a 23″ monitor. He knew the tablet was a 4-wire resistive touchscreen, but he didn’t know if other touchscreens with the same number of connectors and be directly swapped and still work. To test this, he cracked open a second tablet device and connected its touchscreen to the first one’s hardware. When he was met with success it was time to source a couple of 23″ touchscreen overlays to test with the external monitor. As you can see in the clip after the break, it works like a charm!

Apple’s Covent Garden store was the victim of a smash and grab raid this morning after at least seven moped riders broke the front window and made off with goods.
Two men have since been arrested by the Metropolitan Police.
“Detectives are appealing for witnesses and information after a smash-and-grab in central London,” a MET statement explained.
“Police were alerted at approx. 01.00hrs this morning (Monday 10 October) to a window broken and property taken from the Apple Store in Covent Garden. It is believed there were around 7 moped riders / motorcyclists involved, most if not all with a pillion passenger. All persons were in full face crash helmets.
“Shortly afterwards Islington police saw a moped and followed and attempted to stop it, but it was lost. A moped was subsequently found abandoned in the vicinity of Wyclif Court, St John Street EC1 – officers saw two men inside the block of flats, and they were pursued on foot and apprehended within the block at approx 01.20hrs.
“Some property, believed stolen from the store, was found in bags in their possession. The men [A - 16 ys; B - 21 ys] are now in custody at a north London police station.”
The same store was raided just a few weeks ago after a vehicle ploughed into the front window.

The Guardian has published an guide to UK iPhone 4S mobile tariffs, concluding that some two-year contract deals are cheaper than buying the new iPhone outright on a SIM-only contract.
"The entire phone contract field is a thicket," wrote Guardian journalist Charles Arthur. The conclusion that two-year contracts are better than SIM-only deals was also made with the cheapest SIM-only provider, GiffGaff.
"From our calculations, the best deals generally come from Three. The most expensive ones - generally (but not always) - are with Vodafone," said the Guardian.

It may be a minimal upgrade compared to some of the more creative predictions that were published, but the iPhone 4S has definitely struck a chord with consumers.
Apple has revealed that over one million pre-orders were placed for the device in just one day, beating the record laid down by the iPhone 4 by 400,000 universals.
"We are blown away with the incredible customer response to iPhone 4S," Apple’s senior VP of worldwide product marketing Philip Schiller stated.
"The first day pre-orders for iPhone 4S have been the most for any new product that Apple has ever launched and we are thrilled that customers love iPhone 4S as much as we do."
Those who buy the iPhone 4S from an official Apple store on its launch day of Friday October 14th will also be offered a free Personal Setup Service that will help customers set up their email and familiarise themselves with the new apps.
Features of the new handset include Apple’s dual-core A5 chip, 1080p video recording, iCloud and new voice command system Siri.

Kind of like eating a peanut butter sandwich with no jelly, the most obvious app missing from the iPadhas been Facebook -- until today. The New York Times reports that the site has finally confirmed the app's availability just in time for eager social networkers to like, subscribe and stalk from their slates. According to software engineer Leon Dubinsky, the app will highlight the multitouch awesomeness of the iPad, something that's unavailable from the website alone even from a touchscreen device. The folks at FB also added that some of the newly released features will be integrated into the iPhone app as well, making it a win / win for iOS fanatics. Consider it liked.

The most surprising thing about the iPhone 4S is that people were surprised by the iPhone 4S, for there is ample precedent to the company both confining upgrades largely to a speed bump and to saying no to a host of potential new features. As to the former, the iPhone 4S is straight out of the playbook of Apple's successful upgrade of the Apple 3G to the 3GS, although the competition wasn't as strong as it is today.
Similarly, when Apple first lowered the price of the iPod touch below $200 in 2009 amidst widespread speculation that it would add a front-facing camera for FaceTime (which it did in the next generation), the company noted that it didn't think the product needed any more "stuff." So, what, then, defines the iPhone 4S? The differentiators can be thought of as four "Ses."

Also, it adds a soft button on the lock screen, to go straight to the camera app."

Trials for mobile broadband 4G have started in Cornwall, with around 200 people taking part.
4G, or Long Term Evolution standard broadband, is available to those taking part as both home and mobile broadband, with BT and Everything Everywhere running the tests.
"BT is committed to working with the government and using technology innovation to find ways of addressing the remaining challenges within the UK where there are still broadband 'not-spots'," said Neil Stagg, BT Wholesale CEO.
Many of those chosen to take part in the trial previously struggled to get a broadband connection.
Ofcom recently announced its intention to delay its 4G spectrum auction until late next year.

Well, here it is. After months of beta tests, Motorola's ET1 tablet was finally unveiled today, bringing a taste of Android 2.3 to the enterprise market. Powered by a 1GHz dual-core CPU, this rugged slate packs 8GB of internal storage, along with a 32GB microSD card slot, and features a seven-inch, Gorilla Glass capacitive touchscreen with 1024 x 600 resolution. Weighing in at 1.4 pounds, the ET1 also boasts an eight megapixel rear camera, a front-facing shooter designed for videoconferencing and 720p video capabilities. Plus, retailers can choose to outfit the tablet with a host of accessories, including a barcode reader, magnetic stripe reader, handstrap and holster. At this point, the ET1 boasts only WiFi connectivity, though Motorola Solutions' Sheldon Safir says a Wide Area Network version is in the works. The manufacturer didn't offer a specific price, but Safir tells Computer World that bulk purchases should cost less than $1,000 by the time the slab hits the market, later this year.
