The wonders of iPlayer are no longer the reserve of the Brits. As of today, iPad users in 11 other countries across Europe can subscribe to the service for €7 per month or €50 per year. That equates to $10 -- just about living up to the Beeb's promised maximum price. The subscription grants access to a wealth of TV classics, like Fawlty Towers and Only Fools & Horses, as well as unwitting comedies like EastEnders. Some sort of motoring series by the name of Top Gear is also available, for those who like cars and middle-aged men in pointy shoes. The app will allow for downloading as well as streaming, and marks a "pilot phase" for the service, which should hopefully reach the former colonial outpost of America before too long.

It's not enough anymore to simply cram a single-octave keyboard into the bottom of a Nintendo DS, effective piano instruction requires at least twice as many keys -- and an iPad. The Ion Piano Apprentice (when coupled with a compatible iDevice and companion app) offers aspiring Tchaikovskys octave-selectable free play, lessons on reading sheet music, and even a view of award-winning piano instructor Scott Houston's handsome hands. If those mitts are too distracting for you, just follow along with the light-up keys, you'll be fine. This mini keyboard / iPad dock will land this fall to the tune of $100 -- -- it's either that, a real instructor, or a pair of haptic robot gloves. Your choice, really. Hit the PR after the break for a peek at Mr. Houston's official nickname, if you're into that sort of thing.

Topware Interactive's Two Words II: Castle Defence is the first iOS game to allow players to control the action with their eyes.
The latest update for the app introduces 3D-ET technology, while uses the iPad 2's front-facing camera to follow the gamer's eye movements. According to Topware, this enables the players to "look around corners" and change the perspective of the castle defence game by moving their eyes.
The company added that the eye-tracking technology has also been available in the free Lite version of the game.
"By introducing the new Eye-tracking technology we are ahead of the competition once more and will expand this edge in the future," said Topware's CEO Dirk P. Hassinger.
"Right now we are adapting the system for platforms like PC or Mac and will also present some challenging 3D surprises within the next couple of months."

Lion's share of revenues enjoyed by an elite few, analyst group claims
More than half of the money made from the top 300 iPhone games is channelled to just ten publishers, new data suggests.
Mobile analytics group Distimo suggests that Apple’s booming games platform no longer helps smaller studios compete on an even playing field with the more established mobile publishers such as EA and Gameloft.
And microtransactions are becoming the market’s new growth sector, Distimo said.
Now 35 per cent of the App Store’s top 300 free games is monetised via in-app purchases.
Total revenue generated by the App Store’s top grossing games increased 79 per cent year-on-year, the analyst report added, but only ten firms will enjoy the lion’s share of the money.

Fiscal first quarter sees sales of $57m, up 9 per cent year-on-year.
Electronic Arts has reported its fiscal first quarter financials, and they show more growth for its mobile gaming division.
EA Mobile's sales were $57 million for the quarter, up 9% year-on-year. The publisher highlighted its success on iOS, claiming two of the top 10 paid iPhone games and two of the top 10 paid iPad games in June 2011 in its financials filing.
Overall, EA's net revenues were $999 million for the quarter, meaning mobile accounted for 6% of the company's sales.
CEO John Riccitiello also gave his summary on the rapid pace of change within the games industry, fuelled partly by mobile devices. "Consider that just 18 months ago, there was no iPad, Google was just experimenting with Android and most big games were limited to a single revenue opportunity at launch," he told analysts.
"On smartphones and tablets like the iPhone and iPad, the top paid apps are all games. Recognize that the fastest-growing revenue streams for console, PC, smartphones and tablets are all digital, and that EA is partnering with its retail and platform partners to help jointly grow these digital revenue streams."

Services like Spotify, which had an anything but subtle launch last week, help solve the evergreen issue of limited local storage by streaming millions of tracks to your devices. But streaming services require cell reception to operate (unless you've elected to store music locally), and often carry monthly fees. We've spent a fair amount of time testing Kingston's Wi-Drive, which lets you access music, videos, and other files from a handful of devices simultaneously over WiFi -- assuming you've loaded that content to the portable media server's 16GB ($130) or 32GB ($175) of built-in storage. The device worked well during our review process earlier this month, and now you can pick up one of your own at sites like Amazon and Newegg, or at Fry's and J&R US retail outlets. The server is likely to be a better fit for families than individuals simply looking to boost their iOS device storage, due to both price and capacity limitations, but if you need to stream media to several devices at once during your next road trip, for example, then the Wi-Drive may be worth the investment.

Less than ten days after iOS 4.3.4 parachuted in to fix that nasty PDF exploit, Apple's gone and dropped another. So what'll Cupertino's latest fix today? Build 8L1 -- or 8E600 on 4.2.10 if you're rocking CDMA -- apparently nixes a vulnerability with "certificate validation," or you know, Apple's just really fond of keeping all you hackers on your toes. Either way, time to fire up iTunes, unless of course, you're already living in the future.
Update: Turns out you can still (tether) jailbreak with redSn0w. Peep the more coverage link below.

July 25th, 2011, 23:47 Posted By: wraggster
Epic's Mike Capps believes that the proliferation of cheap mobile apps could damage the next generation of console games.
Speaking to Industrygamers, Capps explained that 99 cent games pose less of a threat to a premium iOS release than they do to AAA titles like Gears Of War 3.
"I'm more worried that you can get a really good 99 cent game that occupies you for hours and hours on end and how that impacts $60 SKUs," he said.
"I'm not as worried about how it impacts Infinity Blade – I think there will always be room for a premium SKU on a mobile platform. And I think as more buyers [enter the mobile market], there will be more people who are willing to spend a bit more for quality."
"But I do worry about what it means for the next generation of console games. Are people really going to want to spend $60 on a game?... It's not a sustainable business model. I'm not sure how it all ends up."
This echoes similar comments made by EA Sports' Andrew Wilson to GamesIndustry.biz last week, when he said that, "there will come a time where the consumer is simply not prepared to pay $60 up-front for a game."
Capps also cited the availability of services like Netflix on Xbox Live as more damaging to Shadow Complex than rival games like Limbo or Castle Crashers.
"If you fired up your dashboard right there, if you already bought Netflix, you have tons and tons of awesome content that's bite sized in 1.5 to 2 hour chunks. So that was our competition, getting mindshare in the dashboard, more than it was against the other games in the space."

Apple has reportedly set a September 5 US release date for the as yet unannounced iPhone 5.
That's according to a senior executive at Swiss carrier Swisscom, who also reportedly told iPhone Italia under conditions of anonymity that the device will rollout globally a month later on October 5.
According to IBTimes, Swisscom is Apple's partner in Switzerland, together with carriers Orange and Sunrise.
The CEO of US telecoms firm Verizon also confirmed in a conference call with analysts over the weekend that the new iPhone will be released sometime "in the fall".
Last week, after reporting record revenue and earnings for its most recent financial quarter, Apple dropped the biggest hint yet that it's to launch iPhone 5 in the coming months, referring to an upcoming "product transition" set to impact its September quarter.

via http://0xff.akop.org/2011/07/18/cove...-to-spark-360/
The Xbox Live/Windows Marketplace merger came and went without any serious issues – a minor change broke “Last played date” in Game History, resulting in all games having been last played almost 40 years before an Xbox 360 would become available (this was addressed in a fix shortly thereafter). Another change that several of you may have noticed is reordering of the “Compare Games” list – opponent’s games are now listed in alphabetical order – for privacy reasons no doubt.
Anyway, “coverflow”, not dissimilar to that of the NXE is coming to the next Spark 360 release. The feature will be optional, enabled in landscape mode for friends by default.
Coverflow
And finally, not related to me, but still worth mentioning is fMSX for Android - Marat has released fMSX for Froyo and Gingerbread.

Snes9x EX is a free Android port of the Super Nintendo emulator Snes9x.
Quote:
Emulator for the SNES/Super Famicom based on Snes9x 1.43. Beware of Market apps using Snes9x commercially under different names (To the best of my knowledge, it´s used by all current SNES emulators on the Market). Snes9x has a non-commercial use license and these apps cannot legally be sold or force you to view ads. Furthermore, many of these unlicensed versions are from scam developers who constantly remove and repost the apps under different names to rip off unsuspecting users. Snes9x EX is properly licensed, as are all my other emulator apps. I´ll also answer questions related to this app on the official Snes9x message boards.
Features:
Accurate emulation and similar compatibility to Snes9x 1.43 on the PC
Full quality 44KHz stereo sound
Supports games in .smc, .sfc, .fig, and .1 formats, optionally in .zip files
Super Scope support, touch screen to fire, touch off-screen to push Cursor button
Mouse Support, see Snes9x EX section on website for instructions
Configurable on-screen multi-touch controls & keyboard support (needs Android 2.1+ for multi-touch, up to 3 touches supported at once)
Multiplayer-capable Wiimote + Classic Controller and iControlPad support (no need to purchase a separate app)
Backup memory and save state support, auto-save and ten manual slots for save states. State files from Snes9x 1.43 should work on Snes9x EX and vice-versa.
Portrait/Landscape auto-orientation support
