Publisher EA has for the first time detailed exactly how its freshly launched content portal Origin will work on iOS.
The system bears more than a passing resemblance to Microsoft’s Xbox Live. And it won’t support Apple’s Game Centre wither, with EA clearly hoping to forge its own network of users.
Friends lists will show users both on iOS and also on PC. Launching games directly from the app will be possible. Other things like leader boards and friend-to-friend messaging are also included.
In all Origin on iOS seems very much to be squaring up to the likes of not only Game Centre but also OpenFeint and all the other games-network alternatives.
But how will EA get people interested when they already have an established presence on rival networks? Simple – by offering in-game freebies to those who use it.

Remember that PDF exploit from last year that JailbreakMe 2.0 was using to unlock your iPhone with just a few taps? Well, Apple patched it. And now it's apparently back. According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple acknowledged the exploit, and is working on an update at this very moment. In addition to the JailbreakMe 3.0 hack that came to light last week, the hole can also be used for some not-so-noble efforts, like grabbing your contacts database, accessing saved passwords, or activating your iPad or iPhone's built-in camera. And nobody wants that. For one reason or another, German authorities have taken the lead on encouraging Apple to investigate, and have also warned all users to avoid opening PDF docs from untrusted sources. And we're happy to echo that rather solid advice, given the implications. Ironically, JailbreakMe includes a patch for the very hole that allows it to function in the first place, so if you're terrified that rogue PDFs will take over your devices, that's an option to consider in the meantime.

As an industry struggles to match Apple’s iPad success in the growing but hot tablet market, could Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) already have plans to branch out with a new version of the iPad with a crisper screen aimed at the professional market?
That’s what This Is My Next suggested Thursday, writing that Apple has a new iPad in the works scheduled for introduction later this year, probably around the time that Apple unveils a new iPhone. The device, which will supposedly be called the iPad HD, is said to have a “double resolution screen” checking in at 2048 pixels by 1536 pixels, and would be accompanied by an iPad version of Final Cut Pro, according to the report.
Suggestions that a third iPad was on the way in 2011 have surfaced before, with many Apple watchers split over whether this device would have a screen good enough for Apple to attach the Retina Display label it uses for the iPhone 4. Such a device would be an interesting take on the market, however, given that it could introduce complexity for application developers trying to make sure their apps run on both the professional and regular iPad models.
This Is My Next suggested thinking about the new iPad as the Macbook Pro of the iPad lineup, compared to the iPad 2 as the regular Macbook. Without knowing exactly how the specs will line up (or, of course, whether or not the thing actually exists) it’s difficult to forecast the impact on the tablet market, but Apple may have decided not to give rivals any chance to carve out niche categories for themselves.

Apparently, folks in the US love gaming on their mobile devices and really don't mind forking over dead presidents to do so. That's according to a recent 30-day study by Nielsen pertaining to apps across mobile platforms. The company found gaming apps to be the most popular in that period, citing that 64 percent of users played and 93 percent would pay to play. The average amount of time spent gaming was 7.8 hours, although iOS users took the award for most dedicated by nearly doubling that to 14.7 hours. Android loyalists followed with 9.3 hours of fun times, but those with BlackBerry, Windows, and "feature phones" kept things closer to business hitting under five hours each. Also notable, is that people rocking Berries and dumbphones usually opted for pre-installed games over downloads. You'll find the full breakdown by hitting the source link, and we'll get back to besting our Real Racing 2 lap times.

Your friends may think that's a MacBook Air sitting on your coffee table -- but they'd be wrong and would deserve to be ridiculed. Taking its aesthetic cue from the Zaggmate, MIC's new Aluminum Keyboard Buddy Case brings both a protective shell and a (nearly) full QWERTY set to your iPad 2. When pressed against the tablet face-to-face, the Buddy Case's magnets will automatically put your iPad to sleep, with its curved back guarding your precious slate from dirt, scratches and Hun invasions. To transition into keyboard mode, all you have to do is slide your 'Pad into a slot and let your fingers roam free. Powered by a rechargeable lithium-polymer battery, this $50 peripheral also allows users to control their iPad's brightness and media playback. Unfortunately, though, it'll only hold your slate at one, fixed angle, so make sure you have a neck before buying one.

So you flew around the world for a photo assignment, camera bag packed full of high-end lenses, but forgot the DSLR on the kitchen counter. Not to worry! You never leave home without your iPhone 4 and its new must-have accessory: the iPhone SLR Mount. $190 scores you one of these aluminum bad boys, eager to pair with your multi-thousand dollar Canon or Nikon optics, bringing "powerful depth of field" and manual focus to your smartphone's itsy bitsy image sensor. You can reportedly use the new pricey mobile rig to capture photos with shallow depth of field, without the need to add one of those "unethical" $5 digital filter apps. The accessory is ready to ship, so you're just 24 hours (and a couple hundred dollars) away from having this life-changing masterpiece sent straight to your door. As for us? We're holding out a bit longer for the iPad version.

Company says it has paid out $2.5bn to iOS app developers since its launch in July 2008.
Apple has announced that its App Store has now generated more than 15 billion downloads across iPhone, iPod touch and iPad devices.
The company has also paid out more than $2.5 billion to developers since the store's launch in July 2008. The store now has a catalogue of more than 425,000 apps - including 100,000 native iPad apps - with an addressable base of 200 million iOS devices.
"In just three years, the revolutionary App Store has grown to become the most exciting and successful software marketplace the world has ever seen," says SVP of worldwide product marketing Philip Schiller. "Thank you to all of our amazing developers who have filled it with over 425,000 of the coolest apps and to our over 200 million iOS users for surpassing 15 billion downloads."
Three developers shared the limelight with Apple in its press release to mark the milestone: Smule, Epic Games and Callaway Diital Arts.
"We knew the iPad was going to be a revolutionary storytelling device, but never could have anticipated it would become so popular, so quickly," says the latter's CEO Nicholas Callaway.

A new report from sources familiar with Apple's iPad line-up says Apple may release a new iPad this year but not the iPad 3. This new model will showcase a new high-res display with much greater pixel density however will not be 3rd generation; it has been called at this time the "iPad 2 Plus".
FBR Capital Markets analyst Craig Berger stated that based on his watch of Apple's overseas supply chain, he can conclude that Apple could release an updated iPad 2, an "iPad 2 Plus," this year. He was tipped that component makers have received quotes from Apple suggesting a device, however no shipment or schedule in this regard has been confirmed.
Berger mentioned that Apple's migration could fix the iPad 2 Plus with a pixel density of 132 ppi to 250-300 ppi (ppi = pixels per square inch)(the current iPhone 4 is 336 ppi). Despite the certainty in his information, Berger cautions one from believing right off the bat that the iPad 2 Plus is a go. He himself would need to hear more information about the new hardware before "fully" believing Apple was migrating to this alternative.
Berger's information goes contrary to recent reports about the iPad 3 releasing this year (September-October). If he is indeed correct, Apple may release an expansion to the iPad 2 with a higher-res display. Information regarding other possible features that could be placed on this "iPad 2 Plus" are unknown.

The iPhone 5 looks set for launch in September after more rumours of the inevitable device hit the internet.
Sources at component makers told DigiTimes Taiwan-based notebook maker Pegatron Technology has landed orders for 15 million iPhone 5s (iPhone 4S) from Apple, with shipping set for September this year.
Apparently, according to the sources, the iPhone 5 "does not seem to have any major update from iPhone 4".
The DigiTimes report backs up a Bloomberg story from last month that claimed the iPhone 5 "closely resembles" its predecessor and will launch in September.
The iPhone 5 will reportedly sport a speedier A5 processor – the same chip that powers the iPad 2.
It'll also supposedly boast an eight megapixel camera – a significant jump up from the iPhone 4's five megapixel lens.
The phone will run the new iOS 5, which apparently adds improved messaging and photo-sharing features.

Darkness 2 project director Sheldon Carter has said he believes that mobile devices, including the Apple iPad, will become a real competitor for gamers' attention in the future.
"I think the home console experience is going to be with us for a long time. Do I think that the iPad will encroach? Absolutely, it has to," said Carter in an interview with CVG. "You think about how many iPads are out there already, iPads and other mobile devices. But I don't think it'll be exclusive, I don't think that just because somebody buys one of those things they wouldn't buy a console."
"I think there's always going to be a market for high-end, for people who just want to play the most cutting edge.I think there's always going to be a market for, I want to flop down on the couch and sit back."
Carter was also open minded about the idea of creating a Darkness game for the Apple tablet.
"As a thought experiment yeah I think it'd be pretty awesome. Swiping with the demon arm and grabbing with the demon arm on an iPad, that'd be pretty cool."
Digital Extremes is based in Canada. As well as developing The Darkness 2, the team has a strong background in assisting other developers with multi-platform releases, including Homefront for PC and Bioshock for PS3.

Phillip Elmer-Dewitt draws on several sources to argue that 'Apple has become not a monopoly (a single seller), but a monopsony — the one buyer that can control an entire market.' According to Dewitt, Apple uses its $70 billion cash hoard to 'pay for the construction cost (or a significant fraction of it) of [tech factories] in exchange for exclusive rights to the output production of the factory for a set period of time...' This gives Apple 'access to new component technology months or years before its rivals and allows it to release groundbreaking products that are actually impossible to duplicate.'

Microsoft Corp has demanded that Samsung Electronics Co Ltd pay $15 for each smartphone handset it makes based on Google Inc's Android operating system. The software giant claims to own a wide range of patents used in the mobile platform. From the article: 'Samsung would likely seek to lower the payment to about $10 in exchange for a deeper alliance with Microsoft for the U.S. company's Windows platform, the Maeil Business Newspaper quoted unnamed industry officials as saying.

The New York Times, which recently started charging iPad readers $20 a month, has a lot of angry digital subscribers after an update broke the NYTimes for iPad application. The update was designed to make it easier for readers to subscribe to the Times through iTunes (irony!) but instead left readers unable to access any articles. Worse, the Times didn't bother to fix the app over the long weekend or reply to users who complained on Twitter. It's not the first time developers have broken an iPad application with a poorly constructed update, but reader complaints noted that the size of the New York Times and the high price it charges make this gaffe particularly galling. Angry users have driven the app's rating down to less than two out of five stars

The relationship between Linux and Android is on a technical level not hard to grasp — there's a shared kernel, but the application and interface layers are quite different. But, as Brian Proffitt points out, there are differences of philosophy and of community — which hasn't stopped Adobe from touting its Andoid dev tools as proof of its devotion to Linux.

One of Microsoft's hottest new profit centers is a smartphone platform you've definitely heard of: Android. Google's Linux-based mobile operating system is a favorite target for Microsoft's patent attorneys, who are suing numerous Android vendors and just today announced that another manufacturer has agreed to write checks to Microsoft every time it ships an Android device. Vendors paying off Microsoft for the right to use Android now include HTC, Velocity Micro, General Dynamics, Onkyo Corp. and Wistron. Microsoft likely makes more money from Android than its own Windows phone platform, and its latest patent agreement announced Tuesday indicates Microsoft is also going after Google's Linux-based Chromebooks."

Recent hacking advancements by groups such as Lulz Security (LulzSec) and Anonymous have caused a lot of stir in the news around the world. Companies such as MasterCard, Sony, and others have been primary targets for the AntiSec campaign that is on the loose and the damage that has come about is drastic. Personal information is at stake along with other important documents that house plans for major company's strategies and "next moves." The Wall Street Journal reports that the hacker's latest target was Apple Inc.
According to the source, the hackers got a hold of usernames and passwords directly off the Apple server due to a security flaw. The document that was released contained over 26 administrative username and password combinations. Although small in comparison to previous attacks, the hackers have stated that "they are busy elsewhere." The question is, who is the next target? Government agencies, corporations, and even private companies have been targets for this group so one can never know where they will strike next. In response to the hacking of Apple, no respective spokesperson made any comment about the situation.
