Minor update may also be called the iPhone 4S
The upcoming Apple iPhone 5 may arrive later than previously suggested with delayed production meaning the device may only appear in October or November.
Last week a Reuters report citing unnamed sources said the next-generation iPhone would ship during September however based on checks with component suppliers, Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo issued a note suggesting production in August with an October or November release date.
According to Apple Insider, Kuo also claimed that the iPhone 5 would amount to a minor update, featuring the faster dual-core A5 processor from the iPad 2 and a higher resolution 8 megapixel rear-facing camera. A move to a different vendor of radio 'baseband' chip, namely Qualcomm, was also suggested along with an improved antenna design.
TheGadgets blog claimed that an Apple source said the phone would be called the iPhone 4S, rather than the iPhone 5, and will ship with a version of iOS 4 rather than iOS 5.

The US Army is calling upon Android app developers to help make military life a little less stressful -- and, perhaps, a lot safer. Under a new Army framework known as the Mobile/Handheld Computing Environment (CE), third-party developers will be able to create and submit tactical Android apps, using the military's CE Product Developer's Kit. The framework, originally prototyped by the folks over at MITRE, represents the latest phase in the Army's ongoing campaign to incorporate smartphone technology on the battlefield. Any app operating under the CE system will be interoperable across all command systems, and, as you'd expect, will be tightly secured. The kit won't be released to developers until July, but the Army has already begun tinkering with its baseline suite of Mission Command apps, which includes tools designed to facilitate mapping, blue force tracking, and Tactical Ground Reporting. On the hardware side of the equation, the Army is planning to deploy a new handheld known as the Joint Battle Command-Platform, or JBC-P. The two-pound JBC-P is essentially a military-friendly smartphone designed to run on a variety of existing radio networks, while supporting the full suite of forthcoming apps. The JBC-P will be tested this October, and will likely be issued on a wider basis in 2013.

See that up there? That could be your next iPhone -- or it could be a tear-shaped dream. It's a mock-up of what is said to be the iPhone 5, according to anonymous sources quoted by Joshua Topolsky. A continuation of the concepts laid out in our post-CES look at what's next for Apple, the design here is said to be thin, metal-backed, tapered, and sporting a 3.7-inch display with the same 960 x 640 resolution in the iPhone 4's retina display -- resulting in a slight drop from that phone's vaunted 326ppi density. The home button is quite obviously enlarged, possibly adding some thumbable gestures into the mix. Internals are said to include a "swipable" area, possibly meaning NFC, along with a Qualcomm Gobichipset with support for CDMA and GSM, so this could be the one phone to rule all the carriers. Or, it might wind up only ever having domain over a single .PSD file. To us, well, it looks a little too thin to be packing all that and a bag of antennas as suggested and, with all the weight at the top, we can see these things flying out of hands left and right. But, we're certainly willing to be surprised. Place your bets in comments below.
Update: The source has been updated with a note indicating that the bevel may be "a little exaggerated" in the above mock-up and that the back may not be metal after all.

doperative writes with this quote from a speculative piece at Business Insider about Apple's real motive behind its recent lawsuitagainst Samsung's Galaxy devices:
"Android is free. In some cases, it's even cheaper than free, with Google sharing some revenue from Google searches on Android phones with partners. This is hugely disruptive to both Microsoft and Apple's business models; Microsoft because they make money on software licenses, and Apple on hardware. And this disruptive approach is winning: Android is surging past iOS in marketshare. A lawsuit from a big company, even if doomed, still takes a lot of time, energy and money to fight off. So Samsung or someone else might settle, accepting to pay some form of license. If that happens, Apple can go around to the other manufacturers asking for the same license and have a much stronger claim. And now OEMs have to factor that cost into the decision to choose Android. And all of a sudden, Android has a price."Samsung has fired back with a lawsuit of its own.

Humans, they just love mixing the old with the new. To wit, the iCade gaming cabinet for the iPad, anApril Fools' joke that was just a fun idea this time last year, has gone and turned very real, replete withFCC certification and now a pre-order page. The Bluetooth-communicating iPad enclosure seems to have originally been on sale for immediate delivery, but ThinkGeek has burned through its first shipment of units faster than you can say "Atari's Greatest Hits." The second batch of $100 iCades is expected by May 20th at the very latest, although orders are being taken only from the US for now. The rest of the world needn't despair, however -- we hear building one of your own is a pleasurable and rewarding experience.

Less than a week after confirming that a flaw in Skype for Android could leak sensitive user information, the Internet calling company issued an urgent update to fix the problem. Skype informed customers that 'After a period of developing and testing we have released a new version of the Skype for Android application onto the Android Market, containing a fix to the vulnerability reported to us. Please update to this version [1.0.0.983] as soon as possible in order to help protect your information.' Skype says it has had no reported examples of third-party apps misusing information from the Skype directory on Android devices, though is keeping an eye on things."http://it.slashdot.org/story/11/04/2...p-Privacy-Hole

Android Central has taken a close look at the new Transformer tablet from Asus, giving it an overall positive review, with minor points deducted for a 'plasticy' feel. The Transformer joins the Motorola Xoom in the world of Honeycomb (Android 3.0), and has very similar, high-end specs (though it's Wi-Fi only) with one big difference: the Transformer is marketed with a not-included-in-the-price attachable keyboard that adds a secondary battery. Notably, given inevitable comparison to the Xoom, the SD card slot, and Flash 10.2, work out of the box. The reviewer says Asus has done a credible job of making Honeycomb work well with a keyboard, but I wonder what other OSes will eventually be hacked onto this device. 16 hours of battery life in a netbook-sized computer sure sounds good to me, but I might want that to be with standard Linux apps instead of only with Android.

The second quarter financial results for Apple show revenues of $24.6 billion for the iPhone and iPad maker, with a staggering $5.99 billion in profits for the three months ended March 26th.
Revenues rose significantly from $13.5 billion at the same time last year, with a total of 59 per cent of all revenues coming from outside the U.S. Profits were up from $3.07 billion at the same time last year.
A total of 3.76 million Macs (up 28 per cent) were sold during the quarter, along with 18.6 million iPhones (up 113 per cent), 9.02 million iPods (down from previous results but ahead of internal estimates), and 4.69 million iPads (including the iPad 2).
Lifetime sales for all iOS devices are now put at 189 million, although speaking in the company's financial conference call CFO Peter Oppenheimer did not break the figure down by formats.
However, figures from a federal document used in the ongoing legal battle between Apple and Samsung mention lifetime sales of around 108 million iPhones, 60 million iPod touch, and 19 million iPads.
As well as breaking company record for its March quarter Apple also revealed that iTunes enjoyed its best quarter ever. The App Store now offers 350,000 apps and has paid out a total of $2 billion to iOS developers.
Oppenheimer also pointed out that the iPhone's 113 per cent year-on-year growth was well ahead of the 74 per cent growth of the smartphone market as a whole. Apple sales grew 155 per cent year-on-year in the U.S. following rollout on the Verizon network, with sales in greater China up almost 250 per cent.
"With quarterly revenue growth of 83 per cent and profit growth of 95 per cent, we're firing on all cylinders," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs. "We will continue to innovate on all fronts throughout the remainder of the year."
"We are extremely pleased with our record March quarter revenue and earnings and cash flow from operations of over $6.2 billion," said Oppenheimer. "Looking ahead to the third fiscal quarter of 2011, we expect revenue of about $23 billion."

Security researchers unveiled the scandalous discovery that Apple's iPhone and iPad are recording the user's geographic location to a secret file.
Revealing the discovery at the O'Reilly Where 2.0 Conference in Santa Clara, researchers Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden said that iPhone and iPad have been "storing a long list of locations and time stamps" ever since the iOS 4 update.
"We're not sure why Apple is gathering this data, but it's clearly intentional, as the database is being restored across backups, and even device migrations," they wrote on the O'Reilly Radar blog.
The researchers also showed that the data file was "unencrypted and unprotected" and is transferred to any computer that has been synched with an iOS device. The file can be accessed on the iPhone or iPad.
Allen and Warden published an OS X application which, when run on a system that syncs with the iPhone or iPad, it will extract the hidden file from automatic backups and visualises the data on a map. The Mac iPhoneTracker application can be found here.
Thankfully the pair also pointed out that the file did not appear to be sent anywhere without the users knowledge. However Allen's phone was also shown to have stored "hundreds of thousands of wireless access points" which the phone had been in range of over the past year.
The astounding ramifications of the discovery include the fact that any lost or stolen iPad 3G or iPhone can reveal the entire movement patterns of the owner, so too a lost or stolen laptop which had synced to an iPad or iPhone.
A Guardian report suggested that Apple will be legally in the clear due to a section of Apple's massive iTunes terms and conditions which says: "Apple and our partners and licensees may collect, use, and share precise location data, including the real-time geographic location of your Apple computer or device."
At the Where 2.0 conference, Allen and Warden speculating on why Apple might record the data, suggested it might be something to do with Apple's new Geofencing functionality.
"I love the company, I was just pretty sad to discover this was how they were handling my location data. It just bummed me out really," said Warden.

Apple could probably plaster most of its Cupertino campus with patents and patent applications if it wanted to, but we're guessing there's few that make it more happy than a design patent for a flagship device -- like the iPhone 4. That's now been granted a year after the company filed the application, which details the "ornamental design for an electronic device with graphical user interface" in words and pictures. What's more, Apple's now also finally snagged a design patent for the 2007 iPod touch, and it's picked up a few other patents related to iTunes, Apple TV, and one for a "touch screen RFID tag reader." Hit up the link below for a closer look at those.

An iPhone version of eccentric iOS adventure Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP hits the App Store on Thursday.
Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP Micro will cost £1.79 and include all the same content as the original iPad game.
Those who already own the iPad version but now want to play on their iPhone are also being catered for. An update, also due to go live on Thursday, makes it a universal app playable across all compatible Apple touch screen devices.
"The S:S&S EP project began life on the smaller touchtronic machines so many of the key art and design decisions were made with this very particular form factor in mind," read a post on the game's website.
"While the size of the iPad is certainly a treat for S:S&S EP, the tiny machine is definitely 'the way it was meant to be' - it's an entire little world you can slip into your pocket at any time.
"In many many ways this is the most significant launch for the project and it is also something of a homecoming - so please help us make some noize!"
Developed by Critter Crunch/Clash of Heroes studio Capybara Games, the game originally launched on iPad last month, picking up a 7/10 from Eurogamer's John Teti.
"There's no doubt of the passion and heart that went into the creation of Sword & Sworcery. The artistry is extraordinary," he wrote. "The resulting art is not, not quite."

Information from mobile marketing data firm Flurry suggests that Apple might have made some changes to the algorithms which govern the chart positions on the iOS App Store.
The changes are thought to have been made fairly recently, and first evidenced themselves with the rise of the Facebook app to the top of the number one position in the free downloads chart, where previously it had sat in the upper teens.
Analysts at several mobile data and ad tracking firms believe that this could be the result of Apple re-weighting the factors which govern position, giving new importance to the amount of use which apps receive once installed.
Website Inside Mobile Apps posited the change when it noticed the sudden rise up the chart of the Facebook app, which sees less downloads than many others in the chart, but is used by millions of people every day. Apple has so far refused to comment on what changes it has made, if any.
"We've been noticing changes in the Top Free rankings for at least three days now," Flurry marketing VP Peter Farago told Inside Mobile Apps. "From our point of view, Apple is absolutely considering more than just downloads, which we believe is the right direction to go in to measure the true popularity of an app."
Up until now, many companies have been paying networks like Flurry for placed downloads within other Apps, giving games high visibility in the download-centric chart and generating further downloads in turn. If Apple's rating algorithms have changed then that may no longer be such an effective strategy.
Whilst that may result in a higher quality of app, as developers attempt to retain chart position through stickiness rather than downloads, it also makes that front page much harder to break into.
If the algorithms do place as much importance on usage as the reports suggest, then the 39.5 million estimated DAU for Facebook's app are going to be hard to shift from that top spot.
Should the rumours of the changes prove to be true, they may be welcomed by many developers, who have called for changes to the current system of promoting the most downloaded titles, which many feel is prioritising throwaway games over higher quality endeavours.

A major bug in the Android DHCP implementation has forced network administrators to (effectively) ban the use of such devices on the Princeton campus. In the last few months, Princeton has had to kick more than 400 Android devices off the campus network for using IP addresses well beyond the allotted DHCP lease (to the detriment of other users), sending invalid DHCPREQUEST messages after lease expiration, and a variety of other wacky behaviors. The link provides a clearly documented explanation of the buggy behavior, as does this largely neglected bug report. Without doubt, this buggy behavior is affecting other, less vigilant networks, and disrupting Wi-Fi traffic for Android and non-Android devices alike."http://mobile.slashdot.org/story/11/...Campus-Network

Games which offer credit for downloading other apps could be barred
Apple is thought to be slamming the door on an incentive scheme where users are offered in-game credits for downloading other App Store games.
The App Store vendor is said to be removing “very high profile” games that promise in-game money as reward for downloading apps from other developers.
Apple has not publicly commented on the matter, though mobile games publicationPocketGamer.biz says “well-placed development sources” have confirmed that a ban is being initiated.
“Several games, some of them very high profile and previously available on the App Store, have now been rejected with the reason given that they offer virtual currency in exchange for other app downloads,” the publication said.
The publication suggested that, due to the frequency of the matter, Apple has likely making “wholesale changes” to the iOS ecosystem.
‘Download incentivisation’ is said to have become a key business opportunity to App Store developers, particularly those which struggle with the conundrum of monetising free-to-play games.
The process of in-game incentives usually involves a developer and mobile networking partner such as TapJoy or OpenFeint.
A game will draw attention to other games supported by a networking partner. “The vast majority of the freemium industry” use the model, PocketGamer.biz said.
Big Time Gangsta (developed by Glu Mobile) rewards users 61 credits for buying a $4.99 app called Cleopatra's Pyramid (developed by Game Duell).
Such credits, bought outright, would have normally cost $9.99.
It is unknown how, in this instance, both parties share the revenue gained.
Glu Mobile uses the App Store networking service Tapjoy, which previously claimed to have helped enticed 1.5 million additional downloads per day using the scheme.
