Earlier this week Microsoft announced an API Mapping tool help iPhone/iOS developers "find their way when they discover the Windows Phone platform."
The API Mapping tool acts as a translation device for iOS developers unfamiliar with Windows Phone 7 coding language. The mapping tool does this by allowing iOS developers to pick out the iOS API calls and quickly look up "equivalent classes, methods and notification events in WP7."
The mapping tool as of now only includes translations for Network/Internet, User Interface, and Data Management related programs. Audio/Video, Graphics/Animation, Performance, and Security related API translations will be added at a later time.
It's important to note this tool is just a starting point for developers to learn about the WP7 platform and by no means will include a translation of all API's between the platforms.
This mapping tool seems to be a very blatant attempt by Microsoft...

If you’ve been sitting on the fence trying to decide whether or not to jailbreak your precious iDevice, Jay Freeman, better known as Saurik, has a few good reasons to take the plunge. Suarik who is the brains behind the unofficial app store Cydia, recently sat down with Robert Scoble at the Mobile Connections conference to discuss the merits of jailbreaking. The Q and A session also introduced us to the newest member of Jay’s team, Britta Gustafson, who is the “community manager and user experience person.”
Most of our readers here at ModMyi are well aware of the many good reasons to jailbreak their iOS devices. But, for some who are a little less familiar with the whole process of jailbreaking, Jay outlines a few of the benefits of leaving the confines of the official App Store.

App developer, FeiYingInfo today snuck through Monino, what is quite possibly the most blatant example of copyright infringement that you’re likely to see any time soon. Although Monino appears at first glance to be a genuine Nintendo game, featuring everyone’s favorite Italian plumber, it is in reality just a poor imitation of the beloved classic that we all grew up with as kids. Monino did, however, manage to reach number six on the list of top-selling paid apps in the App Store, before being pulled a few hours later. Not bad for a blatant rip-off with poor game play mechanics.
But really, who wouldn’t want to play Mario on their iPhone? Everyone except Nintendo, that’s who. The fact that this game was approved at all is almost as amazing as the game itself. Whoever was responsible for approving this app obviously hasn’t played a video game in the last twenty years.

The iPad2 went on sale in several new countries today, the largest markets of which were in Asia. Hours ago, Japan, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Turkey and UAE joined the expanding list of nations to now boast iPad 2 availability.
Similar to the first wave of international launches one month ago, long lines (sometime 500 people or more) gathered at individual Apple stores awaiting the official kick-off of sales. Despite the rebuilding and recovery efforts still taking place in earthquake-ravaged Japan, the flagship Apple Store in Tokyo was described by some as a feeding frenzy, with consistent lines extending for blocks.
According to one report published earlier today by the Foreign Associated Press, 16-year-old mainland Chinese student Dandy Weng waited in line for over 12 hours in a torrential downpour outside the Apple Store in Hong Kong. "I haven't slept in 48 hours. I'm very tired but excited," he told AFP

GameStop is wasting little time expanding the scope of Spawn Labs, its newly minted "cloud gaming division." A recent job listing for the company seeks a senior software engineer to be "responsible for the development and maintenance of our Player software on Android tablets and smartphones." (Additional job postings are for key roles in the division, which is also looking to port the Spawn Player app to Linux-based systems.)
Upon announcing the acquisition of the game-streaming tech outfit late last month, GameStop laid out a clear goal: "Once the Spawn Labs integration and testing on a new consumer interface is complete, users will have immediate access to a wide selection of high-definition video games on demand on any internet-enabled device." Android phones and tablets (and Linux systems) would appear to be next on the checklist, but what about iOS devices?
"Getting the audio and video onto the iPhone or iPad is not too hard," Spawn Labs' David Wilson pointed out in the community forums (some months ago). "Getting game control in a way that works for console games is hard -- but only because Apple controls both the physical and Bluetooth interfaces to the device." In response to a followup question, he added, "Yes, Android is more within our control than the iPhone."
While Spawn Labs has operated as a sort of "Slingbox for gaming," with its Spawn HD-720box providing the technology to stream your game consoles' content to a computer, GameStop appears to be angling to cast a much wider net -- not just to stream your console games on more devices, but to sell you new games to stream on more devices. The retail giant has also scooped up a digital distribution platform in Impulse, which would seem just the thing to provide that "wide selection of high-definition video games on demand" -- just as soon as Spawns Labs' "new consumer interface is complete," of course. (Muahahahahaha!)

By now you've probably seen the latest spectacle to consume the white iPhone 4: it's thicker than the black model. The image above illustrates the point using a piece of lead from a mechanical pencil. So what, you say, in righteous indignation to a device that shipped ten months late. Well, the size difference creates a potential consumer issue since cases (at least the good ones) are manufactured against the tight tolerances supplied by Apple. We've confirmed ourselves, that an Incase slider that fits a black iPhone 4 just fine has to be forced into place on the new white model. Unfortunately, Apple's own spec page doesn't highlight the change in thickness (measured at 9.5mm by TiPb). Instead it still shows a 9.3mm depth with a tiny disclaimer stating, "Actual size and weight vary by configuration and manufacturing process." The result is confusion -- will this case fit or won't it? -- which is never a good thing for consumers.
But why is the white iPhone 4 thicker? Phil Schiller mentioned that Apple needed to add extra UV protection among other tweaks, in an attempt to reduce the "unexpected interactions" between the white cover and the internal components. As such, Apple apparently needed to sacrifice some slimness for a better functioning white phone. In the end, we have what looks to be four different size / button configurations that must be considered when purchasing a shrink-wrapped case for your white iPhone 4, black iPhone 4, white Verizon iPhone 4, or black Verizon iPhone 4. Good luck with that.

Three employees from Taiwan-based Foxconn Electronics' (Hon Hai Precision Industry's) plants in Shenzhen, China, have been charged with leaking the iPad 2's design to outside accessory companies in China, according to a Chinese-language sznews.com report. Several online shopping retailers in China were able to sell iPad 2 protective case products before the iPad 2 was even launched, leading Foxconn to suspect that there might have been some employees leaking the design of iPad 2, which it reported to the local policehttp://apple.slashdot.org/story/11/0...-iPad-2-Design

PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 racer Bang Bang Racing is being ported to Tegra-powered Android devices.
The chunky-looking title is being shrunk down via the magic of NVIDIA's advanced Tegra processor.
Tegra allows for whizzy graphics and lots more computational power. NVIDIA has dubbed it a "computer-on-a-chip".
Bang Bang Racing offers top-down racing and reminds us of a Micro Machines game, which is no bad thing.
Players control their vehicles by touch, drawing a path on the track for their flashy sports cars to follow.
Those lucky enough to have a Tegra-powered super phone or tablet can nab the title from the Tegra Zone app, a marketplace for games which support the NVIDIA chip.
Developer Playbox Games hopes Bang Bang Racing will launch early next week.

You're probably familiar with Microsoft's long running assault on Android but, as noticed by Groklaw, Barnes and Noble has fired backsaying, 'Microsoft has asserted patents that extend only to arbitrary, outmoded, or non-essential design features, but uses these patents to demand that every manufacturer of an Android-based mobile device take a license from Microsoft and pay exorbitant licensing fees or face protracted and expensive patent infringement litigation.' Barnes and Noble goes on to assert that Microsoft violates 'antitrust laws, threatens competition for mobile device operating systems and is further evidence of Microsoft's efforts to dominate and control Android and other open source operating systems.' The PDF of the filing from two days ago is rife with accusations including, 'Microsoft intends to utilize its patents to control the activities of and extract fees from the designers, developers, and manufacturers of devices, including tablets, eReaders, and other mobile devices, that employ the Android Operating System.' and 'Microsoft has falsely and without justification asserted that its patents somehow provide it with the right to prohibit device manufacturers from employing new versions of the Android Operating System, or third party software.' Barnes and Noble does not mince words when explaining Microsoft's FUD campaign to both the public and developers in its attempts to suppress Android. It's good to see PJ still digging through massive court briefs to bring us the details on IP court battles."http://yro.slashdot.org/story/11/04/...s-Android-Suit

Apple has finally given 'Unpleasant Horse' the thumbs up, and you can grab it now for free on the App Store.
Unpleasant Horse is the first game from PopCap's "experimental" new games label 4th & Battery, through which it promises to release some of its "more experimental ideas" from within the reams of game prototypes that would not usually see the light of day.
It has players taking control of a dark horse that leaps through the sky, grabbing onto 'pretty ponies'... and slamming them into a pit of spinning blades. Mwah ha ha.
That's about it. Basic but fun and pretty funny. Although Apple didn't seem to think so when I originally rejected the game earlier this month.

Long-awaited device to finally hit key territories including the UK, US; iPad 2 hits Japan
Having missed the launch of the iPhone 4 way back in June 2010, Apple has confirmed that the white version of the handset will at last go on sale in key territories tomorrow.
The launch is planned for a number of territories starting with the UK, US tomorrow. Countries to follow shortly after include Ireland, Germany, France, Australia, Spain, New Zealand, Denmark, China, Sweden, Canada, Austria, Belgium and Japan.
“The white iPhone 4 has finally arrived and it’s beautiful,” Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing Philip Schiller stated. “We appreciate everyone who has waited patiently while we’ve worked to get every detail right.”
In addition, Apple has also confirmed that the iPad 2 will launch in Japan and other key Asian territories this week. It will hit China on May 6th.

We're taking this with a grain of salt, since it applies only to users of the cross-platform Appcelerator Titanium development environment, but it appears that Windows Phone 7 is facing an increasinglyuphill battle for mobile mind-share. At this point it should go without saying that a platform lives and dies by its developers and, according to Appcelerator, they're growing less and less interested in creating apps for Microsoft's smartphone OS. Only 29-percent of devs responded to the company's quarterly survey that they were "very interested" in putting their wares on WP7, a fall of 7 points from last quarter and far less than market leaders Android and iOS. News is even worse for RIM, which saw a fall of 11-points in developer interest for BlackBerry, and now trails the folks from Redmond. Again, this survey is based only on the responses of 2,760 developers using a particular product, so we'd refrain from calling the results incontrovertible. Still, it reinforces something that even a casual observer could discern: BlackBerry and Windows Phone 7 have a tough row to hoe. Two more charts after the break.

News via http://www.summeli.fi/?p=2314
For those of you who want a better experience on S^3, here’s a modified version of AntSnes that supports multitouch and has full set of on-screen buttons. Also runs much faster, close to 60 FPS w/out sound and usable with it. The audio might sound a bit glitchy at the moment, though, due to some optimizations.
This is completely un-official and Summeli can re-release this when he finds time through his proper channels and with the source, but at least here’s something to play with in the meantime.
Requirements: S^3 device with Qt 4.7.2 or 4.7.3 libraries installed

Look, we all kinda, sorta know that Apple will finally admit it's springtime tomorrow and let the white iPhone 4 fly the nest. But in order to sell white iPhone 4s, you've got to ship them first, and one small Belgian retailer has just received its first batch of the mythical pale device and lined them up for some loving photography. Not only that, but they're even offering to sell you either the 16GB or 32GB over on their site (which, mind you, we can't vouch for!), though they can only ship within the Benelux region. One more pic after the break.

Dell boss Michael Dell said that while he was surprised by the success of tablet computers, business users turning to a range of platforms including PC, smartphones and tablets was a sign of continued industry growth.
Speaking in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Dell added his voice to a number of analysts that have suggested that Android tablets will eventually surpass the Apple iPad.
The Dell boss pointed out that Android had very little market share just 18 months ago and added that he expected tablets to be no different.
Dell also moved to dispell the myth of Dell's focus on the comsumer PC business. "That's not really at all what Dell is today," he said, pointing out that one-third of the firm's profits were due to sales of PCs and the majority of that was not consumer business.
When asked about Dell's entry into cloud computing and how this would compete with offerings from firms like Rackspace and Amazon, the Dell chief said the firm's cloud offerings are aimed at larger commercial organisations.

Imagine a world where Nokia's N-Gage is the mobile platform of choice -- there's no iOS, no Android, and Nintendo's 3D ventures ended mercifully with the Virtual Boy. It's a world where the Nckia NG belongs. In our universe, a knockoff of the stillborn Nokia 7700 doesn't make a heck of a lot of sense, even with a MicroSD slot and added buttons for dialing. And then there's the fact that the handset runs a JAVA OS that doesn't exactly offer a bounty of mobile gaming choices -- which was sort of the whole point of the N-Gage. As for other familiar features, we can't be sure that this will be the rebirth of side-talkin', but with what could be a speaker slot on the side, we've got our fingers crossed. No word on pricing, but if you're truly nostalgic for a time that never was, you can pick one up from Huaqiangbei in Shenzhen. Get a closer look after the break.
