The Japanese games market finally has a new number one, although sales for both software and hardware remain in the doldrums.
Acquire's self-published Akiba's Trip involves defeating vampire-like creatures by ripping off their clothes and exposing their body parts to sunlight. Set in Akihabara's busy shopping district the PSP game seems unlikely to enjoy a Western release and sold only 58,150 units to get to number one.
Tecmo's Dead or Alive Dimensions is the highest-charting 3DS game since the system's launch, but it sold only a meagre 23,078 units at number two.
Strategy game Gungnir at number four sold just 16,355 units and while Valve's Portal 2 on PlayStation 3 is a surprise entry at number six it registered only 8,942 unit sales.
The lowest ranked title in the top 10, 3DS title Steel Diver, sold only 4,583 units to ensure its appearance in the chart.
Hardware sales, obtained by website Andriasang, were similarly unimpressive, although the now familiar hierarchy was undisturbed as most formats saw sales decrease by a similar proportion.
The PSP led with 30,463 unit sales, followed by the 3DS on 17,240. The PlayStation 3 was down to 12,935, while the Wii was almost unchanged at 6,269.

The Android version of indie hit Minecraft has been confirmed as a timed exclusive for Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play device, as the device prepares for its U.S. launch.
Speaking to website Gamasutra, developer Mojang revealed that the new version of the game will feature customised controls that take advantage of the Xperia Play's DualShock-inspired controls.
Other smartphone versions of the game, including iOS and generic Android SKUs, are also planned - each with variations in content and controls. Regardless of format, the game will continue the PC version's model of "release early and update frequently."
"When playing on smartphones you will have a different screen size compared to PC, different hardware, different attention spans and thus the game needs to be customised to fit the mobile specifications," said the developer.
The length of the exclusivity period has not been announced, nor whether it is valid worldwide. Although released in Europe in April, the Xperia Play launches in the U.S. only this week, where it will be available exclusively on the Verizon Wireless network with six pre-loaded games.
Sony Ericsson is planning a promotional event for Minecraft at E3 next month, where the game is expected to be playable.

Third party iOS developers caught up in a patent infringement case have won the backing of Apple, as the company demands that legal challenges to using in-app upgrades are dropped.
The legal case is being brought by company Lodsys, which has contacted a range of iOS developers with a demand of 0.575 per cent of their U.S. revenues. Lodsys claims that it has patents, filed 19 years ago, which cover in-app upgrades where users pay to access additional content or purchase a full game.
Although the four patents in question are valid, Apple argues that it licensed them from Lodsys and that all developers producing content for iOS are also covered as a result.
As a result Apple has weighed in on the side of the developers and asked Lodsys to withdraw the demands. However, the exact degree to which Apple would be willing to defend developers, if the cases go to court, is unclear.
The letter sent by Apple senior vice president and general counsel Bruce Sewell to Lodsys has been obtained in full by website Macworld, in which he suggests that Lodsys' demands are based on, "a fundamental misapprehension regarding Apple's license and the way Apple's products work".
"I expect that the additional information set out below will be sufficient for you to withdraw your outstanding threats to the App Makers and cease and desist from any further threats to Apple's customers and partners," states Sewell.

Rooting your Motorola Xoom won't stop you from getting an LTE hardware upgrade, but it will throw up a roadblock if you're trying to watch movies rented from YouTube / Android Market. Android Centralpoints out a Google support document that details the "Failed to fetch license for [movie title] (error 49)" message users will see when they try to play a movie on a rooted Android device. Only Xooms with Android 3.1 have access to the service right now, but once support rolls out to all Android 2.2 or higher devices in a couple of weeks some will have to choose between their superuser privileges and Google's nascent movie offerings (at least until someone figures out a workaround anyway). So far rooting and jailbreaking hasn't put a stop to other movie rental services for mobiles (iTunes, Netflix) so even if Google blames the movie studios for the policy, it seems like an odd restriction for the company behind the "open" platform to have.

Don't you hate it when the guy next to you on the subway is looking over your shoulder, watching you screw up in Fruit Ninja? Well, Apple could have predicted your discomfort -- back in November 2009, before the iPad was anything more than a unicorn, the company applied for a patent on an LCD display with adjustable viewing angles, explicitly designed to "shield the display away from unintended viewers." According to the filing, the display would include steering modules made of liquid crystal material, which aim the so-called scattering modules that sit on top of them. The top layer then redirects the light, making it possible to narrow down and alter the viewing angle. The patent specifically calls out cellphones and laptops, paving the way for discreet displays on MacBooks and iPhones, though the broad phrase "other portable electronic devices" leaves plenty of room for iPads and iPod Touches. No word, of course, on when or if Apple will secure this patent and if so, what devices might incorporate such screens. We may just be seeing this concept go public now, but it seems consumers could use this even more today than they did back in the fall of '09, when all they had to worry about was a stranger squinting at their 3GS' 3.5-inch screen.

Android, as Andy Rubin (no relation) has pointed out on multiple occasions, plays a game of numbers. And at Google I/O, the company carrying on its development shared some large ones: 100 million activated devices with 400,000 being added each day. However, like in many games, different players can catch up or overtake each other at different points. Just ask Nokia and RIM. To stay on top, operating system vendors implement strategies that lock consumers in. The more money consumers sink into iPhone apps, for example, the more incentive they have to stay with that platform; the same is true for accessories that use Apple's 30-pin dock connector that has been around since the third-generation iPod.
With Android having become the lead operating system for every smartphone company that licenses its OS with the notable exception of Nokia (which nearly did), Google showed that it's intent not just on moving Android into other devices with sufficient computing horsepower such as tablets and, increasingly, TVs, but now has its sights set on having just about everything that can't run Android directly feed into it. Google is taking two approaches – one for things that plug into Android devices, and one for things that don't.

An anonymous reader points out a Wired story about some of the efforts behind CyanogenMod, a popular piece of Android modification software. Quoting:"CyanogenMod expanded into a team of 35 different 'device maintainers,' who manage the code for the 32 different devices that the project supports. Like Google, the team publishes its code to an online repository and accepts online submissions for changes to the code from other developers. Seven core members decide which of the submitted changes make it into the next release of CyanogenMod, and which don’t. ... Ultimately, CyanogenMod aspires to be more than just a software mod. 'I think one of our biggest dreams is to see a phone ship with Cyanogen on it,' says Soyars. But pairing the software with a phone is no easy task. First, CyanogenMod would have to pass the tests required by Google’s certification program in order to bundle Google’s proprietary apps — Gmail, Calendar, etc. — on the phone."http://mobile.slashdot.org/story/11/...n-Android-Hack

Legendary Oddworld creator Lorne Lanning hasn't directly been involved in the development of a video game since 2005 Xbox exclusive Stranger's Wrath.
After the game's launch Lanning shuttered his development studio and relocated to the San Francisco Bay area to focus on television and film.
Will he ever make another game?
"We're looking at this all the time," he told Eurogamer.
"They way I'm looking now is, how do I turn YouTube and Facebook into one game? That's the game-ified thing I'm focused on right now. If we figure that out, and I think we have, then it's a game changer.
"If we're successful with that, which is the intent, then we'll have the money to finance and go back to the Oddworld we all know and love."
Lanning has commissioned Leeds developer Just Add Water to remake classic Oddworld games for release on multiple platforms.
Last year JAW released the Oddboxx on Steam, a collection including Abe's Oddysee, Abe's Exoddus, Munch's Oddysee and Stranger's Wrath for PC. It's due out on the PlayStation 3 as a PlayStation Network game at some point in the summer.
JAW is also working on a high definition remake of Munch's Oddysee, a RTS spin-off called Hand of Odd, and is contemplating creating a brand new Oddworld game.
But Lanning will direct neither game.
"Oddworld was a company that was started but never had an exit strategy," the California-based entrepreneur said. "It was about creating a universe that I cared about, that I loved, that I thought would have nutritious value for the world, that you could enjoy with a light heart, and also contemplate with a brain.
"It is very close to my heart.
"The reason we haven't done certain things with the property is because we didn't want to give up control to it, because we still have a lot of plans.
"But plans were made to be broken, in that you have to adjust to the shifting tides of what's occurring, and then you can figure out how best to come back to it.
"Am I going to make something again? Absolutely. The question is in what format, and what does that look like, and in what genre? That I'm not sure about. But there's a reason we still have Oddworld: it's because we love it."

Episode 2 of superb "not for kids" iPhone, iPad and PC point and click adventure game Hector: Badge of Carnage is a longer, better value for money game than its predecessor, its developer has said.
The first game, which launched earlier this year, was well-received by critics. Eurogamer's Hector review pointed at a 9/10.
Some, however, criticised it for ending abruptly.
As a result its creator, Northern Ireland indie developer Straandlooper Animation, in collaboration with Telltale Games, is making Episode 2 beefier.
"People were saying it seemed to end a little abruptly, it seemed a little bit short," art director Kevin Beimers told Eurogamer.
"Episodes 2 and 3, since we're now working with Telltale and we've got a more robust game engine we're working on, it's a little bit longer. We've tried to bulk out the puzzles and we've added a few more characters.
"We want to make sure the game experience is worth what you're paying for."
Hector is a hard-nosed, politically incorrect detective inspector with the Clapper's Wreake Police Service. In Episode 1 he is drafted in to deal with a terrorist hostage situation.
"Hector's going to carry on in his cantankerous old grumpy way," Beimers revealed of Episode 2. "Once he escapes from his current predicament he will spend the rest of the episode running around town chasing after the terrorist who has left minimal and circumstantial clues behind, but enough to generate enough leads to bring him through some of the more seedy areas of Clappers Wreake."
Straandlooper promises plenty of new characters and new locations.
"One particular favourite of mine is a beauty parlour that is also an army surplus store," Beimers said. "It's run by this gun-toting beautician. All of her specials have to do with combining say Jasmine and Cordite, cocoa butter and machine gun oil. She's a fun character."
Episode 2 is due out this autumn. Episode 3 will "probably" launch within a month after that.

Android rose to become the dominant mobile operating system in the world during the first three months of 2011, with Apple's iOS only gaining a small amount of market share over the previous year.
According to a report published by research group Gartner, Android commanded a market share of 36.0 per cent in Q1, up from just 9.6 per cent at the same time in 2010. This represents a total installed userbase of almost 36.3 million smartphones.
In 2010 the most successful OS was Symbian, with a massive 44.2 per cent market share. This has fallen to 27.4 per cent in 2011 and will continue to fall as Nokia abandons the technology in favour ofWindows Phone 7.
In the interim though Microsoft's mobile operating systems remained the lowest rank individual OS, with market share falling from 6.8 per cent to 3.6 percent over the course of the last 12 months.
Blackberry makers RIM also saw a fall in market share, from 19.7 per cent to 12.9 per cent, while Apple's iOS saw only a small increase from 15.3 per cent to 16.8 per cent - for a new installed base of around 16.9 million devices.
"Every time a user downloads a native app to their smartphone or puts their data into a platform's cloud service, they are committing to a particular ecosystem and reducing the chances of switching to a new platform," claims the Gartner report.
"As well as putting their devices in the context of a broader ecosystem, manufacturers must start to see their smartphones as part of a computing continuum."

Customers downloading apps using a publisher's promotional code will no longer be allowed to rate them, as Apple shuts down another common source of unfair ratings manipulation.
Although the company has made no official announcement, an Apple customer support email posted on the Touch Arcade forums appears to state the policy that, "It is no longer possible to rate or review an app if it was downloaded using a developer's promotional code."
No reason for the change is given, but it is presumed to be an attempt to stop biased ratings from customers who have received the app for free - and would therefore be likely to have a more favourable opinion.
The move will also prevent reviewers from adding their own ratings, leaving app rankings to be created purely according to feedback from paying customers.
Earlier last month Apple appeared to alter the algorithms used to create chart positions, with a reweighting to take into account not only how many times an app is downloaded but how much it is eventually used.
Again no official announcement of the change was made and it is likely that the alteration in policy regarding promotion codes was made at the same time and has only now been noticed.

The Digital Foundry blog took a detailed look at gaming on Apple's recently released iPad 2. While most reviews of the device focus on the tablet's size, accessories and software features, this one puts the new A5 processor through its paces, finding "anything from a 4x to 7x leap over what was seen in the original version of the tablet." The authors suggest that it has boosted mobile gaming to a point where Apple could be preparing for a much bigger entrance into the gaming market."Either we are looking at a company looking to consolidate its iron grip on the mobile games market by combining its existing unparalleled developer support with state-of-the-art technology, or else iPad 2 represents the first stages of a plan to expand iOS' reach from mobile phones and MP3 players through to tablets and perhaps in the near future, home games consoles. ... Technical and hardware challenges aside, there's no doubt whatsoever that Apple is extremely well-placed to expand its reach in the games market and launch a new, disruptive assault on the status quo every bit as effective as its mobile offerings have been. There have been plenty of creditable attempts at claiming the multi-purpose set-top box market, but there has been no outright winner. Arguably, Apple has the brand presence, the games, and the music/video services to actually make it happen."http://games.slashdot.org/story/11/0...eans-For-Apple

[Aaron] wrote in to share with us a quick hack that has made his life a little easier. He bought a Rocketfish RF-HV3 portable iPod dock to listen to his music, but he wanted to utilize it as an alarm clock as well. He also found that the speakers worked quite well when he hooked up his Yaesu handheld transmitter to the dock.
The only problem he had with it was that the dock would automatically power down when there was no input for 5 minutes. That’s fine when the dock is running on batteries, but if [Aaron] was going to use it as an alarm clock or to listen to his HAM radio, that simply wouldn’t do.
He pulled the dock apart and started poking around with his DSO Nano scope. He found that if pin 16 stays low for 5 minutes, it turns off the dock even if there is a signal coming through. His fix for the problem was actually quite simple – all he did was solder the VDD pin to the pin in question, and the 5-minute timeout was disabled.
We’re glad that [Aaron] was able to solve his problem in such an easy manner – it just goes to show what you can do with a scope and a few minutes’ time.

Apple is poised to release yet another iOS update, this one aimed almost exclusively at removing any vestiges of concern related to the recent iOS user-tracking scandal that made international headlines.
Late last week, Apple said that providing mobile users with fast and accurate location information while preserving their security and privacy "has raised some very complex technical issues which are hard to communicate in a soundbite." Instead, they will be addressed by iOS 4.3.3.
On Monday, the early build of iOS 4.3.3 was obtained by Boy Genius Report, which says the update will formally roll out in as little as two weeks, if not sooner. Once installed, the iOS 4 update will cease to back up the location database file to iTunes when a user syncs their iPhone or iPad.
In addition, Apple will dramatically scale back on the size of the file and equally slash the length of time that location data is maintained. It will, in fact, fully delete the database..

Remember when you took your driving test and and had an inspector second-guessing your every stop, turn, signal and lane choice? State Farm's new Driver Feedback app is like having said individual with you all the time. Simply put, it uses your smartphone's accelerometer and GPS to gauge your acceleration, braking and cornering habits (sound familiar?) and spit out a score, letting you brag to your (parents / significant other / stranger / the family dog) just how safe and secure you are. State Farm claims it doesn't collect any information and won't adjust your insurance rates based on your score, which is a bit of a bummer if you ask us -- wouldn't it be nice if you could earn some cash back for perfecting your heel-toe? Either way, you'll find it for free in the iTunes App Store.

After months of speculation, Time Inc. has finally inked a deal with Apple that will allow print magazine subscribers to access the company's iPad editions for free. Beginning this week, subscribers to print versions of Sports Illustrated,Fortune, and Time will be able to download the iPad counterparts at no cost, directly within the magazines' apps. Today's deal comes just a few months after the company struck a similar arrangement with HP, but iPad users, unlike TouchPad readers, still won't be able to purchase exclusively digital subscriptions to Time Inc.'s stable of publications. It'sno secret that Time Inc. wants to incorporate digital subscriptions to its iPad model, but negotiations have hit some roadblocks, largely thanks to disputes over how Apple shares subscriber data. Publishers say they need that data to apply the TV Everywhere model to magazines, but Apple thinks subscriber information should only be shared on an opt-in basis. We don't really expect Apple to budge any time soon, but execs at Time Inc. seem optimistic, telling the Wall Street Journal that today's deal proves that the two parties are "moving closer" on the issue -- apparently not close enough, however, for Apple to comment.
