The UK games industry is in danger of being reduced to four-man iPhone development studios.
That's according to Bodycount game director Andy Wilson, who blames a tough economic climate and the way in which hopes for tax breaks were "torpedoed".
The Codemasters Guildford dev told Gamerzines it's "painfully obvious" why so many UK studios are closing "when you look at the level of support in North America".
"The UK is primarily tough, in my opinion, because the bright, shining hope of tax breaks for the games industry got torpedoed," he said.
"It's a tough economy for sure, but we need to start supporting the industry properly or the whole thing is going to melt into iPhone developers - and there's only so many four-man teams who are going to find success.
"When you look at the level of support in North America it becomes painfully obvious why so many developers here are closing their doors, including my former home Black Rock. I'm still sitting in disbelief at that one."
He added: "Codemasters already has a studio in Malaysia for production of art assets, but I would think it unlikely we'll move full scale development overseas any time soon. We're still flying the flag as the last British publisher, after all."
Head of the new UK Codemasters studio, Ian Johnson, touched on the same subject last week when he said that UK developers need to work together to counter foreign tax incentives with domestic efficiency.

A new worrying phenomenon has cropped up in China and Apple has been its first victim; meet the first fake Apple Stores, entire buildings that have been designed to look like the real ones. Chinese companies have long been known for being master copiers but this takes the concept of plagiarism and copying to a whole new level. As expected, everything, from the architecture of the building, the colour of the paint, to the products, the T-shirt worn by the staff down to the logo and the badge design come from Cupertino."

Neil Daswani, who is also the CTO of security firm Dasient, says that they have studied around 10,000 Android apps and have found that 800 of them are leaking private information of the user to an unauthorized server. Neil Daswani is scheduled to present the full findings at the Black Hat Conference in Las Vegas which starts on July 30th. The Dasient researchers also found out that 11 of the apps they have examined are sending unwanted SMS messages.

The number of Android devices officially compatible with the Netflix streaming app has more than doubled in v2.3, growing from 9 to 24. Last night the description was updated with a new list of devices but the actual updated APK only started pushing this afternoon, bringing Netflix not only to the Lenovo tablet announced last night but also to the Droid 3, HTC Thunderbolt, Motorola Atrix, several Galaxy S phones including the Epic 4G and Fascinate and more. Fragmentation is clearly still an issue for DRM'd apps like this and Hulu Plus, but at least now there's a growing number of recent superphones supported instead of sitting on the sidelines. We've got the updated list of devices after the break, hit the source link to download the app from the Android Market.

Samsung and LG are reportedly fighting it out to secure a deal with Apple to produce the iPad 3 display.
According to the Korea Times' sources, the unannounced tablet will support quad extended graphics and a display resolution of 2048×1536 pixels with a 4:3 aspect ratio.
Apple is said to testing rival Samsung and LG displays in a bid to ensure the tablet delivers the "full HD viewing experience".
Kium Securities analyst Kim Byeong-ki told the site: "Apple will be looking to boost the shipments of its upcoming iPad to distance itself further from tablet rivals like Samsung."
Last night Apple reported record revenue and earnings for the three months ended June 25, with 9.25 million iPad sales helping the company rake in a massive $7.31 billion profit during the quarter.

You could run an entire website based on nothing more than Apple launch rumours, but here’s an interesting one that comes directly from Apple itself.
As part of its Q3 financial statement, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer said:
“We have a future product transition that we’re not going to talk about today, and these things will impact our September quarter.“
Of course, this could in theory be related to host of possible new launches. A new Mac, for instance, or updates to Apple TV.
But with the successor to the iPhone 4 missing its expected June launch date, many eyes are already looking to the autumn for the latest iPhone refresh.

Apple sold 20.34 million iPhones and 9.25 million iPads in the last three months, according the manufacturer's Q3 earnings report.
The company's net income rose to $7.31bn (£4.6bn) for the quarter, up 125 per cent year-on-year – its best ever performance.
"We sold every iPad we could make," said chief financial officer Peter Oppenheimer, as reported by Venturebeat.
"Sales of the iPad 2 have absolutely been a frenzy," added COO Tim Cook, before insisting it was finally beginning to be able to meet demand for the latest iteration of its best-selling tablet.
"As we stepped into July, we have been able to increase the supply further, and some SKUs in some countries are at a supply-demand balance," he explained. "This is a good sort of problem to have."

tripleevenfall sent in a link with a story that is sure to be the basis for the next iPhone 4 commercial. From the article: "Jarrod McKinney's iPhone 4 — a notoriously fragile device — cracked when his 2-year-old knocked it off a bathroom shelf. So it's easy to see why McKinney, a 37-year-old in Minnesota, would be 'just absolutely shocked' when that same phone survived a fall from his pocket — while he was skydiving from 13,500 feet."

Apple approved the Google+ app for the iPhone on Tuesday, and posted it to the App Store. It's unclear whether Google has created an iPad-specific app. Two weeks ago, a Google employee said that the company had submitted Google+ to the App Store ... on July 4. According to that timeline, Google's app took twice as long as the majority of submitted apps to win Apple's approval.

Develop Conference: TeePee Games CEO lauds free-to-play model for all Android games
CEO of London-based publisher TeePee Games Tony Pearce has said that developers of Android games and apps must consider the freemium payment model for their titles in the future.
Speaking as part of a Develop Conference panel discussing the issue of payment models for Android, Pearce looked up the top ten downloaded Android apps on stage, noting that nine of them were freemium.
“If you are a publisher of mobile games, you have to start thinking about freemium product,” he said.
“Of those that start freemium games, maybe about six per cent will start paying. Six per cent is a big number when you’re in the top ten apps on Android.”
Pearce also warned against complacency when making use of the increasingly popular model however.
“Don’t let the consumer down when they buy it [your app],” he said.
“Really start to drag them in.”

InfoWorld's Serdar Yegulalp provides an in-depth tutorial on how he rooted and upgraded his Motorola Cliq XT, one of many Android phones made infamous for not receiving further Android updates beyond 1.5. 'It turned out to be quite an odyssey, with twists and turns I describe here in order to help those who wish to embark on a similar journey,' Yegulalp writes. 'Was it worth the trouble? Yes, in the sense that learning how to jailbreak your own phone is a valuable skill, and I got much more functionality out of the Cliq, when I was expecting to simply junk it.

Still trying to scratch that itch left by the slow fade out of the Casey Anthony drama? Well, good news kiddies, CNN is pointing its 24-hour news hose straight at your face over a little thing we like to call the internet. The OG cable news network is finally returning to the streaming fray (die-hard Blitz-heads may remember a little service called CNN Pipeline) and offering live feeds of CNN and HLN, online and through its iOS apps. Unfortunately, just like HBO Go, you'll need to have a pay TV subscription through AT&T, Comcast, Cox, DISH Network, Suddenlink or Verizon to access the streams. For the moment Android users are left out in the cold but, that's ok, fans of dessert-themed OS names can pull in Al Jazeera English free of charge.
