Four months after unveiling the relatively bare bones W8, Sony Ericsson has now taken the wraps off yet another Walkman phone, known as the Live with Walkman. Powered by a 1GHz processor, this Android handset features a 3.2 inch, capacitive touchscreen (with somewhat disappointing HVGA resolution), a five megapixel AF shooter with 8x digital zoom, and a front-facing VGA camera capable of capturing HD video in 720p. The petite, Gingerbread-equipped device also packs a lackluster 320MB of RAM, provides up to 32GB of microSD storage, and offers either tri-band 3G support (HSPA+) at 850, 1900 and 2100MHZ, or dual-band 3G at 900 and 2100MHz, depending on the model. And, as you'd expect, Sony Ericsson has placed a special emphasis on the music phone's media capabilities, beefing it up with enhanced audio and Qriocity integration. The specs may not sound earth shattering, but we'll wait until we get pricing information before casting judgment. Following the devastation wrought by the recent Japanese earthquake, Apple has hooked the country's early warning system into iOS 5. The tectonically-volatile nation has the most sophisticated alarm in the world, delivering life-saving warnings seconds or minutes before disaster strikes. iOS users already had access to this functionality via apps like Yurekuru, but iOS 5 will bring it directly into the operating system. The service can be activated in the Notification Center settings pane, accompanied by a warning that the constant connection will deplete your battery faster -- a fair exchange if it saves your life.

iPad 3 will reportedly launch early next year.
 The Wall Street Journal (via Gizmodo) says the third iteration of the tablet will come with a high-res, 9.7 inch screen with a 2048x1536 display, a significant upgrade from the current model's 1024x768 resolution.

Well, the Wall Street Journal's headline certainly isn't going to surprise you -- Apple Developing New iPad -- that has been a safe assumption since the iPad 2 was announced. Rumors are circulating though (some, for quite a while) that are painting an increasingly convincing picture of a Retina Display-equipped slate shipping in early 2012. Reports are in that suppliers have already received Q4 orders for parts that may eventually find their way into Apple's next tablet. Can we say for certain that the iPad 3will hit shelves in Q1 of next year sporting a 2048 x 1536 screen? Since that whole Revue thing didn't go over so swimmingly, it looks like Logitech's going back to its accessory roots, with a manic hope that tablet add-ons are the future. The company just announced a fold-out keyboard for the iPad 2 that's pretty much what it sounds like: a keyboard split in two whose halves flip out and connect to form a full QWERTY. As you can see in those shots below, you can still use your magical, candy-colored Smart Cover when your iPad is docked. At $129.99, it's hardly a cheap doo-dad and frankly, we would have hoped for higher quality. In our brief hands-on, the keys felt unstable and stiff -- an ideal combination for anyone who thought their iPad needed more chintz. InfoWorld's Bob Lewis argues that while the iPad may be opening IT's eyes to a new way to encourage end-users to innovate new solutions for their organizations, that work will better be undertaken on the PC. 'When the subject is PCs, the answer is to lock 'em down and run everything in the data center. When the subject is iPads, the answer is that there's an app for that,' Lewis writes. 'Before you decide the iPad is your platform, though, consider the factors that favor the PC. First, it's a sunk cost. Second, it's more capable. And third, your end-users are already familiar with it. Which brings us to what's particularly sad about the end-user innovation situation: Until the iPad resurrected the subject, most IT organizations have actively discouraged it. It goes beyond locking down the devices so that end-users can't install software they might find helpful in their day-to-day work or might increase efficiency in their departments.'"

It popped up in private beta earlier this summer, but Slide's Photovine is now open to the public, available as a free download on Apple's iOS App Store. Surprisingly there's no Android app yet -- a curious move considering Google (Slide's parent company) isn't known to exclude its own mobile platform with new product rollouts. Huff Post went hands-on with the app, summing it up as "Instagram meets Piictu," also noting the bizarre exclusion of an option to add your Gmail contacts -- though youcan import your friends from Twitter and Facebook. It's probably safe to say that an Android app will be coming soon -- or perhaps some other indication that Google and Slide do in fact share the same roof -- but for now, iPhone owners can slide on down to the source link to get their photo sharing fix.

Last year DirecTV started offering NFL Sunday Ticket To-Go access even to those who couldn't / wouldn't get their satellite packages, and it's upping the ante this year by bringing its slate of football games to the PlayStation 3. NFL Sunday Ticket To-Go is still a $50 add-on that adds HD streaming access on PCs and mobile devices, however this year there's also an app for the Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Android tablets. PS3 owners can get in on the action either by adding the To-Go option or paying a flat $339.95 without DirecTV service. Of course, it's still interested in enticing people to switch to the dish by offering Sunday Ticket at no additional charge for new subscribers -- just ask fairy Deion Sanders after the break. The injunction preventing Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 devices from being sold in Europe has been restricted to Germany, Bloomberg reports.
Apple was awarded an injunction against Samsung last week, on the grounds that its Galaxy tablet device infringed on an intellectual and design patent.
"It's no coincidence that Samsung's latest products look a lot like the iPhone and iPad, from the shape of the hardware to the user interface and even the packaging," said Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huget at the time.
Initially, the injunction applied across Europe - except for the Netherlands - but the German court hasdecided to introduce limits on its "enforceability."
"There are doubts whether a German court has so a wide a jurisdiction over a company based in Korea," said German court spokesman Peter Schuetz.
Apple has engaged in patent disputes with several smartphone manufacturers that use Google's Android operating system, including HTC and Motorola.
Google's recent $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola was motivated by the company's extensive library of patents. Shortly after the deal was announced, Google CEO Larry Page published a blog post that accused Apple of "anti-competitive patent attacks."
Both the original injunction and the partial reprieve are temporary measures. The Dusseldorf Regional Court has scheduled a full hearing for 25 August, with a final decision expected within three weeks of that date.

Earlier this year, the Chinese firm Huawei unveiled IDEOS through Kenya's telecom titan, Safaricom. So far, this $80 smartphone has found its way into the hands of 350,000+ Kenyans, an impressive sales number in a country where 40% of the population lives on less than two dollars a day. The smartphone is the exemplar of a truly liberating device, and thanks to Android and Huawei, it has the potential to reach virtually untapped markets.

iOS developer Future Games of London believes that a Freemium model can generate more revenue than paid apps.
The studio released its Hungry Shark series of games for free during a promotional period called "Shark Week", and reported a significant increase in profits.
"The success of the Freemium model leads us to believe that we will be moving away from paid apps completely," said managing director Ian Harper in a statement.
"By switching business model on Part 3 during Shark Week, we've traded 1000 downloads a day at $1 for 250,000 Daily Active Users that we can monetise through in-app purchases of optional upgrades."
The average in-app transaction on Hungry Shark is worth $3.26, making it one of the 50 highest grossing IPs in the App Store.
"Our revenue is also now correlated with DAU not daily downloads, which is great as DAU falls off much slower after a sales spike. We've also been able to give the whole game away for free and reach an audience 100 times larger, who we can also promote other products too."
