Street Fighter IV will soon be throwing fireballs on the screens of Android devices, Capcom has confirmed.
That's good news for all, but particularly for LG handset users who will have exclusive access to the game for the first three months after its release later this year thanks to a deal struck between Capcom and LG.
SFIV's release is set to coincide with the release of LG's "soon-to-be-unveiled" HD display technology for new handsets. "As we prepare our first HD smartphone for launch, it was important for us to be able to offer HD content that would really demonstrate this phone's benefits," said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG. "The HD version of Street Fighter certainly fills this objective."
We expect the Android version of SFIV to be the same as (or at least incredibly similar to) the version iPhone users have been playing (in HD too on iPhone 4) since early 2010 - which looks and plays surprisingly well considering the lack of physical buttons.

Should Tim Cook and Larry Page be getting together to clink glasses of champagne this week?
Admittedly, it's an unlikely prospect, but the CEOs of Apple and Google do have a joint milestone to celebrate.
According to app-tracking startup Appsfire, more than one million apps have now been released across iOS and Android - 52% on the former and 48% on the latter.

An anonymous reader points out an article by Richard Stallman in The Guardian which questions whether Android should be described as 'free' or 'open.' Quoting:"Google has complied with the requirements of the GNU General Public License for Linux, but the Apache license on the rest of Android does not require source release. Google has said it will never publish the source code of Android 3.0 (aside from Linux), even though executables have been released to the public. Android 3.1 source code is also being withheld. Thus, Android 3, apart from Linux, is non-free software, pure and simple. ... Android is a major step towards an ethical, user-controlled, free-software portable phone, but there is a long way to go. Hackers are working on Replicant, but it's a big job to support a new phone model, and there remains the problem of the firmware. Even though the Android phones of today are considerably less bad than Apple or Windows smartphones, they cannot be said to respect your freedom.

Man. Exciting stuff, here. Stuff like lawyers yelling at each other in varied continents because "your stuff looks too much like my theoretical stuff." The long, winding and increasingly mind-numbing battle between Samsung and Apple has taken yet another turn in Australia, with the former slapping the latter with a bold countersuit. According to The Wall Street Journal, Sammy feels that the iPhone and iPad 2 both "violate a number of wireless technology patents held by Samsung." Spokesman Nam Ki-yung stated the following: "To defend our intellectual property, Samsung filed a cross claim for Apple's violation of Samsung's wireless technology patents." The suit is being filed just days / weeks before a ruling will decide on whether the Galaxy Tab 10.1 can be legally sold Down Under, and in related news, Samsung is also appealing a recent ruling back in Germany. If ever the world needed an out-of-court settlement...

Sure, Taito is a veritable grandfather of the arcade world, but ¥15,800 ($209) for a nostalgic iPad Space Invaders box with one lonely einzelkind fire button? Atari also has some standing in this business and its worthy alternative costs just $60, while even the genre-founding iCade now seems a bargain at $100. Anyways, check out the video after the break to see an old Japanese bloke waiting patiently for his refund.

There's plenty of options for keeping your digits toasty while you peruse the music on your iPhone or iPod, but most of those still require you to fish the device out of your pocket to skip that Audioslave track that sneaked on there. Burton's Mix Master gloves skip all that physical interaction nonsense by sticking a wireless remote in the back of one of the mitts. You just plug a small dongle into your iDevice and it pairs up with the music-controlling hand-wear. Of course, if you're not the exceedingly lazy type, you could just sew a few cents worth of conductive thread into any standard pair of gloves and avoid coughing up $160 for the Mix Masters. If you're still curious there's a video after the break.

Looks like Boeing's decided to get in bed with Android a mile-high in the sky. The aerospace company has exclusively selected Google's mobile OS as the might behind its new class of 787 Dreamliners' in-flight entertainment. Currently in production jets, of which there are over 800 plus orders, will get outfitted with either a Panasonic or Thales model of the 7- to 17-inch screens. And in a strange twist of luxury privileges, first and business class passengers won't get to enjoy the touchscreen tech, as their monitors will be too large and too far out of reach. Instead, an alternate gesture-based control method is being explored by the company for elite travelers, although nothing's been solidified. Don't expect the planes to launch with the typical Android market experience, either -- apparently, "airline-specific apps" are on the way for the nascent fleets' launch. Now, if only they could replace those flight attendants with little green robots.

An Apple patent for a "3D imaging and display system" staggers out into daylight after seven years buried in the USPTO. Its eyes steadily adjust to the brightness of a Kinect-dominated world and its heart sinks. But then a random guy approaches and says,
"Hey little patent, what's wrong?"
"I'm obsolete," comes the sullen reply. "I'm all about detecting user movements in three dimensions, but the competition has that covered. Sure, people might *think* I've patented some kind of wild holographic virtual reality stuff too, but my paperwork only mentions that in the vaguest possible terms. There's no way I can threaten Microsoft."
"Nonsense!" cries the guy. "Follow me. I know a judge in Düsseldorf."

Belkin showed off a trio of accessories last night aimed at incorporating your shiny Apple tablet into your kitchen routine. At the top of the list is the Chef Stand + Stylus, a $40 table top stand with a rubbery stylus that lets you use the iPad without dirtying it up with your greasy mitts. The stylus lives in a holster on the stand's rear. The $40 Fridge Mount turns the iPad into a $500 grocery list, securing the slate to your fridge door with 3M Command Strips. The Kitchen Cabinet Mount is the priciest of the bunch at $50 -- but is arguably the handiest, or at least most versatile, clamping the iPad to a cabinet or shelf.

The latest game from indie developer Molleindustria was pulled from the App Store on Tuesday, just hours after its official announcement.
Molleindustria has a reputation for tackling controversial themes, including big oil in Oligarchy, and child abuse in the Catholic Church in Operation Pedopriest.
Phone Story is a satirical mini-game collection themed around the human and environmental cost of the explosion in smartphone production.
The 99c app includes games based on a string of suicides at a factory operated by Foxconn in Shenzhen, China, and the social and political upheaval surrounding the mining of coltan in the Congo - a mineral widely used in smartphone production.
In both cases, the events on-screen are accompanied by a voiceover explaining the reality of the issue. Molleindustria pledged to donate all proceeds from the game to organisations that fight corporate abuses and seek to improve working conditions.
A post on Molleindustria's website explains that Phone Story breached four App Store guidelines:- 15.2: Apps that depict violence or abuse of children will be rejected
- 16.1: Apps that present excessively objectionable or crude content will be rejected
- 21.1: Apps that include the ability to make donations to recognized charitable organizations must be free
- 21.2: The collection of donations must be done via a web site in Safari or an SMS
Molleindustria contests the violations of 21.1 and 21.2 on the grounds that the company, "simply pledged to re-direct the revenues to no-profit organizations, acting independently."
Speaking to Gamasutra, Molleindustria's founder, Paolo Pedercini, revealed that Apple had agreed to accept a new version of Phone Story if it complied with the guidelines.
"A new version of Phone Story that depicts the violence and abuse of children involved in the electronic manufacturing supply chain in a non-crude and non-objectionable way... will be a difficult task," said Pedercini.
"But the truth is that there is no way to know what's 'excessive' and 'objectionable' in Cupertino."
Pedercini insists that he is "very familiar" with the App Store's guidelines, and deliberately built the game with them in mind. The goal was not to discourage people from buying smartphones, but simply to raise awareness of relevant issues surrounding them.
"This happened before with fur coats, diamonds, cigarettes and SUVs - I can't see why it can't happen with iPads."
However, the larger problem is the reaction from other iOS developers, who Pedercini believes are living in blithe acceptance of guidelines that stifle creativity and free expression.
"The unanimous reaction from developers community has been, 'Wow, it's incredible Phone Story made through Apple's review process,'" he says. "To me, this signals a full acceptance of a regime of censorship, the equivalent, for developers, of what journalists call the 'chilling effect'."
"I'm sure that Apple doesn't spend that much time in policing its marketplace, because the developers are already censoring themselves."

The Android Market has reached 6 billion app downloads, according to a report from analytics firm research2guidance.
Google's mobile OS has grown its market share significantly this year, with recent NPD data suggesting that 52 per cent of all phones sold in America in the last quarter were based on Android.
Despite its increasing popularity with consumers, developers have struggled to make money on the platform, particularly when compared to iOS and the App Store. However, research2guidance's August report suggests that the ecosystem for distributing and monetising apps is showing strong signs of improvement.
As of the end of August, the Android Market contained 277,252 apps, 35 per cent of which cost money to download. The average app currently generates almost $2500 in its lifetime, and sells at $3.13.
Games are the fastest growing app category on the Android Market, accounting for almost a quarter of all downloads, but the most lucrative categories by a considerable distance are weather and business.
The report estimates that developers can improve the profit potential of an app by 900 per cent simply based of which category it occupies.

What's the point of dropping a few Benjamins on a tablet if you can't watch video on-the-go? Although much fuss has been made of Cupertino's reluctance to add Flash to its line of iOS devices, the kings of content (read: networks) are still scheming up ways to port the prime time eye candy to your portable slates. Shoring up that streaming divide are a trio of new apps from NBC, TNT and TBS that deliver full episodes of the networks' fodder to your iPad, albeit with some authentication required. Unlike other premium mobile video services, these three apps come free of charge

Are you just lousy with iPhone and iPads, but light on Maddens and Deus Exes? There's a handy way to convert your supplies of the former into the latter: One week after first revealing the initiative, Gamestop is now allowing trade-ins of iOS devices for store credit. In a statement released this morning (at the same time as theirAndroid tablet's announcement), the company announced that its brick-and-mortar locations are now turning your iPods, iPhones and iPads into cold, hard store credit.
The amount of credit you'll get for each device varies based on which service provider you're attached to, as well as its hard drive capacity and model. The announcement menions that the credit you'll earn is "significantly higher" than the norm -- an AT&T 3G 32GB iPad 2, for instance, is worth $300 in Gamestop-bucks. Why, that's probably, like, 100 times the going rate for a mint copy of Tak and the Power of Juju!

No surprises here. GameStop, which announced its intentions to become a technology company earlier this spring, has officially selected Google's Android OS for its upcoming tablet-based "certified gaming platform." The video game retailer's prexy Tony Bartel relayed the news to GamesIndustry.biz, and plans to sell the slate alongside offerings from industry heavyweights. The news comes on the heels of the company's spring acquisition of developer Spawn Labs and Impulse, with a pre-production model design already selected for the tab. Expect the hardware to come pre-loaded with a handful of games, and to have a focus on an OnLive-like, cloud-based gaming platform. Consumers in Dallas were the first to get a hands-on with the beta device that should sport a custom designed inbuilt controller at launch. According to Bartel, "It's hard to imagine how to stream a game - let' say Modern Warfare 3 - onto a tablet and then play it with your finger." The GameStop-made tab could also see third-party exclusives head to the platform, crafted with its controller interface in mind. Bartel made no mention of a release window, but it's clear the company's adapting to the industry's digital download future. Hit up the source below for the full interview.

Back on November 28, 2010, somebody started a thread on Apple's support forums about someone spending more than $50 of his iTunes Store credit on iPhone apps. That discussion thread has since swelled to more than 45 pages, with nearly 700 posts. 'Someone — or some group of someones — seems to be able to spend iTunes gift card credit without permission, buying apps that users don't want. And whoever's doing the hacking seems pretty good at it: Hundreds of users have seen their iTunes credit stolen, and the hack shows no signs of slowing, ten months after it was first reported.' Apple has refunded certain accounts, but not in all cases. Apple suggests that the hack stems from weak, easily guessable passwords, and/or phishing attacks where customers are fooled into entering their passwords into hackers' forms."
